Mercedes-Benz: ML-Class news **Rename Speculation (page 5)**

car connection

The upcoming M-Class was photographed last week while undergoing high-speed testing on the Autobahn. Although normally not driven on public roads in the daylight, these pictures were taken during one of the rare times these vehicles left their secured proving grounds in Germany, and our spies managed to shoot several prototypes of the future Tuscaloosa, Ala.-built soft-roader.

The 2005 M-Class will be of unibody construction. Standard features will include a brake-by-wire system borrowed from the SL and the COMAND II satellite navigation system, as well as a multi-function steering wheel. Options will include computer-controlled air suspension.

The new M-Class will be offered with a variety of engines, ranging from a 170-horsepower common-rail diesel V-6 all the way up to AMG’s 5.5-liter V-8 with an estimated 388 horsepower.

If tha't the interior of the next ML, then I am totally surprised by this new interior design by Mercedes. Totally different and way too sporty for the character of the vehicle. That's not saying that such a thing is a negative characteristic.

Mercedes will introduce in 2005 the new generation of the current ML-Klasse, in production since 1997. The new M-Class will be offered with a variety of engines ranging from a 170-horsepower common-rail diesel V-6, all the way up to AMG's 5.5-liter V-8 with an estimated 388 horsepower. There will be available both normal and long wheelbase. In 2005, Mercedes will also launch the production version of the GST concept, which will not be a regular SUV, but a luxury sport wagon with AWD. Both ML and GST will be produced in the factory from Tuscalosa, Alabama, USA.

If I was an MB exec, I'd kill off the ML line because of how much of a disgrace it's been to the MB name.

Definitely. When I see one on the street, I don't even consider it a Mercedes, and I'm not alone.

Everyone who's had one has told me it sucks monkey balls, I don't see why they don't scrap it and start like a XL line or something and make SUVs under that; maybe ones that don't look like shit.

Damn... not enough difference for a new model. Still mini-vanish in the front, reminds me of a Rav-4 on from the side a bit.

New M-Class 'Rings Changes - - By Chris Thorp - - Source: AutoExpress

This week's Auto Express magazine carries exclusive best pictures of the replacement for the Mercedes M-Class, due to hit UK showrooms next year.

What's more, the model seen in the mag is the supercharged flagship ML55, an SUV that will provide performance and handling to tempt buyers away from the likes of the Porsche Cayenne.

Look closely at the mag's spy shots, taken at the Nürburgring race track in Germany, and you will see the major dynamic improvements in the car. Where the current M-Class would be wallowing and lurching round this high-speed bend, its replacement appears to be handling like a sports saloon.
Key to the off-roader's stability is its air-suspension system, which is similar to that in the SL. To give the new model the punch it needs, Mercedes technicians have fitted the same engine as the SL 55 - the mighty blown 5.4-litre V8 - and that means 500bhp on tap.

Clearly, the AMG-tuned version seen in the mag, with low-profile road tyres, isn't intended for any serious off-road use, but other models in the range will be set up with mud-plugging in mind.

Engines will be taken from the existing line-up, with entry-level variants likely to be powered by a 3.7-litre V6 petrol unit. The big seller is expected to be the 3.2-litre six-cylinder diesel. For buyers who don't need an off-roader but still like the versatility of an SUV, Mercedes will also be offering the R-Class. This is the vast luxury crossover vehicle based on the Vision GST concept - seen at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year - and will combine the strengths of a top-of-the-range saloon with the practicality of a people carrier.

At the other end of the scale, meanwhile, hardcore off-road enthusiasts can look forward to a replacement for the G-Class. All three models are expected to be on sale by the end of 2006.
