Mercedes-Benz: EQS News

https://electrek.co/2020/01/21/merce...otype-gallery/

Mercedes-Benz gave a preview of its upcoming EQS electric sedan with the concept vehicle and a pre-production prototype this week in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately we couldn’t make it to the event, but Mercedes-Benz was nice enough to send us a lot of pictures of the new vehicle.

You will find a gallery below.

Mercedes-Benz launched its next-generation “EQ” electric vehicles with the EQC electric SUV last year.

It’s off to a slow start, but the German automaker is expected to ramp things up with several new models in the next few years.

The EQS, an electric sedan similar in size to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, is going to be one of them.

They unveiled the concept for the vehicle last year, and they plan to bring a production version to market next year.

Mercedes-Benz describes the EQC’s powertrain:
With electric motors at the front and rear axles and the battery integrated into the vehicle floor, the VISION EQS represents a very well-balanced vehicle concept. The basis for dynamic high-level performance and safety comes courtesy of the electric all-wheel drive with axle-variable torque distribution and a battery installed deep in the vehicle floor between the axles. Thanks to more than 350kW of output and immediately available torque of around 760 newton meters, the VISION EQS accelerates from 0-100km/h in under 4.5 seconds.
However, the production may have different specs.

In Los Angeles this week, Mercedes-Benz gave a preview of the concept vehicle as well as a first look at a pre-production prototype of the EQS:

Here’s all the technical data that Mercedes-Benz has released for the EQS electric sedan:
CO2 emissions 0 g/km
Range (WLTP) up to 700km
Output approx. 350kW
Acceleration (0-100 km/h) < 4.5 seconds
Top speed > 200km/h
Peak torque approx. 760Nm
Battery capacity approx. 100kWh
Charging output (DC) 350kW
Drive system All-wheel drive (fully variable)
Length/height/width (mm) 5295/1436/ 2077
Wheelbase (mm) 3260

Wow, that looks super cool.
Range seems to have improved a lot for them. 700km is roughly 430 miles, but with EPA certification it may be lower. Exciting times.

The concept looks pretty neat, but compare it to the EQC next to it & you can see that it'll be toned down/back quite a bit for production.

There’s a buzz in the air, and it’s not just the police copter I swear is circling above to get a better view of what I’m in—this vehicle from tomorrow. On a hilltop in LA’s Elysian Park, I pilot the all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS from its spacesuit-white cockpit. It’s so silent, otherworldly and responsive that I start to wonder if the wheels of this zero-emissions concept are actually touching the tarmac or floating a few inches above.

“This is the first time we’re doing an all-purpose electric platform,” says Gorden Wagener, chief design officer of the German marque. “We wanted to start at our top-end segment, but this is very different from the conventional S-Class, three-box sedan you know.”

Well, that’s an understatement. This is the bellwether for the hotly anticipated EQ line of battery-powered production cars from Mercedes, of which more than 10 models are planned for release by 2022. But the Vision EQS, with Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, represents what we can expect from the flagship.
The car’s futuristic interior. Courtesy of Tim Adler

It’s not the power train that’s impressive, however. Sure, it’s responsible for 460 hp and 560 ft lbs of torque from electric motors located at the front and rear axles, a top speed of 124 mph, acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds and a range of about 435 miles (batteries can be recharged to 80 percent in 20 minutes), but those metrics are yesterday’s news. No, it’s the exterior styling of steel, aluminum and carbon fiber—a two-tone drop of liquid mercury in profile—and the interior’s tech and finish that deliver the one-off’s wow.

The new aesthetic language speaks strongly. “It’s about a seamless bow design,” notes Wagener, pointing to the roofline’s swoopy arc, like that of a strung bow. “We emphasized that by blending the greenhouse into the body and giving it one fast line, like a coupe, over the entire vehicle to make it look lower.” This illusion belies the fact that there is an additional six inches in height because the battery system is housed between the wheels.

Another visual game changer is the front end, with its holographic headlamps set in a digital grille. The faux grille includes 188 LED lights, each shaped as the Mercedes tri-star logo, in a 3-D array. Nearly 300 similar LEDs dot the rear, and a lightband wraps the perimeter.
The Vision EQS uses multiple LED lights—nearly 300 on the rear. Courtesy of Tim Adler

But the most distinctive design element is the cabin’s sculpted form. The vast dashboard, which features an upgraded MBUX infotainment system, flows into the airy center console, which runs through to the back and between those seats. The materials are equally inventive—especially the roof liner, made partially of recycled plastic from ocean waste.

“The Vision is 85 to 90 percent reality,” says Wagener. “The interior may end up being even more advanced. It will be the most modern luxury car on this planet.” Whether that’s prophecy or hyperbole won’t be known until the production EQS hits the market, perhaps as early as next year.

Autocar has heard from several of its sources that the Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan will not merely stand as an electric sedan flagship for the EQ line, or as just another powertrain variant for the S-Class line. The German automaker intends the EQS to represent the S-Class of electric vehicles, and it seems that means including a thunderous AMG version — without the aural thunder, of course. The concept EQS fits a 100-kWh lithium-ion battery pack in its EVA skateboard architecture, electric motors at each axle producing a combined 470 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, all good enough for a sprint from zero to 60 mph in about 4.0 seconds. AMG's take on that could boost output to figures that match the current S63 AMG powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, meaning more than 600 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque.

Although the regular EQS isn't due for another two years, and the AMG version sometime after that, Autocar suspects the hardcore model is being designed with Tesla's coming Plaid powertrain in mind. Our question about that assumption is that the current Model S P100D already makes more than 760 hp and 840 lb-ft., surpassing the mooted numbers for the AMG EQS. The California automaker's three-motor Plaid powertrain is rumored to work up something like 800bhp and at least 1,000 lb-ft. in top trim. And if all goes well over at Lucid, the lesser powertrain fitted to the Air sedan will produce 600 hp, while the top model adds another motor and makes 1,000 hp. Meaning AMG would need to have more cards up longer sleeves if it really wishes to play those games.

The prediction is that the EQS will offer a range of power outputs in both Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG formats, AMG tweaking its version of the drivetrain to serve in AMG-prepped versions of the EQE sedan and EQG battery-electric G-Class as well.

While being inducted into the S-Class lineage, design-wise the EQS will establish a new branch of the family, starting with its blunt bow and stern. The proportions make the electric four-door's footprint about the same size as the current CLS-sedan, with the Electric Vehicle Architecture creating passenger volume inside exceeding the standard, ICE-powered S-Class. Markus Schäfer, head of R&D, said, "The space, especially in the rear, sets new standards. And with the liftback tailgate, we’ve improved practicality." The CFRP clamshell hood comes standard fit, and the options sheet will include the concept's solid black grille and 22-inch wheels. The production interior will stick with the 3.8-foot glass instrument panel from the concept, its surfeit of screens running a new interface.

Mercedes has mentioned a 435-mile range on the WLTP cycle for the production car, but Autocar's sources told the mag to plan on "a real-world figure closer to 320 miles." Since that's a real-world number, we'll assume it can make the jump across the Atlantic without much damage. Efficiency should be a highlight, though, with the automaker said to bring Formula One technology to its brake regeneration system that will "provide levels of kinetic energy harvesting under braking far beyond those of existing road car systems."

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the first official picture of a production EQS electric car although it features a camouflage wrap. The German automaker launched its next-generation “EQ” electric vehicle with the EQC electric SUV last year.

It’s off to a slow start, but Daimler’s flagship brand is expected to ramp things up with several new models in the next few years.

The EQS, an electric sedan similar in size to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, is going to be one of them.

They unveiled the concept for the vehicle last year, and they plan to bring a production version to market next year.

The concept was quite futuristic.

We’ve now got a look at the production version of the Mercedes-Benz EQS in a new teaser image:

Despite the camouflage, we can see that the German automaker has toned down the production electric sedan compared to the concept.

Now it remains to be seen if Mercedes-Benz also toned down the specs of the EQS because they announced some quite impressive ones when unveiling the concept.

The automaker talked about a 100 kWh battery pack enabling “up to 700 km” of WLTP range, which should result in over 350 miles of EPA-rated miles.

Mercedes-Benz also mentioned that the EQS would be capable of charging at up to 350 kW, which would be a new industry-leading charging capacity.

Here’s all the technical data that Mercedes-Benz has released for the EQS electric sedan when unveiling the original concept:
CO2 emissions 0 g/km
Range (WLTP) up to 700km
Output approx. 350kW
Acceleration (0-100 km/h) < 4.5 seconds
Top speed > 200km/h
Peak torque approx. 760Nm
Battery capacity approx. 100kWh
Charging output (DC) 350kW
Drive system All-wheel drive (fully variable)
Length/height/width (mm) 5295/1436/ 2077
Wheelbase (mm) 3260Mercedes-Benz plans to fully unveil the production EQS later this year for a launch next year.

The EQS is expected to compete with the Tesla Model S, which has been stealing market share from Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class luxury sedan for years.

In the electric car world, entering the range race means butting heads with Tesla. Mercedes-Benz is ready for a tussle, and it announced the EQS it's putting the final touches on will offer more range than the Model S.

Speaking to shareholders and investors in July 2020, Daimler boss Ola Källenius confirmed the EQS will be able to cover over 700 kilometers between charges, a figure that converts to approximately 435 miles. If that figure is accurate, it will make the S-Class-sized sedan the longest-range series-produced electric vehicle in the world.

As of writing, the market's mileage champ is the Model S, which got a 402-mile rating from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2020. Not all testing cycles are created equal, however, and the figure quoted by Källenius was obtained using the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). Whether the EQS drives further than the Model S on a charge depends on the number it receives from the EPA — at least on paper.

European officials haven't put Tesla's updated Model S to the test yet, so its WLTP number isn't available. But, to add context, the electric Hyundai Kona earned a 279-mile rating in Europe and a 258-mile range in America. Or, look at Jaguar's I-Pace: it launched with a 292-mile range across the pond and a 234-mile range here (a software update increased that figure). We wouldn't be surprised if the EPA's testing cycle gives the EQS a final range number in the vicinity of 400, which would put it about on par with the Tesla — and still ahead of most rivals.

In reality, range — like gasoline mileage — depends on a wide variety of factors. They include the temperature, the accessories being used, what's in the car, how it's being driven, and the battery management software.

Although additional technical specifications haven't been published yet, it's interesting to note the 435-mile range was announced by the 2019 Vision EQS concept that previewed the EQS, meaning its other numbers may make the leap from the show floor to the showroom floor as well. It carried a 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that zapped a pair of electric motors (one per axle) into motion. It put 560 pound-feet of torque under the driver's right foot, and performed a sub-4.5-second sprint to 60 mph, which isn't bad considering it's likely very heavy.

"It's the first fully electric luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz based on an all-electric architecture. This opens up entirely new possibilities, from the position of the batteries to the car's design," predicted Källenius.

Mercedes-Benz will introduce the EQS before the end of 2020, and the model will begin arriving in showrooms several months after its debut. Although it will be S-Class-sized, it will not be marketed as a replacement for the sedan, which is about to return for a new generation. Both models will be sold side by side. It's reasonable to expect the EQS will cost more than the next S-Class, even with incentives factored in, due to the tech in it.

Mercedes officially put its plans to launch the EQC electric SUV on the back burner this week, opting instead to introduce its EQ sub-brand in the U.S. with the EQS electric sedan. Ola Källenius, Chairman of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG revealed this week on a call with reporters that the automaker plans to bring the EQS stateside in the summer 2021, shifting the EQC electric SUV to debut at a later date.

The EQS will be shown in production form in spring next year, and goes on sale stateside by summer. But Källenius did not give a firm timeline for the EQC's U.S. launch.

Among other things, this means Mercedes' first mass-market EV model in the U.S. is going to be in the same segment as the Tesla Model S, which is eight years old at this point. So for all the focus on electric SUVs and crossovers, Stuttgart's first EQ model out of the gate in the U.S. will mirror Tesla's first mass-market entry.
The EQC was originally scheduled to be the first Mercedes EQ model to go on sale in the States, but had already been pushed back an entire year back in December 2019. The EQC had been on sale Europe since mid 2019, with plans to be offered stateside in early 2020.

"In a recent direction from Daimler AG, it is a strategic decision to first support the growing customer demand for the EQC in Europe," the automaker said nearly a year ago, in explaining its move to delay the EQC.

The EQC sport utility was expected to debut in early 2020 with a $68,895 starting price, prior to the $7,500 federal tax credit and other incentives.

The EQS sedan, on the other hand, kicks things off with a near $96,000 starting price. The sedan was previewed by the Vision EQS concept, offering about a 300-mile range and a dual-motor setup offering all-wheel drive. The Vision EQS concept was quoted to have 469 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque at its disposal, along with the ability to propel itself from 0 to 60 in less than 4.5 seconds. The concept's design only distantly resembled the gas-engined S-Class, featuring a cab-forward design and a sleeker overall greenhouse. The concept also promised advanced automated driving systems.
Källenius also indicated on the call that the automaker is planning a battery-electric Maybach model, set to debut in about three years, as well as battery-electric G-Class aimed first and foremost at "urban adventurers."

The decision to postpone the EQC launch had earlier been tied to the feeling in the industry that the luxury electric crossovers landing stateside have seen only seen mild interest in the market, well short of the levels of sales some automakers might have been expecting. This could have signaled to Mercedes that demand for high-priced electric SUVs might have cooled off significantly since the first models hit the market, with interest among buyers now shifting to electric crossovers priced well below $40,000 -- the kind that Volkswagen plans to field in the U.S. soon.

The luxury automakers are really feeling the heat now. It must be really bad that they had to cancel an entire EV segment in US. Wonder if it could be due to Tesla?
Anyways we welcome the EQS.The more the merrier. Join the Lucid air in the fray as well. Good luck.

A pre-production EQS prototype was recently spied, showing off its dark blue color and funky-looking alloy wheels, which also feature a set of blue spokes intertwining with the normal ones, signaling the car’s electric roots in the process.

Unlike the super wide and low Vision EQS Concept, the production car looks a lot more civilian, with its cab-forward design and long wheelbase appearing to offer even more passenger space than the similarly sized S-Class.

As you can see from the short rear deck and visible cut lines, the production EQS is actually a fastback design, with the luggage compartment being accessible through a hatch that includes the rear windshield.

According to the most recent rumors and even Mercedes-Benz's own words, the luxury electric sedan will offer a range of at least 700 km (435 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the top model, but there will be at least two more versions.

All of them are based on a brand-new modular platform dedicated exclusively for electric cars called MEA (Modular Electric Architecture), which will be shared with a smaller sedan called the EQE and two electric SUVs.

Two electric motors, one for each axle, will power the top of the range model and should offer a combined output of around 500 horsepower, which should be good enough for a 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) acceleration time of around 4.5 seconds.

While the concept car used a 100-kWh lithium-ion battery, the production version is expected to get a 110 kWh one, of which around 100 will be actually usable.

Even though most of the interior will be quasi-identical with what you can find in an S-Class W223, save for the differently shaped AC outlets and increased space, a revolutionary UI called the ‘Hyperscreen’ will also be available down the road.

Spearheading an EV offensive that will eventually see every ICE-powered Mercedes-Benz model get its own electric counterpart, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS is set to become the ‘S-Class of EVs.’
24 photos

Previewed by the Vision EQS Concept, the electron-powered four-door coupe is actually a fastback design and will be about as large as an S-Class when it goes official in a few months from now, with the launch being scheduled for April 2021 and first deliveries expected in the Summer.

Unlike the sleeker-looking Vision EQS Concept, the production model is a lot tamer, but still a lot more swoopy than the S-Class, and despite the similar footprint is likely to offer slightly more passenger space thanks to the cab-forward design.

A pre-production prototype with minimal camouflage was recently spotted doing cold-weather testing in the northern parts of Sweden, where most German carmakers have winter testing bases.

Only a few design motifs are clearly visible from underneath the camo, with the frameless side windows and LED-bar taillights at the rear being some of the most evident.

Teased at the beginning of 2021, the so-called Hyperscreen UI inside will likely change the status quo in the luxury EV segment, which is currently populated by cars like the Lucid Air, Tesla Model S Plaid, Porsche Taycan and the recently unveiled Audi e-tron GT.

The EQS is expected to offer a range of at least 700 km (435 miles) for the top model, with at least two other versions to become available later on, plus a possible AMG model as well.

The top of the range model will get two electric motors, one powering each axle for all-wheel-drive, with the combined output being somewhere in the vicinity of 500 horsepower, which should be enough for a 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) acceleration time of less than 4.5 seconds.

Based on a brand-new modular platform not derived from an existing one and dedicated exclusively for electric cars, the EQS will also spawn a smaller sedan called the EQE and at least two SUVs.

The concept car made good use of a 100-kWh lithium-ion battery but the production model is expected to get a slightly larger one, with less expensive versions getting a smaller battery and only one electric motor powering the rear axle.

Speaking of which, the top of the range EQS should start at around $150,000 in the U.S., with the ‘entry level’ model being approximately $50,000 less expensive.

Mercedes-Benz is slowly, but steadily, moving forward with its EQ-related plans. We recently found out that it decided to give up on plans to bring the EQC (its first member of the EV-centric family) to the United States. No worries, though, because there are other models to look forward to.
41 photos
And we’re not going to deal with the little things, such as the recently introduced EQA compact crossover. Instead, the company is going for the head (Thor/Thanos pun intended) of the premium segment, as it has already programmed the EQS and EQE in sport utility guise for production at the Tuscaloosa, Alabama factory starting from 2022.

Before those two models arrive, though, we still need to check out the EQS luxury sedan first. The not-so classic but oh so classy sedan that should deliver a much-needed response to the successful Porsche Taycan isn’t out and about just yet, as Mercedes-Benz clearly takes its sweet time before finally revealing it.

Instead, the company has delivered yet another teaser for the flagship EV in the form of a new episode from the social media series “Unexpected Beauty,” which, on this occasion, deals with the “human centric interior concept” of the EQS. Better put your straps on, though, because we’re only at chapter two out of a total of six, so there’s a long way to go before we see the EV without any camouflage.

Well, at least another one of the layers of camo was peeled off. Mercedes-Benz provides a rather extensive first look at the uncamouflaged cabin, focusing on the driver and front passenger area dominated by the all-new MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) Hyperscreen user interface.

The four-door EV’s interior is described in the company’s native language, but the subtitles in English will automatically load for everyone to make sense of what’s being explained. And Mercedes is clearly trying to leave no stone unturned as it asked for help from futurist Kai Jardner, as well as its director of interior design (Hartmut Sinkwitz), and user-experience specialist Nina Hallier.

As far as we can tell from the portrait-oriented video (these social media networks, couldn’t they simply get along and agree to a singular video format?), the EQS’ dashboard is going to be dominated by the already-revealed MBUX Hyperscreen.

There are other elements that will morph into an artistic-looking integer, such as the ambient lighting elements, though. And, in case you were wondering what happened to them as they seemed to get lost in translation, the mid-air command gestures are making a strong comeback here as we catch sight of a designer waving the sunroof to stop at the 3:12 mark.

The flagship electric sedan, the EQS, debuts in August but its official debut date is April 15.

Mercedes-Benz did not play it safe and just make an EV variant of the all-new S-Class, and it instead went down the hard road of making a completely different equivalent electric model, the EQS. The manufacturer has already revealed several EQ-badged models, the EQA, EQC and EQV, but all of these are just electric versions of the GLA, GLC and V-Class respectively.

This makes the launch of the EQS, the first ground-up EQ model from Mercedes more significant. The news that Mercedes is launching a flagship sedan should be exciting enough, but this one is electric, jam-packed with tech, it looks quite radical as far as sedans go and it also promises impressive performance (there’s even talk of an AMG version of the EQS) and range (of up to 700 km / 434 miles WLTP) thanks to a big 108 kWh battery pack.

We knew Mercedes was going to pull the wraps off the EQS sometime this year, but now the manufacturer has officially confirmed when that will happen. At the end of a press release about how eco-friendly charging the EQS will be, the manufacturer also mentioned that it will be officially shown this August; other models will follow shortly, according to the automaker, but no time frame was provided.

Apparently, its official unveiling and presentation will take place on April 15.

What the manufacturer didn’t mention, though, is where it will show the EQS and for which market. We know that since Mercedes skipped the EQC and EQV for the US market, the EQS was going to be the first EQ to be sold in the States, so it could be launched Stateside first. At the same time, Mercedes is a proudly German (and European) brand and it usually prefers home soil to show off its new models.

Mercedes-Benz is giving us part of the EQS picture today by revealing the interior design and dropping a few intriguing details on the exterior. The headline is what you’re looking at above. That dash, termed the “Hyperscreen” by Mercedes, is the key to this interior. We saw a photo of the dash back at CES, but now Mercedes is showing us what it looks like when integrated into the EQS’ interior.

Beyond the three OLED screens (one 17.7-inch and two 12.3-inch), Mercedes is revealing a number of other innovations and notable items in the EQS interior. We’ll go over them all in their own sections below, but the big items include the interior design in general, new sound experience, fancy air filtration system, and a few exterior details.

Interior design

We’ll start with interior design in general. The new Hyperscreen might grab your attention at first, but it’s not even the standard dash. Unless you choose to option the Hyperscreen, the dash panel looks very similar to the new S-Class. Basically, you can choose to have a big screen for the passenger to mess with, or fill that space with massive swaths of trim (wood, metals and more).

The Hyperscreen forces a decidedly minimalist design for most of the dash, but it’s not without some flair. Every EQS will get the same air vent treatment with a rose gold piece of trim in the upper vents and turbine-shaped side vents. You’ll see a large piece of wood trim graces the center console area where it covers up the cupholders. This center area itself is floating above an open storage area below it — no transmission tunnel means more utility.

The door panels are designed to make the individual elements like the door pull look like they’re floating in space. Mercedes came up with two new seat designs, one for comfort and the other with a sport focus (for the AMG Line interior). Elaborate quilting and stitching is found on these leather seats. The seats even have illuminated piping on them that glows with the other interior ambient lighting. And while we’re on lighting, the EQS represents a new level of attention there for Mercedes. There are Mercedes star-cut elements lasered into the dash trim that is then backlit, giving you the impression of stars on the dash. You’ll notice the new colored piping throughout in the darkened photos, as Mercedes tries its hardest to turn light into a luxury item.

Mercedes didn’t talk about the rear seat, but the photos reveal tablets for rear passengers and all the legroom you’d ever need.

Sound

There’s a lot going on here, and none of it concerns the sound of an engine or exhaust. However, Mercedes believes that even an electric car should be heard. There are three different “soundscapes” that owners will be able to enjoy: Silver Waves, Vivid Flux and Roaring Pulse. Silver Waves is meant to be hardly noticeable, but enjoyable background noise. Vivid Flux is for the EV enthusiast who wants to hear high-tech electronic sounds. And Roaring Pulse (supposedly coming with an OTA update after the car launches) is meant to make you feel like you’re in an AMG or high performance machine. All the sounds are played over the 15-speaker Burmester stereo system — Mercedes allowed us a quick listen over a video call, and they sure do make the car sound different inside than any other EV — Vivid Flux is our current favorite.

The second bit of news as it concerns sounds emanating from the EQS is something called Energizing Nature. On the surface, it looks like the Hyundai/Kia Sounds of Nature on steroids. The natural sounds were composed by acoustic ecologist (what a neat job!) Gordon Hempton. You can choose between Forest Glade, Sounds of the Sea and Summer Rain. Each sound is accompanied by their own interior climate program. For example, Sounds of the Sea is paired with a rhythm of cool and warm air being blown from the vents and a fitting light color.

All nap enthusiasts will also be pleased to learn of a new Power Nap program that you can activate when taking a break on a long drive or waiting for your EQS to charge. It’ll help you fall asleep by moving the seat into a resting position, closing the windows and blinds, activating the ionization of air, adjusting the ambient lighting and finally playing soothing music and displaying a starry sky across the screens. Your EQS will then wake you up after a healthy nap time by activating a pleasing wake-up sound, sending a fragrance into the cabin, subtly activating the massage program and turning the ventilated seats on. Once awake, it automatically raises the seat back up, opens the blinds and readies the car for driving. Does it get any better?

Air filtration

There’s been a renewed focus on filtering out particles through a car’s air filtration system ever since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Mercedes-Benz was surely engineering its new high-tech filtration system before our world turned upside down, but it’s intriguing nonetheless. A new option (first for Mercedes) called “Energizing Air Control Plus” will be available in the EQS that includes an intensive HEPA filter and filtration system. For some context, the new filter is nearly three gallons in volume and takes up a good chunk of space under the front hood.

Ultimately, Mercedes promises that it’s capable of filtering out sulfur and nitrogen dioxide odors from the car, as well as viruses and other bacteria. That means no more horrid smells on your trip to work past that sulfur-smelling area anymore. The recirculating air feature will also clean the air inside the vehicle to keep it as fresh as can be. You’ll be able to keep track of the particulate levels both inside and outside the vehicle using the screen, and it’ll even recommend that you close the windows in areas with low air quality. In case perfectly clean air is not enough, Mercedes is introducing a new fragrance mode called No.6 Mood Linen that supposedly smells of fig trees, cool air and linen.

Exterior details

We wish Mercedes had shown us the car with no camouflage already, but that’ll require some more patience. Today, it told us how the new “one-bow” design (a single unbroken body line from fender to rear bumper) contributes to it being the most aerodynamic production car in the world. Its coefficient of drag is a minuscule 0.20, which beats every other car on the market today, even the new Tesla Model S that is quoted at 0.208. Its drop shape (the rear end tapering backwards) is what Mercedes called out as one big key to its low drag. One other neat tidbit: There are no shut lines in the hood to give it the cleanest lines possible in front.

Mercedes also told us about its new exterior lighting design. The headlights have a three-dot running light signature that are connected via a light band. The grille itself has a subtle light-up star pattern in it. At the rear, the taillights are meant to look like a 3D helix, inspired by old helical elements in lightbulbs.

This could go on forever, but we’ll wait till we get a more hands-on experience with the Hyperscreen and Mercedes’ updated MBUX to take that one on. It’s already looking more promising than the current MBUX, as it uses a “zero-layer” design to make getting to certain functions easier. Artificial intelligence and an even smarter voice assistant should make it all the better to use, too. Our biggest complaint with the current MBUX system is its complex and difficult-to-use menu structure. This could be the answer we’re looking for.

Imagine spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a car in 2022 just to get UI that is laggy and looks like Windows Media Player 11 from 2006, and the tablet in the back seat is an Android tablet from 2014

It is odd, especially at the top of the front wheel where it has that weird transition.

It's supposed to be the flagship vehicle. May be that's where the Flag pole is attached.

Something something Maybach signature. Peons like us won't know how to appreciate it.

Thank goodness they are available in a single solid color.

The EQS could have become an S class killer, if at all.

Now if they market it for $35k and can make them in millions, I agree that Tesla has some real competition. LOL.

The world of electric vehicles is growing rapidly, and that will mean a slew of performance variants coming soon. The latest we’ve seen testing is the AMG version of the brand spanking new EQS.

Mercedes‘ electric halo car, the EQS packs all of the latest tech, but the brand has promised that a 715 HP version is on the way, and we might be looking at it. Although it’s a little difficult to differentiate this from other models thanks to the camouflage, the automaker couldn’t hide those big ceramic discs or those yellow brake calipers.

Although it’s effectively camouflaged, there is the faintest whisper of a spoiler on the trunk, which might suggest that Mercedes is willing to sacrifice just a little bit of that 0.20 drag coefficient in the name of downforce.

Little outlets behind the rear wheels also suggest performance as well as Mercedes‘ mastery of the air. With camouflage on the front and rear, it’s hard to know how else the brand will choose to telegraph the car’s performance bona fides.

Of course, performance figures aren’t known at this point but the EQS 580 already makes 516 HP and 630 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to get you leaping off the line and all the way to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds.

Tipping the scales at up to 5,699 lbs (2,582 kg), though, we hope AMG will be able to do a little bit of work reigning in that curb weight.

Mercedes has already registered trademarks for the names EQS43, EQS53, and EQS63, so it’s anyone’s guess which one this will be. No matter what, it should be impressive.

Rumor has it the car will debut late this year or early in 2022.
