The point is that it is supposed to be a 4 door coupe Soopa. A lot of fanfare has been happening about this offering from MB lately. Not surprised you missed it, way too much to keep up with these days....

I like it I guess, except that it reminds me of the new Buick concepts.

Exactly. Tons of clues from the Mayback design. Lots of MB cars will follow clues from the Mayback from now on.

Re: Mercedes Benz CLS concept [official pictures]

The bottom left picture of these looks like a Jaq S-type from that angle.

err..... now that I think about it, strike my last comment from the record. I don't know what I was smoking.

The similarity was with that curved line that goes along the side. But aside from that they look different.

They are supposed to build this or something like it to slot between the C-class and E-class 4 doors. There is a huge hole as far as price between the C and E. I like it!

there is no way this would go in between C and E... it looks as well appointed as an E... and the design would probably appeal more to the high end hob knob crowd.

i can see several of these things sitting outside the stables at Saratoga next summer.

Overkill? Well, I think BMW is way worse with all the cars they are reportedly trying to add to their lineup...?

A coupe has 2 doors, so this ain't a coupe. I know that some people call a hatchback a coupe (it's a f'ing hatchback), so maybe it's the same people calling this 4 door sedan a coupe

I think someone is screwing w/ us on the coupe/sedan definition.

What makes this car a 4 door coupe is its slopy top after the B-pillaer. That way, it looks much better, yet it has 4 doors. That's all.

You can even tell from the denotation of the car that Mercedes perceives this car as a coupe more than a sedan. It's the CLS. As in CLK.

Clear Vision: Mercedes CLS goes after growing luxo-coupe crop

By GREG KABLE

Taking the wraps off its SLR supercar wasn’t the only matter of business for Mercedes-Benz in Frankfurt. It’s also going after BMW’s 6 Series.

The CLS—a swoopy car Mercedes is calling a coupe—is set to reach the States by early ’05. It was unveiled in concept form at the German show and will be virtually unchanged in production form.

Based on the E-Class, the CLS slots into the M-B lineup between the CLK and CL, and will compete with BMW’s forthcoming coupe on performance and price. The car will also run with a future production version of the Audi Nuvolari. In fact, it is being referred to internally as a “Jaguar-fighter,” and designers are said to have borrowed much from Jag’s overall design themes.

FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW MAIN PAGE

Typical Jaguar design elements such as the long bonnet, low roof, shallow side glass and sloping tail are integral to the shape. Bucking a current coupe trend toward rear-hinged doors, the concept’s long rear doors open in a conventional manner—hinging at the front on a strengthened side member. The B-pillar is retained through clever styling tricks. But darkened paneling on the pillars and tight shut lines between the doors give it an almost pillar-less appearance from some angles. The coupe is longer, wider and lower than an E-Class.

The CLS show car sports a new twin-turbo diesel inline six pushing out 265 hp and 413 lb-ft. That’s enough, says Mercedes, to propel its new four-door from 0 to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds. Production versions of the new rear-driver will come with a wide range of V6 and V8 powerplants as well as Mercedes’ new seven-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive should be available sometime after launch.

Of course, AMG intends to get its mitts on the car, planning a 500-hp CLS55 version to run on the German carmaker’s supercharged 5.4-liter V8—as seen in the E55 and SL.

I like the rear styling, not sure about the headlights though.

The interior is like a gucci/prada purse or something! Way too feminine on the color scheme.

Mercedes gives the go-ahead for the new CLS-class

Mercedes gives the go-ahead for the new CLS-class
Posted by: kak on Thursday, November 06, 2003 - 01:51 PM CET

The much-admired four-door Vision CLS Coupé study that Mercedes-Benz presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) is going into series production. The decision was taken by the Stuttgart-based automobile manufacturer on the strength of the extremely positive results of a survey carried out during the IAA. "The overwhelming majority of drivers surveyed by us are enthusiastic about the four-door coupé.

We are thus confirmed in our idea for this innovative vehicle concept and have given the go-ahead for the new Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class to go into production," said Professor Jürgen Hubbert today, Member of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG and head of the Mercedes Car Group in Stuttgart. Preparations for the production of the four-door coupé can thus get underway at the tradition-steeped DaimlerChrysler factory in Sindelfingen.

With the CLS-Class, Mercedes-Benz is creating a hitherto unique synthesis of two different vehicle concepts: the exciting design and the highly emotive character of a coupé in perfect harmony with the comfort and functionality of a saloon. Thus, the four-door vehicle clearly offers a great deal more added value than other coupés, at the same time as arousing the interest of those people who have a passion for motor cars and motoring. In the words of Professor Hubbert: "The dialogue with the public at the IAA confirmed that, with the CLS, we are a coupé generation ahead of the rest."

The Vision CLS is the latest in a long line of crowd-pulling Mercedes showcars. In recent years, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer has unveiled a whole host of new and inspiring vehicle concepts, most of which have gone on to enter series production. Successful examples of this include the A-Class, the M-Class, the SLK Roadster, the SLR-McLaren and the future Grand Sports Tourer. They underscore the role of Mercedes-Benz as a trendsetter in the automotive world and the importance of vehicle studies as forerunners for new vehicle classes. With the CLS-Class, Mercedes-Benz will also be defining a new, interesting market segment.

Top Mercedes technology to meet the highest requirements

Equipped with leading-edge safety technology, such as adaptive front airbags, window and sidebags, as well as belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats, the new CLS-Class fulfils the high standards associated with Mercedes luxury-class cars. Furthermore, the four-door coupé offers a whole host of other innovations that make driving both safer and more comfortable. These include the AIRMATIC DC pneumatic suspension, the 7G-TRONIC seven-gear automatic transmission, the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC™) brake system, a bi-xenon Active Light System, cornering light and the sensor-controlled THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control.
