Hidden behind the development abbreviation C216, the next generation of Mercedes’ largest coupe is being tested and prepared for its world premiere at the Geneva Auto Salon in March 2006.
DESIGN
The 6th generation of Mercedes' top-of-the-line model will grow in length, width as well as sporty and elegant character. The design will be similar to the next S-class with some touches from the new CLS model recently unveiled at Geneva in March. The side profile with the curved roof line and the frameless windows give the car a very dynamic appearance especially with the so-called "Character Line" which runs across the profile of the car into the rear lights. Another new design element that will be exclusively used for the next CL- and S-classes are the large, wide front fenders that run towards the front of the car.
ENGINES
The “smallest” CL engine in the CL 500 will be replaced with a new V8 550 engine with 5.5 liter capacity and a power of 388hp. The CL 600 remains unchanged (V12 bi-turbo - 500hp) as well as the AMG model CL 65 AMG with 612hp. The new CL 63 AMG will get a power boost to 500hp, and so it will replace the CL 55 AMG. Rumors say that a diesel hybrid engine could find its way into the next CL-class although not confirmed by Mercedes yet.
TECHNOLOGY
Being a technical twin of the S-class, the CL will share many new features. The new CL will feature cutting-edge technology systems that were partly presented in the Concept F500 Mind research vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. The technical highlights of the next CL include:
Mercedes may also give up using SBC braking system for the next S/CL and replace it with hydraulic brakes which are cheaper and equally effective. This comes in an effort to reduce costs in addition to minimizing electronic faults. For example, recent software problems caused a recall of about 700,000 E and SL class vehicles.
The new CL-Class platform could be a test mule for 2 new future models: A CL-Class Cabriolet and a Maybach Coupe with the number of doors still to be decided. It could come as a typical coupe with 2 doors or as a 4-door coupe like the CLS-Class. Since the CLS-Class was originally intended to be a Maybach we might see DaimlerChrysler continuing with this project and present its third model.

- Through infrared technology a new night vision system will help drivers get a better view.
- In response to BMW’s iDrive and Audi’s MMI a new central mounted control system is being developed and tested.
- Lane departure warning system will alert the driver if the vehicle wanders from its lane.
- Improved Active Body Control (ABC)
- Parking assistant equipped with small cameras in the side mirrors and bumpers.

Pit Stop?
I think it looks good. It won't be this extreme in production, but you can definetly see the cues of current Mercedes styling. I'm curious as to the "CL 63" designation, will this mean the beloved 55 AMG engine will soon go the way of the dodo? If so, those with orders on the 55 AMG might want to change the engine that's going in their cars. Or perhaps the 55 AMG will remain in "lesser" Benzes while the flagship gets the new powerplants to show off....

The tails seem like they're the piece that BMW cut out of the M5 front air dams (very sexay). The headlights are very CLS-ey. I mean the new (as of yet, unreleased) MB CLS class.

I mean Mercedes has developed itself in a class leading engine-power auto manufacturer (ala-Nissan). They have been lacking a little with their smaller engines, but the "upper stuff" really kicks. Instead of waiting for Cadillac and Lexus to enlarge their V8s to 5 liters, they dont wait and enlarge their 5 liter V8 to 5.5 liters and almost 400 HP. That's what GM should be doing.

doesnt give me that same feeling that the current CL does, the rear of the first screams CLK and the hood isnt long enough nor is the whole car large enough, looks like an enlarged clk

those pics make the car look like cock
wtf
i seriuosly hope those pics are off...the current CL screams out BOSSMAN, CEO, ....the pic in the last post makes it look like a fag car
Wrong Grille! KEEP HEADLIGHTS SEPERATED! wtf..i hope this isnt true.
I'm sure it will be big, but the shape and look of it...it could pass for a fucking next gen C-class...not a CL!
[/end rant]

I'm not feeling it at all. Doesn't seem like it would have any road presence. The current CL is like "Move Bitch, before I buy and sell your ass" you know?

on to the next one...
This will be interesting. It's going to be hard to improve upon the current model. I was lucky enough to be able to drive a 02 CL55 with less than 200 miles on it, and it was a fantastic automobile. Tastefully powerful. Exhilerating, yet quiet.
Simply beautiful.

Saw a Blk/Blk 02 CL500 w/48k miles on it for $39,000 at a local dealer recently.
I think that is one hell of a deal for that car....just need to come up with 10 extra G's!

CL of Authenticity: Spies give us a look at the next Mercedes CL - - By GREG KABLE - - Source: Autoweek
Snap... Gotcha! Lightly disguised prototypes of Mercedes-Benz’s new CL luxury sports coupe were caught testing on public roads by AutoWeek’s spy photographers a year before the car goes public. The CL is scheduled to be unveiled at the grand opening of the newly expanded Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart in late May 2006.
The big two-door, codenamed C216, uses the same underpinnings as the new S-Class sedan. The cars will be produced at the company’s Sindelfingen plant in southern Germany.
The new CL will be marginally longer and wider than today’s car. Photos reveal today’s distinctive twin rounded-headlamp design will be supplanted by a single slim bi-xenon treatment that wraps back into the fenders for a more angular look.
Frameless side windows and a heavily curved roofline maintain the theme of today’s model, but body surfacing is tauter and the bumpers more sculptured, giving the car a more aggressive appearance. Bulging front wheel arches and broader rear haunches enhance the effect. Hidden under the disguise on the spied prototype is a deep styling line on the side of the car extending to the tail lamps.
The four-seat interior is designed around a new rotary control device similar to BMW’s iDrive and Audi’s MMI. It sits between the front seats and works in combination with a large monitor mounted in its own binnacle on the dashboard.
The CL, along with the S-Class, continue in their roles as technological showcases for Mercedes. Standard features include air suspension, active body control, adaptive headlamps, radar-based active cruise control, and up to eight airbags.
Advanced features expected on the CL are an infrared night vision system that uses cameras to detect obstacles in low light conditions, and second-generation Pre-Safe, with close-proximity radar that warns the driver when braking distances to cars or objects ahead are judged to be critical.
Despite the technological push, the CL’s brakes will eschew the troublesome electrohydraulic Sensotronic Brake Control system—used on E-Class and SL—for traditional hydraulics. The new stoppers will be upgraded to simulate SBC’s many functions, including using ESP-Plus mechanicals to lightly apply the calipers in wet conditions to dry the discs. It will also provide hill-hold and stop-and-go functions, in which the car can be made to creep forward and then automatically brake in slow-moving traffic dependent on the distance to the car in front.
Powerplants include a new range of four-valve-per-cylinder V8 engines being readied for many upper-range Mercedes models. Details are guarded, but we expect to see both 4.6-liter and 5.5-liter versions in CL450 and CL550 models. Also planned is a follow-up to today’s CL600 with a slightly more powerful version of the existing twin-turbo 5.5-liter V12 borrowed from the Maybach sedan.
That’s not all, though. AMG will upgrade the CL55 with a high-revving, 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8, replacing the supercharged 5.4-liter engine found in today’s model. Crowning the line will be a follow-up to the storming CL65 AMG. It retains the twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 engine, but with slightly increased output to offset a weight gain.
AutoWeek sources contend there are plans to offer the big coupe with a 4.0-liter 315-hp V8 common-rail turbodiesel in a CL400 CDI model, but don’t hold your breath waiting for it to appear in North America. And while Mercedes is developing a hybrid powertrain for the S-, R- and M-Classes, it is not expected to appear in the more sporting CL.
The 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic is the only transmission for the CL. On AMG models it is modified to include two paddle-style shifters behind the steering wheel in place of button-style shifters found on today’s models.

As much as I like that car, I couldn't do another 2 door any bigger than the CL. I think 2 door cars look better smaller, and this car is going to be even bigger than the current CL? yikes. Not that it's really a concern, I'll never have the means for that lol :P

I have to say...I'm a fan of big coupes...something very stately about them...

^ agree
grand touring coupes are the best.
i like this design, although i hate the grille. its not aggressive...too rounded and protruding.
my favorite are the older s class coupes
i dont care how hard they try. no CL will even come close to comaparing with this-
