from my understand, the RX8 has been a sales flop. it was hot when it first came out, but with all the controversy w/ the engine output, problems w/ oil leakage, etc, etc, the car doesn't sell.

but in a way, they are shooting themselves in the foot.

Yup, they are partial owners. I just read an article about parts bins in GM and Ford being shared with their other companies so it reduces design time but adds the potential for problems across many cars.

I thought I read they were going to do a release of the RX-7 now with a true sports coupe feeling and look with two doors, and more power. I may have read it here, but not sure.

These HP numbers will be certianly underrated as to avoid the RX-8 fiasco.

Sounds more like fag lights

ha! after the debacle with RX-8, they have a pretty prominent disclosure that the published specs are "Targeted Estimates."

Incase anyone hasn't seen this, here we go Mazda 6 MPS Specs

For the lazy, Mazda lists it as 256hp (191KW) and 280 lf-ft in EU trim, with 0-60mph in 6.6sec.

I hope this is underrated as that number is incredibly slow for a turbo'd AWD. Don't the Evo and STi pull under 5sec? while they have more horsepower even the WRX can pull better than that.

Fastest number I've ever heard, but C&D got their long-term Mazda6s v6 to 60 in 6.4 sec

[quote=C&D Long Term article]Within two weeks of its arrival, we ran the 6 out to the track for its first performance tests. It ripped to 60 mph in a quick 6.4 seconds. It covered the quarter-mile in 15.1 seconds at 93 mph and circled the skidpad at 0.84 g. Stopping from 70 mph required only 178 feet. The last 626ES manual we tested took a leisurely 7.6 seconds to get to 60 mph, covered the quarter in 15.9 seconds at 88 mph, and pulled only 0.79 g on the skidpad. For once, the advertising wasn't sugar-coating the reality: it was zoom-zoom and then some.[quote]

Whoa glad to see Mazda is stepping it up a bit.

But why that cheap red interior lighting?

I'm very impressed with it, would much rather have this than a Evo or STi. I know it wont be as edgy, but I wont feel like I'm driving a F&F styled car, and the interior is damn nice. Way to go Mazda.

The Evo and STi are rally inspired vehicles....you either appreciate them for what they are or you don't. Obnoxious looking rally cars were around long before the F&F set.

They are all about performance, no more no less.

I got the chance to take a 6 from Washington DC to Norfolk, VA this past weekend. This car was alot of fun to drive, and has nice power throughout. I like (not love) the interior and overall comfort was pretty decent. However, did that so-called "power" driver seat due a number on my back!!! No matter how many positions I tried to settle in, I could just not stop it from being uncomfortable!! Normal everyday driving it probably wouldn't be soooooo bad but just on a two and a half hour trip I was sore!!!! We got back on Saturday afternoon so I decided to hope in a TSX to compare. Hey what can I say?; NO COMPARISON what so ever!!!!!!!! I mean as soon as I sat in the TSX my back immediately gave me that relief feeling of having support and me and the salesman took a drive past dulles just to let her loose on the open highway...........to make a long story short I asked the dealer to just "take" the 6 and give me the TSX!!! I wouldn't have any "hard" feelings over it

Mazdaspeed6
Story and photos by Paul Williams

With the successful and recent launch of the Mazda3 sedan and GT, the Mazda6 - in station wagon, five-door hatch and sedan versions - the radical Mazda RX-8, and the upcoming Mazda5 in June 2005, you'd think this busy company might take a break for a while.

But when you're on a roll...

Early in 2005, look for a special high-performance version of the Mazda6 sedan called the Mazdaspeed6 which was recently shown at the Paris Motor Show. First seen in 2002 as a concept car called the Mazda6 MPS,
the production Mazdaspeed6 (as it will be known in North America) will be a showpiece for the "zoom zoom" character adopted by Mazda.

The car is designed to optimize handling, stability, acceleration and braking performance for the Mazda6, and establishes the top-end for the model.

"It's the most powerful Mazda ever," says Mazda marketing chief Steve Odell.

Built in Japan (unlike the Mazda6, which is assembled in the U.S.) the car will be powered by a 2.3-litre direct-injection turbocharged engine making 280-horsepower. Challenging the "no replacement for displacement" dictum, this small engine will also produce 280 lbs.-ft. of torque @ 3,000 r.p.m., propelling the car from 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds, and to a top speed of 240 km/h (European specs).

Some may consider the use of a four-cylinder engine - as opposed to a six or eight cylinder, or maybe a rotary - in a limited edition sports sedan as a risky choice. Mazda executives explain that they wanted to work on their own engine, rather than the "corporate" 3.0-litre V6 that was not developed in-house.

Indeed, other companies are now using four-cylinder engines to great effect in high-performance applications (like Subaru in its 250-horsepower Legacy GT and Honda's 240 horsepower S2000).

A custom six-speed manual is the only available transmission, and no automatic is planned at this stage.

While the Mazdaspeed6 is recognizable as a variation of the Mazda6, certain exterior modifications are unique to the car. The hood is 45 mm taller than the standard Mazda6, in order to accommodate the induction system that channels air from the five-point upper grille to the turbo intercooler.

Because the hood is raised, the fenders acquire shoulders that also distinguish the front of the car, giving it a more muscular front end. The 18" aluminum wheels are specific to the Mazdaspeed6.

At the rear, an aerodynamic bumper integrates a diffuser for the dual exhaust system, and a compact rear lip spoiler sits on the decklid.

Ornamentation is kept to the minimum, as Mazda strives for a look of sophistication and restraint, rather than tuner-type body cladding and graphics.

The signature colour, Moist Silver Metallic is new and exclusive to this model. The colour is designed to express the "elegant simplicity" found in Japanese ink paintings, according to Mazda. Nuances of colour reflect when viewed from different angles and in different settings.

Says Mazda Canada chief of marketing Greg Young, "Mazda's reason for making this car is to show what we can do; that 'zoom zoom' isn't just something we talk about."

The Mazdaspeed6 will be available in Canada in March/April 2005. Pricing will be announced closer to launch date.

I wonder if that red text will sway some buyers.

Translation:

"The Ford 3.0L has no room for improvement and we're scared it will blow up if we turbo it"

And a 2.3L 4 cylinder will make for a far better balanced car.

No bad translation! it should read:
"The Ford 3.0L is waste of time for improvement and we're scared it will blow up at any time even not touching it!"

Some More details

More Speed: Mazda's upcoming MazdaSpeed6 to boost automaker's performance lineup
MARK RECHTIN | Automotive News
Posted Date: 11/15/04

LAS VEGAS -- Mazda North American Operations will broaden its lineup of high-performance models next summer with the launch of the MazdaSpeed6.

The special version of the Mazda6 will be powered by a 274-hp turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder engine. It will be sold only with all-wheel drive, limited-slip differential and a six-speed manual transmission.

The upgraded suspension features increased spring rates, stiffer shocks and thicker stabilizer bars. Antilock brakes and dynamic stability control will be standard.

The car's appearance also will change. It will have different front and rear fascias, new rocker panels and 18-inch wheels.

The interior will have sport bucket seats, drilled alloy foot pedals, automatic climate control and a 200-watt Bose CD stereo.

Mazda expects to sell between 3,000 and 5,000 units by summer 2006 at a sticker price less than $30,000.

While the Mazda6 lineup includes a five-door hatchback and wagon, the MazdaSpeed6 will come only as a sedan.

Mazda has released sporty versions of the Miata and the outgoing Protege. The Mazda3 has since replaced the Protege. Company executives are uncertain about plans for a MazdaSpeed3.

Under 30K for 274HP and AWD

My local Mazda dealership has DOZENS of them sitting around the lot. If someone wanted one, they could probably get one for below invoice; especially those taxi cab yellow ones.

I thought of going into Mazda and lowballing them with a $20G bid just to see what they'll do.

But where is the transmission going to come from? Will it be a US tranny or a Japan Tranny?

I was looking at the Mazda6 but I didn't want a 4-cyl version. I didn't want the V6 because of its relation to Ford. But when the turbo version comes out, I might take another look at Mazda.

I wonder how much would it cost to slap the turbos from MazdaSpeed6 onto a non-turbo Mazda 6, 2.3L???

The protege and protege-speed share almost the same parts and the turbo was just slapped on...

Picked up an RX8 a few weeks ago.

Not the fastest off the line, but a beast on the track. Took it to my local auto-x event and was faster or just as fast as all M3's and 350Z's.

Out handles our CL-S's by far and will out run them easy.

The build quality is excellent and the car if comfortable as hell.

Just my two cents. Don't bash the car until you drive it for real on a track.

i have driven one that belongs to a friend street racing but not at a track. i suppose it out handles the CL-S but i gurantee it will not outrun one...
outrun as in a straight line i assume you ment?
