Yup...
The CX-30 we got recently had really opened my eyes just how good Mazda is...
Other than the car feels a little under powered,or i should say it does not feel like it has 186 hp, rest of the car inside and out feel very very premium for a $27k car...

I absolutely loved the driving dynamics of my base 2014 Mazda3, but it definitely felt under-powered (2.0l I4 that made 155 hp) ....

Could this complicate the enticing news of the Mazda 6 going RWD w/an I6 on the new platform architecture ...???

I don't know what rock I've been living under but holy crap!!!!! Mazda is making the 6 RWD AND giving it an I6?!?!?! What the hell is Honda's excuse not to make a RWD platform for the TLX? This is incredible!!!! I have so much respect for Mazda right now wow.

Yes but I mean Honda has money too. They aren't as large as Toyota but they aren't some small boutique brand either.

I've loved the look of the 3rd gen 6, but the lack luster engine swayed me away.
if it really is an I6 and RWD, i will seriously consider that to replace my 07 3GTL.

The powertrain has been my biggest issue with modern Mazdas. The interior fit and finish is TOP NOTCH, the driving dynamics are awesome too. All that was missing was a nice powertrain. RWD and I6 is a hell of a package!

May be Toyota is planning to reuse their “to be discontinued” Lexus GS platform and recycle it as Mazda 6, so it’s a win win for all .
#934
Maybe they'll use the GS platform bones and swap out mazda stuff. Both ways excited to see what happens. I was kind of disappointed that Mazda dropped all their 6 cylinder engines.

Lexus GS is the lightest vehicle in its class with smallest turning circle and biggest boot.. construction wise its the most advanced Lexus sedan.

The top trip Mazda 6 might be competitive with the base model equivalent BMW which isn't uncommon nowadays in the mainstream brands. But I don't see it being competitive in the level up from base lol.

I have yet met anyone who cross shopped a BMW and a Mazda....
So let's be realistic here...
but there is a chance that Mazda will take a good chunk of sales from Honda/Acura ....

Didn't you get your used? then at that price point.. sure... Many ppl cross shopped used Luxury brand vs. new non luxury brand since they are similarly priced.
New vs. new... nope.
Someone who wants too buy a Gucci bag does not care what Guess is offering...

True, the C had an original MSRP of $50k, not a 6 competitor, new v new.

In the early to mid-2000s my wife and I were rolling pretty well, starting with my 1999 328i 5-Speed, I then graduated to a 2002 530i 5-Speed (with Premium and Sport packages) which we picked up in Munich and drove around Europe for a few weeks before dropping it off at E.H. Harms to be shipped over to the States. Yeah, times were good.
Then 2008 happened; my wife's Fortune-50 company literally imploded overnight, and my contracting gig got instantly terminated. My next car after the 5er was a low-buck 2009 Mazda3 i True Value Edition (i.e. a 2.0 liter, 5-Speed sedan with a low-ball interior, but razor sharp BMW(ish) handling). So yeah, as I wrote above, not exactly BMW cross-shopping, but hey, at a third of the cost, as close as I could come to the feel of a BMW.

I went from a brand new 2003 Infiniti G35C to a $1,500 1993 Mazda MPV for about a year back in the 2004...
Shit happens.... But those got nothing to do with the market.
If i had to downgrade right now, i probably would get a base model WRX... can't beat it for the price. Like you said, it is not crossshoppin.

I'm a "glass is half-full" kind of guy, there are actually a few silver linings to this whole thing; before I found out about the "other" debt, we down-sized to the extreme (from a huge house to a little apartment which uses sweat-equity to partially pay for the rent) in an attempt to pay everything off. Then I found out about the money I "didn't spend" and got so pissed I left the business and got a real job, a job which has evolved into a great job. Now with the bankruptcy over, I have the lowest monthly overhead (i.e. rent, utilities, vehicle expenses, and insurances) since 1982, and yet I'm making pretty good money. Yeah, those five years sucked financially, and because I couldn't buy a new car during the bankruptcy (no new debt without a judge's approval), I ended up buying my 2006 TL 6MT for cash; and the TL is a car I like so much, even though I can now go out and buy something much newer, I have no such plans.

Not sure if this is a response to my comment but when I said competitive I meant in terms of performance but yes undoubtedly people would much rather buy a base 3 series or C250 before they bought a loaded accord or 6 or Camry...etc.

I don’t know if you can just group buyers based on price/vehicle category when it comes to cross shipping. But it’s the easiest, most logical way.
I cross shopped a Mazda 6, Fiesta ST, and a BRZ.
What I’ve been looking at lately is even more all over the place. Basically the only consistent things for me now are 4-doors and manual.
bummer that Mazda doesn’t offer the manual with the turbo. No sign of a Mazdaspeed anything, either

Null and proud of it
LOL, yeah, shit happens alright. When I bought the Mazda3 I didn't know my (then and now former) business partner had three credit-cards and two lines of credit in my name. He started a niche business (with the best of intentions mind you); thinking we were all going to get rich. Yeah, about that. When my wife (then a V.P.) got cut when her company imploded, she took our entire life savings and opened a business (we're talking 7-figures here), and while it was well received by the community, it never really grew enough to pay for itself, much less replace the loss of her substantial income. She declared Chapter-7 something like eight years ago and got through it pretty quickly. Unfortunately when I found out about the 7-figures of debt my business partner had run up in my name coupled with the family debt I'd run up hoping her business would succeed, I realized "shit was getting serious"; serious enough the Mazda3 needed to go in favor of a 2001 Accord. I ended up declaring Chapter-13 a little over five years ago and finally had it discharged earlier this year.

As i mentioned, my gf got a CX30 and her sister got a new All trac a week before.
Unless you really need the super duper AWD of Subaru's, for everyday driving CX30 win in every category by a mile... their payment is almost exactly the same too.

The 2021 Mazda 6 sedan is receiving many of the same updates bestowed upon its crossover stablemates. Along with slightly more torque for its optional turbocharged engine, the Mazda 6 also gets some new connectivity features and a Carbon Edition model with appearance tweaks.
The base naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine is unchanged, but the optional turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four receives an extra 10 lb-ft of torque, for a total of 320. A six-speed automatic transmission remains the sole gearbox, and there's no word on either the promised diesel engine or all-wheel drive that Mazda announced for the 6 a while ago. For what it's worth, Mazda still lists the diesel-powered 6 on its consumer website as an upcoming vehicle, but we're not holding out hope at this point.
While the 6 isn't getting the updated infotainment system from some other Mazda models, it does now have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard equipment. Apple CarPlay can be done wirelessly on the top trim levels including Grand Touring and Signature.
The Carbon Edition (pictured), which we previously detailed, comes in a special color combo of polymetal grey exterior with a red interior. It also has black trim and is available only with the optional turbo engine. It sits just below the top Signature model in the lineup and starts at $33,745.
Pricing for the other models starts slightly higher than before, at $25,720 for the base Sport. Turbo models start off with the $30,970 Grand Touring, and all 2.5T cars now have a "Turbo" badge to differentiate them. Mazda says the 2021 6 will arrive at dealerships later this month.

Mazda will no longer offer the 6 mid-size sedan in the U.S. after the 2021 model year. The current third-generation 6 has been around since 2014 and will not be available for 2022, meaning Mazda is the latest automaker—following Ford, Chrysler, and a few others—to exit the popular family-sedan segment.
While this is the end of the road for now, it doesn't necessarily mean that Mazda is done with mid-size sedans forever. Rumors persist that Mazda will launch a new sedan model on the company's new rear-wheel-drive platform that could utilize its new inline-six engines. When asked about the potential for a future rear-wheel-drive Mazda 6, a company spokesperson told C/D, "We cannot share details of future products at this time."
The cancellation announcement does call into question whether this new model will once again utilize the 6 nameplate, as Mazda could introduce a new moniker to reflect the sedan's new mission. If it comes to fruition, we likely won't hear more about this new Mazda sedan for a while longer, as it's expected to arrive sometime in 2022 as a 2023 model.
In the meantime, 2021 Mazda 6 sedans will remain on sale at dealerships until inventory runs out.

Maybe they wanna offer something like the Stinger? Go for it.. make it a Gran Coup hatch too!!
There are enough sedans in the market,,, since they obviously can't steal enough sales from Camry and Accord, try something else.

Mazda is reinventing the brand, moving upmarket with a new rear-wheel-drive platform, a brand new engine architecture with hybridization and inline-sixes, and more luxury than ever before. What's more, evidence is mounting almost daily that the rotary sports car dream will finally become a reality. But one of the products we've been most excited about was the prospect of a new Mazda 6 Sedan that would have rear-wheel drive and come powered by an inline-six. For all intents and purposes, this would be the perfect Japanese rival to the BMW 3 Series, and with the old FWD model dead in the US, the timing seemed perfect. It's a model that was long thought to be in development, but a Mazda executive has poured cold water on the idea, ruling out both a RWD 6 sedan and a two-door coupe version of the same
The news comes via the latest print edition of Britain's Autocar in which Joachim Kunz, Mazda Europe's engineering and development boss, spoke rather frankly on the matter. "It would be very nice… to have the FR [front-engine, rear-driven] concept and six-cylinder engine for a Mazda 6 successor or a large sports coupe," he told the magazine. "We would like to have it, but at this point in time, it's most important to sell SUVs." He expands on the latter statement: "This SUV trend is continuing, and even more for Mazda. It's what's selling best."
This confirmation is a stark reality check that the family sedan is dying as SUVs continue to dominate the market
The Large Architecture (Mazda's new FR architecture) will underpin a slew of SUVs, starting with the recently-revealed CX-60 before being utilized in the CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90. The USA will receive two of these in the form of the two-row CX-70 and three-row CX-90, both of which are being developed with the US market in mind with wider bodies than their European counterparts. These models will likely arrive with the same 322-horsepower powertrain seen in the CX-60, comprising a 2.5-liter inline-four and an electric motor. However, the future inline-six will make it into at least the CX-90, so expect more power. An eight-speed automatic gearbox will feature, but don't expect RWD. These SUVs will be AWD only
