2007 Mazda CX-9 to replace aging MPV
By Ed Hellwig Email

Date posted: 12-05-2005

At first glance we thought this was just another shot of Mazda's upcoming CX-7 crossover. After a little investigation and closer examination of the photos, we think this is actually the slightly larger and more luxurious Mazda CX-9 crossover we've heard rumors about.

Built on a stretched version of the CD3 platform that underpins the Mazda 6 sedan, the CX-9 is expected to have three rows of seats and a price tag closer to $30K. With its seven-passenger capacity, the 2007 CX-9 will replace the MPV in Mazda's lineup.

Power will come from Ford's new 3.5-liter V6. With 250 horsepower and a six-speed transmission, the CX-9 should have solid performance comparable to similar vehicles like the Toyota Highlander and Ford's own 2007 Edge crossover. A slightly larger, more powerful version of this engine may be offered at a later date to position it even further up the price scale. Both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions will be offered when it goes on sale next fall. Expect to see it debut in production form at next year's New York auto show in April.

^ You put it in the right place. Between this and the Edge, I think the edge will be nicer. It'll look like a Fusion-ized suv. I don't like the profile view of this SUV, or the glass. Then again, I'd take the next Aviator over both of them.

Mazda announces 2007 Mazda CX-9 crossover

Mazda announces 2007 Mazda CX-9 crossover

Mazda has announced that it will showcase the new Mazda CX-9 seven-passenger crossover sport-utility vehicle (SUV) at the New York International Auto Show to be held from Wednesday, April 12 to Sunday, April 23, 2006. As a larger sibling to the Mazda CX-7 crossover SUV, unveiled earlier this year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Mazda CX-9 is the second vehicle designed and engineered specifically for the North American market. The seven-passenger Mazda CX-9 is a “clean break from the traditional boxy SUVs crowding the US market,” the company says. Engineered with Mazda’s “Soul of a Sportscar” signature, Mazda CX-9 “deftly blends a sporty driving spirit with seven-passenger SUV practicality.” Mazda CX-9 is powered by a new MZI 3.5L V6 engine driven through a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

Designed and engineered specifically for North America
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) will unveil its all-new 2007 Mazda CX-9 seven-passenger crossover sport-utility vehicle (SUV) at next week's New York International Auto Show. Arriving in Mazda dealerships in early 2007, the CX-9 is designed and engineered specifically for North America. The Mazda CX-9's design sets new standards for style, while incorporating an interior of sophisticated elegance with class-leading space and unmatched versatility. Best of all, CX-9 -- like all Mazdas -- has the Soul of a Sportscar.

Like the Mazda CX-7 presented earlier this year, the CX-9 is a clean break from the traditional boxy SUVs crowding the US market, deftly blending sporty driving spirit with seven-passenger SUV practicality.

"The North American market continues to play a leading role in Mazda Motor Corporation's global future and financial health," emphasizes Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. "The all-new CX-7 and CX-9 were engineered specifically for North America to help us fulfill ambitious goals. The CX-9 has traits only a Mazda SUV could have: strong performance, agile handling, precise steering and superior quality and craftsmanship."

Mazda CX-9 targets young couples and modern families with a focus on family interests, yet haven't lost their desire for high-intensity leisure activities, learning experiences and social interaction. It is also ideal for couples with grown children who pursue an active lifestyle.

Every CX-9 is powered by a new 3.5-liter V6 engine driven through a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Final drive is through either front- or all-wheel drive. Brakes are large ventilated discs on all four wheels.

More detail on specific model content will be available closer to launch, but standard features on all trims include air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, cruise control, and six airbags. To help avoid accidents, all CX-9s are fitted as standard with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Roll Stability Control (RSC) and Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS). An optionally available power-operated lift gate provides one-touch opening and closing access to the cargo hold.

Mazda today debuted the 2007 Mazda CX-9 seven-passenger crossover sport-utility vehicle (SUV) at the New York International Auto Show. Arriving in Mazda dealerships in early 2007, the CX-9 is designed and engineered specifically for North America. The seven-passenger Mazda CX-9 is a “clean break from the traditional boxy SUVs crowding the US market,” the company says. Engineered with Mazda’s “Soul of a Sportscar” signature, Mazda CX-9 “deftly blends a sporty driving spirit with seven-passenger SUV practicality.” The CX-9 is powered by a new 3.5-liter V-6 with a preliminary rating of 250-horsepower. Features include dual-overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, a high compression ratio and electronic throttle control. A six-speed automatic transmission comes as standard equipment.

Drive is either through the front wheels or via Mazda’s advanced Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive system. On all-wheel-drive models, various sensors signal control modules to automatically apportion torque to those wheels most able to provide solid traction. A computer-controlled coupling, connected with the rear differential, automatically adjusts the torque distribution, allowing up to 50-percent of the drive power to be sent to the rear wheels, depending on traction conditions.

Twenty-inch, V-rated, low-profile radial tires (P245/50R-20) are standard equipment on the top Grand Touring model while Sports and Touring editions roll on P245/60R-18 tires. As a result, CX-9 “looks and feels unusually nimble for its size and is the clear class leader for driving pleasure.”

The Mazda CX-9 rides on one of the longest wheelbases in the segment, providing easy access to its three-row seating. There’s ample room for adults in every position and sufficient cargo space to accommodate modern American families. Under the sleek exterior is an interior that will impress demanding customers with its space, utility, versatility, and premium features.

To ease accommodations for all drivers, the driver’s seat and steering column move quickly and easily over a long range of adjustment. The 60-40 split second row not only carries three in comfort, it also offers approximately five-inches of fore-and-aft slide travel and a reclining backrest. In the 50-50-split third row, the seating position and leg room are both class-leading in numbers and real comfort. Entry to the third row is easy, with nearly 26 inches of access space between the folded second-row seat and the C-pillar. Even with the third row occupied, the CX-9 provides 17.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity, eclipsing many large sedan trunks. Both second- and third-row seats fold flat to allow additional storage all the way up to the back of the front seats.

The Mazda CX-9’s safety features are highlighted by an advanced Roll Stability Control (RSC) system that uses both body-roll rate and wheel speed sensors to determine when corrective action is necessary. A momentary torque reduction, combined with an automatic brake application, assists in restoring the CX-9 to an even keel.

Four-wheel disc ventilated brakes include an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) to prevent lockup during emergency use. When excessive wheel slippage is detected, a Traction Control System (TCS) automatically reduces driveline torque to help restore traction. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) reduces driveline torque and automatically applies one or more brakes to minimize under- or over-steer during emergency maneuvers.

Additional protection is provided by sensor-activated side-curtain airbags which extend from the first to the third row. These inflatable restraints deploy in the event of a lateral collision or a rollover to reduce the likelihood of injury and limb or head ejection. Inflation is maintained for approximately six seconds for maximum effectiveness, although the only way these systems work properly is when used in combination with seatbelts. Pretensioner devices automatically remove slack from the belt system immediately after a moderate or greater frontal collision and load limiters are incorporated to provide some give as the occupant moves forward. The CX-9’s front headrests incorporate new design features which are designed primarily to reduce neck injuries during rear impacts.

CX-9 is offered in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring.

More detail on specific model content will be available closer to launch, but standard features on all trims include air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, cruise control, and six airbags. To help avoid accidents, all CX-9s are fitted as standard with DSC, RSC and ABS with brakeforce distribution. An optionally available power-operated lift gate provides one-touch opening and closing access to the cargo hold.

Features available in models and packages include leather interior trim, power adjustment for front seats, high intensity discharge headlamps with automatic-on, rain-sensing wipers, mirror-mounted turn indicators and driver’s-seat memory.

Press Release

2016 Mazda CX-9 Priced from $31,520 MSRP[1], Elevates Midsize, Three-Row Crossover Experience

- Class-Leading EPA-Estimated Fuel Economy, Elegant, Upscale Interior and Spirited Handling Dynamics Make CX-9 a Standout -

IRVINE, Calif., March 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has today released pricing and packaging information for its all-new 2016 Mazda CX-9 midsize, three-row crossover SUV. Offering a premium experience, fun-to-drive handling dynamics and bold KODO—Soul of Motion design, CX-9 represents a compelling offering in its class with a starting MSRP from $31,520.

2016 Mazda CX-9 Priced from $31,520 MSRP, Elevates Midsize, Three-Row Crossover Experience

"With the 2016 CX-9, we have lofty expectations, raising the bar with a quieter, smoother ride; a quicker, more responsive powertrain; and numerous other improvements," said Robert Davis, senior vice president, U.S. Operations, MNAO. "CX-9 is our flagship and portends a future of innovative technologies and amenities that we believe will further elevate our vehicles in their respective classes."

In Sport trim, CX-9 comes standard with LED headlights and taillights—similar to Mazda's 2016 MX-5 Miata roadster—as well as fabric seating surfaces, an electronic parking brake, 18-inch wheels, rear backup camera, trailer stability assist, MAZDA CONNECTTM infotainment with Commander control and a seven-inch color display. Optionally available is the Sport Package, which adds a power driver's seat, heated front seats and heated door mirrors.

CX-9 Touring adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, HomeLink garage door openers, black- or sand-colored leather seating surfaces, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry System, a power liftgate, power front seats, and an eight-inch MAZDA CONNECTTM touchscreen display. Additionally, customers can opt for the Touring Premium Package, which further includes automatic on/off headlights, LED fog lights, navigation, a premium 12-speaker BOSE® audio system, rain-sensing wipers, rear backup sensors, second-row retractable sunshades, SiriusXM satellite radio, automatic Smart City Brake Support and a sunroof.

Further heightening the CX-9 lineup is the Grand Touring model, which builds upon the Sport and Touring trim levels with Adaptive Front-lighting System, 20-inch wheels, aluminum interior trim, Mazda's first Active Driving Display that projects instrument and navigation information onto the windshield, high-beam control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Smart Brake Support, roof rails and memory settings on the driver's seat.

Finally, CX-9 Signature helms the top of the lineup, coming standard with Mazda's predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive—a system that uses 27 sensors, measuring conditions more than 200 times per second to determine how to allocate power to each wheel as to minimize ever feeling the wheels slip.

CX-9 Signature adorns its interior with Auburn-colored Nappa leather, rosewood supplied by Japanese guitar-maker Fujigen, LED signature accent grille lighting and LED accent lighting around the automatic shifter.

All models come powered by Mazda's new turbocharged SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine, which generates a punchy 310 lb-ft of torque from just 2,000 rpm on either 87- or 93-octane gasoline. It also produces 250 horsepower on 93-octane gasoline (227 horsepower on 87-octane) and nets class-leading2 EPA-estimated fuel-economy ratings on either gasoline grade—22 mpg city/28 mpg highway/25 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive configuration.

That engine is paired with a standard SKYACTIV-DRIVE six-speed automatic and is available in front-wheel drive or i-ACTIV all-wheel drive.

"Part of our focus during development the new CX-9 was on 'effortless transition'—the idea of juggling being a parent with an on-the-go lifestyle and then having a vehicle that can accommodate enjoying a weekend getaway with your significant other," said Davis. "Whether you need the space or just prefer its design and elegance, we believe CX-9 is an exceptional vehicle that will delight many new and returning customers to the Mazda brand."

anxiously been stalking this and cant wait to see it this weekend at the NYC autoshow.

BTW - $40k for a pretty well equipped 3 row car is NOT bad. A similarly equipped RDX is the same price.

A Touring "premium" plus AWD is 40k

well, the americans are funky. They overcharge on the sticker, then put 10% discount on the hood. Not sure who they are fooling.

Needless to say, in this day and age, a non-luxury midsize 2 row suv just breaks $40k with premium upgrades (leather, nav, sunroof). To get a 3 row, 200" long mazda with the same amenities, plus LED headlights, etc. for $40k is a bargain, IMO. This is slightly less than a similarly equipped Sorento, and looks a hell of a lot better, with much better MPGs than the koreans

^ I'm not doubting it at all & think it looks great. Can't wait to see one in person, though I highly doubt it'll steer my wife away from her Flex.

Love the look of the new CX-9. Curious how the turbo 4 manages in this midsize CUV and how well Mazda button down the NVH.

Should be fine. 2.5T with 310 lb/ft at the crank. It's not going to win any stoplight races but should have no problem getting out of its way.

Checked out a couple trims today.

Looks amazing in person. However the cockpit it super cramped given the size of the vehicle. I've had this on the radar for guaranteed purchase new or used down the road. But after sitting in it I have crossed it off the list indefinitely. The center stack is like a foot wide and 4 inches higher than it needs to be. Your knees only have 2 inches of wiggle room on each side. I would take the knee room on par with a Miata or cx3. The cx5 is way roomier. What the hell were they thinking??

Same thing happened to me with the NX. I was all about it until I sat in it. Cockpit style front seats are not good for SUVs!

https://www.carscoops.com/2018/08/20...-starts-32280/

Mazda has readied the CX-9 for the 2019MY by adding more equipment and slightly increasing the MSRP. Set to arrive at select dealers this month and nationwide in September, it starts from $32,280 with FWD, a $150 premium over the base 2018 Mazda CX-9, or $34,080 with AWD.

New for the brand’s flagship SUV are the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which can be ordered from the CX09 Touring trim level and above. As for the base Sport version, it gets standard 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, LED lighting units, 7-inch infotainment system, Bluetooth, three-zone climate control and keyless entry&go. The automatic emergency braking and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard, too.

Paying an extra $1,290 unlocks the Sport Package, with Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers, radar-guided cruise control, heated side mirrors, power driver’s seat and heated front seats.

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 Touring costs at least $35,330 and adds standard automatic headlights, power liftgate, leather-trimmed seating surfaces, 8-inch infotainment, and a host of driving assistance features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, are offered at no extra cost.

Optionally, customers can spec the Touring grade with the Premium Package. It costs $2,390 and brings LED fog lamps, front parking sensors, second-row retractable sunshades, Bose premium sound system, SiriusXM with 3-month trial subscription and power moonroof.

The 2019 CX-9 Grand Touring has an MSRP of $40,840 and gets new equipment such as the ventilated front seats, 360-degree camera system and 7-inch TFT gauge cluster display, alongside the usual 20-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior accents, roof rails, heated steering wheel and more.

The flagship model is called Signature, comes exclusively with AWD and starts from $45,365. Opting for this trim level gets you LED grille accent lighting, new rear exterior badging, special rosewood trim and Auburn Nappa leather inside, and hand-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel.

All CX-9s are powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that makes 250hp (254PS / 187kW) and 310lb-ft (420Nm) of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda introduces the 2022 CX-9 in the U.S. with more features and a standard all-wheel-drive. MSRP prices start from $35,280 for the CX-9 Sport i-Active AWD.
11 photos

Mazda announced the pricing and features of the 2022 CX-9 three-row SUV. While no notable changes are in the technical department, the 2022 CX-9 lures its customers with standard all-wheel-drive, a new Touring Plus model, and a base price that is lower than that of the 2021 CX-9 with front-wheel drive.

The 2022 model is powered by the same Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine delivers 250 HP and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium 93 octane fuel. Fed with lower grade regular 87 octane fuel, this engine delivers 227 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is still adequate for everyday drives.

New for 2022, Mazda is fitting the i-Active all-wheel-drive system across the entire CX-9 range. The system continuously monitors weight distribution and shifts power to the appropriate wheels. In addition, all CX-9 models are equipped with G-Vectoring Control Plus and Off-Road Traction Assist.

Keeping things safe on the road, there is a whole range of i-Activesense safety features, including Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Smart Brake Support with collision warning, Advanced Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian detection, and Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist.

Of course, a 10.25-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is on-board in standard. Unfortunately, Mazda insists on featuring a regular display with no touch support, which is a bummer. Instead, you will have to fiddle with a multifunctional knob, which is not always the most straightforward way to control things on the road.

MSRP prices start from $35,280 for the CX-9 Sport i-Active AWD, which already comes with heated front seats, a remote keyless entry system with push-button start, and three-way automatic climate control, among other things.

Further up the ladder, we have a Touring trim ($37,430) that can be updated with a Touring Premium Package, for $2,080. Next up we have the new Touring Plus version at $41,660 that adds some nice design touches to the already packed Touring trim with the Premium package.

The CX-9 Carbon Edition ($43,580) returns for the 2022 model year as a six-passenger SUV. This is gauged towards the most demanding Mazda customers, so expect a lot of comfort, as well as design features. More flexibility for the interior seating setup is offered by the CX-9 Grand Touring ($44.440), while the top-of-the-range CX-9 Signature ($47,210) brings the Mazda customers to the world of affordable luxury.

Mazda expects the 2022 CX-9 to arrive at the dealerships this winter.

As much as i like its exterior and interior design. i would have a very difficult time spending $40k+ on a big ass Pilot Sized SUV with 227hp. That is the optional engine for a Mazda 3!!!
That is "Almost" the same thing as if Honda put the 1.5T in the Civic/Accord into that big ass Pilot/MDX...

Not to mention 6speed AT? This aint 2004 anymore!!

Mazda needs something significantly more powerful very quickly

The 2022 model is powered by the same Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine delivers 250 HP and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium 93 octane fuel. Fed with lower grade regular 87 octane fuel, this engine delivers 227 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is still adequate for everyday drives.

With Mazda’s sport oriented philosophy, an electric drive instead of ICE would make most sense. Not sure why they are burying their head in sand.

Also, there should be a RWD I6T replacement/sibling in the future.

Then why would a minivan have more power than that? We can make that same argument on every 7 passenger SUVs/Minivans. But most of them have more power.

Not all soccer moms want to drive a slow ass car.

Yeah...and also it comes with the lowest tow rating of any 3 row you can buy. One of the big reasons we didn't even bother looking at one of these, that and it's super cramped on the inside. I'd definitely still want a car that can get out of its own way though.

I drove one, prior to the 2.5T Mazda6 hitting dealer lots & didn't find it to feel underpowered.
IIRC, @Chief F1 Fan has one as well.

I dont see how 227hp is not underpowered for a 4400lb 7 passenger SUV.

the 2.5T in the Mazda 3 is not all that fast to begin with. add another 1000 lbs... I cant imagine...

It's 227hp with regular fuel. It's 250hp with premium fuel.

That is true and so is the fact that not all soccer moms want/need a high HP car.

Let's compare the Mazda to a very popular soccer mom vehicle, the Subaru Outback (they averaged close to 190,000 units per year for the past 5 years before the pandemic and chip shortage problem)

Mazda CX-9

227hp ÷ 4236 lbs (FWD) = 0.0536 power to weight ratio
227hp ÷ 4409 lbs (AWD) = 0.0515
250hp ÷ 4236 lbs (FWD) = 0.0590
250hp ÷ 4409 lbs (AWD) = 0.0567

Subaru Outback

182hp ÷ 3637 lbs (base and premium trims) = 0.0500
182hp ÷ 3730 lbs (Limited trim) = 0.0488
182hp ÷ 3772 lbs (Touring trim) = 0.0483

It's not fast but I can get passes in on 2 lane roads when need be if I'm ready and in Sport mode. I don't care how fast it is, it is economical. That mattered more to me than fast otherwise I would've bought a Durango with a big V8. I love my CX9, you never see them on the road hardly. Every other SUV around is a GMC/Chevy/Ford with a few Palisades/Tellurides thrown in for good measure. This thing is for going back and forth to ski in comfort with lots of gear for 4 people no sweat. If I want fast I can jump in my 650GC, 335i or in 2022, my 911.

It does not need to have high HP... it needs to be in the same realm as its main competitors, or at least reasonable.
Pilot - 280hp
Highlander - 295hp
Pathfinder - 284hp
Atlas - 276hp
CX9 - 250hp with premium. 227 with regular.

With its 2.5L... it really does not take much to boost up to 300hp...

And yet the massively underpowered Subaru Outback outsells the Pilot, Highlander, and Pathfinder.

Outback, actually Subaru in general have their own followings. 2 of my GF's sister have crosstrek.. one even paid 3k over sticker a few months ago... They dont even care to look at other cars.

I was surprised to learn that even the 150hp crosstrek is the best selling car in its segment despite its shitty interior and weak engine.

CX-9 does not have such following.. it is not really selling as it is. It averages about 27k a year in the US. i am not counting 2021 sales as it is not really accurate for everyone.

Highlander 230k a year
Pilot about 140k a year
Even that old as pathfinder averaged about 50-60k a year.

So There is no justification if CX-9 barely sells and still offering less than competitive performance.

And No, Outback does not outsell Highlander... You can add CX9's sales # to outback and Highlander still sold more on average.

Highlander
2017 215,775
2018 244,511
2019 239,437
2020 212,276

outback
2018 178,854
2019 181,178
2020 153,290

I don't see the Outback as a soccer mom car like a CX-9, Pilot, Highlander, Telluride, Ascent, etc are. In any case, the base engine in the Outback is slow AF which is why they've always offered a higher powered version. For the previous gen Outback they had the 3.6L flat six, which is how ours was configured, and for the current gen model they have the 2.5T that's in the Ascent (which is also what we have, the Ascent that is). Both are/were around 260hp.

Subarus, especially the Crosstrek and Outback, sell because of the image they project. It's 100% the reason cars like the Wrangler sell so damn well even though they ride and drive like covered wagons.

Yah i had first hand experience just to see how strong those imagines are when i helped 2 of my gf's sisters get their crosstrek... MY GF has a CX30... i really didnt understand why they would buy Crosstrek over CX30 for their uses (going to work)

It is almost like a cult.

Mazda gave the CX-9 more standard equipment for the 2023 model year and it turns out this was the company’s way to say the big SUV goodbye. In an official press release, the brand announces it will discontinue the CX-9 in the United States after the 2023 MY and will replace it with the 2024 CX-90.

The second generation CX-9 was unveiled during the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show and production started in February 2016. It was launched as a brand-new product based on the Skyactiv platform with a family of new engines, including a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-pot with 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts). The design was inspired by Mazda’s then-new Kodo design philosophy.

The 2023 CX-9 – the final model year for the mid-size crossover – has a starting price of $40,025 with destination and handling taxes included. The Japanese company decided to eliminate the entry-level Sport trim for the model’s final model year on the market, leaving the Touring as the base grade. The engine range included only the aforementioned 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, available exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive.
