Spy Shots: ’05 Maserati Coupe/Spyder
A shot in the styling arm for an Italian semi-exotic.
by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image (2003-10-13
The Italian carmaker Maserati in Modena is preparing a facelift for the company's model range Maserati Coupe and Spyder.
The photos are showing two prototypes during tests in Modena. As can be seen, the cars will have a new front end, which is still taped for disguise, a chrome air vent on the side, new aluminum wheels and mild changes of the interior. The facelifted Maseratis are expected to be released next year.

Maserati's new generation - - Source: Autocar
Maserati is planning a radical shake-up of its Coupé/Spyder twins for the next generation, due in 2006, with the arrival of a folding hard-top and more powerful V8 engines. In place of the old Spyder’s rag-top comes a folding steel roof that brings the cabriolet into line with the successful Mercedes SL and Lexus SC430.
The roof is visible beneath the heavy disguise in our exclusive photos. But the adoption of an all-seasons roof for the convertible hasn’t stopped the Italians from developing a direct replacement for the fixed-head coupé, too.
Both models will share the same body forward of the windscreen, but will have different seating arrangements. The Spyder will remain a two-seater, while the Coupé continues its role as a serious two-plus-two, with improved accommodation for four average-sized adults.
By building both on the same (much longer) wheelbase, Maserati has found space for the folding metal roof and storage room behind the front seats on the Spyder to meet customer expectations. On the Coupé, the same area is devoted to the rear seats.
Maserati originally planned to launch the new models, styled by Italdesign-Giugiaro, in early 2005. However, the arrival of in-house designer Frank Stephenson in July 2002 led to a review and, ultimately, the rejection of the Giugiaro proposals as too conservative and derivative of the existing models. Instead Pininfarina, then finishing the Quattroporte, was given the task, delaying the project by around 18 months.
Both cars are built on the same shortened Quattroporte platform with a 4.5-litre, 450bhp-plus V8 mounted behind the front axle, with a rear transaxle. The saloon’s double wishbone suspension with adaptive damping has been tweaked for more agile handling in the new sports cars.
Before the new models are unveiled in 2006, Maserati plans to launch facelifts of the current Spyder and Coupé at the Paris show in September.
To bring the new models into line with the Quattroporte, there are sheet-metal changes and they inherit essentially the same transmission software, planned to coincide with the Quattroporte’s launch in the USA.

SL-style roof for Maserati Spyder - - Source: Autocar
Maserati is building a Mercedes SL rival, complete with folding metal roof. The Italian brand is replacing its Coupé/Spyder twins with two more distinct models each with different wheelbases: this drop-top two-seater is the shorter of the two.
The Quattroporte saloon will form the basis of the new models. The Spyder will use the shortest version of the new platform, and the Coupé will slot between its drop-top sibling and the longer Quattroporte.
The Spyder should be launched in mid-2006, with the Coupé a few months earlier, although they were due to arrive in early 2005. The original Italdesign-Giugiaro styling was dumped as too conservative; the switch to a new Pininfarina design knocked the project back by 18 months.
The Spyder will be a strict two-seater with stowage space behind the seats, while the Coupé version should have a lot more rear legroom than the current model, with Maserati proclaiming the car to be a full four-seater instead of the current 2+2.
Exact engine details are still scarce, although it will run a V8 larger than the Ferrari F430’s 4.3-litre unit, pumping out between 430-450bhp. The Quattroporte’s double-wishbone suspension with adaptive damping will be tweaked to give the car a more sporting slant.

Maserati CC takes shape - - Pictures: Dion M. Bosch - - Source: Autoexpress
These are the best pictures yet of the next Maserati Coupé. Codenamed LM139, the car was caught by our spy snappers leaving sister company Ferrari's Maranello factory in Italy.
It's just possible to make out the firm's trademark oval grille - as seen on the Quattroporte saloon - beneath the heavy disguise. But the real interest lies at the rear; engineers have cleverly hidden the all-new folding metal roof mechanism, a company first. The new model could employ a flip-over design such as that on Ferrari's Superamerica, or a conventional CC set-up.
The 4.2-litre V8 car could also provide the base for an all-new entry-level Ferrari. There are rumours of a front-engined two-seater, badged the Dino. It would be priced around £90,000, well below the F430's £118,000.

GT coupe: Maserati is expected to show the reskinned GT coupe in March at the Geneva motor show. It will be slightly longer and wider than its predecessor.
Under the hood will be a Ferrari-assembled 5.0-liter V-8, estimated at 470 hp.
Spyder: The convertible with sheet metal changes will go on sale this year with the same 5.0-liter V-8 powering the GT. The car is expected to feature a retractable hardtop, developed by Pininfarina.

If they were smart, they would offer an automatic tranny in the new cars......as an alternative to their manual and or cambiocorsa system.
I don't see what the big fucking deal is.
News flash Maserati........you're not Ferrari.
Want to see better sales figures in North America?
Offer an automatic in the Quattroporte (which is rumored) and new GT coupe and vert.

Spy Shots: 2008 Maserati GT Coupe - - Source: The Car Connection
Is this the new Maserati "Mistral?" Rumors say that Maserati may use one of their old names for their new upcoming Coupe. The current names, Coupe and Spyder, do not really give the cars a true identity like the evocative names from the Sixties and Seventies.
The new Maserati GT/Mistral will come as a coupe and as a two-seater Spyder with a retractable steel top. Its engine is based on the Ferrari-built 4.2-liter V-8, as used in the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. The new GT's engine will displace 4.5 liters and will deliver about 500 hp, instead of 450 hp as in the Alfa.
The new car will have a double-wishbone suspension with the Skyhook adaptive damping system and also the Cambiocorsa clutchless gearbox mounted in the rear. Another source is talking about a completely new six-speed gearbox with paddle shifters from ZF, but also of a traditional manual gearbox with a clutch.
The design will be a mixture of modern and classic Maserati, as shown in a computer illustration our spies have prepared.
The new Maserati is expected to make its debut at the Geneva motor show in 2007.

Props to whoever "wrapped" that car. Looks like a Z4 coupe in the back.

But, it seems like it; there's no noticeable hump on the back from that angle...

^ These aren't official pics, they're just a rendering by so-called "insiders" who have seen the real thing.

Maserati GranTurismo
Autoblog- Looks like the new car intro embargo-breaking will continue, this time overseas. A couple of weeks before the car is set to debut officially at next month's Geneva Motor Show, here are a few images of Maserati's new GT Coupe. This Pininfarina-styled coupe takes the Quattroporte's styling in a much bolder direction.
The current Coupes have failed to enthuse as much as hoped, although their performance is stellar. As we told you a few days ago, the car should be quite a mover. MotorAuthority is reporting an anticipated (and amazing for a front-engine coupe) 49/51 weight distribution. Rumored to be powered by an upgraded 400 hp 4.2-liter V8, performance should again match the car's promise. As evidenced by the tail lettering, the full GranTurismo name will be used on the new GT. Expect cars on dealer lots by Summer.
And there are rumors of the new GranSport model as well. Featuring an all-new 450 hp 4.7-liter V8 from Alfa Romeo's 8C Competizione, it should better match up against the M6/XKR/DB9 competition. A new Spyder and possibly a Coupe-Convertible with a retractable hardtop should follow some time next year. And of course, this is also the platform that the upcoming entry-level Dino might share when it shows up late this year. That car is still unofficial, but word has it that this baby Ferrari will sell for around 175 large and might not be a Ferrari at all (no Prancing Horse logos, just like the original Dino), just in case there's any backlash. Three slightly larger pics in the gallery.
