Next-generation Lotus Esprit to feature Lexus-sourced V10?
While it remains unclear if the Lexus LF-A is still on the production track, the supercar’s 4.8L V10 could see the light of day in an upcoming Lotus, a new report finds. Lotus has been using Toyota-sourced engines for several years now, with the British sports car firm now eyeing the company’s top offering.
According to the UK’s Evo, Lotus’ upcoming Esprit flagship could use a version of Lexus’ V10. The 4.8L engine would feature at least 500 horsepower in the Esprit and offer a four-cylinder-esque 8,500 rpm redline.
With a 500 horsepower V10 mounted mid-ship, the Lotus Espirit – which is slated to hit the market in 2012 – would have more than enough power to take on the Lamborghini Gallardo and V10-powered Audi R8, not to mention several other European supercars.
However, the Lexus-sourced V10 won’t be the only powerplant available in the next Esprit. Lotus is also planning a mid-level model – featuring the 417 horsepower V8 from the Lexus IS-F – and an entry-level model with a direct-injection V6 belting out 300 horsepower.
Lotus is also rumored to be readying a hybrid version of the Esprit, with Toyota undoubtedly behind that vehicle’s drivetrain.

Needs more engine choices.

Report: Lotus gives production go-ahead to Esprit supercar
Following a lengthy decision process, Lotus has reportedly green lighted a replacement to the company’s famed Esprit model. The Esprit went out of production in 2004 but could be back on the roads early next decade.
A replacement for the Esprit has been rumored for several months now, but a downtrodden global economy prevented the car from moving from the drawing board to production. However, with the economic outlook improving, Lotus has finally given the production nod to the Esprit, according to Autocar.
Set to slot above the Evora in the Lotus lineup, a Lotus insider described the next Esprit as an “essential brand image builder” and a “high-status purchase”. Expect a hefty price premium over the Evora, with the six-figure range not out of the question for the Esprit.
No technical details about the next-generation Esprit were revealed, but it is believed that the Lotus supercar could use a version of the 4.8L V10 recently launched in the Lexus LFA. Lotus and Toyota have been engine partners for several years, with all current Lotus products powered by Toyota powerplants.

Lotus Esprit concept
Lotus is ready to make a big impact at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. It brought five concept vehicles to the show (more on the other four in short order), and one in particular has us salivating. Lotus plans to revive the much-loved Esprit for the 2013 model year. Before we see a production version of that car, the automaker is showcasing its Lotus Esprit Concept.
Taking cues from the old Esprit, the Esprit Concept plunks its engine amidship, though instead of honoring the turbocharged four-cylinders that powered the originals, the concept makes do with a meaty supercharged 5.0-liter V8. That V8 will look familiar to fans of the Lexus IS-F. The two-seater will produce 620 horsepower, accelerate from 0-60 in under 3.5 seconds and then blast onward to a 205-mile-per-hour top speed. The plan is to bring the production version to market in the spring of 2013 with a price tag around $175,000.
In addition to the massive, and massively exciting ,V8 power, the Lotus Esprit will also be offered with KERS as an option. KERS, or Kinetic Energy Recovery System, is a system used by Formula 1 cars to recover heat energy generated during braking. The energy is stored until the driver wants a powerful boost and with a push of a button propels the car with more force than two bottles of NOS... the big ones.
