Lotus: Esprit News

LOTUS AIMS HIGH WITH ESPRIT FOR 2006

Lotus is working at top speed to design and develop a secret new £75,000 supercar to replace the 25-year-old Esprit in two years’ time. The Norfolk-based manufacturer recently invited Autocar up to its headquarters; as well as allowing us lap their test track, as you can see in the video section, they revealed their plans for the next five years.

Pictured above is an official Lotus drawing and above and in our gallery, enhanced by computer design, the new Esprit – a mid-engined two-door coupé with compact styling and dimensions, sophisticated aerodynamics, ultra-agile handling and a top speed close to 200mph – is being engineered to suit all the major car markets of the world.

Lotus aims to offer markedly better performance and value for money than established opponents like the Porsche 911, Ferrari 360 and Lamborghini Gallardo. The two-seat supercar’s launch is probably being planned for Geneva 2006, because the original production Esprit made its debut there in 1975.

Another new Hethel supercar will be launched about a year later, in 2007, to fill the price gap between the Elise and Esprit. The car is likely to be a two-plus-two front-engined coupé priced at around £50,000, quite different in mechanical layout to the others, but sharing a remarkable number of its chassis components and running gear with them.

This new three-tier product line-up shows for the first time how Lotus plans to fulfil the forecast made last year by the company’s deputy chairman, Victor Kiam, to develop Hethel as a 10,000-a-year sports car manufacturing business.

Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA) allows models as disparate as a front-engined four-seater and a mid-engined two-seater to share high-investment chassis parts, leading to a dramatic cut in development and manufacturing costs. The process is so flexible, say Lotus engineers, that it will eventually be adopted for all three Lotus models: the £25,000 transverse mid-engined roadster (the Elise replacement); a £50,000 front-engined two-plus-two coupé; and a £75,000, 200mph mid-engined 21st century Esprit.

Two years from launch, the team was reluctant to go into too much detail about the new supercar. Autocar’s own deductions about the new mid-engined supercar and its future are that it will probably not use the Esprit name. The construction method will be so different and the level of design sophistication so much greater than the old car’s, that the two would have little in common.

It will use a longitudinally mounted engine, probably a forced-induction V8, mounted behind the occupants’ heads, possibly supplied by Toyota. Lotus may, however, eventually build its own engine for the top two models, whose volume could reach 2000-3000 a year.

The car’s 1300kg weight and 1900mm width targets will make it a very agile car. Lotus is already admitting its dimensions will probably allow a return to racing for the quickest versions.

M5's engine could power next Esprit - - Source: Autocar

The next Lotus Esprit is tipped to use one of Autocar’s favourite engines of recent years: BMW’s firecracker V8 from the recently departed M5 saloon (right).

Senior-placed sources have confirmed that Hethel is considering the 4.9-litre lump from the outgoing E39 5-series. Lotus had previously been linked with Toyota, following the deal to supply the Celica engine for the latest Elise 111R.

In BMW’s application, the V8 developed 400bhp and 369lb ft of torque. Lotus is considering a forced induction system to raise outputs further and has proven experience from turbocharging the previous Esprit.

Following the classic supercar formula, the V8 will be mounted longitudinally amidships in the Esprit’s extruded aluminium chassis, driving the rear wheels. The car’s modern, wedgy shape was first revealed in our scoop on 3 February.

The current Esprit ceased production this spring and its successor – tipped to carry a different name – will be launched in 2006. Priced at around £75,000, it will rival supercars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, Ferrari 360 Modena and Lamborghini Gallardo.

That's depressing, in a sense.

Not that a BMW M5 engine with FI is a bad thing, but there was something special about the Lotus powerplant. Maybe this is Lotus' new plan for the new century -- using engines from other manufactuers and concentrating on the frame/suspension.

Yeap. Lotus is in bad financial state even now. It takes a ton of money in R&D for new engines.

BMW engineering the engine is very interesting but sharing a BMW engine sort of takes away from both cars.

Production of the next-generation Lotus Esprit is set ot move overseas, possibly to Malaysia, in a cost-cutting move aimed at improving profit at the British sports car maker

The new Esprit is pencilled in for launch in 2007/8, and revealed here in Lotus' own design sketches (not the Esprit moniker on the rear pillar). It's an all-alloy mid-engined design using Lotus' VVA- versatile vehicle architecture – that allows front and mid-engined designs to be built using the same structural building blocks. And in a shock move, sources say that it could use the AMG-sourced V8 from the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

Several sources report that Lotus is looking at overseas production and the plan appears to be an open secret among the workforce at Lotus' Hethel HQ in Norfolk.

'The Esprit would be the focus of the decision.' said an insider familiar with the project, 'but I think it boils down to a question of whether you harm your brand by moving production overseas.'

Today's Elise is not being considered for overseas production, according to our source. 'You would expect us to go with a new car first,' he said.

Although Lotus won't confirm its plans, in a statement the company admitted to considering 'additional production sites. 'Lotus will continue to manufacture cars and components at its headquarters in Hethel, and has not ruled out opening additional manufacturing facilities elsewhere.'

Malaysia is understood to be the favoured option because that's the home of Lotus' parent company Proton. And costs are lower than in the UK.

But shifting production of the new £75,000 Esprit – set to be one of the jewels in the crown of Britain's sports car industry – overseas would be a huge blow to the UK car industry as a whole.

News of the plan will also be a bitter blow to Lotus's long-suffering workforce. At the end of this year production of the Vauxhall VX220 will cease and new projects such as the Esprit offered hope to the 400-strong workforce that Hethel would be kept busy.

In 2003, Lotus management predicted a rosy future with production of 10,000 cars a year, split between three different models – the Elise, Esprit and a front-engined 2+2 coupe positioned between the two. Lotus says that this strategy is still current.

The key to this potential is VVA, which would enable several cars to be developed from the same architecture and so spread costs over a large production run.

In the new Esprit, the engine is likely to be an in-line mounted V8 with forced-induction. The target weight is a competitive 1300kg and racing is a major consideration in designing cooling and aerodynamics. It's also said to have a sophisticated launch control and stability system.

Meanwhile, sources say that engineering prototypes of the new Esprit have been seen at Hethel in recent days. Observers say that a car is being tested alongside a McLaren SLR and that two share a very similar engine note, fuelling the speculation about the use of the AMG V8.

Drop the SLR engine in the Elise. Then we'll talk.

They can remove 2 cylinders and tune it down to around 450hp if they want to reduce weight. thx.

450hp, ~2000 lbs.... ridiculous.

Car News briefs - - Source: Autoweek

Lotus named a new CEO and confirmed the Lotus Esprit replacement goes on sale in spring 2008. Lotus veteran Mike Kimberley, who took over as interim chief executive May 11 (News, May 22), announced the Esprit plans and named Bob Braner as chairman of Lotus Cars USA. Braner was previously boss of Lamborghini in the United States when he worked with Kimberley.

The flagship Esprit continues with a mid-mounted engine, possibly from BMW, and a bonded-aluminum chassis. Lotus hopes to sell up to 2500 Esprits per year.

Spy Shots: ’08 Lotus Esprit - - by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image - - Source: The Car Connection

The British sports car maker Lotus - owned byMalaysia's Proton - is developing a new mid-engined Lotus Esprit, due for launch in 2007.

These photos show a first mule in high-speed testing at the Nürburgring. It has wider fenders and a big rear wing than the current car. More important is what will be underneath: the next Esprit gets a 32-valve, 4.8-liter V-8 engine from BMW delivering 367 hp. The engine will be surrounded by a newly developed extruded aluminum chassis and an all-around independent suspension. The supercar's top speed is estimated at around 180 mph.

U.S. sales for this new Esprit have priority; Lotus will build between 1000 and 2000 units in the company's home base in Hethel in Great Britain.

These photos include a computer-drawn artist's impression of how the new Esprit might look upon its release.
