At Lincoln, the Battle Between New Product and Your Grandfather’s Town Car Continues
Didn't Cadillac go through these transitional pains as well a couple of decades ago?

Probably because the Continental has more road presence. And it doesn't hurt that Lincoln has sold almost as many Continental's in the 10 months since it went on sale in Sept. 2016 (11,507 sold) as Acura has sold RLX's in the 52 months since it went on sale in March 2013 (12,694 sold).

That'll do it.

Okay, so Lincoln is, for real, bringing suicide doors back to the fancy but unfortunately slow-selling Continental sedan. Just not very many of them, and those that do get snatched up by buyers are destined to become instant collector’s items.
Lincoln announced this morning that in celebration of the Continental’s 80th birthday, it’s putting out a limited run of 80 special edition models with the iconic center-opening doors that were first introduced on the 1961 Continental.
This is corporate America, so of course they can’t call them “suicide doors.” Thus, this car is the Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition.
In addition to the doors, this Continental sports a six-inch longer wheelbase, a pass-through rear seat console with a stowable tray table and Lincoln Black Label personalization. It’ll be super nice, in other words. And power stays the same: 400 horses from a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6.
Pricing hasn’t been officially announced but The Detroit Free Press says they’ll retail for at least $100,000 each.
My take? I think it’s nice, and I hope I get to see one eventually, and not just at an auto show. It’s definitely a bummer that Lincoln’s only making 80 of these, as it’s probably the Continental that should have come out in the first place. But hey, when was the last time you saw a major, mainstream automaker put out such an unusual limited-edition car? I wish more car companies would do stuff like this.

Retro-styling, suicide doors, etc. notwithstanding, the 2019 will never compare to the 1962 ....

Ford confirmed today that the Lincoln Continental will be discontinued for North America after the 2020 model year. The news certainly isn't surprising given the Continental's meager sales figures, lukewarm critical reception and the fact that the Navigator has resoundingly entrenched itself as the brand's true modern flagship.
"The name will go back into the vault," Lincoln spokesperson Angie Kozleski told the Detroit Free Press. "It has a long and rich history. But production for this vehicle will be ending at the end of this year."
In an official statement, the brand said the decision was due to the continued decline of full-size premium sedans in the United States.
The Continental is built in Flat Rock, Mich., and dates back to 2017 when Lincoln resurrected the nameplate after a 15-year hiatus. The car itself technically replaced the unloved MKS in Lincoln's lineup, and although based on a well-received concept car, the actual production model failed to live up to the rather grand style statement that had been promised. The interior in particular was a letdown. Lincoln sold 6,586 Continentals in 2019; likely many of those were fleet sales.
Nevertheless, it can be argued that this Continental triggered Lincoln's rebirth. It was named something, for starters, as the Nautilus, Aviator and Corsair would eventually follow, signaling the end to the unloved and confusing MK nomenclature. And although it didn't live up to its concept, Lincoln at least learned from the episode and didn't repeat the mistake with Navigator or Aviator. They came as promised.
Though it's dead in the U.S., the Continental will live on for 2021 in China, where its sales are in decline but not by as much. And although it'll likely be remembered as a footnote in the long history of cars named Lincoln Continental, and with few fans in its corner, at least it reaches the end of the line having left a mark. Cue the Traveling Wilburys.

Wasn't even aware this was still a new retail option anymore. Can't even recall the last time I saw one.

It's just a case of the right car coming out at the wrong time.
Lincoln has really turned it around but these days sedans sales are in the gutter as everyone wants crossovers and trucks and big SUVs. Not too far off MPG with easier to get into and bigger room inside.
And Lincoln's prior image/brand as old granny car doesn't help...no matter how hard Matthew McConaghey tries...
