Press release...

Lexus will debut the 2008 Lexus SC 430 Pebble Beach Edition retractable hardtop convertible to commemorate its on-going partnership with Pebble Beach Company. With a limited production of 360 vehicles, the fifth special-edition Lexus SC will be unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Lexus Fashion Preview on Aug. 17.

The unique exterior design of the SC 430 is complemented by an elegant exterior/interior color combination that will be exclusive to the Pebble Beach edition SC. This special SC will feature a Smoky Granite Mica exterior paint combined with an exclusive two-tone Camel and Ecru leather trim interior and Espresso Bird-eye maple wood trim. Additional styling cues unique to the Pebble Beach SC include special-edition brushed chrome badging on the front fenders and center console and an Ecru Pebble Beach logo embroidered on Camel carpeted floor mats. The Pebble Beach SC will also feature White illuminated scuff plates, a sleek rear spoiler and aggressive 18-inch six-spoke chrome wheels equipped on all-season or summer run-flat tires.

In addition to its elegant styling, the Lexus SC 430 hardtop convertible benefits from its ability to hide the roof within the confines of its trunk in a mere 25 seconds, while still maintaining enough room for luggage. All without latches, catches, snaps or covers. And when the top is up, it defies traditional convertible logic by remaining solid, secure and weatherproof.

The rear-wheel drive SC 430 is powered by a 288-horsepower, DOHC, 4.3-liter V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). The aggressive V8 is mated to a six-speed sequential-shift ECT-i transmission to achieve a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 149 mph. In addition to its impressive performance, the SC is certified as an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle II.

The SC features a number of technologies designed to enhance driver visibility including an Adaptive Front lighting System headlights, which help better illuminate a turn as the driver steers into it. The SC also includes daytime running lights, fog lamps and projector High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights.

Dynamic handling is accomplished with standard features that include an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, traction control (TRAC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

Every SC 430 comes standard-quipped with a Mark Levinson® Premium Sound System. This extraordinary system has been configured to self-optimize performance for top-up or top-down driving. Designed by one of the audio field's legendary innovative brands, the SC 430's system uses a seven-channel DSP 240-watt amplifier and nine strategically located speakers to turn the SCs interior into a private concert hall. System equalization automatically adjusts when the roof is lowered to compensate for the changed acoustics and ambient noise levels, and it returns to its original levels when the roof is raised.

The 2008 Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition will be available for purchase in late August.

So basically this new edition is just a color combo & interior accent package that's available? Or am I missing something? I'm sure they'll charge 5k more for it for no reason.
I like the color and the interior sounds like it would be nice.

I drove the SC 430 in the Taste of Lexus event and was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't buy it, but it was a much more fun drive than I expected. They just should've saved the leather and just made it a roadster because the rear seats are useless.

Buy a pre-owned one, the car has been around for 100 years now....I'm sure you could find a really clean example somewhere.

einsatz....The PB Edition has been around for awhile, always an exterior color, wheel, interior package...nothing more.

This is why Lexus keeps a high resale value. They don't change their models every 3 years. Wouldn't you like to buy a car and know that the newer version won't be out for 7 to 10 years?

i would assume that will reduce the sale towards the end of the period
i mean.. you wouldn't buy a car that's been out for 7 to 10 years unless it's extremely well built cars... which does not apply to SC

IL Insider: Toyota Cancels Next-Generation Lexus SC

Date posted: 07-11-2008

TOKYO — Toyota has canceled the next-generation Lexus SC coupe/convertible and may shelve the planned replacement for the Toyota Avalon sedan, Inside Line has learned.

The SC has consistently been a slow seller for the Lexus brand, which is getting a new performance flagship, the LF-A supercar, in 2009. In the first six months, Lexus sold only 1,230 SC 430s, down more than 40 percent from a year ago.

The 2008 SC 430 is priced at $67,120. It is fitted with a 288-horsepower 4.3-liter V8 that is rated by the EPA at 16 mpg in city driving and 23 on the highway.

Toyota had been developing a successor to the SC, based on the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the LF-A. Originally slated for production in early 2009, the next-generation SC was pushed back to mid-2011 and now has been canceled, according to Toyota insiders.

With development of the next-generation 2012 Camry well underway, Toyota also is studying whether to cancel the planned replacement for the Camry-based Avalon, which currently is slated to go into production in Kentucky in early 2010.

In its place, Toyota may opt to produce a long-wheelbase Camry for such markets as North America and the Middle East. The redesigned Camry currently is slated to begin production in mid-2011.

What this means to you: High fuel prices continue to take their toll on larger, thirstier cars, even those from well-respected Japanese brands. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

Yeah... the market probably wouldn't have been what it was for that car back when it came out...
I bet you they come out with something small, sporty and expensive based on the LF-A that's either a plug-in hybrid or something else.

I would love to get one of the 08-09 SC with a nice discount. Sell that car for 50K now and it's a steal.

5-speed manual SC300 > SC430

Never did like the SC430 much anyway. I like the lines of the roof, but in the end its way too plain and like its been said, girly looking.

Good riddance. What's way more interesting is that the Avalon is potentially on the chopping block. Toyota has enlarged the bloated Camry to a size that easily meets the original Avalon's dimensions, so I guess the subject of whether to continue with a next gen car was sure to come up within the company. I think a long wheelbase version of the Camry is a bad idea, though.

Post End of the Road

The Lexus SC has had a long run since hitting the market in 1991, but it's coming to an end this July. To mark the occasion, Lexus has unveiled a special-edition SC430 dubbed "The Eternal Jewel".

Spawned from the minds at Toyota's Calty Design Research Center based in Newport Beach, California, the Lexus SC has seen only two major revisions, and the latest is expected to be the last, according to the latest reports. The Eternal Jewel edition released for Japan appears to confirm the end is near.

Produced in a limited run of 200 units, the car features a choice of interior and exterior color schemes with contrast roof colors, leather upholstery and wood-grain trim. Unique badging and a serial number plate in the center console also mark The Eternal Jewel as unique.

The question of what will replace the SC coupe is the obvious next question. Slow sales and stagnant design have plagued the current model, so the question of whether it will be replaced at all remains open. None of Lexus's recent concepts can be considered true replacements. The development of the Lexus LF-Ch Concept does presage a performance-oriented two-door hatchback that might find a home within the brand's production lineup, but it hardly seems targeted at the same buyer as the hard-top convertible SC coupe. Perhaps that's the point.

saw that coming. although, the timing is terrible now that the LFA is in place. so the LFA halos sportiness for what now? just the new variations of the IS?

perhaps one day they will eventually come out with a grander vert above the IS vert

Unhappy End ofthe Road

We've been hearing the reports and drawing our conclusions for some time now, but Lexus has just made it official. The SC 430 luxury hardtop convertible will be no more after July of this year. Having soldiered on largely unchanged for nearly a decade (save for a few special edition models), the second-generation SC's withdrawal from the market is long overdue.

Demand for the SC430 has been steady declining the latter half of the last decade. With the highwater mark set at 14,462 vehicles in 2002, 2009 saw just under 1000 SC430s sold, with 720 of them sold in the U.S. In this final year of production, Lexus will produce approximately 300 cars.

With 288 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque on tap from its 4.3-liter V-8 engine, the SC430 was no slouch, capable of hustling from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 149 mph. Still, the SC430 wasn't exempt from the need for constant updating to stay fresh - something the special Pebble Beach Edition vehicles couldn't accomplish on their own.

Those already missing the SC430 may not have much longer to wait until a reported all-new next-generation SC debuts in 2014. Said to be dubbed the SC 600h, the new car is slated to feature a 5.0-liter V-8 matched to a hybrid electric system. Stay tuned for more details.

Good. Took long enough.

That aside I'd like to see something more in the vein of the original SC models.

GS Coupe and convertible, based on the new GS that comes in about a year or so. Aim for the 6-Series in dynamics but price it to compete with the E-Class Coupe/Vert.

Question Hybrid

As you may know already Lexus confirmed the fact that it will end the production of the SC430 luxury hardtop convertible in July.

The model was not quite a success and one reason could be that it has mostly been unchanged except for some special edition models, for almost a decade. The demand for the Lexus SC430 has steadily declined since 2002, when Lexus sold 14,462 vehicles. Back in 2009, less than 1,000 SC430s were sold, with 720 of them sold in the US. The vehicle was powered by a 4.3-liter V8 capable to deliver 288hp and 317 pound-feet of torque, enough to push the car from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and to an electronically limited top speed of 149 mph. Now, we just found out from Japan’s Best Car magazine that Lexus is currently working on a hybrid successor of the Lexus SC430, despite the poor sales of the model. Sources confirmed the fact that the new car will receive a V6 engine paired with 2 electric motors which will deliver a total output of over 300 hp. Also, the car is expected to deliver a fuel economy of over 50 mpg.

According to this NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/06/au...s/06AUDIO.html along with the demise of the SC430 came the last car to have a factory cassette deck.
