Drove the LS 460L
This past weekend I attended the Taste of Lexus Event in the DC area. Had a chance to drive the LS460L, BMW 750 and the MB S550.
Here is how I ranked the cars:
Looks:
1. MB
2. Lexus
3. BMW ( BMW now looks dated next to the MB & Lexus)
Luxury:
1. Lexus
2. MB
3. BMW
All around Performance:
1. Lexus (surprised the hell out of me)
2. BMW
3. MB
Please NOTE that this is purely subjective, and I am NOT a big fan of Lexus (give me an S8 any day of the week). I had a chance to drive each car and the BMW gives you better road feel through the steering wheel (few if any manufacture has matched BMW in this area). The BMW had the highest cornering limits and was neutral. The Lexus under- steers when pushed to its limit, but held its own. The MB will over steer when pushed hard (I would not drive the MB near its limits scary). The Lexus falls right between the BMW and MB in the handling area. All were impressive in the braking area. Lexus out accelerates both the BMW and the MB. Lexus went after BMW with the new LS it is by no means a Japanese version of a Cadillac or a Lincoln. The LS’s lines are still conservative but I think a nice set of wheels will compliment the car well. If I were in the market for a luxury car to be chauffeured around in the LS 460L would be in my garage. If I were spending $62K or higher on a car it would not be any of these cars, I need something with two doors and fast enough to land me in jail for trying to break the land speed record.

I think its optional because the optional mats are rubber when stock offers high quality carpet. I can see carpet attracting most buyers cause it looks great when clean and new, but for those who know better the option of rubber mats up front and in the trunk make more sense for when it rains/snows/ or melts.

Lexus LS v Mercedes S-Class
Luxury cars
They’re two of the world’s most advanced cars, but which has the edge...

December 2006
Cambridge University’s Trinity College is one of the oldest seats of learning in the world. Yet even though it can trace its origins all the way back to 1546, when it was originally founded by King Henry VIII, the institution has managed to keep pace with new ideas.
In fact, with its own world-class business park (which we used as the backdrop for our main picture), Trinity is right at the cutting edge of modern science and technology. And in that respect, the all-new Lexus LS460 has a great deal in common with it. The Japanese company’s top-of-the-range model is now in its fourth generation, and can boast eight automotive world firsts. It’s a technological tour de force, and if ever a car could claim to be intelligent, this is it.
Lexus arrived on these shores in 1989, and UK sales have grown from a meagre 671 in 1991 to more than 12,000 a year today. Yet although the launch of the LS is big news, no car in the sector is better, or has more experience, than our current favourite: the eighth-generation Mercedes S-Class. It’s the model Lexus has to beat.
VERDICT
If you’re in the market for the ultimate luxury car, both the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS are likely to be on your shortlist. No other models come close to their quality, technology, equipment, comfort and refinement – not even the Bentley Flying Spur or Rolls-Royce Phantom.
But in concentrating so hard on these areas, Lexus has missed a critical trick – to make the occupants feel good. The LS460 is highly impressive and has incredible engineering, but it lacks personality, coming across as clinical and bland. The Merc is every bit as talented and rides better, yet while it doesn’t have the charisma of the best British luxury cars, it’s more engaging to own and live with than the Lexus. As a result, it wins comfortably here.

I'm not even sure if Nissan is really in 3rd place. I would say that Hyundai and Kia are catching up with Nissan and gaining momentum on Honda. Sad, hugh?

That was uncalled for...
Wow, that's incredible...
9.3L/100km is exactly what my Grand Prix is getting right now, not bad at all for a big V8 in an enormous car. That hybrid system must be mucho $$.

Lexus might be making good use of the tree hugging economic slump by introducing a base V6 to its flagship LS range. Sources cited by Paul Tan suggest the baby LS, if the rumors are infact true, will draw upon the 2GR-FSE 3.5 liter V6 engine incorporating Toyota’s D4-S twin injection technology. The engine is said to produce 377Nm of torque, putting it in line with the F01/F02 BMW 740i.
The Lexus LS currently makes use of a 4.6L and 5.0L V8 in the LS460 and LS600h respectively. The V6 LS would help Lexus push for even greater market share among “green” consumers. [PaulTan via AutoBlog]

Interesting. That could be a good thing, and I'd hope Acura does the same, since I still think they'll have a hard time selling a V8 only flagship for $70K.

I agree about having more tech than Bentley Flying Spur or Rolls-Royce Phantom. Those cars are like Rolexes of the car world as opposed to the Lexus/M-B which are like Tag watches.
That mileage for the Lexus is truly amazing for such a massive car.

I played around with a LS460L at school and that thing is butter smooth all around. Lots of cool gadgets, unfortunately I didn't get to drive it beyond the parking lot so I can't comment on the driving experience. But its such a plush and comfortable car, everything is so fluid... its in the details with that car. But I can't imagine it would be very fun to drive, as is typical with other Lexuses. Compared to previous MBs, I imagine I'd like the S-Class more also.... too bad I've never driven any of the newer ones.

More info about the V6 via Worldcarfans...
Malaysian car journo Paul Tan is reporting that Lexus is planning on introducing a Lexus LS V6. Any new engine option could come when the LS gets a facelift, possibly next year. The current Lexus LS saw an introduction back in 2007. Historically, Lexus has done facelifts on their LS range every three to four years.
Now in its fourth generation, the LS 460 and 600h both come with V8 engines. The LS 460 features a 380 horsepower (342 hp in some markets) 4.6-liter unit with an eight-speed automatic. On its own, the 5.0-liter V8 on the 600h produces 389 hp and up to 383 ft-lb of torque. When the hybrid's electric motor is factored in, the car gets use of 438 hp.
With car companies introducing lower-powered, less-expensive versions of their vehicles to fit changing consumer tastes, a Lexus LS 350 could get the same engine previously seen on the Lexus GS 350 in the U.S. and Japan. The 3.5-liter V6 generates 311 hp and 278 ft-lb of torque, similar to the BMW 740i.

i rarely see LS' that arent hybrids. although they always have drivers in them. so the cars are most likely a purchase decision of the fleet, not the rider. thats NYC for ya... probably walk past half a dozen hybrids a day, and they are always parked outside financial bldgs with drivers sleeping inside.

I'd rock a V6 LS.

Recall
TOKYO (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing to recall 11,500 Lexus vehicles worldwide for problems related to steering.
The company plans to recall 7,000 vehicles overseas, including 3,800 in the U.S., and 4,500 units in Japan, said Mieko Iwasaki, a spokeswoman for the carmaker.
Toyota is recalling four Lexus models, the LS 460, LS 460 L, LS 600h, and LS 600h L.
The cars were sold in the United States, Europe and China and in Japan. In Japan, customers have complained about wheels not returning to original positions fast enough after making turns, Iwasaki said. The problem is both mechanical and software- related, she said.
Separately, Toyota said last month it will recall the Lexus GX 460 sport-utility vehicle that Consumer Reports magazine rated a “safety risk” because the model can roll over in certain driving conditions.
About 13,000 GX 460s were repaired, including 9,400 in the U.S. and the rest in countries including Russia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Canada, according to the automaker.

Do the Japanese know that they need to manually turn the wheel back or do they just ride out the turn?
If they don't know they need to manually turn the wheel back it would explain a lot about the their family members driving experiences here in the states.
