interesting to hear responses here.
personally i'm not a fan but i know this will be a big success.
theres a huge eco friendly market out there who can afford better than a prius but drive one anyway or are looking for something a little more upscale.
half my professors who easily make 100k a year are driving prius's.
i think i'm going to convince my parents to get one of these to replace their aging 03 i4 accord sedan.

I think the design is outside the box and it'll definitely appeal to the average Lexus customer (middle aged women).

No, it actually looks pretty common. I'm sure that the materials we're looking at are very good, the the design, color choices, and lack of wood/alum/chrome makes this car look decidedly plain. If the car had any badge besides Lexus (and especially an American badge), everyone would notice the very weird design and a sea of gray plastic covering the center console and dash.

This interior will be the worst Lexus interior (design and quality wise) ever. The center console was taken straight from the Nissan Quest and the interior plastics will probably be just as bad. "Ecological Plastics"? Funny how Lexus didn't mention anything about QUALITY regarding this material. Meaning it will be just as bad as the recycled-newspaper based material that is being used in the Yaris.
This thing goes head-to-head with the Acura CSX.
The sad part of this all is that Lexus actually DID put some effort into it. It's not just badge engineered like the LX570 or RX350. This is their example of what a dedicated Lexus Hybrid should look like. Unfortunately, I can't see anybody truly really liking this car, unless your name is 1SICKLEX.

I would rather get the Honda Insight if I had to get a hybrid.... reported to get 60+ mpg by a blog!
Now if only Acura could make one, sans fugly ass guillotine grill.

Are you talking about vtec lol? The CR-Z is still coming based on Honda's year end statement. An Acura version would be a good replacement for the RSX also. High end high tech etc.

How about you swallow this Corolla/Lexus before you get a hard-on for an Acura CR-Z. Acura has shown no interest in replacing the RSX. The whole point of discontinuing the RSX was to exit that end of the market. You don't discontinue a good selling car just for the hell of it.

In general, . The front end reminds me of the Focus actually with a 9-3ish rear.....which is not a complement.

While that is what many of us would like, remember that lots of people who buy hybrids want to stand out to other drivers, to show off their environmentalism and progressive driving habits.

I drive a Subata.

It will sell ALOT. That's for sure. And that's what matters the most to any business out there.

I should add more.....
Regardless of its controversial looks, again, this car will sell. The main idea and intention behind this car seem very promising at this point. The timing of launching this vehicle should be perfect as well. Today, the whole go-green-movement has been well-established throughout most of business industries. (Hybrid vehicles for the automotive industry, obviously) Consumers just love it.
In addition, Lexus already has a huge basis of VERY loyal customers and has established enough brand resonance to capitalize on. It's kinda like Apple, imo. They can build pretty much anything and sell them well.
Correct me, if i'm wrong. I'd like to learn.

They should have based it on the wagon version and sold it as a mini-CUV (HX 250h?) as it's a lot less awkward looking.
The interior looks like it was taken from the original Prius with a bit of wood and leather added. The new Prius looks cheaper on the inside. I think Lexus dealers got upset at Toyota for selling $30k Priuses and asked Toyota to make the new Prius cheaper while making a new dedicated model for Lexus to capture the folks who will pay top dollar for a hybrid economy car.
I hope Honda doesn't decide to do the same thing. Of all the cynical, brand-destroying things they could do to Acura...

Well, the HS is hitting the showrooms now. Out of curiosity, I went to lexus.com and built one.
They want $48k for an HS250h premium with "technology package and additional options."
I can't wrap my head around this car. It has a lot of technology, yes, but it's insanely expensive for something that looks like a last gen Corolla and only gets 35 mpg. Not to mention the interior is sparse, to say the least. Disappointing.

Also cue the lack of success for the Honda Civic and Accord hybrids. Although Honda's hybrid's are not really true hybrids like Toyota's (electric motor assisted gas motors).

I'm the Firestarter
1) folding rear seats
2) higher milage
I also happen to think the Prius looks better, especially the new one.
This Lexus hybrid has cheap materials and design for a simple reason: keep costs down. It's supposed to be a luxury Prius, and because of the costs of the hybrid system they had to cut corners somewhere.

Lexus Recalls Hybrid Over Risk Of Pinto-Like Explosion
Yow...

We've exclusively obtained this document detailing the plan to voluntarily recall all 17,000 2010 Lexus HS250hs following NHTSA testing showing excessive fuel leakage after a standard rear-end collision.
The document seen here is the Noncompliance Information Report filed by Lexus with NHTSA. It details the substantial difference between what Lexus found in its own testing and what NHSTA's tests returned. The voluntary recall places a stop sale on all dealer vehicles and advises consumers to call with their concerns. What it doesn't do is lay out a fix for the problem, which is similar to the fuel spillage issue Ford faced with the Pinto in the mid-1970s.
