Autocar

Kia’s Frankfurt motor show star is this dramatic rear-drive saloon. The currently unnamed model will be the first in a series of new concepts that Kia will use to explore new market segments and prove its capabilities of building style-led models above its current range of traditional hatchbacks, saloons and crossovers.

Official details of the four-door concept are scarce, but Autocar understands it be based on sister firm Hyundai’s Genesis saloon, with a powerful V8 petrol engine featuring under the bonnet.

The concept, believed to have been designed in Kia’s Frankfurt design studio, provides a striking message about Kia’s future expansion plans and will provide the blueprint for the firm’s new design direction under chief designer Peter Schreyer.

“I believe this car is a strong statement from Kia,” says Schreyer, formerly of Audi. “We are ready to fast forward to an all new chapter.”

The muscular concept, still partially hidden from some angles in these early teaser pictures, features a bold, purposeful front-end with Kia’s new familiar ‘Schreyer grille’. It gets a gently sloping roofline, heavily sculpted sides and a sleek design for the rear lights.

Schreyer believes his concept is “roaring with energy and ready for take-off” from all perspectives. The interior, which is barely visible in the pictures, is said by Kia to be “a sophisticated and elegant four-seat cockpit”.

The Korean firm insists the concept is more a statement of intent rather than a preview of a new model in a German-dominated market segment never before occupied by Kia.

The saloon concept will be followed up by a drop-top version of the Soul aimed at the US market and a small front-drive roadster, based on Cee’d mechanicals. These concepts are expected to be launched at the Detroit and Geneva 2012 motor shows respectively.

“We have made good progress recently,” Kia’s vice chairman and CEO, Hank Lee, told Autocar last month. “But it is now important for us to improve our brand power. Concepts like these will help a lot with that. But we are prepared to take our time. We will test plenty of ideas before we make any decisions about production.”

Other new Kias on display at Frankfurt will be a three-door Picanto and a facelift for the Soul.

Does Kia have a Genesis equivalent? The most obvious thing, having an ex-Audi designer at the helm, is that Kia is trying to come up with an A7 wannabe car. It's obvious they want to platform whore the Genesis into more models.

Looks promising.

I see hints of Aston and Maserati in the design.

And I know it's a concept, but what's up with the wheels???

Actually, the One-77's front air inlet design is very similar to that on the Veloster concept which debuted back in 2007.

The front of this Kia concept is remiscent of the Kia Kee concept which also dates back to the 2007.

The K9 which will debut later this year is slotted btwn the Genesis and Equus and from the looks of it, has a more luxurious interior than the Equus.

If Kia builds this concept, it would be like a "4-door coupe" version of the K9.

Kia: GT Concept news

Press release...

Kia Motors America (KMA) is the fastest growing car company in the U.S.1, and the brand, which has recently undergone a design-led transformation, continued to turn heads today at the Los Angeles Auto Show with the North American introduction of the striking Kia GT concept vehicle during the show. The forward-looking Kia GT concept – originally shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show – signals the company's distinctive new design direction with graceful yet confident styling and is the first rear-wheel-drive concept in Kia's history.

"Over the past three years Kia's design-led transformation has delivered more new products than any other brand, and the first showing of the striking GT concept on U.S. soil provides a glimpse into our future showroom and the continuing role world-class design will play in the development of our vehicles," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "With its rear-wheel-drive platform and powerful engine, the GT concept represents exciting possibilities for Kia as we move forward to the next chapter in brand history."

Sleek and muscular, the Kia GT four-door sports sedan concept was created by Kia's European design team under the watchful eye of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer. The new concept allowed Kia to explore exciting new visual paths, including a unique interpretation of the Kia-family tabbed grille with a carbon-fiber insert to match the front and rear fascias and side sills.

Triangular swept-back headlamps with pronounced outlines flank the grille and transition seamlessly to the sloping hood and up to the wide windshield. The extended hood along with the rear-wheel-drive configuration also allowed for the design team to push the front wheels to the extreme front of the car to increase its sporty design. The swooping angle from windshield to rear window enhances the GT's aerodynamic presence, while vent-like tail lights, powerful rear shoulders and truncated rear end add to the vehicle's hunkered down appearance. Propeller-style rims complete the dynamic look.

The GT's front and rear-hinged back doors open slightly upward to ensure easy ingress and egress, and the spacious cabin provides comfortable seating for four, assisted by the concept's unusually long wheelbase of 112.6 inches and overall length of 184.6 inches. Despite its low stance, an overall height of 54.3 inches allows for plenty of headroom.

The GT is not all looks, however, packing plenty of heat under the hood. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission is a 3.3-liter turbocharged Lambda V6 Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine, allowing the rear-wheel-drive sports sedan to offer a thrilling 395 horsepower and 393.5 pound-feet of torque.

Kia: GT4 Stinger news

From Jalopnik:
"It's not coming soon, it's coming now." That's the official description of the Kia GT4 Stinger concept, which has every appearance of being a Kia version of the Genesis coupe.

It's the Kia GT4 Stinger concept car. As World Car Fans reports, the engine is a 315 horsepower 2.0-liter T-GDI (It stands for Thank God for Direct Injection, FYI) four cylinder. The brakes are two piece cross-drilled Brembos with four-piston calipers. And finally, praise be, there's a six speed manual transmission.

It's basically all you would want of a 2+2 sporty coupe. The styling is clean and modern. The engine is high tech. The power goes to the rear wheels. This is all part of the basic sports coupe formula seen in everything from the Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 to the Vauxhall Prince Henry.

What's interesting is the platform. There's only one way that Kia could develop a 2+2 rear-drive sports car, and that's by reworking the Genesis coupe (here's the next one) by their partner Hyundai. That's what Kia's already done with the Kia K900 and the Hyundai Genesis sedan.

What's also interesting is that Kia appears to have every intention of bringing this car to market very soon. The only question now is when and how much it will cost.

Kia: GT4 Stinger News

Designed to appeal to enthusiasts, Kia's new GT4 Stinger concept that debuted today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit offers a glimpse into what could become a production-bound "affordable" sporty car.

Clearly intended to rival everything from the Scion FR-S/ Subaru BRZ to V6 versions of the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, the GT4 Stinger concept uses a 315 horsepower variant of Kia's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. A close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels. And, befitting its sporting aspirations, those rear wheels are wrapped in P275/30R-20 Pirelli P-Zero tires. The fronts, meanwhile, are narrower 235/35R-20 units.

Bringing things to a halt Brembo Gran Turismo brakes with 15-inch cross-drilled rotors and four-piston calipers.

GT4 rides on a short 103.1-inch wheelbase and measures just 169.7 inches from head to toe. However, it's a wide sports car, stretching 74.4 inches from left to right. Curb weight checks in at a light 2,874 lbs., made possible by weight saving measures including carbon fiber trim, ultra-light door panels and no carpeting (rubber floors are included instead).

The GT4 Stinger's styling was penned under the direction of Kia chief designer Peter Schreyer. A low front grille is surrounded by vertical LED headlamps. The GT4's sheetmetal is sprayed in a unique Ignition Yellow paint scheme, but it boasts satin black rocker panels that hide functional brake cooling ducts.
Inside, the track-oriented GT4 features a flat-bottom steering wheel, red pull straps instead of door handles and no audio system.

Will the GT4 Stinger make production? Not in its current form. The automaker says instead that it offers a "glimpse into Kia's future."

Has a retro style (to use the term loosely) that reminds me of the Ford Maverick / AMC Javelin.

I've got mixed feelings on this, but part of me thinks it's pretty cool.
