Kelley Blue Book: Total Cost of Ownership Awards

Kelley Blue Book, www.kbb.com , the leading provider of new and used vehicle information, today announced its inaugural Total Cost of Ownership Award winners. The all-new 2012 awards honor current model-year vehicles and brands (in both the luxury and non-luxury categories) with the lowest projected ownership costs, based on Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership data for the initial 5-year ownership period.

While depreciation (or loss of value) may be the greatest expense in owning a vehicle, followed by fuel costs, there are other factors that can have a significant impact on a consumer's pocketbook. Available on Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com, Total Cost of Ownership information reveals depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs, and state fees for new models.

Kelley Blue Book's Total Cost of Ownership Awards, like all new- and used-car information provided on kbb.com, were established to help shoppers make more informed car-buying decisions by breaking down typical ownership costs and naming the models with the lowest projected 5-year total.

(2012 model-year vehicle's projected ownership costs are based on the average Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership data for the initial 5-year ownership period).
"Car shoppers should take the time to compare vehicles on their consideration lists to fully understand the financial implications involved with cost of ownership," said Juan Flores, director of vehicle valuation for Kelley Blue Book. "While a vehicle might be less expensive up front, the cost of fuel for that model, insurance and other expenditures could make it the less appealing choice for their wallet in the long run."

Based on Kelley Blue Book's analysis, Kia and Audi are among this year's prestigious brand winners. Kia is the top brand among all manufacturers, while Audi is the top luxury brand, for low average total ownership costs. With a number of successful redesigns, greatly improved quality, superior fuel economy and competitively priced models, Kia sets itself apart from other non-luxury brands. Some of the key models contributing to Kia's success are the Soul, Optima and Sportage. Audi is a stand-out luxury brand because of its low depreciation and superior fuel economy among its lineup. Among the models driving Audi's achievement are the A3, A4 and Q5.

Other notable wins include the Chevrolet Volt, which was neck and neck with the Nissan LEAF. The Volt's slightly lower maintenance and insurance costs gives it the competitive advantage, making it the 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Award winner in the Electric Car category. The Chevrolet Volt has a 5-year ownership cost expected to total $40,629, while the Nissan LEAF's 5-year expected total is $42,089 with all key costs to own a vehicle considered.

In the subcompact car segment, less than $400 separates the top 3 models. The 2012 Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris and Hyundai Accent come in close with their five-year Total Cost of Ownership totals. However, the Nissan Versa comes in No. 1 with the lowest Kelley Blue Book® Fair Purchase Price (the price consumers typically pay a dealer for a new car) among the 3 models. Its low Fair Purchase Price, combined with the best residual value, results in nearly 10% less depreciation than the other vehicles.

With some fierce competition, the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata is the hands-down winner in the Sports Car category, coming in with the lowest expected costs among all ownership factors against its competitors. The MX-5 Miata offers the lowest expected fuel costs with more than $1,000 in savings against the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Chevrolet Camaro. While the model's Fair Purchase Price is nearly that of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, it expects savings of more than $1,500 with its low depreciation over time.

Among luxury vehicles, the 2012 Audi A5 may not have the lowest Fair Purchase Price, but with all major expenditures considered, it offers the best 5-year Total Cost of Ownership by nearly $5,000 compared to the other models in its class. Outstanding residual values also give it the lowest depreciation. In addition, it is the least expensive to insure among all other vehicles in this segment.

The number of hybrid models available to consumers continues to grow, offering more competitive choices. "In regard to Total Cost of Ownership, the top three hybrid models are all Honda vehicles," said Flores. "Between the Honda Insight, CR-Z and Civic Hybrid, the Insight provides the best expected 5-year costs at $32,884 for the initial ownership period. This model offers the lowest Fair Purchase Price, resulting in the lowest depreciation over time."

In addition, although the Jeep Wrangler has a higher purchase price than the Toyota FJ Cruiser and Nissan Xterra, it beats its competition in the Mid-Size Sport Utility category with the lowest expected insurance and maintenance costs, combined with approximately $600 in fuel savings.

Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership is developed using Kelley Blue Book® Residual Values to calculate depreciation costs. Kelley Blue Book calculates total ownership costs for new vehicles by applying sophisticated valuation methodology along with critical financial data from 3rd-party providers.

"**New-car shoppers naturally want to know how much a car will cost upfront; however, sometimes an even more expensive car can actually save you money during the 1st 5 years of ownership," said Dan Ingle, vice president of vehicle valuations for Kelley Blue Book. "Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own information evaluates the other out-of-pocket expenses drivers will incur, which helps consumers choose the vehicle that fits them and their wallets best, helping save money down the road."

Based on analysis of Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own information for 2014 model-year new vehicles, Mazda and Lexus are the prestigious brand winners for the second consecutive year. In addition to a low average Fair Purchase Price and strong residual values across its full model lineup, Mazda is ranked among the lowest in fuel and insurance costs, making it the 2014 5-Year Cost to Own: Best Brand among all automakers. Kelley Blue Book® Fair Purchase Price is the price shoppers typically pay a dealer for a new car, based on actual new-car transactions and adjusted regularly as market conditions change. Some of the models driving Mazda's success include the MAZDA3, MAZDA6 and CX-5. Despite an average Fair Purchase Price higher than several of its competitors, Lexus offers the lowest depreciation cost of any eligible luxury brand, thanks to strong residual values across its full model lineup. Lexus also ranks lowest in repairs and is among the lowest in fuel and insurance costs. Some of the key models contributing to Lexus' stand-out performance include the ES, IS and RX models.

Another notable 5-Year Cost to Own Award win includes the 2014 Buick Encore, which is this year's 5-Year Cost to Own: Luxury Compact SUV/Crossover category winner. The Encore beat out the Acura RDX and BMW X3 in all categories except maintenance and repairs. Encore offers depreciation costs 35.7 percent lower than RDX and an impressive 63.7 percent lower than X3. In addition, this year's 5-Year Cost to Own: Plug-In Vehicle category winner, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV, bests the Chevrolet Volt and Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid in nearly all ownership factors. Spark EV not only offers the lowest state fees, but also the lowest insurance, outperforming Volt by 50.5 percent and is 22.6 percent lower than Accord Plug-In Hybrid.

Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own information is developed using Kelley Blue Book® Residual Values to calculate depreciation costs. 2016

The 2016 model-year brand and category winners of the 5th annual 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, recognizing new vehicles with the lowest projected ownership costs, were announced today by Kelley Blue Book, Kelley Blue Book - New and Used Car Price Values, Expert Car Reviews, the only vehicle valuation and information source trusted and relied upon by both consumers and the automotive industry. These awards are based on Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own data for new cars for the initial 5-year ownership period.

While depreciation (or loss of value) and fuel costs may be the greatest expense incurred in owning a vehicle, there are other factors that can have a significant impact on a consumer's budget. Available on Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com for new models, 5-Year Cost to Own information takes into consideration depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs, and state fees.

Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, like all new- and used-car information provided by KBB.com, exist to help shoppers make more informed new-car buying decisions by breaking down typical ownership cost details and naming the brands and models with the lowest projected five-year total.
Best Luxury Brand: Acura

Luxury brands don't typically like to talk about value, but Acura owners love to. Acura vehicles offer more features for the money than most of their luxury-brand competitors, they're often more fuel-efficient and they enjoy excellent resale values. It all adds up to total ownership costs that can be many thousands less than those of Acura's European competitors, especially. And that money buys a similarly superior dealership experience, which is becoming a bigger and more appealing part of luxury-car ownership. Acura can keep talking about performance, technology and safety, and let this 5-Year Cost to Own Award do all the talking when it comes to value.
"New-car shoppers usually pay a lot of attention to how much a car will cost upfront; however, sometimes an even more expensive car on the front end can actually save you money during the 1st 5 years of ownership by having low total ownership costs," said Dan Ingle, vice president of vehicle valuations, industry solutions and international for Kelley Blue Book. "Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own information evaluates the other out-of-pocket expenses drivers will incur beyond the initial purchase price, which helps consumers choose the vehicle that best fits their needs and their long-term budget, helping save money down the road."

Based on analysis of Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own information for 2016 model-year new vehicles, Hyundai and Acura are the prestigious brand winners. In addition to a low Kelley Blue Book® Fair Purchase Price, fuel, maintenance and repair costs across its full model lineup, Hyundai also has a mid-range depreciation and insurance cost, making it the 2016 5-Year Cost to Own: Best Brand among all automakers. Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price is the price shoppers typically pay a dealer for a new car, based on actual new-car transactions and adjusted regularly as market conditions change. Some of the models driving Hyundai's success include the 2016 Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Tucson and Veloster.

Meanwhile, Acura takes the crown for the 2016 5-Year Cost to Own: Best Luxury Brand, as it currently has the lowest average Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price, depreciation and fuel costs of any luxury brand, and ranks competitively in insurance and maintenance costs. Some Acura models driving the brand's success include the 2016 ILX, MDX, RDX and TLX.

Other notable 5-Year Cost to Own Award winners include the 2016 Chevrolet Impala, which has beat all models in its class since the inception of this accolade in 2012. The Impala continues to best the competition with its low Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price, which results in lower financing and state fees. This model also has a low insurance cost during the first five years of ownership. In addition to the Impala, repeat category winners from last year include the Chevrolet Spark EV, Chevrolet Colorado, Buick Verano, Buick Encore, Buick Enclave, Ford Explorer, Ford Mustang GT, Lexus LS, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Toyota Prius c, Toyota Corolla and Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The all-new Honda HR-V bested longtime former winner Jeep Patriot to take the crown for lowest ownership costs in the hot Compact SUV/Crossover segment, thanks in large part to the HR-V's strong residual values along with its low maintenance and repair costs.

Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own information is developed using Kelley Blue Book® Residual Values to calculate depreciation costs. Kelley Blue Book calculates total ownership costs for new vehicles by applying a sophisticated valuation methodology along with critical financial data from 3rd-party providers.

OK something's not right. If a company tops the 5 year list why are there only 1 car from Subaru and none from Acura on that rather large list?

High variability across brands.

Moral of the story: Don't just look at brand reliability if reliability is high on your priority list. Models are all different.

YeuEmMaiMai 02-16-2017 04:36 PM

Again that does not compute... you would expect a manufacturer rated high in reliability to have models on said list.... that list is borked or their Title is....

There is nothing wrong here, statistically. It's not hard. If every model is in the top 5, even if none are number 1 (The only models shown here), there's a really good chance the brand is best overall.

nist7 02-16-2017 06:58 PM

Interesting observation looking at previous years winners from cursory review:

-In 2012, Kia and Audi wins. Kia has 1 category winner. Audi has Audi has 2 category winners.
-In 2013, Lexus and Mazda wins. Lexus has 1 category winner. Mazda has 0.
-In 2014, Mazda and Lexus wins. Mazda has 0 category winner. Lexus has 2 category winners.
-In 2016, Hyundai and Acura wins. Both has 0 category winners.
-In 2017, Subaru and Acura wins. Both has 0 category winners.

Interesting pattern indeed. But as above poster said, it may be due to many 2nd place finishes...though cursory look at this year's 2nd and 3rd places do not show much Acura models.

KBB's own website has not much other detailed PDF/report other than just a list and some brief descriptions. Would be interesting to get to know more stats behind this.

So just to be clear, Hyundai and Kia, the two companies that started with absolute shit reputations and absolute shit cars, we're both named in the last 5 years? That's what I call dedication to what they do and always striving for better.

Call it it what you want, but back in 2005 both companies were toilet dwellers.

Indeed. ~10 years ago Kia/Hyundai were complete garbage and now their sedans are becoming more attractive by the year.

I'm always up for more competition in the market so that it benefits everyone with better products and competitive prices for the consumers
