Jeep Scrambler scrapped for next year, stretched Wrangler to be offered

By MARY CONNELLY | Automotive News

DETROIT -- The Chrysler group has called off plans to bring out the Jeep Scrambler next year, according to a company source familiar with the project.

Instead, the company will field the 2005 Jeep Unlimited, a stretched version of the Jeep Wrangler, the source says. The model will arrive in showrooms in 2004.It is not clear whether the Scramber project is dead or could arrive later.

The Scrambler is a pickup derivative of the Wrangler.

Dodge says Magnum is a truck; Chrysler 300 gets all-wheel drive

By MARY CONNELLY | Automotive News

DETROIT -- Dodge will classify the 2005 Magnum wagon as a light truck for corporate average fuel economy purposes, says Craig Love, Chrysler group vice president of the premium and activity vehicle product team.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration can object to the company's classification.

The company also said at a press event here on Friday, Nov. 7, that the 2005 Chrysler 300 will be offered with all-wheel drive. The Magnum and the 300 are new rear-drive models due next year.

Previously, the company had only confirmed that the Magnum would be available with awd.

Base models of the 300 will be priced against V-6 versions of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, says Tom Marinelli, vice president of Chrysler brand marketing.

When the 2004 Chrysler Pacifica debuted, the brand aimed for a more upscale audience.

Wow, that's an interesting choice of classification for the Magnum. I'm not sure how they're going to justify it though. I'm also curious how NHTSA has any say in classification. I thought that would be an EPA thing.

Looks like AWD is catching on! That can only be good news for us as consumers (assuming the systems are built correctly).

there is also a report that the concept Jeep Compass is a go, and will come out in '05 or '06 and be called the Scout (as in International Harvester)

2007 Jeep TJ
Big changes to traditional Jeep favourite

More Photos!

Detroit, Michigan - It may look familiar, but just about everything's been changed on the 2007 Jeep TJ, including an all-new frame, exterior and interior design, engine, and safety and convenience features.

"Reengineered and redesigned from the ground up, the all-new 2007 Jeep TJ is the most capable TJ in its 65-year history," said Mike Donoughe, Vice President - Body-on-frame Product Team. "With more ground clearance, better wheel articulation and advanced off-road hardware, Jeep TJ is designed to tackle the toughest off-road obstacles."

Here are the highlights of the redesigned 2007 TJ (Wrangler in the U.S.A.):

A more powerful 3.8-litre pushrod V6 engine with 205 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. of torque replaces the venerable inline 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine. The Jeep TJ comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic transmission.
All-new 100 percent stiffer frame in bending, 5.1 cm longer wheelbase, 8.9 cm wider track, lower spring rates, advanced shock tuning, increased jounce and rebound travel for a more refined ride.
Increased ground clearance, larger wheels and tires, enhanced Dana front and rear solid axles, available next-generation Command-Trac and Rock-Trac transfer cases, new electric axle lockers, and electronic disconnecting front sway bar.
More interior space: 11.7 cm more hip and 13 cm more shoulder room as well as an additional 2.5 cm in rear-seat leg room and 5.1 cms behind the rear seat.
Improved safety: new 16-inch wheels and four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS are standard while stability control and roll-over control systems are optional. Dual-stage front airbags are standard and seat-mounted side airbags are optional.
More features are available such as power windows and door locks, navigation system, 368-watt Alpine stereo with MP3 capability, and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.
Dozens of different door, top and windshield combinations; new three-piece modular hardtop and innovative Sunrider softtop.
Though it's all new, the 2007 TJ will continue to offer solid axles, removable doors, exposed hinges, a fold-down windshield and removable and convertible tops.

In Canada, it will be offered in four models - TJ, TJ X, TJ Sahara and TJ Rubicon. Jeep TJ and Sahara models feature the second-generation Command-Trac part-time, two-speed transfer case, featuring a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. In addition, a Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip during low-traction situations, such as driving over sand, gravel, snow or ice.

The 2007 TJ Rubicon model features an Off-Road Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, as well as electric front- and rear-axle lockers and 32-inch B.F. Goodrich Off-Road tires.

New steering and suspension geometry provides precise ride and handling characteristics, and new sound-deadening techniques reduce cabin noise by more than 20 percent.

Interior volume provides significantly more passenger space, versatility and cargo storage. The new front seats are sculpted and conform to the body, and a driver's seat height adjuster is available. Roomier rear seats comfortably accommodate two adults, and a fold-and-tumble feature allows rear seats to be conveniently stowed for additional storage capacity. 5 more cm of space behind the rear seat nearly doubles the cargo capacity.

A six-speed manual? Amazing. Seems like only a couple years ago it had a 2.3L 4-cyl and 3-spd auto

Jeep touting ruggedness of redesigned Wrangler - - By MARY CONNELLY | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS - - Source: Autoweek

DETROIT -- This fall, Jeep will introduce a redesigned Wrangler with more off-road capability.

As the Jeep brand begins selling car-based SUVs in 2006, the new Wrangler will carry the flag for Jeep's traditionally rugged image.

Jeep is scheduled to unveil the 2007 Wrangler at the Detroit auto show today, Jan. 9. The 2007 model has been redesigned, with a new frame. It has more ground clearance, larger wheels and improved front and rear solid axles, the company says.

Jeep calls it "the most capable Wrangler in its 65-year history."

A new 3.8-liter V-6 engine delivering 205 hp replaces the 4.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine in the current model.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the new model. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional.

The new model has a wheelbase that is 2 inches longer and 5.5 inches wider than its predecessor. That results in more interior space and riding comfort, the company says.

A new three-piece hard-top permits left- and right-front panels to be removed. A soft top also will be offered.

The 2007 Wrangler will be offered in X, Sahara and Rubicon models. Right-hand-drive models will be sold in international markets.

Among the nameplates rumored for the new model? Cherokee.

Looking at these pics, it looks like Jeep showed us a close to production interior a while back in the Jeep Gladiator concept, but I the silver accents seem to have been removed around the air vents, steering wheel, shift knobs, around the gauges, etc which is a shame cause it really did a lot for the look.

With the news of the 4-door wrangler maybe the gladiator pickup will see production also.

Put the diesel in it and I'll buy it. Should be pretty cool with that modular roof.

I could see them keeping the Liberty as a more luxurious mid suv while this would be an offroader. Think they should make the Liberty into a smaller version of the Commander.
