Japan: Toyota Releases Completely Redesigned Harrier SUV
Tokyo (JCNN) - Toyota has released a completely redesigned Harrier SUV. The latest, second-generation Harrier emphasizes maneuverability and safety. Toyota first released the Harrier in 1997, and described the new model then as "a luxury SUV with the performance of a high-class sedan." The latest version includes advanced driving support and safety mechanisms, better functionality, and ultra-low emission technology.
The new Harrier also features a totally new platform, new suspension components, and wider wheels. In addition, the in-touch-with-the-road steering sensation gives the driver better control on the road.
The adaptive front-lighting system improves nighttime visibility by shifting the headlights to the left or right in accordance with vehicle speed and steering angle. Also included is the world's first commercial application of a front and side camera/monitor system. Toyota claims that this is the first precrash safety system to use a "milliwave" safety radar. The system retracts the front seat belts whenever a collision is judged imminent. Nissan holds the patent for the seat-belt retracting technology.
Toyota will release 2,400-cc and 3,000-cc versions overseas beginning this spring. Monthly Japanese and North American sales goals are set at 2,500 and 9,000 units, respectively.
------------
interestingly, I read in another article that Nissan is to license this technology to Toyota and Honda.
