I still think the headlamps and taillamps mess up the design. Then again, maybe they are integral parts of it...

Jag XK Gets $75K Pricetag - - Source: The Car Connection

Just as Jaguar's new XK sports coupe gets ready to roll into showrooms, the automaker is adding a second model to the lineup. The convertible version features a three-layer ragtop that can operate in just 18 seconds. The XK convertible's aluminum chassis and body are not only lighter than the old sports car, but 50 percent stiffer. The automaker intends to bring the coupe to market for $75,500, officials announced on Monday, while the convertible will carry a $6,000 premium. So far, Jaguar claims to have received about 4000 "firm" advance orders for the next-generation XK.

Jaguar: XKR news **S Convertible Revealed (page 2)**

Spy Shots: ’08 Jaguar XKR - - by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image - - Source: The Car Connection

Jaguar launched its new XK at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show-but there's clearly more to come.

These are first photos of the XKR, shown here as a convertible prototype during cold weather testing. The differences from the stock XK are clear: there's an altered front end with big air intakes, air intakes in the hood and four big exhaust pipes at the rear end, along with larger wheel arches and a taller rear spoiler.

With its newly bulging hood, the XKR is taking aim at the BMW M6 and Mercedes SL 55 AMG. Backing up its claim is a supercharged 4.2-ltier V-8 delivering 400 hp.

Both the XKR coupe and convertible are expected to make their public debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall and to be in the showrooms in 2007.

It's all about pwr/weight. The Jag is a lot lighter than those competitors listed.

Never discounted the weight issue....just simply saying it needs more HP. I guess I am surprised that Jaguar did not up the HP for the new model.

Jaguar Launches JaguarWatch on the New XK

The First Pan-European Category 5 accredited Stolen Vehicle Tracking System

Jaguar has secured an industry lead with its new state-of-the-art 'JaguarWatch' Stolen Vehicle Tracking Device, available initially on the new XK, which went on sale on March 16th 2006.

In an era of security conscious motoring, Jaguar's lead in achieving Thatcham Category 5 accreditation for JaguarWatch is also an industry "first" for supplying a pan-European stolen vehicle tracking device.

Statistics show that whilst vehicle-related crime has been falling steadily, it still accounts for about a fifth of all crime. Overall vehicle theft rates have also fallen, but the proportion of cars that have been stolen and not recovered is on the increase.

Cars stolen by opportunist thieves such as joyriders are usually found abandoned, but cars stolen by 'professional' thieves for parts or to sell on, are less likely to be recovered. Latest figures suggest more than 50% of stolen cars are not recovered.*

Category 5 is the latest Thatcham standard, developed by Thatcham in conjunction with the Police and insurers, to combat car crime, particularly key theft which is fast becoming the most common means of car theft in the UK.

Currently, only Category 5 accredited systems meet the stringent requirements of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO)** Policy On Police Response to Security Systems. JaguarWatch also complies with the advice of The Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB). As such a Category 5 system such as JaguarWatch helps the police to respond more immediately to a theft.

JaguarWatch provides an innovative solution to these legislative requirements whilst ensuring that technical integration into the vehicle is fully approved by Jaguar Engineers. JaguarWatch comprises state-of-the-art hardware installed in the vehicle, and a pan-European monitoring and response service. Technical features include remote immobilisation (under Police supervision) and very low quiescent current.

Thatcham's Director of Research, Andrew Miller said: "The fitment of 'JaguarWatch' on the new XK is an excellent endorsement of Thatcham's Category 5 standard. Jaguar are to be applauded as another example of a vehicle manufacturer taking positive steps to help reduce vehicle crime."

Geoff Cousins, Jaguars UK Managing Director continued: “JaguarWatch is a leading security technology that goes hand-in-hand with the advanced sports car that the Jaguar XK is and sits alongside a beautifully crafted luxury interior, aluminium technology and scintillating, dynamic performance. JaguarWatch further underlines Jaguar's commitment to security and technological development on our cars and although the XK only went on sale in March, in the UK alone we currently have over 2,500 advanced orders.”

JaguarWatch is available in two versions:

1. The Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR) version is Thatcham Category 5 approved and A.C.P.O. secured-by-design accredited.

2. The non-ADR version is intended for customers who are looking for a traditional after-theft tracking device and who do not require a complete Category 5 solution. It is identical to the ADR version in all physical respects with the exception of driver recognition (i.e. no driver recognition tags and no driver recognition module within the ECU).

The all-inclusive price of a fitted system is £1,401.75 which includes 3-year subscription for pan-European cover and roaming SIM card (including roaming across UK domestic networks)

JaguarWatch is the only stolen vehicle tracking system approved by Jaguar for fitment to Jaguar Cars. It is available immediately for the new XK, and will be introduced to the remaining Jaguar product line up over the next 2 months.

Recently Jaguar also became the first manufacturer to utilise the Pyrotechnic Deployable Bonnet, fitted on the new XK and another technological first for Jaguar.

2007 Jaguar XK: A Low-Fat Cat

June 4, 2006
Behind the Wheel
2007 Jaguar XK: A Low-Fat Cat
By JERRY GARRETT

IAN CALLUM, who designed the new Jaguar XK, has a framed letter on the wall of his office in England. "Whoops!" the letter begins. "I am SO sorry!"

The apology came from Mr. Callum's younger brother, Moray, who is also an auto designer. (Moray recently became design director for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars in North America, after serving as head of styling for Mazda.)

In 1995, Moray Callum had just started to restyle the Ford Taurus. To add what he considered a sporting touch to the otherwise staid family sedan, he borrowed the elliptical grille opening of some classic Jaguars. He set Ford's blue oval emblem in the middle of it, atop a stripe of chrome.

That decision by Moray, now 48, loomed large when it came time for his brother Ian, who is 51 and Jaguar's director of design, to restyle the British automaker's 10-year-old sporty coupe and convertible.

"Everyone wants to know why the new XK has a 'Taurus nose,' " Ian lamented in an interview. "Done in by my own brother!"

Whatever the geneology of its nose, the new XK has arrived, like the eagerly anticipated scion of fading aristocrats, with the burden of great expectations. The car is expected to do nothing less than pull the revered English automaker out of its doldrums; give its parent, the Ford Motor Company, an overdue return on a very large investment; and put Jaguar back on the short list of great European luxury marques.

The new XK is elegant to behold, but it seems to lack the swagger and rakish charm of progenitors like the XK 120, XK SS, XKE and XJ 220.

The XK's teardrop-shape headlamps and taillights are one departure. "I looked at the old E-Type elliptical headlights and said, 'It's been done,' " the designer said. "Too obvious. Let's do something different."

The coupe's liftback, however, is pure E-Type. The convertible's rear haunches look a bit swollen, but that is because the trunk had to be big enough to hold the retracted softtop and some luggage.

The Jag does not have a retracting hardtop, like rivals from Cadillac, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. "There's more power and presence in having two cars — a convertible and a coupe," Mr. Callum said. "It's not just a choice; it's to challenge which one to buy."

The rear wing seems a little too large — it houses the mandatory center brake light. As a result, the spoiler provides more rear downforce than desired, and can cause the nose to lift at speeds over 130 miles an hour. That, happily, is not an everyday worry.

The hood line is not as low as Mr. Callum would have liked it to be; he is also not fond of the lower air dam, which gives the new XK a shovel-nose look. These touches were mandated by new European rules governing front-end design, intended to reduce injuries to pedestrians. "The dimensions are set by regulations," Mr. Callum said of the front end.

There are "gills," or side vents, behind the front wheels that augment the car's catfish face. These recall Mr. Callum's early career designing cars like the Interceptor for the British automaker Jensen.

And then there is that snout. "I believe the grille will continue to be a signature Jaguar styling cue long after the Taurus is gone," Mr. Callum said emphatically.

The Scottish-born designer said he deliberately sought a controversial look with a bit of "discord — and a sense of edge." If his goal was to do more than recycle well-established Jaguar themes and designs — taking the easy, noncontroversial path — it would seem he has been successful. "I wouldn't dumb the car down, just because it's a Jaguar," he said.

The XK's interior styling is less contentious. The champagne-color convertible that I tested featured a sublime mix of real walnut burl veneer and creamy caramel leather — meeting the traditional expectations of Jaguar shoppers.

The contoured front seats cocoon the driver and passenger, though the tiny rear seats are suitable only for very small children or leprechauns. The driver looks over the long hood like an airline pilot surveying the curvature of the Earth.

The remote keyfob doesn't fit into an ignition switch; it merely needs to be in the car. A starter button lights up the 300-horsepower, 4.2-liter V-8. The restrained rumble of that engine won't disturb the neighbors, but it will warm the long-neglected cockles of an Anglophile's heart.

More powerful XK's are expected to come — with 420 and even 500 horsepower — at six-figure prices. The smooth six-speed ZF automatic transmission — this gearbox is not a choice but a given — is one of this car's finest attributes.

Early drivers have had notably mixed views about the speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering. Some drivers have described it as numb, and others as too heavy. I thought it was nicely weighted.

Curtis Turner, the late stock car driver, used to say the ultimate test of a car's turning prowess was whether it could make a U-turn on a two-lane bridge (presumably, in Turner's experience, with a revenuer in hot pursuit). The XK can come exhilaratingly close to nailing that standard — quite a feat considering its 11-inch-wide tires rated for high speeds. The XK has a turning circle of merely 33.3 feet, compared with 39 feet for the latest Chevrolet Corvette or the Cadillac XLR.

Still, the XK is the least aerodynamic convertible in the over-$50,000 class. The Jag's drag coefficient of 0.36 compares with 0.32 for the BMW 650i, 0.31 for the XLR and 0.29 for both the Mercedes SL and Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet.

Previous XK's have been referred to euphemistically as sporting cars — a backhanded compliment for Jaguars that didn't cut the Grey Poupon in the handling department. This new cat feels light on its paws. It sinks its claws into the pavement and springs eagerly out of the turns.

Its suspension — unequal-length double wishbones, front and rear, plus coil springs — have been more precisely tuned for performance that is closer to a true sports car's. Computers provide four-corner control of pitch, yaw and damping of the Bilstein shock absorbers. The faint of heart will appreciate driver's aids like traction and stability controls; brake force distribution for panic stops; and better antilock brakes.

The newly invigorated ride is also steadied by a wheelbase stretched six inches. While the new XK is virtually the same length as the old XK8, it is 3.7 inches wider and 4.7 inches taller. In its effort to set itself apart from high-prestige German and Japanese cars, Jaguar has developed an aluminum strategy: the XK, like the latest XJ sedan, has an all-aluminum chassis and body. (The Audi A8, built with an aluminum space frame, is the only mainstream competitor that can make a similar claim.)

If the XK feels tightly put together that is because, in fact, it is. Sections of the car are both riveted and joined with high-strength aerospace adhesives, much as modern aircraft are put together. The aluminum construction helped Jaguar cut 263 pounds from the coupe and 375 from the convertible. That's a good 500 or so pounds lighter than the steel-bodied Mercedes SL500 or BMW 650i.

This, in turn, helps the Jaguar to laudable, class-leading fuel economy. In my testing, the convertible averaged 24 m.p.g. over all.

The coupe is, understandably, slightly more taut and quiet than the convertible, although it provides far less hedonistic pleasure. The convertible's semi-rigid canvas-covered top drops and stores in the trunk in 18 seconds. A couple of thin roll-on suitcases might fit in the drop-top's cramped trunk, if they don't get in the way of the folded top or its mechanism.

The coupe's trunk is almost 50 percent larger; optional run-flat tires eliminate the need for a spare, freeing another bit of luggage space.

The XK is the first Jaguar convertible with rollbars that pop up in a rollover.

The convertible has a price premium of about $6,000 over the coupe, which starts at $75,500. The convertible I tested had a sticker of $85,200, including the $665 shipping charge. This represents a price bump of about $6,000 over the discontinued XK8, but the Jaguar is still priced some $14,000 below the Mercedes SL.

Of course, emotion is more likely than pricing to seal a deal in the premium sports class. In that regard, the XK would seem to have an edge; some shoppers are put off by the BMW 650i's styling and complicated iDrive controls. The Mercedes SL may no longer seem so exclusive, given that some 12,000 of them are now sold each year. The Lexus SC 430 is — forgive me for putting this so delicately — rather homely.

True, the XK is far from the most handsome Jaguar ever; that title was retired with the glorious E-Type, the standard for British sports car styling since 1961. And while the new XK doesn't quite have the movie-idol good looks of the recently departed XK8, it is, for my money, the sexiest sports car under $100,000. Even with the proboscis of a Taurus.

INSIDE TRACK: What happens to sex appeal when government regulators get involved.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/au...pagewanted=all

Can you find the Jaguar in these pictures? (That is a 2001 Ford Taurus above and a 2007 XK below.)

Emotion is more likely than pricing to seal a deal in the premium sports class. In that regard, the XK would seem to have an edge.

Supercharged Jaguar XKR to make British International Motor Show debut

Jaguar announced this morning that its new supercharged XKR high-performance coupe will make its world debut next month at the British International Motor Show in London. The automaker is keeping mum on the car's specifics for now, but expect additional information to trickle out as we get closer to its July 18 unveiling. That the big reveal is happening on the company's home turf only adds to the building anticipation and makes it an early favorite to be the star of the show.

What we do know is that the new XKR was designed at Jaguar's Whitley Product Development Centre in Coventry, and will be built at its Castle Bromwich facility in Birmingham. Like it's XK sibling, the XKR should be lighter and faster than the vehicle it's replacing.

As for how it looks, all we've got is a teaser for now, but as soon as we get our hands on more pictures, we'll share them with you.

Anyone else notice that the lines don't meet on the taillights? Typical Ford quality.

I'll still take the DB9 over this anyday.

They look like they line up to me. If you're referring to the bottom, you'll notice that there is a ledge on the right side but none on the left. This creates the illusion that it is not lining up, but in reality, it actually is.

And I believe the DB9 costs a lot more than the XK so it's hard to compare the two directly. I'd say the XKR is probably going to do well for its price.

Jag Unwraps Latest XKR - - Source: The Car Connection

Jaguar's newest enhancement to the XK lineup is the supercharged XKR, due to bow at next month's British international motor show. The unveiling is set for July 18. The new XKR delivers 120 more horsepower than the current car for a total of 420 hp. With the paddle-shifted six-speed transmission lifted from the standard XKs, the XKR will jet to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The convertible model takes 5.0 seconds, Jaguar reports. A stiffer suspension and bigger brakes come along with the R package of badges and grille inserts. The newest, fastest Jag arrives in showrooms by the end of the year, with prices estimated to range from the mid-$80,000 range for the hardtop coupe and more than $90,000 for the convertible.

I still cant seem to really like this car. When I first saw the last gen XK8 i was in shock on how great it was.

This one... i think, meh cool. I really dont care for the non-jaguar-like interior.

I thought the same thing until I rode in one 2 weeks ago. Personally, I think it is much improved over the old XK/XKR.

Jaguar has unveiled its new supercharged sports car – the Jaguar XKR. Building on the excellence of the all-new XK introduced in late 2005, the XKR takes the Jaguar experience to new heights. Like the XK model, the new XKR makes intelligent use of practical, modern technology such as its industry-leading monocoque body structure. In addition, a 420bhp (SAE) supercharged V8 engine and class-leading calibration of its state-of-the-art, six-speed automatic transmission bring it to a level of accessible, real-world performance that makes the XKR the most impressive, everyday, sporting GT in its class.

The XKR's powerful statement of intent is reinforced by enhanced sporting styling cues such as a unique front bumper, aluminum-finish grilles and hood vents. Its unique 19- and 20-inch alloy wheel designs and a quad-exhaust system also add to its overall presence.

"The new supercharged XKR captures perfectly the essence of what makes a Jaguar XK so special," commented Bibiana Boerio, Jaguar Cars managing director. "It is a perfect combination of refined Grand Tourer and serious performance sports car, that delivers a truly rewarding and exhilarating driving experience."

New Jaguar XKR at a glance

* New supercharged Jaguar XK sports car – the XKR, available as a Coupe or Convertible
* All the attractions and attributes of the XK – but amplified in the 'R' to complement the extra power and performance
* 4.2-liter, supercharged V8 engine developing 420bhp and 413 lb-ft (560Nm) of torque
* 0-60mph acceleration in 4.9 seconds and 155mph (electronically limited) top speed
* All-aluminum construction means a lighter, stiffer car, which improves handling and agility. At 3,671lb (1,665kg), the Coupe is 154lb (70kg) lighter than its predecessor, while the 3,781lb (1,715kg) Convertible is 220lb (100kg) lighter than the previous convertible XKR
* Uprated springs and dampers, and recalibrated Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS) system for enhanced ride and handling
* Class-leading six-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted 'paddles' for ultra-quick gear shifts in milliseconds
* Active Exhaust System to ensure cruising speed refinement, but purposeful V8 roar under hard acceleration
* Subtle XKR exterior styling enhancements include a sportier grille and front bumper design, vented hood, unique aluminum-effect side power vents and new wheel designs
* Enhanced interior includes unique aluminum 'weave' design on the fascia (polished burl walnut is optional at no extra cost) and XKR sports seats
* Intuitive controls and driver-focussed technologies are available – including Keyless Entry, Keyless Start, advanced Touchscreen and Active Front Lighting

Driving the new XKR

The new 420bhp (SAE) Jaguar XKR is a sensational car to drive. With 120bhp (SAE) more power than the normally aspirated 4.2-liter XK, the same strong and stiff aluminum body structure that ensures superb ride and handling, and a six-speed automatic transmission with Jaguar Sequential Shift that is regarded as class-leading in terms of gear-change speed as well as refinement, Jaguar's blend of performance and dynamics reaches new heights with the XKR.

"Our aim when engineering the new XKR was to ensure that the car's characteristics remained in balance despite the significant increase in power over the XK," explains Jaguar's chief engineer, Mike Cross. "Working with that as our base, our brief was to create 'XK plus 30%' – the ultimate sports GT for the real world.

"We wanted the performance and dynamism you would expect of an XKR but were careful to retain that exceptional blend of sporting luxury that every Jaguar must have and which was so convincingly demonstrated with the XK. The bottom line is: if you like the XK, you'll absolutely love the new XKR."

The result of that engineering brief is a car that performs in any condition, at any speed. With superb torque at low engine speeds, instant acceleration is always available should you demand it. Similarly, the advanced steering and suspension set-up means the new XKR switches effortlessly from relaxed grand tourer to honed sports car with ease. It is everything the XK is and much more.

Supercharged 4.2-liter engine

The ability to call upon impressive reserves of power and acceleration in an instant is the hallmark of every great Jaguar. The new XKR ensures this by using a remarkable 4.2-liter supercharged AJ-V8 engine. Producing 420bhp (SAE) at 6,250rpm and 413 lb-ft (560Nm) (EEC) of torque at 4,000rpm, it is capable of propelling the Coupe version to 60mph in 4.9 seconds (5.0 seconds for the Convertible) and onto an electronically limited top speed of 155mph (250kph).

The addition of a supercharger and twin air intakes means the new XKR benefits from a 120bhp (SAE) power increase over the normally aspirated 4.2-liter XK with which it shares its engine configuration. Torque, so essential for instant acceleration at any engine speed, also increases significantly – by 36% over the XK, although the overall weight of the XKR is raised by just 154lb (70kg). Consequently the power-to-weight ratio compared to the normally aspirated 4.2-liter XK is an impressive 34% higher.

And in comparison to the previous generation XKR, the new engine produces more power and more torque. Combined with the significantly stiffer and lighter aluminum monocoque body structure of the new XKR, these performance improvements lead to a significant leap in the power-to-weight ratio of 12% over the previous XKR and an equally useful jump of 7.7% in the torque-to-weight ratio. To achieve the equivalent improvements in power and torque-to-weight in the outgoing XKR would have required nearly 50 more horsepower. Consequently, the 0-60mph sprint time of the new XKR Coupe is reduced by 0.3 seconds.

The heart of these significant performance improvements is the XKR's lightweight eight-cylinder engine with an Eaton supercharger. The water-cooled cylinders are arranged in a 90-degree V configuration and the crankshaft is supported by five main bearings. Each of the two cylinder head assemblies incorporates twin camshafts operating four valves per cylinder. One of the reasons for the engine's impressive output is the continuously variable valve timing which helps to deliver a wide spread of torque. The engine uses an Electronic Return-less Fuel System (ERFS) and a three-way catalyst exhaust system.

The increase in power and torque over the outgoing XKR model is down to two significant additions to the engine. The air intake supply to the engine has been significantly enhanced thanks to the use of twin air inlets, and a Variable Inlet Camshaft Timing system is used for the first time on the XKR. By continuously adjusting the timing of the inlet camshaft on both banks of the V8, depending on the engine speed and load, Jaguar's engineers have ensured large improvements in torque, particularly at lower revs.

The system is controlled by the Engine Management System (EMS) which receives engine speed, throttle position and oil temperature data from its sensors. The EMS determines the correct inlet camshaft timing by continuously referring to a digital three-dimensional map developed to provide optimum performance. The EMS then transmits the appropriate signals to two solenoids that control the degree of hydraulic force provided to the valve actuators.

The normally aspirated 4.2-liter XK has been praised for its acoustic qualities, remaining unobtrusive and relaxed at modest speeds but producing an unmistakeable V8 soundtrack when worked hard. On the XKR, the noise from the supercharger threatened to dominate the acoustic character and mask the underlying sound quality. However, through enhancements to the vehicle acoustic pack, the supercharger noise has been reduced by 5dB compared to the previous XKR.

This approach to acoustics allowed the engineers to concentrate on using the exhaust system to deliver the best possible sound quality character. This was accomplished through the use of the XKR's Active Exhaust system which varies the flow of exhaust gases through the main silencer box to ensure that the XKR remains quiet at cruising speeds, but delivers a substantially more purposeful sound quality character under hard acceleration.

Transmission

Jaguar's Sequential Shift uniquely combines all the speed and involvement of a sequential manual gearbox with the comfort and convenience of a full automatic. The system consists of steering-wheel-mounted paddles and a conventional gear selector lever, allowing the driver to switch between three automatic or paddle-operated gearbox modes.

Whereas an automated manual gearbox interrupts the flow of torque during the gearchange – while the clutch is disengaged – the Jaguar's gearbox maintains the flow of torque throughout the shifting process. This results in gearchanges that are not only quick, but also remarkably smooth. Gearshifts are achieved in less than 600 milliseconds, from the point at which the driver operates the shift paddle to the point at which the shift is complete.

In fact, during development, comparison tests between Jaguar Sequential Shift and rival automatic transmissions in the class showed the transmission to be the fastest system of all, changing gear at least 400 milliseconds faster than a standard automatic and 100 milliseconds faster than the best automated manual system.

The three gearbox modes give the driver total flexibility to use the transmission to match whatever driving style he or she chooses. In Drive mode, the gearbox behaves as a conventional automatic, with the software optimized for every day driving conditions providing all the benefits of a best-in-class automatic transmission.

In Sport mode, the gearbox's adaptive software becomes more prevalent, adapting and reacting more dynamically to demanding conditions. This software takes account of the prevailing conditions and driver's inputs and adapts accordingly. For example, it recognizes when the car is negotiating a curve, and holds the gear accordingly; Hill Recognition enables the XKR to choose the ratios to optimize the ascent or descent of a hill; the gearbox's software will also match the engine speed precisely to the engine and road speeds, 'blipping' the throttle during rapid downshifts.

Manual mode is activated by simply operating one of the steering-wheel-mounted paddles, and delivers a state-of-the-art manual gear shift feel from the automatic transmission. Chassis, suspension, and brakes

To ensure optimum ride and handling, the XKR's springs and dampers are uprated compared to the normally aspirated XK. The front spring rate is increased by 38% and the rear spring rate by 24%. Allied to the Servotronic steering system, which has also been tuned both mechanically and electronically to give the steering more weight and even greater response, the suspension ensures confidence-inspiring handling without any loss in refinement and comfort levels.

Because of the inherent strength and stiffness of the chassis, the only significant addition to the XKR's structure is an additional rear suspension brace mounted between the rear damper towers to accommodate the significant increase in rear spring rate. This also allows the Convertible to utilize the same dynamic settings as the Coupe model.

The Computer Active Technology Suspension (a two-stage adaptive damping system that ensures the optimum balance between ride and handling) and new switchable Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control System (Trac DSC) have also been recalibrated to cope with the additional power of the supercharged engine.

As significant to the XKR as the increases in power and torque are the major improvements in strength and weight thanks to its advanced all-aluminum architecture. Unique in the industry as a complete aluminum monocoque body structure, as distinct from an aluminum spaceframe with separate aluminum exterior panels, its properties come from both the way the bodyshell is designed and constructed, and the use of new joining technologies.

In fact, the new XKR's aluminum chassis is significantly lighter and stiffer in both Coupe and Convertible form than the steel model it replaces. The Coupe chassis is over 30 percent stiffer than the previous XK, while the Convertible is over 40 percent stiffer. As a consequence, the XKR accelerates faster than the previous model, while offering high levels of safety, reduced noise and vibration intrusion, and improved ride and handling characteristics thanks to improved suspension dynamics.

In Convertible form, the BIW weight, at just 633lb (287kg), is 19 percent lighter than the previous XKR Convertible.

New, larger ventilated brake discs at the front ensure higher braking performance for the XKR. The front brake disc diameter has increased from 12.8in to 14.0in (326mm to 355mm), and the thickness from 1.2in to 1.3in (30mm to 32mm), which not only improves the braking performance but also the system's resistance to fade. The braking system also includes four-channel ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Hydraulic Brake Assist to increase brake pressure during an emergency stop, and Jaguar's Electronic Park Brake function.

Design

With the much-admired new XK already considered a future design classic, Jaguar's creative team, led by Ian Callum, had a great starting point from which to produce the XKR. The XK range's elegant form draws on the lineage of the original XK and E-Type sports cars, and by blending this unmistakeable Jaguar silhouette with contemporary flair, its exterior forms a stunning blend of elegance, athleticism and definition. The XKR takes now this athletic look one stage further thanks to the addition of:

# New XKR front bumper with color-keyed finish to unique front fog lamp housings
# Aluminum side power vent finish
# Hood vents and unique 'XKR' aluminum finish to upper and lower front mesh grilles
# Aluminum finish to rear signature 'blade' and selected exterior brightwork finishers
# Unique 'Jupiter' design 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 20-inch 'Cremona' XKR wheel available as an option
# Black brake callipers with 'R' logo
# Quad exhaust system and unique lower bumper
# 'R' rear badge

Design Director Ian Callum explains the thinking behind the look of the new XKR:

"We talk at Jaguar of how our new generation of models are 'beautiful, fast cars'. It's a phrase that ideally sums up our brand and can be applied to every car we design. We were extremely proud of the reaction to the new XK when it was unveiled last year – it is as beautiful as you would expect a Jaguar sports car to be. Now, the new XKR has a look that emphasizes the 'fast' aspect of our design statement.

"The 'powerline' that runs from the front wheel through the cabin area and into the car's rear haunches remains, and we have added to that latent feeling of power by adding some strong performance features such as the vents that signify the potent supercharger and the stunning new alloys that fill the wheel arches and give the car real purpose."

The new XK's interior design has been just as highly praised and the XKR's cabin represents arguably the most sophisticated yet driver-focussed environment of any car in its class. The XKR has class-leading ergonomics, user-friendly in-car technology and simple, clear information displays in the instrument panel and main dashboard area.

A unique sports seat design with additional lateral support for both the driver and front seat passenger has been added, with an 'R' badge on the headrests, tachometer, steering wheel and gear selector. The design of the standard aluminum interior veneer is also unique to the XKR, featuring a 'weave' pattern from the Advanced Lightweight Coupe showcar.

XKR customers can also specify the Luxury Sports interior option which features soft-grain leather on the 16-way adjustable seats, instrument panel, door trim and center console.

I like it...a lot actually...
Though, I'm not a fan of the "side power vent", much like I don't care for it on the Range Rover either. I prefer the color-matched side vents much more, but that's just my

Yeah, I agree.........think it would have looked better if there was just a non-mesh type vent instead of the fog lights and mesh insert.

Don't get me wrong though, the car is evil looking.

I like both models, but the coupe is sick.

I love it when people say that-no f@cking sh!t you would buy the AM if you had the money-but news flash, you could buy TWO of the new XK's for the price of one AM.

My father had both a last generation XK8 and the new XK. The new one is light years ahead of the old one. The styling is that much more beautiful, and it is actually a blast to drive-push the sport button, use the wonderfully responsive paddle shifters, and flick it through the corners. Yes, I said "flick," as in flick a little S2k.
The car is amazing for the price. Before my father purchased the XK, we looked at the SL, but all three friends who have them hate them-the top is nothing but rattles, and there are electrical gremlins galore.

With the R version coming out, you can;t really beat the package that you get for the price you pay.

The aluminum doesn't do anything for the interior.

I sat in the XK with the premium leather package (soft grain just about everywhere) and had a walnut interior.

Was very nice actually, I don't know about SL nice.....but nice.

I read somewhere that they're making a XKR-R. Is that just a rumor or has anyone else heard anything about it?
