Intelligent Parking Assist!!! Uh oh...

In case you didn't catch this story:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp..._parking_car_3

Doesn't that take the pleasure of driving more and more away from the motorists? I am not surprised about Toyota doing it (after all, they produce some of the most bland vehicles that isolate the drivers from most road conditions anyway), but the article also mentioned Honda doing it in Japan! Now, Toyota mentioned in the article that it would be coming to America later in the year.... uh oh, what cars would they be? Probably the Avalon, Camry or something along these lines...

I know that Infiniti (or someone else?) offered this "Intelligent" cruise control on some of their new models and the drivers HATED it. Maybe some of the Toyota drivers would have loved that...

I'd rather just have the damn backup camera so I can see how close I am. Considering that it doesn't work in situations where you need to inch in, I don't find it useful at all.

I don't know about you, but I never found parking fun. There are many aspects of driving that aren't fun. If my car could drive my weekday stop-n-go commute, while I manually drove "recreationally" on the weekend in nice weather, I'd go for that.

I second that. If I could sleep in the backseat while my TSX drove me to work, I'd do it. Parking doesn't scare me (though our turning radius sucks) but I don't get any great thrill out of it.

Gilbo, I don't know why we worry about your silly posts, but sometimes we can't help it.

That's the park distance sensor, which indicates how close you are to the car or obstacle behind. You still need to control the car manually, i.e. steer, brake, gas, reverse...

The Prius can parallel park itself (on batteries, no less). It goes something like this:

1. Mark the space by stopping adjacent to the car behind your spot, and then adjacent to the spot itself.

2. Activate the parking system.

3. Go to sleep as the car reverses and turns into the spot on its own.

Well kiteboy, you can't really sleep. You still have to regulate the brake pedal to control the speed of the vehicle. If you're wondering, the system will cancel itself if you suddenly let go of the pedals or if the car exceeds normal parking speeds
