2014 Infiniti Nomenclature

INFINITI ANNOUNCES NEW NAMING STRATEGY
  • Infiniti models from the 2014 model year to carry Q or QX prefix
  • New nomenclature symbolizes new brand direction and the commitment
to Infiniti under the leadership of Johan de Nysschen
  • The use of Q & QX captures the inspiration within the next generation of
Infiniti models, while relating back to Infiniti's roots of the Q45
  • New premium sports sedan to launch at the North American International
Auto Show in January will be first Infiniti to carry new Q badge

HONG KONG, December 18th 2012: Marking another significant step in its plan to further expand its presence in the premium automotive sector, Infiniti today announced details of a new nomenclature strategy to be applied to its complete product range beginning with the 2014 model year. The first model to carry Infiniti's new Q badge will be the Q50, an all-new premium sports sedan to be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013.

The premium automotive brand will see its model range simply prefixed either by Q – for sedans, coupes and convertibles, or QX, for crossover and SUV models. Each model will be further identified by a double digit representing hierarchy within the range. This strategic change reflects Infiniti's desire for clarity and cohesiveness as it embarks on ambitious growth plans, including significant expansion of the Infiniti portfolio.

Commenting on the revised naming philosophy, Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited, said: "Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand. The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework. After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that 'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasizing our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45 – Infiniti's first iconic flagship product in 1989."

Infiniti's new nomenclature strategy will be implemented in logical stages within the existing product range, as 2014 model year variants are introduced. The brand's future plans include a range of next-generation Infiniti models that will carry Q and QX badging from the outset.

ENDS

Interesting. Sounds like Infiniti is taking a page from BMW's playbook.

Can't wait to see what they do to the G.

Infiniti's new naming scheme

This is just going to confuse potential customers.

This new naming scheme is so convoluted. And shouldn't this be in automobile news section?

This sounds horrible. I prefer the different letters and the number denoting the engine size. And going back to its roots? The Q45 was killed off years ago, with the M having been a step below just to become the flagship. Was this confirmed to be in all markets, including the US? I know in like Australia my I30 was noted as a Maxima/Cefiro 30 plus some other weird model designation. And having it like that, to me, makes it sound like buying a G will sound bad, especially as a coupe in this style being regarded higher than the sedan.

Just noticed how it said the next gen G to be badged as a Q50 will be unveiled at NAIAS. And I just looked at Infiniti's Facebook page, and it is just about, if not ALL negative comments about the change

This has Netflix-Qwikster written all over it.

Whoever did the research and evaluations should be fired. The current naming system has been firmly established. Changing it now is dumb, IMO. As dumb as BMW coming up with the 4 series for what was the 3 series coupe.

Will we all adjust and get used to it? Yes. But I feel Infiniti will be taking a step or two back in doing this.

I assume in the not too distant future there'll be a Q40 - and not just a G25 like car (decontended G37). Someone from Audi must be pulling the marketing levers at Infiniti.

This.

And really. Did Infiniti dealers really think the problem with Infiniti models was its naming convention? Carlos, please step in.

Infiniti continuing the downward spiral.

All you had to do was look at how bad it worked out for Acura.

Man, someone from Acura's office needs to send Infiniti a fruit basket for this. No longer will the dropping of the "Legend" name be considered one of the biggest marketing missteps of all time.

Barring some extremely aggressive marketing by Infiniti to get people familiar with these names, it's going to be a nightmare for dealers. What was so wrong with names like G37x? It just made sense, now it's Q50. How do you differentiate engine sizes? How about AWD vs. RWD models?

I guess Infiniti saw Lincoln's naming scheme and said "Yea, that's working out well, let's do that too."

Way to break something that didn't need fixing. I guess they saw BMW's and Acura's convoluted naming schemes and got jealous.

I really don't see what the BFD is. Who cares what they're named? And yes, this is coming to the U.S. according to article on Autoweek.

Wouldn't be surprised if the new owners decided to debadge their new Infinitis after they leave the dealership....Unless they're the arrogant type of douchebag who likes everyone to know "hey look at me, I have a new QXX and you still have an Infiniti with a 'non-Q' badge."

You're right, I mean it's only the models that make the brand. And if people can't remember what models the cars are, that's their problem! You just have to remember that the QX80 was the old QX56, QX70 was the FX, and Q60 was the JX. It can't get any easier for the common car buyer.

You obviously have no experience in marketing.

Yeah but we're car enthusiasts, the average car buyer will have this down pat in no time. Besides, remember how this similar naming scheme worked so well for Volvo?
