Tucson Shows Its Face At Last
By Mat Watson

Once again Auto Express is ahead of the game - and in this week's Auto Express you can see the proof. Nearly six months after we featured spy shots of Hyundai's baby Santa Fe in Issue 761, and a month after we revealed its name in Issue 778, the Korean firm has released their official drawing of its Land Rover Freelander rival and confirmed it will be called Tucson.

Pronounced 'Too-son' and named after the US city in Arizona, the newcomer is expected to arrive next autumn starting from a bargain-basement £12,000. That's £1,500 less than the entry-level Toyota RAV4. Outside, the Hyundai features a large protective front bumper and plastic side cladding, which work together with the roof bars, flared wheelarches and five-spoke alloys to create a chunky look. However, unlike some other mini-SUVs, the Tucson will not be all show and no go.

Based on the Elantra platform, the newcomer is expected to be available in both front and all-wheel-drive formats. The latter will use a modified version of the Santa Fe's drivetrain, which together with the high ground clearance should give good off-road ability. Hyundai UK boss Jim Campbell said: "We're expanding our 4x4 range, and supplementing the existing Santa Fe and rugged Terracan with the Tucson. These cars show that we can produce formidable four-wheel-drive models which are not only tough, but easy to live with, too."

The engine line-up should include 106bhp 1.6-litre and 139bhp 2.0 petrol units, plus a 111bhp 2.0-litre diesel, all of which will be taken from the Elantra. But performance fans will be pleased to learn that the V6 from the Coupé could also be added to the range.

just 10 years ago, hyundai was a crap.. i remember everybody made fun of hyundai. but they came along and worked hard to make better car every year... my dad worked for Kia in korea back 80's and i know how hard they work..

i know hyundai has a long long way to go to catch japanese cars, but gap is getting closer every year. better design, better quality, and better warranty made them one of the fastest growing car company. keep it up hyundai!

That car looks like something from the Ford Guys. Whats crazy is that like chung...said, the brand has come a long way. The tiburon has a little stree cred for it's styling and the Sante fe is not too shabby either. Both Kia and Hyundai have come a long way and i feel the slanted H will be up there with the likes of toyota and honda in a few years. All it will take for them is to build a flagship sports car that is affordable. I think Hyundai would be the shit if thy offered an all wheel drive tibby with more power, or a turbo awd tibby.

i agree with everything you said.. hyundai will be a more complete player if they do make a rear wheel drive tibby coupe.. bring up some power, upgrad interior and make it rear wheel and sell them for less than 25K.. people will be all over that!! also, within few years they will bringing a minivan and luxury sedan equus(under 35K).. way to go hyundai!!

2005 Hyundai Tucson

INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY HYUNDAI

HYUNDAI EXPANDS LINE WITH ALL-NEW TUCSON SUV

Chicago, February 4, 2004 … Continuing to expand its model line in the United States, Hyundai today introduced the Tucson sport utility vehicle at the Chicago Auto Show. The vehicle is the company’s first entry into the small SUV segment. The is smaller than Hyundai’s hot-selling Santa Fe SUV and will go on sale late this summer in the United States.
“The new Hyundai Tucson is a value-packed SUV that will complement the buyer’s active lifestyles,” said Hyundai Motor America’s President and CEO Robert F. Cosmai. “Tucson has all the features buyers have come to expect from Hyundai and it’s covered by America’s Best Warranty, The Hyundai Advantage which includes the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.”
The four-door Tucson is the second Hyundai sport utility vehicle to be named
after a city in the southwestern U.S.

Tucson styling provides a masculine, athletic appearance and delivers lots of utility. As Hyundai’s newest SUV, the Tucson is designed to be a versatile companion to the buyer’s lifestyle and to provide the best value in the market place in equipment, style, image and value.
The Tucson features a spacious, well-configured interior that provides
lots of room and comfort for the driver and passengers and all their cargo. The Tucson also provides a large, versatile and durable cargo area with fold-flat rear seats, and folding front passenger seat. The seat can be folded forward to provide extra storage room or a workspace for the driver. It can also be fully reclined as a seat. The rear mat is removable and exposes a durable, easy-to-clean plastic floor with multiple tie down locations for everyone’s “gear.”
Since January 2003, all Hyundai vehicles manufactured for sale in the U.S. are fitted with side-impact airbags as standard equipment. The Tucson carries on this tradition of safety. The Tucson is equipped with a total of six airbags; driver and passenger front airbags, driver and passenger side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags for both front and rear seat occupants.
Tucson buyers can select from two engines. The base model GL features Hyundai’s proven 2.0-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine fitted with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) matched to a 5-speed manual transmission or available Shiftronic

automatic transmission. Hyundai’s 2.7-liter DOHC V6 is standard on the GLS and LX models and it is matched to the Shiftronic automatic transmission. The 2.7-liter V6 as used in the Tucson is fitted with a variable length, tuned intake system for smoother delivery of power across the entire rev band. Four-wheel-drive is available with either engine.
Tucson uses the state-of-the-art Borg-Warner Electronic InterActive Torque Management four-wheel-drive system that routes up to 99 percent of the available power to the front wheels. As road conditions or torque demand changes, the system automatically diverts up to 50 percent of the available power to the rear wheels. The system monitors throttle position, front wheel angle and slippage.
As surface conditions change, power is automatically routed to the wheels with the best traction. There is also a dashboard-mounted 4WD lock button that allows the driver to manually “lock” the driveline into 4WD for a 50/50 torque split.
Standard features on the Tucson include: four-wheel disc brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, power windows and door locks, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the driver and front seat passenger, side-impact protection (side curtain airbags) for the front seat and rear-seat passengers and remote keyless entry alarm system. Additional standard features include: heated outside rear view mirrors, front windshield de-icer (V6 only), tinted glass, roof rack side rails, rear intermittent wiper,

tire pressure warning system (V6 only), AM/FM/CD stereo system with six speakers and more.
Available features include leather seating surfaces, anti-lock brakes and ABS with traction control. A power sunroof with tilt is also available along with front-seat warmers, fog lamps, remote keyless entry with alarm, AM/FM/Cassette/MP3 with six speakers (standard on GLS), AM/FM/Cassette/CDC with six speakers and woofer (standard on LX), roof rack cross rails and rear privacy glass.
The new Hyundai Tucson is designed to compete with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander. It is expected to be on sale later in 2004 as a 2005 model.
Hyundai Motor America, headquartered in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of Korea. Hyundai cars and sport utility vehicles are distributed in the U.S. by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced by more than 625 dealers nationwide.

I don't like it at all. It looks just plain weird from the front. I'd much rather have the CR-V over this truck

Does this replace the Santa Fe? or what because it does look just like one.

This is so bland. It looks like a station wagon from 1996.

STUNNING

I used to lease a fully loaded Tucson in college. It was a great little car for the $$. I believe that my family will be leasing this come February. Surprisingly, there is very little information on this car considering it will be released any week from now.

Any additional info on this car? Pricing? Power?

there are some dated articles saying 4Q 2009. Not certain if its been pushed back. Pricing for the outgoing gen was 18-25k. I would expect this to be a couple grand more, as the last gen was very basic (i still enjoyed it though).

dont get me started. i open the moonroof more often than i open the drivers side window. when it comes to SUVs, a dual moonroof is as big of a buying factor as the HP number - i enjoy it that much.

It's true: "Stuff White People Like - Sunroofs."...i would probably go stir crazy in a car without one. i even cringe when i see bentleys, astons, etc. without them. cant cope.
