Transmissions have been gaining gears at a rapid clip in recent years, and it remains to be seen when automakers will call it quits on what must surely be a game of diminishing returns.
The point of diminishing returns was reached already once the 6AT has become manistream.

I thought 8-speed was getting stupid already and now 10 speed? I'll check back when we have a 21 speed!

i like the 8 speed in my 460 but although it great on gas for a v8 six would be better for delivering that punch off the line that it lacks...

Becoming to the point where # of gears approaches infinity. Which is a CVT....

I would definitely like to see the reliability on that thing.

Whats the point? The cost, weight and complexity is just pointless. It'll be skipping gears most of the time.

Just design a good CVT.

I feel like there is too much wasted time shifting in my Camry's 6AT. 8 or 10 would make me crazy. 5AT seems like the sweet spot to me.

lets see what they come up with.

ppl said porsche was crazy for developing a 7 speed manual and we ended up with something new AND awesome

then again... this is Hyundai and not Porsche.

I mean with forced-feeding becoming mainstream, which translates into very strong torque figures, the need for more gears, I do not understand. Must be improving gas consumption.

to me this seems more like a marketing gimmick and they forced the engineers to do this.

So now in their adds they can say "we offer the first 10 speed transmission! More is better right!"

A bit overkill, but a way to get the 8 spd AT into lower end models while the Equus and Genesis get the 10 spd.

The 8 spd that Hyundai developed reportedly is less complicated and lighter than the typical 6 spd AT.

Interesting ... but too many gears is like too many chiefs in kitchen.
Way too many on my 24 speed hybrid bike.
I like 6 on my MDX and 8 or more sounds expensive and not needed.

The CVT is still emerging technology.
There are belt and chain designs but they are not soup yet.
Often have computer problems {Ford, Nissan, Porsche, Others}.

I guess for marketing tit-for-tat, Honda should come back with "Hey, we've come up with a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000000,0 00,000,000,000,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000 ,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000000,000 ,000,000,000,000,000,000000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000............. speed transmission.'

Tim, it was public information that she intentionally posted her self and made available on the internet to be seen. That is the whole point of a Linkedn account.

Sorry. That's not how I see what you did. She didn't volunteer that information in this thread. She didn't volunteer that information in this context (AFAIK). It would seem the mods agree with me.

BTW, what is it with you now using my IRL first name? Are you trying to prove a point?

Well, I feel bad for Agnes.

I'm male, didn't graduate from Cal-Irvine and never worked in marketing, but have been to Cape Town (beautiful place).

Btw, already noted this to VTEC Racer previously, but I guess actual FACTS is something he doesn't care about.
