The Avalon is a phat ride, but when it starts topping off at 33k, I would say it should be 1 generation ahead of a XG.

The more I look at the XG, I think they could have done more with the interior and the front fascia of the car... the interior looks sparce, and the fascia of the car looks a bit plain to me.

Meh, still a good bargain choice.

Its aight. I must say its a splendid sucessor to the old model, but I still think the design is kinda off somewhere. The front to me doesnt flow with the rest of the car at all. The overall shape which to me has a Japanese Nissan shape to me(forgot which model specifically, but its not a bad thing) and rear seem quite nice though. The interior is also a lot better. The center stack, just the control area reminds me of the 2000-2005 Toyota Avalon(not a bad thing). And the wrap around cheap wood effect is very reminicent of a Buick(and also not a bad thing). But all in all its still a pretty damn good car. Glad they are still trying to improve on there vehicles. I however prefer the Sonata even though it looks like an Accord, but I can get past that. If I was looking for all out comfort at around 30K, the new Avalon would be on the top of my list. I'll take an Avalon Touring in Black please.

INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY HYUNDAI

A GRACEFUL NEW BEGINNING –
HYUNDAI ROLLS OUT THE AMAZING ALL-NEW AZERA FLAGSHIP SEDAN

New York (March 23, 2005) – Most automakers have a flagship model that represents their best efforts in style, sophistication, safety and performance. Hyundai is in a unique position as their existing flagship sedan, the XG350, is stepping aside to let an all-new sedan take the lead – the elegant 2006 Hyundai Azera.
As Shakespeare said, “What’s in a name?” In this instance, the name – Azera – provides a glimpse of what makes this sedan so special. The word “Azera” is meant to evoke a feeling consistent with Hyundai’s new global brand slogan, Drive your way™. Its construction derives from the phrase: “the era of A to Z.” The name Azera also recalls the French word “azure” – the color of blue skies, an optimistic color that reflects Hyundai's focus on the future.
“The Azera is the third of seven all-new or redesigned Hyundai vehicles to be launched in a 24-month period, completely revamping the Hyundai lineup,” said Robert F. Cosmai, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “Azera will earn distinction for segment-leading standard safety features, refined styling, and content that is generally reserved for higher-priced luxury sedans.”
From the first glimpse of the Azera, it is clear that this is an extraordinary sedan. The graceful lines are aerodynamically efficient, reducing wind noise while still ensuring a spacious cabin. The dramatic roofline and rear quarter set the Azera apart from other sedans in this class. All together, it is a well-balanced design that pays homage to the other Hyundai models in the line-up while also forging new ground.
“The Azera is sleek and modern, which are becoming signature Hyundai design characteristics,” said Cosmai. “The Azera’s well-designed exterior matched with the ergonomic and feature-rich interior really captures the essence of the new generation of Hyundai vehicles.”
On the road, the Azera delivers spirited performance, thanks to an all-new, all-aluminum 3.8-liter V6 engine under the hood that delivers an estimated 265 horsepower, more standard horsepower than the Ford Five Hundred and the Buick LaCrosse. This engine is also environmentally friendly, as it is projected to achieve Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification levels. This high-tech V6 comes teamed with a five-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual control. Its road manners are well-honed, with responsive four-wheel independent suspension featuring double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, all riding on alloy wheels. Clearly, the Azera has the hardware to go wheel-to-wheel with the competition.
Moving to the interior, the Azera is the most luxurious Hyundai to ever grace the highway. The interior appointments rival the finest premium brands, and it offers amenities befitting a flagship model, such as dual-zone climate control; an electronic tilt and telescopic steering column; an integrated memory system for the driver’s seat, outside mirrors, steering column and foot pedals; a power rear sunshade; rain-sensing windshield wipers; and sumptuous leather seating surfaces.
The Azera also rewards the driver with an available Infinity® audio system featuring a 7-channel, 315-watt digital amplifier, 10 speakers and a subwoofer, speed-sensitive volume, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and an in-dash 6-disc CD auto-changer.
To further enhance its luxury appeal, the Azera’s interior is tastefully appointed with attractive woodgrain trim and distinctive metal accent pieces.
Compared to the 2005 XG350, the all-new Azera is longer, wider and rides on a wheelbase stretched 1.1 inches over the XG350. The interior also benefits from the increased exterior dimensions, as it is larger than its predecessor, and has more interior room than the BMW 760i and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Available in Hyundai dealerships later this fall, the 2006 Azera offers buyers the best value in the segment with a segment-leading list of standard safety features including ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with traction control; ABS with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), front dual active headrests, and a total of eight airbags – advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seat occupants.
“The XG350 has been an exemplary sedan,” said Robert Cosmai, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. “And this all-new Azera takes luxury appointments and personal comfort to a whole new level of sophistication. In addition, it continues to offer the roominess and luxury of cars costing much more and delivers on Hyundai’s promise of superior value,” he added.
The XG was first introduced for the 2001 model year as the XG300. For the 2002 model year, the engine displacement was increased from 3.0-liters up to 3.5-liters, and as a result the XG300 became the XG350. For the 2006 model year, the engineers started with a clean sheet, so rather than an evolutionary face-lift of the XG, the Azera is a fresh new vehicle from the tires up, hence the new name affirming its fresh start.
As with every vehicle Hyundai sells in the U.S., every 2006 Azera comes equipped with The Hyundai Advantage, America’s Best Warranty, a package that reflects Hyundai’s confidence in the quality of its products.
The Hyundai Advantage includes limited bumper-to-bumper coverage for five years or 60,000 miles, which exceeds the coverage on many cars costing more than twice as much. In addition, Azera buyers receive 24-hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five years (no mileage limit) and that service includes emergency towing, lockout service and limited coverage for trip-interruption expenses.
Hyundai also provides Azera buyers with industry-leading limited powertrain coverage – 10 years or 100,000 miles – and that coverage remains in effect when ownership of the car is transferred to other family members. Even if the car is sold, Hyundai backs Azera’s powertrain for five years or 60,000 miles. Anti-perforation coverage is provided for seven years/unlimited miles. There is no deductible on any of these coverages.

Yeah but you'd think they would, you know, improve by now...I mean even GM, they're slower than molasses, is getting into the variable valve thing with their new V6 engines.

Hyundai Azera News...Toyota Avalon (maybe even ES330 beater!!!)

Well, looks like Hyundai did it again!!

Link to Insideline Article

Hyundai Embraces Luxury

By Kelly Toepke
Date posted: 10-24-2005

"Koreans are never satisfied," said Shi Hong Choe. "We are always working, always improving. If I see something out of place, I cannot rest until it's corrected."

It's employees like Mr. Choe, Hyundai's senior vice president of vehicle test and development, who are enabling the Korean automaker to challenge the Japanese Big Three — Toyota, Honda and Nissan — one carefully engineered new model at a time.

Hot on the heels of the successful redesign of the midsize Sonata is Hyundai's new flagship sedan, the 2006 Hyundai Azera. Replacing the outgoing Hyundai XG350, the Azera is a modern sedan that should allow Mr. Choe to rest easier. A polished new look, luxurious interior, and a lengthy list of standard safety equipment provide the Azera with the right hardware to take on Toyota's popular full-size Avalon sedan.

Quickest Hyundai Ever
Under the big Hyundai's hood lies a new ultralow emissions (ULEV) DOHC 3.8-liter, V6 engine with continuously variable valve timing (CVVT). Rated at 263 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, this refined V6 is big brother to the Sonata's smooth 3.3-liter V6. A well-timed five-speed automatic transmission with a gated shifter comes standard with the single-engine offering. The shifter allows you to shift gears manually, but the engine is so strong and the transmission so responsive, it isn't necessary.

Hyundai says the front-wheel-drive Azera is the quickest Hyundai ever built, with a manufacturer reported 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds. If that's true, it'll be quicker than the last Avalon we tested, which hit 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. We haven't put the Azera through our own instrumented tests yet, but it does feel quick out on the open road.

Down below, the Azera's all-new platform is a stretched version of the Sonata's and it has 68-percent greater body stiffness than the XG350. A healthy dose of unique Azera bits combine with similar Sonata attachment points to help keep the cost down. Sixteen-inch wheels secure the Azera SE's four corners, while the Limited gets 17-inch wheels with P235/55VR17 Michelin tires.

Its dynamics were tuned in Korea as well as at Hyundai's super-secret test facility in the Mojave Desert. Although its steering is a touch light, the four-wheel disc brakes are strong and pedal feel is above average. At 3,629 pounds, this large, heavy sedan still needs to be guided instead of flung through tight turns, but the Azera is much more athletic than its spongy predecessor. Mr. Choe must smile when he feels the Azera's firm grip at speed. We did.

Safety First
Determined to become an industry leader in the standard application of safety technologies, Hyundai is spreading airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) across its lineup and the Azera is no exception. The luxury sedan receives two additional airbags to Hyundai's typical six-count for a total of eight, plus standard traction control. Standard antilock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) help bring the Azera to a safe stop.

Hyundai claims that the Azera is projected to receive the highest crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Lex-dai or Hyun-us
Hyundai admits to setting its sights on the Toyota Avalon, but the Azera is so luxurious inside, challenging the Lexus ES 330 isn't out of the question. The Azera's center stack is clean and elegant with wood and aluminum trim galore, and there's no cheap plastic to be found. Instead, quality touches like a thick headliner, fabric-wrapped door pillars and triple door seals help the Azera envelope passengers in quiet comfort. Contrast stitching along the soft leather seat covers help to increase the Azera's style quotient.

With nearly 44 inches of legroom in the front and over 38 inches for rear-seat passengers, the Azera offers a roomy ride with exceptionally comfortable seats that provide solid support underneath their softly padded exterior. Efficient packaging has maximized total passenger volume, allowing an increase of 7 cubic feet over the XG350.

But if the classy, comfortable interior doesn't make you think Lexus, the lengthy feature list will. An SE gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power front seats, a 60/40-split rear seat to increase cargo capacity to 16.6 cubic feet, dual automatic climate control, and a CD/MP3 player.

The Limited adds larger wheels, heated leather seats in a choice of three colors, a wood grain steering wheel, a power rear sunshade, and an electroluminescent instrument cluster. Add the Premium Package and you'll get a power sunroof and a 300-watt in-dash six-disc Infinity sound system. An Ultimate Package (remember, we're still under $30,000) adds a power-adjustable tilt-and-telescopic steering column and adjustable pedals, rain-sensing wipers and folding side mirrors.

All for the Low, Low Price
With similar horsepower and torque ratings from their V6 power plants and comparable interior features, the major distinction between the Azera and the Avalon is the price. Although the Azera's pricing hasn't been fixed and won't be until the sedan hits Hyundai showrooms in November, preliminary pricing suggests it'll have a clear advantage.

The base model Azera SE is expected to enter the market around $25,000, with top-of-the-line Limited trim starting near $27,000. Even better, Hyundai officials claim a fully loaded Azera Limited will remain under $30,000. By comparison, the entry-level Avalon XL starts at $27,165 and climbs to $34,355 for the Limited sedan. Combine the low price with Hyundai's acclaimed 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, and the Azera presents a pretty compelling package.

Winning Package
Hyundai's only concern should be luring consumers in for a test-drive. Although the company is playing to win with the 2006 Hyundai Azera, it might take some time to drag consumers out of their Japanese-car safety zone and ask them to risk a Korean alternative.

Hopefully incentives like the world's best warranty; a low, low price; and an increasing track record for reliability will drive the Azera toward a place in the spotlight. And allow Mr. Choe to take a well-earned vacation.

If the Koreans can do it...why is it so hard for us to do it? The Koreans....ahahaa this so reminds me of when Honda and Toyota were the butt of the automotive jokes.

They probably could take on Toyota and come close to lexus if they also had the dependability to back up the product, warranty or not.

I know they're gunning for the Avalon, but geez they practically copied the interior.

Anyways, it looks promising. In that other interior shot you see the headrests and they look like they're as thickly bolstered as the Acura RL's.

So what? Toyota/Lexus (Lexus, especially) has been doing it for years.

I'm just saying, Hyundai could've been a little more ambitious. instead they take elements of every other car for their exterior, and then mimic the Avalon's interior. Some originality from Hyundai once in a while wouldn't hurt, you know.

Actually like the Hyundais interior better, I hate how Toyota has been using their silver plastics lately and I don't like the dash layout in the Avalon...

Why be ambitious at this stage when they can work off and copy a model that works?

Because that model doesn't work in the long run. Just look at the previous post re: Toyota/Lexus, people give them shit for it. If Hyundai were smart, they'd take the best of what the Japanese are good at (reliability, build quality) and ignore their weaknesses (design).

And besides, even Toyota/Lexus is moving away from that. Look at the latest IS and upcoming LS. Derivative? Yeah, but nowhere near the blatant copying that Hyundai has now perfected.

Look at this Azera - how many other cars can you think of when you look at the details of the design? I see Accord tailights, Mazda Millennia front, Audi greenhouse. There is literally nothing unique about it.

hyundai isn't in the position of making bold new designs yet. it's hard to be completely original now days. as long as it's not a mirror image of other designs, i think it's ok for right now. they made a safe business decision.

and consumers aren't complaining

The only thing I really don't like about the exterior design and what comes to my mind when I see it is the Sonata headlights. Having Audi like design qualities etc can only help Hyundai, but I really don't see any of those qualities in this car.

2nd, people giving Lexus shit for having a similiar design as Toyota wouldn't be considered in the same way as hyundai taking ques from upper end cars that aren't even in their company. They really have nothing to lose at this point by taking ideas from higher end cars that are successful.

If anything, I see an exterior that really isn't all that hot for drawing in larger numbers of buyers.

I think it's so funny that you expect Hyundai to perform a miracle of making cars that are unique, yet appeal to the mass at the same time (you know, to make money), all at a lower price than the competiton.

They're doing what's necessary to establish themselves as a reliable brand - there's no way around it. I don't recall Toyota introducing Lexus right off the bat... and don't even get me started on the LS400/430 design.

Just curious, what do you drive, phile?

the hyundai sonata model has been around for a while. even before the accord styling was introduced. hyundai had that design way before any of these new models came out. so no copyiing here.

i dont get why everytime a hyundai topic comes up people are hating on it to the point where theyre just accusing and not looking at the issue as a whole. give all cars a fair chance. hyundai has come a long way and theyre the only ones that seems to be moving up at such an incredible rate
