Honda's new V10 confirmed for 2008...

Source: http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/03/...rmed-for-2008/

Honda said on Saturday that it is considering building its first Japanese factory since 1976 to make power trains or assemble cars, reports Bloomberg. On Friday, Nikkei English News said the plant will be used to build new VTEC motors and a V10 engine for sports cars, coming as soon as 2008. Honda is widely expected to unveil a V10-based NSX successor in the 2008 to 2009 timeframe. According to a recent Auto Motor und Sport report, the new Honda/Acura NSX will move upmarket, and will target Aston Martin.

Woah... big news. Ofcourse we all knew the V10 was coming, but there nothing like a confirmation. Also very, very interesting to note; they'll be targeting Aston. Five years ago, Aston wasn't even on compeitior's radars... now they're being targeted instead of target being someone like Porsche. Major kudos to them.

me either I liked the lower price of the NSX and the fact you can get a 99 right now for about 50k or less.

Basically this announcement means that the next gen NSX is in for a MAJOR price increase. The current gen is 90K, so I'd venture to guess the next gen will be 100K plus. Acura better be careful or they will price the car out of the market.

to honda

but i wonder why they chose to target aston
so the next nsx is gonna be a plushy sports car??

i mean, astons are nice but they dont win in sports car categories against the competition.....why not target ferrari's F430 (or F"watever" at that time)

i'd hate to think that honda is aimiing low in the sports category

...because Acura is a niche brand.....and going up against Aston Martin is niche brand thinking for ya.

dont aim at Aston Martin, that's Lexus' job. Aim at Ferrari, you've beaten them once already.

What makes them think that if they couldn't make money with the cuyrrent NSX that an even more expensive one will sell?
This has the makings of Phateon type flop - a very good car people just won't buy (mainly because of the name).

cant find it, but c&d had the NSX vs. the F355 vs. the Esprit in an older article. The NSX won the comparison; one of many it'd win in its 15 years.

The NSX is created solely for building the Acura brand image. Part of the engine is assembled by hand, and the car is assembled in high precision. The production output is deliberately slow, because Acura don't expect to sell many of them to create exclusivity. Otherwise it won't be around for so many years and without some major facelifts. On the other hand, the Phaeton was not destined for limited sales, and was manufactured in mass quantity.

Not a good news at all, I hope the V10 + FR + SH-AWD setup isn't true.

Honda's main goal is not to sell kajillions of NSX. Their goal is to prove that they CAN compete in the supercar area. IMO

The NSX was never a supercar IMO, rather a high end sports car. It's performance has always been about average with other sports cars in the market.

Not when it first came out in 1990. But yeah, it hasn't been the same for the last 7, 8 years because its competitors have greatly improved.

I used to think it stuck around for so long was because Honda wanted a halo car. But it was just pointed out recently with the news of the NSX's demise that the reason Honda kept it around so long was because they had a contract with the aluminum supplier that apparently only ended now.

It's performance wasn't spectacular then either. It was as fast as a standard Vette and the ZR1 spanked it. The advantage the NSX had was it's exotic look and nice interior.

The 1990 ZR1 = today's Z06, it was faster than anything else in the market. But the 1990 NSX was faster than 348TB and 911 at that time.

I think the other competitors were so pissed that Honda could do this. That's why they jumped way ahead and Honda didn't even want to catch up until now.

Well back then when the NSX first came out, I'm thinking that Ferrari and Porsche weren't too happy that a Honda can beat one of their cars. Even though the advancement of Ferrari and Porsche were going to happen even if the NSX didn't come out, I think that they were aiming at the NSX. Of course, Ferrari and Porsche advanced WAY over Honda and Honda just stayed behind and finally made a move now. IMO

Honda hangs onto any of their sports cars for a little too long. Look how long the S2000 and NSX stayed basically the same with minor changes.

The car market is evolving faster than people think. If you stand still for 15 years with the same design, newer designs are bound to exceed it.
