Post Update

Honda and its luxury division, Acura, have expanded a 3-year old recall to include an additional 833,000 vehicles, for a running total of over 1.6 million vehicles that have been recalled in order to fix faulty airbags.

Unlike the 1st 2 recalls for the faulty driver’s airbags, the latest recall covers vehicles that did not come from the factory with faulty parts, but rather potentially had faulty Honda parts installed after being involved in a collision. Because Honda cannot properly identify exactly which vehicles have the faulty parts, the automaker must recall all 833,000 vehicles and inspect them to determine if they contain the dangerous airbag inflators.

The vehicles included in the new recall are the Honda Accord and Civic, model years 2001 and 2002, the 2002 Odyssey, the 2003 CR-V, as well as some Acura 2002-2003 3.2 TL and 3.2 CL vehicles. Although 833,000 vehicles need to be inspected, it is believed just 2,430 vehicles actually contain the faulty airbag inflator service parts.

To date, several injuries have been reported, as well as one death as a result of the faulty airbags. In the event of an accident, the airbags can deploy with too much pressure, which can rupture the inflator casing, sending metal fragments into the driver and potentially causing injury or death.

The recall will officially begin in May and Honda will be notifying all potentially affected owners via mail.

So if your call was not involved in a collision where the airbags had to be replaced, your vehicle is still subject to recall?

How accurate is your odometer ??

Often overstating and there by shortening your warranty and
overstating MPG how accurate is your odometer ??
Measure it to a known distance and post your year model and results. Speedometer too ...

FYI - For Honda Acura Owners ... there is a class action lawsuit on odometer overstatement.

When I had my Acura, it was reading 26 miles to work. Granted, my tires were slightly smaller (215/50/17 OEM vs. 225/40/28).

With my new car, it's 20 miles. No wonder I was racking up miles fast on the TL-S.

Service Bulletin 06-085

Applies To: See VEHICLES AFFECTED May 9, 2008
Warranty Extension: Vehicle Warranty Mileage
(Supersedes 06-085, dated January 22, 2008, to update the information marked by the black bar)
BACKGROUND
On December 29, 2007, a federal court provided final approval of the settlement of a class action lawsuit alleging that the odometers on certain 2002 through 2006 Honda models, and some 2007 Fit models, were overstating mileage. As part of the settlement, American Honda is extending the mileage-based coverage period of all warranties, Honda Care Service Contracts, and Honda Certified Used Vehicles by 5 percent on the above referenced vehicles.
The time limits for all warranties are unchanged.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
The vehicles affected by this settlement include certain 2002 through 2006 Honda models and some 2007 Fit models purchased or leased between April 13, 2002, and November 7, 2006. The affected region is the United States (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Affected vehicles registered to customers with a military or a NATO address are also included in this settlement.
The most effective way to check a vehicle’s warranty coverage is by a VIN status inquiry.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
American Honda notified affected customers by mail or publication. The notices were sent to original registered purchasers, informing them of the terms of the settlement. Notice was also published in a national newspaper.
To view the content of the mailed notice, as well as other documents regarding the settlement, or for additional information, please refer to these sources:
Website: www.odosettlementinfo.com
Information Center: (888) 888-3082 CORRECTIVE ACTION
On affected vehicles, the settlement requires you to honor a 5 percent increase in the mileage coverage period for all warranties, all Honda Certified Used Vehicles, and those Honda Care Service Contracts purchased only by the original owners.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
Use the chart below as a reference for converting most standard warranty mileage limits to the extended mileage coverage.
Use the chart on page 2 as a reference to all service bulletins affected by the extended mileage coverage.
In addition to the 5 percent mileage increase in warranty coverage, any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

Lightbulb Update

TOKYO – Honda Motor is recalling 304,000 vehicles globally for air-bags that may inflate with too much pressure in a crash, send metal and plastic pieces flying and cause injuries or deaths.

Honda said there have been 20 accidents so far related to the problems, including 1 deaths in the United States in 2009.

The Japanese automaker announced the recall Friday, which affects the Accord, Civic, Odyssey, Pilot, CR-V and other models, manufactured in 2001 and 2002.

The recall spans 273,000 vehicles in the U.S., some 27,000 in Canada, nearly 2,000 vehicles in Japan and another 2,000 in other countries. It affected 359 vehicles in Europe — 200 in Germany, 158 in Israel and one in Great Britain, according to Honda.

The latest recall is an expansion of recalls for the same problem in 2008, and again carried out in 2009, as well as last year. The recall now covers about 2 million vehicles worldwide, according to Tokyo-based Honda.

Honda spokesman Hajime Kaneko said the cause for the latest recall was the use of incorrect material in the chemical used to deploy air bags.

The initial cause of the recall was excessive moisture in the inflator propellant, which is part of what inflates the air bag.

But that problem was found later to affect more vehicles than initially estimated, as incidents didn't stop happening, and the recall was expanded to account for the possibility that the problem was caused by a defective stamping machine used during production, he said.

Honda said it is extremely sorry about the recalls but believes the problem has now been taken care of, with no more recalls linked to this problem expected, he said.

Also included in the latest recall are 912 air-bag service parts sold for installation in vehicles for collision repair and other reasons, Honda said.

There was a Honda 5AT recall for oil pipe installation to provide additional lubrication on the countershaft 2nd gear. Our Pilot had it done in the first year or two, it's now at 197K, never had any AT problems.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Front Lower Control Arm Recall: 2006 Honda CR-V

03/23/2012 - TORRANCE, Calif.
Honda will voluntarily recall 1,316 model-year 2006 CR-V vehicles in the United States to inspect and, if necessary, replace the right front lower control arm. Over time and with extended use, an improper welding process used when manufacturing the control arm may allow the right front lower control arm to break at the weld. If the lower control arm breaks, vehicle handling could be affected, increasing the risk of a crash. No crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will begin in mid-April 2012. In addition to contacting customers by mail, in mid-April, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going on-line to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option 4.

Post CR-Vs & Pilots

DETROIT (Reuters) -- Honda Motor Co. is recalling about 554,000 sport utility vehicles in the United States to inspect for faulty wiring in headlights.

Honda said in a statement that the recall affects CR-V SUVs from model years 2002 to 2004 and Pilot SUVs from model year 2003. The Japanese automaker will inspect and replace parts of the headlight wiring system that could fail, causing the low-beam headlights not to work and increase the risk of crash.

No injuries or crashes have been reported relating to the issue, Honda said.

Letters will be mailed to affected owners in late April, but consumers can see if their vehicles require repairs by going to www.recalls.honda.com or calling 800-999-1009.

Honda to recall 250,000 vans and crossovers over braking problem

A stability control problem that affects vehicle braking has prompted Honda to recall about 250,000 vehicles across the globe, including 183,500 Acura RL and MDX and Honda Pilot models in the United States.

An additional 57,000 cars in Japan, plus an additional 10,000 vehicles sold in Canada, Mexico, Germany, Australia and New Zealand are also on the automaker's recall list. The recall covers 2004 and 2005 model year vehicles in the United States, although it extends to some 2006 model year units globally.

In Japan, the automaker is recalling its Legend, StepWgn, Elysion and Odyssey models. It's worth noting that the Japanese-market Odyssey is different than the North American model.

The issue with the stability control's wiring could cause the brakes to operate even if the driver doesn't push on the brake pedal. Similarly, the brakes might activate more strongly than the driver intended under light braking.

Honda says it isn't aware of any accidents or injuries directly related to the problem.

The Japanese automaker will begin alerting owners soon and it will remedy affected vehicles free of charge at its dealerships.

When I heard about the recall I thought it was going to be for Honda's piss poor quality rotors.....so much for that.

Honda: Recall 205,000 minivans, SUVs for transmission fault Read more at http://www

Honda is recalling more than 200,000 minivans and SUVs in the United States to address an automatic transmission issue.

Honda announced on Thursday that it is recalling 128,000 Honda CR-Vs, 59,000 Honda Odysseys and 17,500 Acura RDXs to fix an automatic transmission fault. All of the vehicles covered by the recall are from the 2012-13 model years.

According to Honda, sub-freezing temperatures could cause the vehicles' brake-shift interlock blocking mechanism to become slow, allowing the shift lever to move from 'Park' position without application of the brake pedal.

If the shift lever slips out of park, it could lead to a rollaway accident. However, no crashes or injuries have been linked to the recall.

Honda will fix the problem by installing an updated brake shift interlock blocking mechanism. The recall is scheduled to begin on May 13.

Honda class-action lawsuit

Hello fellow Acuraziners',

I came across this interesting article: http://www.autoblog.com/2013/10/23/h...wsuit-engines/

It indicates that Honda has settle a massive class-action lawsuit brought against it for engine trouble potentially affecting nearly 1.6 million vehicles. The lawsuit includes Accord (2008-12), Odyssey (2008-13), Pilot (2009-13) and Crosstour (2010-13) models equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 with Variable Cylinder Management, which might experience engine misfire, excessive oil burning and premature spark plug fouling issues.

According to the article: "As part of the settlement, Honda will extend the powertrain warranty on these models for eight years (from time of purchase or lease) with no mileage limitation, and it will also reimburse customers who had to pay out-of-pocket expenses for related repairs such as spark plugs, pistons or, in some cases, apparently, an entirely new engine. (Of course, the repairs had to be related to certain trouble codes.) Lawyers will get no more than $800,000 from Honda and the guy who originally started the case, Vince Eagen, will get $1,000 for his "time and effort."

With this lawsuit, I wonder if Acura will be involved? If this thread is inappropriate, Mod's can remove the thread.

Honda, Mazda, Nissan recall vehicles over Takata airbags

Honda, Mazda, and Nissan are recalling millions of vehicles globally for a defective airbag manufactured by supplier Takata that could possibly explode.

No accidents have been reported related to Monday's recalls.

Honda Motor recalled 2.03 million vehicles for the airbag problem, including 1.02 million in North America and nearly 669,000 in Japan. It said they were manufactured between 2000 and 2005.

That came on top of a million vehicles Honda recalled last year for similar Takata airbag woes..

Nissan Motor recalled 755,000 vehicles globally manufactured from 2001 through 2003, while Mazda Motor recalled nearly 160,000 vehicles manufactured from 2002 through 2004.

Like Honda, both companies announced recalls last year, but in smaller numbers.

Takata recently realized that the earlier recall had not included all of the problem airbags, the automakers said.

Toyota Motor announced an airbag recall earlier this month for 2.27 million vehicles, including some that were recalled last year. One fire was reported related to the defect, but no one was injured in that incident, Toyota said.

Toyota, the world's No. 1 automaker, was also investigating a crash in Puerto Rico in which the driver suffered a minor cut on the forehead which may have been caused by an abnormal passenger-side airbag deployment.

Toyota's affected models include the Corolla, Matrix, Tundra, Yaris, and Camry. The models recalled at Honda include the Fit, Element and CR-V, while those at Nissan are the Cube, X-Trail and some Infiniti models. Recalled at Mazda were the Atenza and RX-8.

Tokyo-based Takata is a major manufacturer of airbags, seat belts, steering wheels and other auto parts

Headline: Honda underreported 1,729 deaths and injuries

Honda failed to report 1,729 serious accidents resulting in injuries or deaths to U.S. safety regulators.

The company knew about the accidents that took place between 2003 and 2014, but blamed data entry and computer programming errors for the failure in a regulatory filing Monday.

Automakers are required to report any death or injury claims to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on a quarterly basis. The automakers and safety regulator both are supposed to analyze reports of such incidents so that it can be determined if there is a fault in vehicles that should prompt a recall.

The underreporting is likely to cost the Japanese automaker tens of millions of dollars in fines from federal safety regulators.

The news comes as Honda (HMC) finds itself at the center of a recall of more than 6 million cars worldwide with a deadly Takata airbags, which can explode and hit passengers with shrapnel. Honda has acknowledged at least four people who were killed by incidents involving the exploding airbags. The issue also impacts nine other automakers, including Ford (F), General Motors (GM) and Toyota (TM).

Eight of the 1,729 accidents that Honda failed to report to NHTSA involved Takata airbags. One of those accidents, which the company said took place on May 27, 2009, killed a driver named Ashley Parham in Midwest City, Oklahoma.

Among the seven other accidents not reported by Honda was a Sept. 1, 2013 accident that sent shrapnel into the right eye of Air Force Lt. Stephanie Erdman, seriously damaging her vision. Erdman testified about that injury before a Senate committee last week.

The mistakes have come to light after NHTSA asked Honda to conduct an internal review of its reporting process.

NHTSA has not announced whether it will fine the automaker over the underreporting. But it can impose a maximum $35 million fine if a company does not properly report information about accidents involving their cars. GM was forced to pay that amount of money because of a 10-year delay in reporting a faulty ignition switch which has since been tied to at least 35 deaths.

It is possible Honda could be subject to multiple $35 million fines because its underreporting involves many separate types of problems tied to the 1,729 serious accidents. Toyota ended up paying what was then a maximum $16 million to $17 million fine four separate times between 2010 and 2012 for problems related the unintended acceleration of its cars.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has said the $35 million limit for the fine amounts to a "rounding error" for a major automaker which makes billions a year in profits. His department is asking Congress to raise the limit for a fine to $300 million.

Hot off the press. Another HUGE recall.

Statement by American Honda Regarding SRS Electronic Control Unit Recall: 2008-2010 Honda Accord Sedan - Recalls - Honda News

Statement by American Honda Regarding SRS Electronic Control Unit Recall: 2008-2010 Honda Accord Sedan

Feb 3, 2016 - TORRANCE, Calif.
  • Approximately 341,000 Accord Sedans affected in the United States
  • The SRS electronic control unit will be replaced, free of charge
  • Two injuries have been confirmed related to this issue

American Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 341,000 Honda Accord Sedans from the 2008-2010 model years in the U.S. to replace the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) electronic control unit. Manufacturing process issues may allow moisture to enter the circuitry within the SRS electronic control unit, which, over time, can cause corrosion and eventual malfunction of the unit. If the SRS control unit fails from this scenario, the SRS indicator will illuminate on the vehicle’s dashboard, and, in the event of a vehicle crash, the airbags may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury. Honda has confirmed two injuries related to this issue.

A new SRS control unit will be installed in affected vehicles, free of charge. However, due to the large volume of new parts needed to repair affected units, the necessary parts will not be available until fall 2016. As a result, owners of affected vehicles will be informed of the recall in an initial mailed notification letter in mid-March 2016. A second notification letter will be sent to inform owners when parts become available.

In the interim, if a vehicle included in this action displays the SRS indicator on the instrument panel in front of the driver (not to be confused with the “Passenger Airbag Off” indicator located in the central dashboard area), vehicle owners are advised to visit an authorized Honda dealer for a diagnostic check. If the check indicates the safety defect is present, the SRS electronic control unit will be replaced free of charge using a limited supply of updated replacement parts.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage all owners of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda that replacement parts are available for their vehicles. In addition, owners of these vehicles can determine now if their vehicles will require repair by going to Recall Information for Safety & Defects | Honda Owners Site or by calling (888) 234-2138.

Statement by American Honda Regarding Nationwide Recall of Certain Takata PSDI-5 Driver Front Airbag Inflators - Recalls - Honda News

Statement by American Honda Regarding Nationwide Recall of Certain Takata PSDI-5 Driver Front Airbag Inflators

Feb 3, 2016 - TORRANCE, Calif.
  • Approximately 2.23 million Takata PSDI-5 driver front airbag inflators will require replacement in Honda and Acura vehicles in the U.S.
  • No PSDI-5 inflator ruptures have been reported in Honda or Acura vehicles
  • Takata inflators will be replaced with parts from an alternative supplier with repairs beginning in the Summer of 2016

Based on a recent Defect Information Report (16E-005) from the airbag inflator supplier, Takata, Honda will conduct a national recall (16V-061) of approximately 2.23 million Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States to replace, free of charge to vehicle owners, the PSDI-5 Takata driver front airbag inflators installed in those vehicles. Honda has received no reports of Takata PSDI-5 inflator ruptures in Honda or Acura vehicles worldwide.

Honda plans to replace all of these recalled inflators with new parts from an alternative supplier at no cost to owners of Honda and Acura vehicles. Due to the large volume of new inflators needed to repair vehicles, the necessary replacement parts will not become available until Summer 2016. As a result, owners of affected vehicles will be informed of the recall in an initial notification letter within 60 days. Once replacement parts become available, Honda will send a second notification letter to owners with instructions to pursue repair at their local authorized dealer. The second round of notifications will prioritize older model year vehicles located in certain High Absolute Humidity regions1 and will expand to other areas of the country as more replacement parts become available.

The most up-to-date available consumer information about this action can be obtained at Recall Information for Safety & Defects | Honda Owners Site and Recall Information for Safety & Defects | Acura Owners Site or by calling (888) 234-2138. The list of specific vehicle identification numbers (VIN) to be included in this recall has not yet been determined. Therefore, a VIN search at our websites or NTHSA’s recall site is not possible yet for this action. We anticipate that concerned owners of the affected models will be able to accurately search their vehicles’ recall status on these sites beginning on February 15, 2016.

With this new action, a total of approximately 8.51 million Honda and Acura vehicles have been or now are subject to replacement of a Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflator in the United States.

Models included in the PSDI-5 driver front inflator recall in the United States (certain specific vehicles only):
  • 2005-2012 Acura RL
  • 2007-2011 Honda CR-V
  • 2007-2016 Acura RDX (early production MY 2016 vehicles only)
  • 2007-2014 Honda Ridgeline
  • 2009-2014 Honda Fit
  • 2009-2014 Acura TL

WASHINGTON -- Honda Motor Co. on Monday confirmed an 11th U.S. death involving one of its vehicles tied to a faulty Takata Corp. airbag inflator.

The Japanese automaker said the incident occurred in Florida in June 2016 when an individual was working on repairs on a 2001 Honda Accord and the airbag ruptured. At least 17 deaths and 180 injuries worldwide are now tied to the defect that prompted the largest ever auto safety recall and led Takata to file for bankruptcy protection last month.

Takata inflators can explode with excessive force, unleashing metal shrapnel inside cars and trucks.

The Honda Accord was among a group of more than 300,000 unrepaired recalled Honda vehicles equipped with inflators with a substantial risk of rupturing. Honda said the vehicle's registered owners had received at least 12 recall notices but never got recommended repairs.

The individual working on the vehicle in Hialeah, Fla., died a day after sustaining injuries when the airbag deployed.

"The rupture occurred while an individual, who was not the vehicle owner, was attempting to perform unknown repairs inside the vehicle using a hammer while the ignition switch was in the 'on' position," Honda's statement said. "This triggered activation of the airbag inflator, which ruptured during deployment of the airbag."

"It is difficult to determine whether the cause of death in this incident was the inflator rupture, or an interaction of the hammer with the deploying airbag."

Last year, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urged owners to stop driving the "unsafe" cars until they were fixed. NHTSA said 2001-2003 model Honda and Acura vehicles have as high as a 50 percent chance of a dangerous airbag inflator rupture in a crash.

Of the deaths linked to Takata's inflators, 16 took place in Honda vehicles since May 2009, including five in Malaysia using a different type of Takata inflator, while one death occurred in a Ford Motor Co. vehicle in South Carolina in December 2015.

Scott Caudill, COO of TK Holdings, Takata's U.S. unit, said in a court affidavit last month in its bankruptcy filing that the company "faces insurmountable claims" relating to the recalls and owes billions of dollars to automakers.

He disclosed that Takata has recalled, or expects to recall, by 2019 about 125 million vehicles worldwide, including more than 60 million in the United States.

Note to self - don't have hammer and screw driver around when working around an airbag. Oh and disconnect the battery.

Honda to recall 1.2 million vehicles in North America to replace Takata airbags

March 12, 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co said on Tuesday it would recall 1.2 million Honda and Acura vehicles in North America to replace defective Takata airbags on the driver’s side.

The company said here it was aware of one injury linked to the defect, which may have caused the airbag to rupture when it was deployed in a crash.

Of the 23 total deaths worldwide linked to faulty Takata airbags, 21 have occurred in Honda vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall covers 1.1 million U.S. vehicles and is to replace inflators received “either as a permanent Takata airbag inflator recall replacement or as a service part installed following a crash or problem with the airbag itself.”

Another 100,000 vehicles are being recalled in Canada, Mexico and Central America, Honda said.

The Honda models being recalled include 2001-2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, 2001-2005 Honda Civic, 2002-2007 and 2010-2011 Honda CR-V, 2003-2011 Honda Element, 2007 Honda Fit, 2002-2004 Honda Odyssey, 2003-2008 Honda Pilot, and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline.

The Acura models include 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2013-2016 Acura ILX, 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL, 2004-2006 and 2009-2014 Acura TL, 2007-2016 Acura RDX, and 2010-2013 Acura ZDX.

More than 290 injuries worldwide have been linked to Takata inflators that could explode, spraying metal shrapnel inside cars and trucks. In total, 19 automakers are recalling more than 100 million potentially faulty inflators worldwide.

Repairs of the recalled Hondas and Acuras will begin immediately in the United States with replacement parts made by alternate suppliers, Honda said.

Honda became aware of the issue after a Honda Odyssey crash, where the front airbag deployed and injured the driver’s arm.

An investigation later showed that manufacturing issues at Takata’s Mexico facility introduced excessive moisture into the inflator during assembly, leading to the problem.

The total number of recalled inflators is now about 21 million in about 12.9 million Honda and Acura vehicles that have been subject to recall for replacing Takata front airbag inflators in the United States, the company said.

Automakers in the United States repaired more than 7.2 million defective Takata air bag inflators in 2018, as companies have ramped up efforts to track down parts in need of replacement.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Honda Motor Co said on Tuesday it was recalling 1.79 million vehicles worldwide in four separate campaigns, including some linked to reported fires.

The recalls cover 1.4 million vehicles in the United States.

The Japanese automaker said one recall covers 268,000 2002-2006 model year CR-V vehicles in the United States to replace power window master switches. Honda said there had been no reported injuries, but 16 fires reported related to the issue.

Honda conducted a prior recall of the power window master switches in 2012. The new recall is in response to moisture-related failures of switches repaired under the previous campaign.

Honda is also recalling about 735,000 U.S. 2018-2020 Accord, Accord Hybrid and 2019-2020 Insight vehicles to update the Body Control Module software. A programming flaw could disrupt communication causing illumination of several warning lights and malfunction of electronic components, it said, including "the rear view camera display, turn signals and windshield wipers."

Honda is also issuing two recalls covering 430,000 U.S. vehicles in 22 U.S. states and the District of Columbia with significant road salt use to inspect and potentially replace front drive shafts. Both are in response to possible breakage of the drive shafts due to corrosion. No injuries have been reported in relation any of the recalls, the company said.

Honda said repair parts are not available for all vehicles involved in the drive shaft recalls. The recalls cover some 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2007-2014 Honda Fit, 2013-2015 Acura ILX

2013 Acura ILX Hybrid and 2013-2015 Honda Accord vehicles. No crashes have been reported in the drive shaft or software recalls.

Honda is recalling over half-million vehicles because of a possible premature fuel pump failure. This 628,124 vehicle recall affects models in both the Honda and Acura portfolios but is limited to vehicles from the 2019 and 2020 model years. Honda says the low-pressure fuel pumps have impellers that could deform with exposure to fuel, which results in the fuel pump module failing. As you would imagine, that’s not ideal.

The fix involves replacing the fuel pump. Honda will replace the entire fuel pump module on affected vehicles free of charge. The unfortunate piece of information is that this recall doesn’t officially go to go into effect until May 18, 2021.

If you’re curious if your vehicle falls under this recall notice, here’s the list of affected vehicles:
  • 2019 Acura ILX
  • 2019-20 Acura MDX
  • 2019-20 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid
  • 2019-20 Acura TLX
  • 2019-20 Honda Accord
  • 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid
  • 2019 Honda Civic Type-R
  • 2018-2019 Honda CR-V
  • 2019 Honda Fit
  • 2019 Honda HR-V
  • 2019-20 Honda Insight
  • 2019 Honda Odyssey
  • 2019 Honda Passport
  • 2019 Honda Pilot
  • 2019 Honda Ridgeline
If you’re still unsure if your vehicle is or isn’t on the list, you can input your vehicle identification number into the Honda and Acura recall tools. You can also see if your vehicle falls under the recall by using the National Highway Traffic Safety Association tool here.

Honda, which often scores high in reliability and quality rankings, has announced a tremendous recall for a problem that may leave some customers perplexed. As the headline implies, the hood is prone to open while driving, hitting the windshield or flying off altogether.

The Japanese automaker became aware of this condition five years ago (!!!) when engineers found stress fractures on the hood latch striker of a Ridgeline. With nothing more than adhesive on the striker, the vehicle passed all the durability requirements, and Honda decided to call it a day.

Come April 2017, the company started investigating hood vibrations, noises, and loose hoods after receiving non-safety-related market concerns. Fast forward to December 2017, and technical service bulletin 17-083 was issued to address these problems by adjusting the hood alignment. But clearly, that wasn’t enough. Honda found corrosion in the engine compartment of a Passport during corrosion testing in February 2019, highlighting salt water intrusion due to gaps between the hood and front grille.

Even with this knowledge, Honda implemented checks and adjustments to ensure the right specifications for the hood latch and front seal. Another investigation was initiated in September 2019 after receiving reports of hood vibrations and noises due to stress in the aforementioned striker.

The Japanese automaker then confirmed the first “complete hood latch striker separation in the field” in March 2021. On November 19th, when Honda determined that a safety recall is necessary, the company was aware of 116 warrants claims and no reports of crashes related to this issue.

Submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on November 29th, the report attached at the end of this story highlights 724,826 vehicles produced from 2016 through the 2020 model year. Affected nameplates include the Passport two-row crossover, Pilot three-row crossover, and the Ridgeline workhorse with Pilot underpinnings.

Dealers have been instructed to repair the hood and install a striker support plate or to completely replace the hood at no cost to the customer. Known owners will be notified of the recall on January 17th by first-class mail.
