Honda President and CEO steps down
Honda names Fukui president

Automotive News / April 22, 2003
Takeo Fukui becomes president and CEO of Honda Motor Co.
TOKYO - Honda Motor Co. has appointed senior managing director Takeo Fukui as its president and CEO, replacing Hiroyuki Yoshino.
The appointment of Fukui, 58, who also is president of Honda R&D Co. Ltd., Honda's engineering arm, will be effective in June, when it is approved at the board meeting. Yoshino, 63, will step down to the post of director and adviser after five years as president.
The management succession was not a surprise, being in line with Honda's corporate hierarchy that focuses on engineering. All six of Honda's presidents over the years were president of Honda R&D.
Since 1998, Fukui has headed Honda R&D, while also in charge of Honda's motorsports operations. Before that, he had led Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. for two years from 1996.
In one of his first assignments after joining Honda in 1969, Fukui was a member of the team that developed the Honda CVCC, or Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion engine. That engine made the Honda Civic the first car to meet the strict emission standards set by the U.S. Clean Air Act without using a catalytic converter.
Fukui holds a bachelor's of science degree in applied chemistry from Waseda University in Japan.
