Honda Has Decided To Build Pick-up Truck Off Of Mdx Platform!

I will see it all, after I see an Acura Truck, but with this, I am very close to say, "I have seen it all".

By the way, watch their persistance to stay with V6 engines. Once, I thought that the only way a V8 would make sense for Honda/Acura would be if Honda made a pick-up truck. But then again, this is only a mid-size truck. Anyway, here is the news:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit area Honda dealers got the good news at the Detroit auto show – they will join archrivals Toyota and Nissan in the profitable pickup truck market starting in 2005. Honda, long a holdout from any kind of pickup truck, is planning to release a mid-size pickup along the lines of the Dodge Dakota. It will be built off the Honda Pilot/Acura MDX platform on a unibody frame and powered by a 24-valve six-cylinder engine, according to Roseville, Mich., Honda/Acura dealer Jeffrey Tamaroff. Sources say that Honda’s Lincoln, Ala., assembly plant will be expanded for the as-yet unnamed truck.

Honda had decided to enter the truck market first with the mid-size V-6 configuration before tackling the full-size V-8 sector into which Nissan is propelling its new Titan. For one thing, Honda builds no V-8 engines now and prefers to plow ahead in familiar waters before going after the Big Three and relative newcomers Toyota and Nissan. Meanwhile, Honda dealers have been imploring their factory to make the plunge for several years, once Toyota led the Japanese assault into the market boasting the highest-selling vehicles in the world – the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado. –Mac Gordon

Well, with Nissan having an almost production version ready at Detroit, you have got to have an answer quick. Dealers were very happy though.

Hmmmm... So Honda has decided to enter the truck market in the USA.

Or re-enter the truck market, depending on how you look at it.

That's cool for current Honda owners as they will buy this truck. I seriously doubt they go head to head with the big boys though.

Yeah, I think it will take Honda a while to convince people that their truck is worth buying...especially if it lacks torque (and ALL honda vehicles lack torque for their class).

LMAO, honda is hittin the pipe. Companys who do light work might buy fleets of them. But I don't see the general truck owner buying one... Way to many other good reliable trucks out there, with established names. And much bigger engines and equal/better drivetrains.

This should be interesting. Hey, ya never know... Mabye it'll only be $15k

15K ?? Toyota pick'em ups are about that (in 2 by form) with the 4x4 toyota SR5, extra cab, V6, w/ power package running about 21K (my brother has one in the driveway).

If honda wants to play in the truck market, I'm sure they've done the number crunching. If anything it will be interesting especially if they price their trucks in line with the competition.

If honda made a truck, I'd consider buying one. Heck, Acura makes a luxury sports coupe and I bought one of those

No, you have seen it all when see the Porche suv
Nothing is predictable anymore, I would tell honda to go for it and
then let acura rip off and make their own version. Hell if lincoln
can come up with the blackwood and porche with the cheyene
then acura sure can come up with a pimp looking truck.

Honda truck talk

Honda officials confirm that a light truck concept based on the Japanese automaker’s Pilot sport/utility vehicle will debut at the Detroit auto show in January. But rather than producing a regular pickup truck, Honda’s concept will suggest a sport/utility truck with a four-door cabin and a short rear bed. Look for a production version to follow later in 2004 as a 2005 model.

I know I've seen a picture in a magazine a few months back, but do you happen to have one? Also, have they given it a name yet?

oh my god...it's my CL with a bodykit, modified rear end and upgraded side mirrors. Cool.

Wait a minute... does anyone else see what I see? That picture (from Motortrend) looks as if someone took my cl and slapped the lower half of the MDX onto it. That would look disgusting in person IMO.

Honda to Push Into Pickups

Honda Motor Co. will dip its corporate toe into the potentially lucrative pickup truck market, several well-placed sources report to TheCarConnection.com. In keeping with Honda's approach to light trucks, the vehicle will take aim at a niche segment, rather than the heart, of the huge U.S. pickup market. Derived from the same global unibody platform now used for vehicles such as the midsize Honda Pilot and Acura MDX sport-utility vehicles, the new Honda will feature a ute-like, five-passenger cabin mated to a short pickup bed. In basic concept, it will be similar to Ford's Explorer Sport Trac, though that vehicle rides on a conventional, truck-like frame. Honda will target a suburban lifestyle. The Japanese automaker has long debated the need to enter the pickup segment, and sources say discussions continue over whether to add a full-size truck to the line-up, as well. It appears likely Honda will wait to see how the new Nissan Titan and the next-generation Toyota Tundra are received before making a final decision. But the potential market is there, according to Dan Gorrell, a senior analyst with Strategic Visions, Inc. "The Honda brand is extremely strong and could support forays into other segments," Gorrell says, but he notes that the company has traditionally been cautious about breaking into new segments. Honda was the last of the Japanese big three to make a serious entry into the booming U.S. light truck market, though demand for vehicles like the Pilot and the new Element have proved strong. The automaker will provide a sneak peek of its new pickup/ute at a media gathering in Detroit on Thursday, with a public debut set for the North American International Auto Show early next month. The new vehicle is expected to be produced at one of the two Honda truck plants in North America. -Paul Eisenstein
