Honda: Fit/Jazz News

From TOV

HONDA TO DEBUT 1.3-LITER-CLASS SUBCOMPACT IN U.S. THIS YEAR

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Honda Motor Co. (7267) will start selling a 1.3-liter-class subcompact in the U.S. as early as this year to fend off its South Korean rivals, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun has learned. The model will be based on the Fit, which is highly popular in Japan, and the automaker expects annual sales of 50,000. Priced at around 10,000 dollars for the lowest-end model, it will be cheaper than the company's Civic, which is priced between 13,000 dollars and 20,000 dollars for models with 1,300-2,000cc engines. Honda at this point is considering exporting the vehicles from Japan, but may produce them in Brazil instead if the dollar continues to trade below 110 yen and makes exports from Japan less profitable or even loss making. Honda sold 1.35 million new cars in the U.S. last year, a gain of 8% on the year and a record. But the strong performance owed to solid sales of the Pilot sport utility vehicle and other nonpassenger cars. Honda and other Japanese automakers have long dominated the subcompact field, but are now facing stiff competition from Hyundai Motor Co. of South Korea. The South Korean automaker's market share in the U.S. grew from 1.8% in 1998 to 5.7% in 2003. (The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Thursday morning edition)
EDIT: Here are some pics for those unfamiliar with this very popular Japanese vehicle.

Its also sold in Europe as the Jazz.

Not sure if its official, in fact its not "official" as Hondanews.com has'nt posted it, but it looks very likely and why not it makes perfect sense.

About friggin time, I hope Honda sees the light and brings the Fit over the compete with the Scions, even though Scions aren't sold my area until this June.

I love the Honda Fit.

So Honda has finally brought the car that was successfull both in the Asian and European market, it's about time.
The Fit/Jazz has been compared to the perfect blend of compact and cross ute in a civic-like package. The quality of the build has also been praised. Hopefully, they will price this under the current civic, since the Civic has gone out of the 'value' market in comparision to other non-NA makers.

Junkster, who would love to own a Jazz/Fit.

I'd take a Fit/Jazz! Felll in love with the car when I went to Japan two years ago. So if they bring it over, will the current line just not be re-designed until the 5-year cycle is up in America? Is Honda willing to wait that long for one of Japan's best selling cars?

This was posted this morning over at vtec.net. Then again, Honda said they weren't building a truck either.

Automotive News is reporting today that Honda has denied reports by Japan's Nihon Keizai business daily that a decision has been reached to market the Fit in the US.

A Honda spokesman has been quoted as saying "It's pure speculation," and "We've said that we're studying a model that's below the Civic class, but nothing has been decided."

When queried, the Honda spokesperson with whom I conversed deferred, using the standard canned response: "We don't discuss future product plans."

this car looks like a 4 dr version of the current civic si, which looks ugly to me. i wonder how much it will cost, the horsepower on the car will be, and will it be made in ohio or imported from japan?

Smile Spotted the Honda Fit today!

While I was driving home from downtown Los Angeles today, I spotted the Honda Fit today..right on the side of the road! THe rear emblem was masked, but the car was so nice that it literally stood out from the road. I slowed for a minute and checked it out. I didn't have my camera out at the time, so I had to make a detour to go back to the road..but with all the one ways in downtown I was a bit too late with the camera, they already placed it back on the trailer, I did manage to snap this pic though:

Some thoughts:

The color choice (some light blue metallic) is very nice, and original. Definitely attractive.

The stance reminds me of the Toyota Prius (current model) from the rear. The front grille and hood is large and pretty agressive looking. Definitely better than any Scion that's out here. Also, Driving next to it in my TSX, It looks to be pretty big in size (in order words..it doesn't LOOK small)

Based on looks alone..I say Honda has a real winner here, if they price it right against the Scion. I haven't been to Japan to see the Fit but this being my first time it was a neat experience

I also spoted a new Hyundai on the road today, it was camoflauged, but had the Hyundai logo on it, and out of state plates (Colorado?). Probably doing some long distance testing. Could this be the next tiburon? Or a new model? The styling is definitely more angular than the current tiburon, and cleaner.

These pictures are at this location:

That's not a current gen Fit. The Fit's rear looks like this...

You sure that's a Fit?

Current Fit? no....it looked better than it. I was skeptical that it was a Fit, but I don't know what else to call this mysterious car. The rear was much nicer (clear tailights), high rear and wedge shape, and a large agressive grill witha a big "H" emblem. Since the only car confirming coming out for Honda that fits this profile is based on the Fit, I chose to call it a fit...anybody working for Honda care to elaborate

Technically speaking, it is a Fit. However, it uses the sheet metal from the Jazz. After looking at it on the Honda UK website, the pictures from the original post look similar to the rear end on the Jazz, which is the same as the Fit, just named differently for different markets.

So...they combine the Fit and Jazz..so the name should be Fizz?? Judging from the small tape covered badge, the name should be short...

Uhhh...NO...the Jazz and the Fit are the same design.

And it looks nothing like the "Fit" in the spy pic. So, it's either the next gen Fit, which would be interesting. But, Honda is about to release a "new" (otherwise a refreshed) Fit in Japan soon. And it looks nothing like the one in the spy pic either.

Very likely a new model of the Fit/Jazz. Since I saw the car when it was outside that trailer, I can positively say it is unlike any Honda I've ever seen. The Fit pales in comparison to this new model in its design

Could it be this car? This car probably rides on the same platform

Note: the picture I took looks closer to the top picture..the bottom picture doesn't look the same. The rear bumper and the lines of the side looks similar in the top picture

Yup...I think you found it...you'll notice the character line is the same, and the handles are about the same area.

...the silver car in the spy pic is a Fit. Or at least looks like a modified Fit/Jazz.

Hehe, all the same. There all from the Small Car Platform.

We're supposed to be getting the newer version of the Fit, not the current one. That looks a lot like the spy pic from thecarconnection, the biggest similarities being the chrome strip, shaoe of the taillights, and the slight bend at the top of the nearly vertical C-pillar, probably to accomodate headroom for the 3rd row seat.

Well what I really meant by Hmmmm is.

- Is that a Fit" or is it even a Honda?
- The fact that it seemed large in person and that car connection link seems to suggest its large really has me excited about this cars release, I'll be waiting patiently.
- Could this be my next car?

Wife wants an SUV. I want a car to go back and forth to work with thats great and gas, yet has some utlity. So do I keep the TSX and buy an SUV OR trade the TSX in for an SUV and buy this Fit or something similar?

Hmmmm..........

Are we really getting a Fit/Jazz here in US? Cuz spotting one filming commercial doesn't mean we getting one. Those Japs really love to film their commericals in US and Europe. But I'm interested

Well, we'll see this model at the Paris Auto Show in Sept. prolly. That's when Honda Europe is suppose to unveil their new mini-MPV. Interesting that their shooting the promo or commercials for this car now. I dunno, I'm not much on post-production.

I too believe that Honda will wait for the 2nd gen Fit/Jazz, before introducing the car to the States. Not unless Honda plans on keeping the 2001 design for a while. Honda Japan already put up a site for the "new" Fit, and from the teaser shots, it looks the same. So it'll be another year or two before we see a full model change in the Fit.

That probably is the new Jazz. There's been reports that they have the next model Jazz in testing in AZ/SoCal/NV somewhere.
The second pic is the lightly refreshed Tiburon, it's coming out in Korea in a few months.
The plates should mostly be Detroit... I've noticed that most test mules and protos get Detroit plates, no matter who the maker is.

Junkster, who sees alot of MB testing in CO

I'm hoping this car has the 2.0L engine geared for fuel economy.

I can't see a 1.4L engine selling all that wll in NA.

But besides that its looks to be a real winner.

Fit and Trim: Honda set to bring car smaller than Civic to U.S., but no separate brand planned
KATHY JACKSON | Automotive News
Posted Date: 1/25/05

DETROIT -- Honda plans to sell in the United States a variation of the front-drive subcompact Honda Fit, which is sold in Japan and Europe.

Honda executives have said the company will bring a car smaller than the Civic to this country but until now have not identified it.

"It will be a variation of the Fit, and it will be here not too far in the future," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co. Inc., at the Detroit auto show.

"Toyota has done a good job with the Scion," he said. "So that's where we're looking, to bring back the youth we've lost. With the current cars we have, that segment has shrunk."

No separate brand

But unlike Scion, Honda will not establish a separate brand for the new small car, Colliver said.

Also, the small car will not be shipped bare like the Scion and accessorized according to dealer and customer orders.

"We had conversations on whether to bring it in slashed down but decided against it," he said. "We plan to load it up. It's better to build it the way they want it. We also looked at establishing a separate brand for the new car but decided against it."

He declined to provide any other details about the car.

Michael Robinet, vice president for global forecast services at CSM Worldwide in Farmington Hills, Mich., said the U.S. Fit will arrive early in 2006 as a 2007 model. He said it will be powered by a 1.5-liter engine equipped with dual overhead camshafts and direct fuel injection.

Some dealers believe the sticker price will be about $12,000. The base price of the 2005 Civic is $13,675 including a $515 destination charge.

Civic sales, aided by cut-rate loans, rose 3.2 percent to 309,196 last year.

Factory equipped

Robinet said although Scion has done a good job attracting customers who want to accessorize their cars, he believes Honda will do well equipping its vehicles at the factory.

"Honda does a lot of production here, so they can more accurately predict what the customers want," Robinet said. "Honda would rather make sure it has the Honda quality through and through and their warranty on it. There is less room for error."

Toyota introduced its Scion youth brand nationally last year. It posted sales of sales of 99,259 in 2004 vs. 10,898 in 2003 when the vehicle was sold in limited markets. Scion has three models.

"We're all hoping Honda brings in a new product line with a more affordable car that our younger and less-affluent buyers can purchase," said Larry Mallory, chairman of the Honda dealer council in a recent interview.

Mallory, owner of Honda of Kirkland in Kirkland, Wash., also said the dealers did not want a separate franchise for the small car: "The two-channel system they currently have, Honda and Acura, is enough to accommodate any and all new products coming out."
