Burning Brakes
The Civic is one of the only vehicles Honda/Acura has that I still like and I'm praying they don't mess it up.

I wonder if the delay is due to competition (like the DI engined Elantra coming), their focus groups at the exterior design or they just want to prepare for the 2016 EPA rules and have to further tweak the drivetrain (or figure out how to cut another 100 lbs off the weight of the car).

The sizzle in the Steak
I hope the delay is due to Honda catching up with the rest of the pack in terms of engine tech and transmission tech.....but then again that worries me too...everytime Honda introduces new auto-transmission tech...it's a reliability mess.
What are the chances the new civic has DI combined with a dual-clutch 6 speed gearbox? Slim? None?
How-bout a turbo on the Si model? Slim? None?
I dunno.

The sizzle in the Steak
The Ford Fiesta will have a dual-clutch box....and it's the cheapest car in the line-up. If Honda wants to play ball with everyone else, they are in serious need of some tech just to catch up with everyone else.

Maybe by the delay, Honda is beginning to get the message that they need to get innovated technology in their products to keep up with the competition? Honda reliability and quality is no longer going to keep them ahead of the game anymore.

In real world comparision tests I doubt any new Elantra is going to beat current Civic just like Sonata cant do it.
Civic is alot more aerodynamic than Honda Accord at higher speeds. result will be that different.
in other markets they have twin tail pipes, 17inch rims Sport model with leather trim, differtn front facia and lights.

I hate to break it to you, but the new Sonata is beating the Accord and the other mid-size sedans in comparison tests!

The Civic was not mentioned but the Fit was used all the time as a comparison on last weeks' Motorweek test of the Fiesta.

ok, I just did.
Motorweek is horrible at pretty much everything they do , so I take what they do on that show with a grain of salt.
However Honda has to do something quite different with the Civic.
It's class is changing, and the Civic needs to move with it.

I disagree...I think the new Ford Fiesta looks great. I love the Kia Forte...and actually quite like the Honda Civic's look. Make it an Si and dayum, it's a looker.
And oh, the Mazda3 and Mitsu Lancer are nice-looking too. So, nothing bland there for me.

Exceptions exist you know!
But otherwise:
Caliber, Cobalt, current Focus, Elantra, Yaris, Corolla, Rio, Jetta, Suzukis, Impreza (non sport models), Sentra, and so on and so forth.

^^ Fiesta is a great looking car...and the Mazda 3....I would love that thing to death if they killed the goofy grin.

You are in a minority, my friend. I think it looks great. far better than any other compact cars. It took smile off mazda3's face, destroys corolla, and makes current civic vanilla. Elantra will win the design award instantly when it comes out. My brother goes to CCS, and new Elantra is like a rockstar right now.
I wasn't joking about Honda seeing the new design direction of Elantra. It will do exactly what Sonata is doing to Accord, but 3 times more effective in global scale because it will be sold in every parts of the country. Honda knows it's a full scale war, and Koreans(elantra, forte) and Americans(focus, cruze) are in it.
and here is a proof.

Just look at a typical anti-hyundai country's reaction. This is from Malaysia. it's their autoblog. I've been to Malaysia 4 times since 1997. They used to view Hyundai as Proton's equal! I can post 20 other car blogs from the world and 95% of posts are extremely positive. Korean cars used to be ridiculed in small asian countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and etc. Much worse than here in the U.S. Yes it sold well because it was significantly cheaper, but Hyundai had zero respect factor. Tide is turning right now. Honda can't afford to screw this up. They know how critical new Civic design is. much more important than MPG IMO.

^^ Take it down a notch.
The Elantra is nice, but it's not the mindblowing design that you keep talking it up about.
...and stop the thread please.

Jetta...? You mean Golf...and I think the Golf is fabulous. The Sentra is decent-looking...
Again, not really sure I agree with you about your previous statement. Keep in mind: the compact market is generally catered to the younger crowd because that is what they can generally afford. The car companies would be shooting themselves in the foot if they made what you think are ugly cars. In general, I think most are decent-looking...
ANYHOW...if this is about the compact car market and we need a debate about it, send it into Car Talk!
Now, about the Civic...Oh yeah, my sister recently bought a 2010 Sport in a white suit. Not bad!

Ignoring the truth is just childish.
Facts
1. Honda/Acura's recent design has been taking some heavy beatings. Every Acuras, Accord, Crosstour, insight, and even CRZ. Odyssey is the only sign of a life IMO.
2. Focus & Elantra are making huge noise in the automotive design world. and there are several strong competitors like Forte and Cruze. Forte isn't a house hold name in the U.S yet, but it's selling hotcake everywhere else.
3. newly designed Sonata is expected to sell well over 250k by next year. that's almost accord category. some expects 300k. Basically Hyundai is doubling Sonata's sale. Elantra will share the same fate. Focus will also be a tremendous seller.
half a$$ed design won't do the job. Toyota recently committed a cardinal sin on TC & Avalon - COMPLACENCY. bad or lazy design will not get the job done. that's why Honda is delaying the process IMO. again, i'm sure Honda knows 40mpg is the new standard. they will achieve 40mpg or at least very high 30's. my only concern is the design.
I don't see Civic and corolla dominating in sales anymore. It's the new world order. just like midsize sedan, there will be players threatening Civic & Corolla's dominance.
