shouldnt be too long, suppose to be $3 p/gal by summer time...it's already upwards of $2.60 for premium in CA

biker 05-10-2004 08:26 AM

The soot levels emitted by car based diesels are not the worry - it's the trucks that cause that.

DEVO 05-10-2004 08:29 AM

Well trucks contribute to the most pollution even though they are the smallest segment.

biker 05-10-2004 08:36 AM

It might get to $3/gal this summer but next fall it will fall back down to below $2/gal and people will forget about it.

DEVO 05-10-2004 08:45 AM

Can't we just invade Saudi Arabia? All kidding aside, even if the price per barrel dropped, we don't have the refineries in place to meet the demand. Seems like somebody fell asleep at the wheel on this one.

phile 05-10-2004 12:33 PM

LOL@invade Saudi Arabia. Gas is rising here in NJ too, but it's not like $2/gallon for regular, though.

BuddySol 05-11-2004 01:17 AM

gas prices will not fall and stay there...if it hits $3 in summer, it may fall back to mid $2, but after that it's just going to go back up above $3 and above...

I'd rather plan for the future, than just this coming fall...

The US Accord sedan is bulky but the Accord coupe doesn't look bulky? You like the way the Accord coupe looks?

Remember, garden gnomes do not have IQ.

tsx-mdxman 05-14-2004 11:52 PM

I like the lines of the Accord coupe much, much better than the bloated-looking sedan. Worst parts of the sedan's look: the C pillar and tail. They are silly-looking. Accord sales are down - I attribute looks (vs its competitors) as the main factor for this.

pending 05-15-2004 06:31 AM

I attribute the sales to the fact there is more good competition than ever before.

In fact, it is the coupe that looks bloated in a STRANGE WAY. What do I mean by that? Take a look at the Camry Solara, with strange overhangs like it was an oversize body just thrown onto 4 wheels. The Accord coupe is similar but not as bad.

jackspat2 05-16-2004 11:56 PM

I've seen premium at 2.85 crossing the border into Arizona. 3 dollars is right around the corner. There is no reason for gas to cost that much. I can't wait till Hydrogen comes out.

Diesel Accord Setting Records in Europe

Accord On Top Of World - - Source: Autoexpress

It's a record breaker! The new Honda Accord diesel has set a total of 19 new world records for speed. Among the figures achieved at the Papenburg oval test track in Germany was an average sustained speed of 130.38mph over a 24-hour period. The car also achieved average fuel economy of 92mpg when driven on a mixed road route. The two cars involved were selected at random off the production line by independent adjudicators.

92mpg?

How the hell?

After 2006 when low sulfur diesel is mandated in the USA, we'll start seeing Diesels being a lot more popular than they are currently.

I've read a DaimlerChrysler claim that they have a prototype Jeep Grand Cherokee with a low-sulfur diesel that gets 35mpg on the highway.

Considering that's double what the thing currently gets, I'm all for low-sulfur diesel. I'd love to have a SUV that size that gets that kind of mileage.

fender4 05-20-2004 09:25 AM

fyi 92mpg imperial = 76 mpg us

Yes but when they release it gas will be more than double than last year,,, so in effect your getting the same mileage and the oil company is making the same profit margine. ie as the cars get more efficient the gas gets higher at a greater rate. OPEC is not stupid, they are going to reem us anyway.

I don't think gas is going to double by 2006.

One never knows though. I will say this much though .. If it does, you're going to see Escalades for sale for $5 on ebay :)

I think you'll see the USA invading Saudi Arabia and others before you see the above.

Honda Accord Hybrid: Honda's Best-Selling Vehicle Goes Hybrid

Accord Hybrid Set to debut later this year with V-6 performance and four-cylinder Fuel Economy

Torrance, Calif. 06/28/2004 -- American Honda released the first images of its 2005 Accord V6 Hybrid, a gas-electric hybrid version of Honda's best-selling car, scheduled to go on-sale at Honda dealerships nationwide later this year. Utilizing a next-generation hybrid powertrain, the Accord V6 Hybrid will deliver power and performance above the current 240-horsepower Accord V6 with the fuel economy of a compact-class, four-cylinder Civic sedan.

"Putting hybrid technology into our most popular model is a further indication of Honda's commitment to hybrid technology and our confidence that consumers are ready for more hybrid models," said Tom Elliot, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The Accord hybrid delivers both increased performance and higher fuel economy. It takes hybrid technology into all new territory."

With class-leading performance and fuel efficiency provided by a highly advanced and super-efficient hybrid V6 powertrain, the Accord Hybrid will produce in excess of 240 horsepower with near-peak torque available across the engine's full operating range for exhilarating performance with superb acceleration, passing power and cruising comfort.

Honda's innovative new Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology further enhances the efficiency of the Accord Hybrid by deactivating three of the engine's six cylinders during cruising and deceleration with no impact to vehicle performance or passenger comfort.

Honda's advanced and super-efficient Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system utilizes a high-output electric motor/generator to provide for more efficient engine operation by capturing electrical energy during braking or deceleration and using that energy to help power the vehicle. In addition, the system features the ability to shut off the engine during vehicle stops for further efficiency gains. The resulting savings in fuel consumption, along with VCM cylinder deactivation, provides for fuel economy comparable to a compact-class Civic sedan powered by a four-cylinder engine.

The Accord Hybrid's exterior has a number of exclusive features including a unique front grille design, new taillight appearance and special hybrid badging, along with a rear trunk lid spoiler and exclusive alloy wheel design.

Honda introduced the Insight, America's first hybrid vehicle and still the fuel economy leader, in December 1999. Honda then took hybrid technology into the mainstream with the introduction of the Civic Hybrid in March 2002. Sales of the Insight and Civic Hybrid accounted for more than half of all U.S. hybrid sales in 2003, according to R.L. Polk vehicle registration data. Civic Hybrid set consecutive sales records in March, April and May with year-to-date sales up nearly 20 percent versus last year through the end of May.

TSX 'R' US 06-28-2004 04:36 PM

WOW!! I'm definately taking one of those for a test drive

provench 06-28-2004 04:41 PM

This is HUGE for the automotive industry ... mark your calendar. IMA goes mainstream ... it's just a matter of time.

My wife's next Odyssey will likely use VCM and IMA no question. I have to be honest, this type of package might cut in to TL sales? Nah ... I guess not, but this should mean that an IMA TL is just around the corner eh?

So much to think about .... where's The Oracle with the IMA roadmap? :D

phile 06-28-2004 04:45 PM

LOL@the taillights, we're complaining about its shape, not its color, Honda!!!

They're pretty cheap in the aftermarket now. $600 will get you a set of philips HIDs.

TMQ 06-28-2004 07:09 PM

The front grille still looks UGLY. Any previous generations do better than this. The tail looks a lot sharper now that they changed it from white to red.

This one will probably be in the TSX price range. Leather, sunroof etc. may still be options?

If Honda had set the time table half a year earlier (just for the gas price hike), imagine the demand! If Honda had not screwed up on the exterior... If Honda had a 4wd version...

z-tec 06-28-2004 08:06 PM

Question:

Why not add IMA to the TSX this year. It has 40 less horsepower than the V6 Accord, much less torque and actually has a suspension that is begging for much more! Is it just me or is it a perfect fit????? Maybe the price is too high? But how much more would it be...another $1500??

Put in the IMA, add XM, heated mirrors, memory seats and power passenger seats and its an untouchable car for the price...
