Honda: Accord News **Sales Decline (page 108)**

By MARK RECHTIN | Automotive News

Honda dealers call it "kissing the ring."

Times have been so good for Honda that their NADA make meetings usually run about 30 minutes and end with smiles. The only rancor involves getting larger allocations of product. But nearly every dealer shows up to pay tribute to Honda boss Dick Colliver, who has taken the franchise to record sales and dealer profits for three straight years.

This year, Colliver's agenda is straightforward. He wants the Accord to beat the Toyota Camry and earn the best-selling car title. He wants dealers to embrace the new customer service program. And he wants dealers to quit using questionable tactics in their local advertising.

"We have a shot at leadership with Accord," said Colliver, American Honda's executive vice president. "We're going to put more effort behind it, but not without protecting the brand. We're not going to throw money at it."

Honda's 36-month lease for $239 per month has no incentive money attached to it, he said. Were Honda to put money behind the car, it would be to reduce the down payment or the money factor.

Honda should reach 1.18 million units this year, a 100,000-unit gain, Colliver said. Most of that will come from the Element SUV, as well as a full year of the redesigned Accord and new Pilot SUV.

But while volume growth is important, keeping the value of the franchise high is paramount, Colliver said.

That's why he's pushing hard for dealers to be validated in the "Excel" customer satisfaction program. Unlike Ford's Blue Oval plan, there is no cash-back incentive for dealers to be involved; but dealers cannot go on incentive trips or be in the President's Club if they are not Excel members.

Honda also will crack down on dealers who use bait-and-switch or other dicey tactics in their local advertising. Dealers will be warned by phone, by letter and in person, before Honda yanks their advertising funds, which range from $90 to $200 per unit, said dealer council chairman Ralph Tucker, dealer principal of Honda Morristown in Morristown, Tenn.

Accord after M3 and S4 in Europe!

Holy Moly!

-----------------------
By Tom Barnard

Here's a super-Accord which could 'charge' past BMW's M3 and the Audi S4. The bodykitted Honda, revealed at last week's Geneva Motor Show, points the way to a new super-quick version - but the big news is that it could use hybrid technology to give it the power needed to take on its German rivals.

"With looks like this, the production version will have to be beyond the performance levels of a Type R," said a Honda insider. "Our target with this Accord is to show that we can beat our German rivals. So the high-performance model will have to be good enough to take on their range-topping models."

The problem so far has been the lack of an engine. The firm is looking at harnessing the performance potential of hybrid powertrains to give both the Accord range and the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology a real image boost. "The Accord has been engineered to accept IMA, and our Dual Note concept demonstrated that hybrids can be more than simply about economy," said our source. The Dual Note, unveiled at 2001's Tokyo Motor Show, is expected to become the new NSX in 2005, and a hot Accord will appear then, too.

The result would be a car with a 200bhp-plus VTEC petrol engine powering the front wheels, and electric hub motors driving the rears. It would have four-wheel drive and offer performance on a par with that of a conventional 350bhp vehicle, but with fuel economy to rival a regular 2.0-litre petrol unit.

I think this is very possible. Actually the numbers are consistent with the RL rumor that I entered here many months ago that called for a 360HP RL using a 3 liter engine for the front wheels making only 200 HP and 160HP coming from 2 IMA motors, one for each rear wheel.

I dont see why we cant see a 350HP TSX-R in 2 years that will do the 1/4 in 13.3 secs and cost $40K

gav ,, have you located any tech data on "Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)",,, just wondering how they keep the torque even between the front and back when shifting a manual trans,, seems like the clutch would disengage the front and the rear would be accelerating,, got to be hard to shift like this,, Honda has this figured out I'm sure but just wondering,,,

Wow. That would be sweet as hell, and the car is great looking.

2 concerns however: 1. How much does all that stuff weigh? 2. How much does it all cost to fix?

I am guessing here. The IMA is totally electronic. So it is commanded via code. I see now reason why the clutch could not be monitored electronically and according to that monitoring, the appropriate commands would be sent to the IMA for more/less/zero power. SOunds logical. Only a guess though. Dont know much about how IMA works. I did videotape the hell out of it at the Chicago Auto Show though.

I cant answer number 2, but the answer to number 1 is that weight is not a major issue. From what I saw from the Lexus electric motors, they are pretty compact and not very heavy at all. Sorry dont remember numbers.

Honda to offer performance package for Accord Coupe

(08:30 July 17, 2003)
Civic Coupe kit availability increases

By JOHN D. STOLL

Honda is juicing up its coupe lineup with the addition of a performance package for the 2003 Honda Accord V-6 Coupe. The company is also increasing availability of the Civic Coupe FP to dealerships on a nationwide basis.
Both dealer-installed packages include a high performance sport-tuned suspension with recalibrated shocks and springs, new wheels and tires, and an aerodynamic rear spoiler and lower body kit. In addition, the Accord kit carries high performance shock absorbers tuned for enhanced road handling characteristics, 17-inch high Yokohama performance treads and Factory Performance-oriented interior enhancements and exterior badging.

The Accord FP package can be installed on any new 2003 Accord V-6 Coupe (manual or automatic transmissions) and must be installed by a Honda dealership, according to the company. The package is covered by warranty and is priced at $4,204 for automatic transmission versions and $3,492 for manuals.

The Civic Factory Performance package debuted last year in limited numbers at select dealers that had preexisting ties with Tire Rack, which provides the Yokohama tires. The package was limited to 500 units and sold out in less than two months. It is now available at all dealers nationwide.

The package can only be fitted on manual transmission Civics and includes: high performance pre-assembled springs that reduce the ride height by one-inch and lower the Civicís roll center; high performance shock absorbers tuned for enhanced handling characteristics; 16-inch, high-performance Yokohamas; a Factory Performance shift knob and interior and exterior badging. The package goes for $3,811.

I guess it will sell, but it certainly doesnít sound like a lot of equipment for 4-grand.

As cool as that might sound for the 6spd, it just puts in too high of a price category.

To me the Accord PP makes about as much sense as Acura making a bodykit for the TL and not the CL.

Honda/Acura says they'll "juice" up the lineup w/ that over priced crap. It's like the "performance package" for the RSX. They might as well put a 2 foot high alum. wing in the FP package and a couple of "typeR" stickers too. If they're not going to increase the hp, why even bother. H/A needs to grow some balls

Give the people what they want.... TypeR.

Sounds like Performance stickers. Between this overpriced car and the RSX's overpriced FP package (what both at 28K) they can't be serious. HELLLO, 350Z, WRX, SRT-4, RX-8.

I think it is to please Honda owners but not a serious attempt to get people that cross-shop.

I KNOW all about it. Lexus's L-tuned package for the GS is no longer available. It helped the suspension but no more speed and IMO, overpriced as well.

Accord gets standard XM radio...

http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=125119

The 2004 Accord gets XM radio...sum-bitch!!!! I want XM radio standard in my 2004 Luxury Sport Sedan. This really pisses me off...you know they will have it on the 2005 TSX or add it in a few months on 2004 TSXs. I wonder if Honda will allow us to retrofit it at no charge...eh, who am I kidding? Damn!!!!
