05 Hybrid Accord

http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=231195

I guess if the new accord will have illuminated steering wheel controls, the 05 TSX most likely will as well.

If it does come out for the 05 tsx it should be a pretty easy retrofit on the 04's.

Wow ... maybe my wife WILL need to upgrade her Odyssey after all. VCM should give a huge lift to the MPG.

Out of all those changes, the Odyssey seems the most impressive. Looks like Honda will ignore Chrysler's 2-rows of folding seats and go straight for Toyota with the 8-passenger seating and split 3rd row. I would've loved to see the folding 2-rows in the Odyssey, but that's where the spare resides and I'd rather have it there than underneath the car's body.

Angry

Looks like someone might have gotten in trouble with that information being posted, cuz it's gone now. No more links off the rumours and news page to the article and any posts made to the news item have disappeared from user accounts (I know cuz I made a post, but it's not listed any more for me).

But anyway, hopefully the 05 TSX will get those illuminated controls as well, and XM too, cuz it'll be a few nice touches to look forward to when I get mine this fall.

From what I saw yesterday the list of changes does look good. The Accord was also listed as having a revised reverse lamp look. So what! I'm thinking a new tail lamp cluster would be nice as well as a front bumper that is more agressive.

The Odyssey's power lift tail gate is great news as it will show up (read: should) on the next MDX and I also wonder what changes will be made to the CR-V's Realtime AWD.

Overall not a bad list. Can't wait to see one for Acura.

They got to change everything about the exterior styling of the present Accord, it needs a weight loss. The headlights are ugly, the rear is ugly, and it needs to go back to the normal 6th gen exterior.

Looks are a subjective thing. Exterior wise I like my 99 Accord more than the current version.

The weight can't go down much - it's already quite light (3200lbs) compared to other mid-sized sedans. Most mid sized sedans in the luxury category are around 3500lbs. Even the smaller TSX weighs more than an Accord.

Well, yes, but I'm talking about the USDM Accord sedan form only, the US Accord coupe is ok, but the the front headlights have to go too.

The Euro/Accord TSX we own is better looking of course.

It's funny. I actually like the look of the new Accord sedan over the previous gen...it just had no style. The new one, like it or not, has a little more aggressive stance...a little more style. The coupe, however, is a different story. I thought the previous gen coupe looked awesome...and very aggressive. The current one doesn't have that. It reminds me of an oversized Cavalier coupe.

I figured out why it looks like a big "butt". The taillights are too low on the US Accord Sedan. Also, the bumper has a weird round shape. Seems like a slight design mod would make it look sportier.

Honda always does something ugly (or controversial) with it's cars. Remember the old Integra's with the beedy headlights, or the recent Prelude with the Pacer-like headlights?

ULEV has very little to do with milage rating - it's an emission rating.

Thumbs up Record-Breaking Accord

i found this article from another forum and it's incredible...i hope Honda considers bringing this engine or a similar variant to NA:

Honda's diesel Accord has set 19 world speed records in its class at the Papenburg high-speed oval track in Germany. One notable record for a production car in its class (2.0 - 2.5-litre engine) were achieving an amazing 92mpg over a 419-mile economy run. The Accord, driven by British Le Mans driver Robin Liddell, also managed a 133.04mph top speed over a one-mile flying start, and 84.25mph from a standing-start mile. During a 24-hour endurance period the i-CDTi recorded an average speed of 130.38mph. The record-setting car will be on Honda's stand at the Birmingham motor show at the end of the month.

Honda Diesel Sets New World Records

Honda Diesel Sets New World Records
Date: May 07, 2004 18:07
Submitted by: Jeff
Source: Honda UK PR
Credibility Rating: N/A

Honda’s new Accord 2.2 i-CTDi Sport has this week set no fewer than 19 world speed records and achieved 3.07 litres / 100 km (92 mpg) fuel economy to boot. British racing driver Robin Liddell and freelance journalist Iain Robertson were part of the European record-setting team.

Amongst the speed records set, which were all achieved in Production Car Class B (2000 – 2500 cc), were 133.04 mph (1 mile flying start), 84.25 mph (1 mile standing start) and an average speed of 130.38 mph over a 24-hour endurance period. These records were all set at Papenburg high-speed oval test track in north-west Germany on 1 and 2 May, and are all subject to FIA ratification.

Two production cars, randomly selected by FIA officials, were used to undertake the speed records, and apart from the fitting of roll-cages, racing harnesses and radio equipment for track-to-pits communication, no other modifications were made to the cars.

Following the speed record attempts, the same two cars were then driven 419 miles from Papenburg test track to Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt in order to complete the fuel economy run. The route comprised of a mixture of motorway and non-motorway driving, during which one of the Accords achieved a staggering 92 mpg average.

The project, whose aim was to demonstrate the performance and economy of the Accord i-CTDi, was a joint production between Honda, the FIA and Italian-based JAS Motorsport, who managed fuelling and pit-stops.

Honda UK’s driver in the speed record attempt, Robin Liddell, who has previously raced at Le Mans 24-hours, as well as the American Le Mans Series and the BRDC British GT championship, commented: "The car’s performance is very impressive, demonstrated by the records we’ve achieved. Honda has made real steps forward in styling, ergonomics and interior design with the new Accord Diesel and now has a package that can take on the best cars in its class."

A complete list of speed records, all subject to FIA ratification, is as follows:

Think we are getting low sulfur fuel starting 2006, and then in 2009 it may go even lower so there's a possibilty and it seems like the best type of engine for hybrids/suvs/etc.

any other details on the engine?

It has to have DOD, or some other goodies to achieve over 90 mpg.

Those are average speeds from a standing start, not final trap speeds.

I rather have a diesel than all of this hybrid hype everyone is talking about.

Most hybrids' increase in milage is not better than a diesel over the normal gas engine yet it costs quite a bit more and involves a number of changes to the car - inlcuding a weight penalty.

Well once they make a break through on ruducing the amount of soot produced by a diesel then there is no stopping that technology.

I read an article that showed that soot is amoung the top reasons for global warming. The theory goes that snow melts quicker when covered with soot. The amount of sunlight absorbed in a given amount of time melts more snow then snow without soot. So the average temperature increases during the cooler month because the amount of sunlight that would normally get reflected back out into space is now absorbed. So while some of the green house gases are reduced using diesel, the net effect is the same.

It has nothing to do with soot - that has been taken care of. The problem is the NOX - diesels emit more than gas engines now and by 2007 both engines have to meet the same emission standards. MB has their urea strategy (they will inject it in the exhaust to lower NOX - urea canister has to be refilled at every oil change). Other makers have not announced how they will solve the NOX problem - but that is the only hurdle left for diesel adoption in the US - well at least the technical hurdle, the psychological one will take a bit longer.

By 2007 when gas will be $3/gal everyday in the US you'll see a pretty large adoption just as has happened in Europe.

True. Everyone's talking about gas/electric hybrids doing well, what about diesel/electric hybrids? They'd be kicking butt as far as gas consumption. And torque for that matter.

I think if they remove the reverse lights they have now and place two smaller ones inside the brake lights like the tsx it would be a nice improvement.

I don't know, I hear soot (the article mentioned NOX as well) is still a problem. Maybe not in smaller engines but in larger one such as found in trucks? I can't find the article but it was pretty recent.
