Post Apollo Speed Teaser

Press release...

GUMPERT Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH will be presenting the apollo speed at the 79th Geneva Motor Show. The racer - made in Germany - has earned his name, and rightly so. For any speed limit is pointless!

Whereas optimum performance for racetracks, lateral acceleration and grip in all situations are the focus of apollo, apollo apollo sport and apollo race, the apollo speed is aimed at an exclusive high speed clientel. Its domain is the mastery of highest speeds. Thanks to polished aerodynamics the drive side values of the speed are far above those of the competition.

Form follows Function

The appearance of apollo speed is now even more classy and aggressive. His striking two tone paint emphasises the racer's compact appearance, at 1,105mm being lower that his brothers at 1,114mm.

A good look from the front reveals the changed design around the wheel arches. A low restrict induction system rounds off the snappy appearance and provides fresh air to the engine. Further modifications have been made to the rear end of this super sports car: The redesigned tail lights concisely show where the apollo is headed to, before it vanishes from the sight of its pursuer. The two-seater also has a small adjustable spoiler to lend it the required drive side for its intoxicating speed.

With a fully enclosed CAS underbody (carbon / aluminium sandwich) and wheel caps (fixed at the front and rotating at the back) the speed takes Formula 1 to the road and is just asking for a challenge to a sprint.

The powerful 8 cylinder Biturbo of apollo speed provides an optional 650 / 700 / 800 HP and a torque of 850 / 875 / 900 Nm. His performance is top class: The car can go from standing still to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds. A speed of 200 km/h is reached in just 8.9 seconds. His maximum speed is over 360 km/h. (Depending on equipment, country-related specifications, gear ratio and engine power)

The racer impresses by its sportive, elegantly equipped interior.

It is available with either leather or Alcantara, and provides a whole panoply of details, such as air conditioning and a DVD moniceiver. The removable steering wheel makes it easy to get in. Embedded in the monocoque and held in by 4 point seat belts, the driver becomes one with the apollo. An intense bond!

Get to know the new, extroverted super sports car by GUMPERT. We look forward to welcoming you to our press conference at our booth 2045 at 11am on 4 March 2009.

GUMPERT Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH will be showcasing its super sports cars at the Geneva Motor Show for the fourth time.

Post 2012 Gumpert Apollo R and Enraged Vesions

Press release...

In the past, the sports car manufacturer GUMPERT has mainly been known for building race cars for the street. At the 82nd Geneva International Motor Show, the exclusive manufacturer premieres the
GUMPERT apollo r, a purebred race car with the brute thrust of up to 860 hp. As the second world premiere, GUMPERT presents the special edition GUMPERT apollo enraged.

“Race cars are not entirely new to us,” says Roland Gumpert about the latest model from Altenburg.
“After all, we competed in the 24h at the ‘Nürburgring’ race course with Heinz-Harald Frentzen in a hybrid apollo in 2008.” Increased demand, especially from Asia, has now prompted the company to offer a pure race car in addition to the street legal apollo and apollo s models. “Many of our customers are driving their apollo on the racecourse, usually during track days or private events. With the apollo r, we allow ambitious drivers among them to participate in open GT events,” continues the manager of the manufacturing company.

Numerous modifications were required to extract up to 860 hp from the 4.2 litre V8 engine. These include a higher supercharging pressure, ignition and control time adjustments, optimisation of the intake air ducts and a special racing exhaust system. Of course maximum performance depends on the use of racing fuel with correspondingly high octane levels. In view of the planned deployment in Asia and the expected temperatures, the engine and transmission cooling system was also enhanced. The spur-toothed dog ring transmission is controlled by rocker switches on the steering wheel but without a clutch pedal. A central digital dashboard supplies the driver with essential information. Otherwise all frills were removed from the interior of the apollo r.

To bring all this brute force to the pavement, the chassis which already set standards was extended with a titanium blade stabiliser on the rear axle. Numerous optimisation measures, for example on milled parts, the wiring harness and undercarriage, as well as eliminating comfort components such as the boot, allowed the charge weight (empty tank) to be reduced to 1,100 kg. “The apollo r is more powerful and lighter than any other apollo. Since we are not necessarily known for understatement, we also decided to put this superiority on display with correspondingly striking foils on the apollo r,” is how Roland Gumpert describes his race car. At the exhibition stand in Geneva, the apollo r presents itself in a black-red-gold foil dress. The driver and passenger doors are each graced by a griffin, a cross between an eagle and lion and therefore the lord of the air as well as the earth.

“Ok, so perhaps it is a bit crazy to take the most extreme, barely still street legal vehicle and make it even more extreme,” says Roland Gumpert about the limited special edition enraged – the unleashed and furious apollo. “But the idea behind the enraged, just like the apollo r itself, embodies our philosophy and our understanding of PURE GERMAN SPEED with absolute consistency.” GUMPERT intends to prove just how well, or how fast, the two vehicles actually realise this philosophy with another record time on the “Nordschleife” race course this year. And as in 2009 when breaking the record for the first time, GUMPERT will approach this together with its tyre supplier and technology partner Michelin.

From the ashes of Gumpert comes a new €2.3m supercar that’ll drive on the ceiling

Remember the Gumpert Apollo? Very fast, very ugly. Very dead. Remember its concept successor from 2016, the Apollo Arrow? That’s a goner too. This is the new, absolutely furious face of Apollo. It’s named Apollo Intensa Emozione, because that sounds better in Italian than ‘Extremely Moody’ does in English. TG’s spent a day poking around the new creation – we’ll just call it the IE for short.

Limited to ten bespoke units priced at a tasty €2.3m a pop, the Apollo IE is a track-only, road-illegal supercar that’s here to launch Apollo into the boutique exotica scene. No longer affiliated with Roland Gumpert, the company’s been bought out and reimagined by Hong Kong businessman Norman Choi, and he’s created what he describes as a nostalgic GT1 racecar for the 21st century. You’re not looking at computer renderings here, by the way. Both the giant top-mounted wing and the car stuck to the other end do indeed exist, and make a quite terrifying noise.

Where the hideous old Gumpert Apollo cloaked a tubular steel chassis in slab-sided carbon panels, the slashed-up IE is all carbon fibre. Carbon tub, carbon crash boxes front and rear (the whole chassis weighs just 105kg) and carbon body panels on top, from the same supplier as Pagani. The whole car weighs in at 1,250kg, Apollo claims.

And thanks to a monumental 1,350kg of claimed net downforce at 186mph, the Apollo IE can uses the same party trick as the old, defunct Gumpert. Yes, it could drive on the ceiling, theoretically. Funny how no-one ever steps up to test that, eh?

Mr Choi tells TopGear.com he thinks the rush for huge, turbocharged power outputs and virtue-signalling hybrid efficiency has diluted the appeal of modern supercars. He says: “I used to have a supercar collection, but I got rid of it all, because nothing excites me. They all drive like Hondas”. Oof. Punchy. That explains why the IE has a relatively old-school powerplant…

Motive force comes from a mid-mounted 6.3-litre V12, driving the rear wheels via a six-speed Hewland pneumatic racing dogring gearbox. The V12 is naturally aspirated, and gets no electro-hybrid boost, unlike a certain Italian hypercar we could name (which also has a 6.3-litre V12 developing exactly 769bhp).

Apollo’s guys clam up pretty quickly when you start to ask where the engine has come from, especially if you use the F-word (no, not that F-word). We’re told the engine is related to Ferrari’s (whoops) F150 project, but has been thoroughly reworked by Italian engineering partner Autotecnica Motori. There is no prancing horse branding to be found. So don’t dare go thinking it’s a Ferrari engine. Got it?

Thanks to a 9,000rpm redline and 560lb ft, Apollo claims 0-62mph in 2.7 seconds, and a top speed of 208mph. Healthy, but not outrageous in our twisted times. But Choi and his company protest the world is far too obsessed with raw, straightline speed (he wonders aloud about Hennessey’s 300mph ambitions more than once) and says his car isn’t supposed to chase the big speeds. It’s supposed to warp around racetracks making an enormous amount of noise instead.

Speaking of noise, the triplet exhaust is a 3D laser-printed item that costs, in Choi’s words, “more than a whole BMW M4”. The material attention to detail everywhere is pretty nuts actually – very Pagani-like in the obsession with lacquered, symmetrical carbon and anodized metal components. The engine compartment? Yeah, that’s lined with heat-reflective gold leaf.

The pushrod suspension is fully adjustable. There’s a built-in airjack. The seats are cushions stuck directly to the carbon tub, and the button-covered steering wheel and pedal box adjust to meet the driver’s limbs. Just like LaOther Italian hypercar we’re not supposed to mention.

Apollo has rounded up a young team to create the IE. Norman Choi himself is just 45, but looks half that. His chief aerodynamicist, who sorted all the downforce using computational fluid dynamics and zero wind tunnel time, is 23. The chief designer is a 27-year old Brit.

Yet, other engineers involved with the oily bits are in their seventies. The IE is supposed to be a supercar that anyone across the generations can appreciate, whether you’re most into power, noise, handling, material science, or lap times. We’ll let you be the judge of that.

Once all ten, completely bespoke Apollo IEs are spoken for, the company intends to distill what it’s learned into a (slightly) cheaper, street-legal car, with the same enthusiast-pleasing, passion-before-performance philosophy. So, if you’ve never got on with the looks or noise of a Pagani Huayra, and Koenigseggs are a bit too fast for your liking, Apollo might have cornered a slice of the unobtanium market.

First, you’d better tell us if it provokes any, ahem, Intense Emotions…
