GMC: Yukon News

GMC Shows Yukon, Denali

The next two versions of GM's new full-size SUVs are on display this week at the California International Auto Show in Anaheim. The GMC Yukon and Yukon Denali, in GM's words, have exceptional driving characteristics. What's immediately obvious, too, is that they have distinctive appearances, much more so than the last editions.

The Yukon is the mass-market edition, available in cloth or leather-trimmed versions with rear- or four-wheel drive. Tall headlamps and smart details distinguish the Yukon from the similar Chevrolet Tahoe. Like the Tahoe and the new Denali, the Yukon is longer and wider than the past versions, has a stiffer body structure and a new power-steering rack, and standard anti-lock brakes with stability control.

Seventeen-inch wheels are standard on the Yukon, as is a 320-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 engine (though a 290-hp, 4.8-liter version will replace that on rear-drive models later in the model year, GM says).

The Yukon Denali, meanwhile, gets some exclusivity added to its image in the 2007 edition. A new 380-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 mated to a tap-shift six-speed automatic transmission is reserved for the Denali model. A chromed grille, different head and taillamps and special 18-inch wheels separate it from the Yukon as well as automatic climate control and remote starting.

Both the Yukon and Denali offer a laundry list of options, including running boards, a power tailgate, DVD navigation and a DVD entertainment system, as well as three-row side-curtain airbags (standard on the Denali). Both versions will be on sale in the first quarter of 2006.

I like the Tahoe's looks better... a little more subtle and sophisticated, with styling lifted from the Range Rover. This is okay, though. And I guess the rumors of a 400HP Escalade are well founded, since the Denali's only power plant is the new 6.2L @ 380HP. And with the Denali available with 20s, I'm guessing that the rumors of the Escalade with available with 22s is true too.

Geez, first the new Malibu's interior looks like the Ford 500, now the front end of this one looks like the 500s, but stretched vertically

As far as looks are concerned, I like my dad's '04 XL Denali much better. It's got a mean face to it, whereas the new one looks like a retard with a smile.

But the TapShift option with the HO engine must be pretty sweet.

It looks like one of those Chinese counterfeit auto companies took an Escalade and made their version of it.

The interior looks a lot better than the Tahoe's - judging by the sheen of the gloss, they're probably using real wood veneer instead of the fake one in the Tahoe.

Front end is plain and the headlight are bad.
Interior is a nice improvement for GM, but the metallic painted plastic on the steering wheel and around the A/C vents looks cheap.

The Tahoe looks better to me. Once again, the interiors look so much better... Let's see if they feel better when I get the chance to sit in one...

This is the only time I've seen a company go from projector headlights to jeweled. Why the step backwards?

Damn right... that interior's awesome. I like the titanium toned gauges, and the wood ring that wraps around the steering wheel is a real nice touch. More wood and metal used here than in the Tahoe. I like the exterior look of the Tahoe more, though. It still as that subtle Range Rover look going on, IMO.

Sort of like how the projector headlights in the Integra --> jeweled headlights in the RSX?
