GMC: Sierra News

GM's upcoming full-size pickups arguably the company's most important new vehicles in years - - Source: Autoweek

General Motors is introducing its next-generation full size pickup trucks, the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, two trucks that could help lead the General out of its financial doldrums.

GM says the trucks have been redesigned from top to bottom: They have new exterior and interior designs, new engines and new chassis.

The Silverado and Sierra are offered with three cab styles, three cargo box lengths and several suspensions setups. GM hopes the range gives customers more choice when trying to suit their needs, particularly with the heavy duty models.

The Silverado and Sierra light-duty models will arrive in the fourth quarter of 2006. Sierra Denali and Silverado and Sierra heavy duty models will be available in the first quarter of 2007. The heavy duty trucks offer more powerful gas and diesel engines.

The new pickups are sleeker and more aerodynamic, including a 57-degree windshield angle designed to reduce wind noise and improve fuel economy. Tolerances between panels are greatly reduced - including a 50-percent reduction in the space between the cab and cargo box.

In addition to the trucks' three cab designs (regular, extended and crew cab), there are three cargo box lengths, including short (5 foot 8 inches), standard (6 foot 6 inches) and long (8 foot). The pickup boxes have been redesigned with enhanced versatility, increased strength and greater capacity. A one-piece wheelhouse and inner box side adds strength and smoother, more integrated appearance. The boxes are 1.18 inches (30 mm) deeper in the front and 1.57 inches (40 mm) deeper at the rear, with stronger inner walls that offer improved performance when fitted with ladder racks, tool boxes and other accessories. New tailgate designs include locks and torque-rod assist for easier operation. A standard end cap on each tailgate features an integrated spoiler lip that enhances aerodynamics.

A new cargo-management system is also available: Three rails that run the length of the box sides and the forward box wall are secured with high-strength anchors and, unlike competitors' systems, incorporate upper and lower tracks. Four adjustable tie-down brackets are included with each system and can be located anywhere on the tracks, each rated for a load point of 500 pounds.

The interiors are designed to be quieter and more spacious and refined. Legroom, headroom and hip room have increased. The recline angle and fore/aft travel of the front seat has been increased and power adjustable pedals are available.

The fourth generation of the legendary small-block is the power behind GM's all-new full-size trucks. Horsepower is up, torque is up, and the pickups will have Active Fuel Management (AFM) and variable valve timing (VVT). A FlexFuel engine is available. GM says highway fuel economy for models equipped with the 5.3L V8 now are estimated at more than 20 mpg for both 2WD and 4WD models. Engines range in size from the 4.3-liter, 195 hp V6, to the 6.0-liter, 367 hp V8.

Meh. I like the Sierra's front fascia barely more than the Silverado's.

I like this better than the Silverado. I was wondering why the 6 speed auto wasn't standard across the board. Does GM not have the capacity to build enough 6 speed automatics?

Yeah, I can just replace it with a Ford badge and no one would know it's a Sierra and not an F-150.

Looks like a step backward in design, IMO. Like it came out of the early 90s.

Post 2014 GMC Sierra Denali

Press release...

The all-new 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 full-size pickup is the most powerful, most advanced and most refined truck in the brand’s 111-year history. Sierra’s bold new exterior houses one of three all-new EcoTec3 engines, a fully updated cabin with available next-generation IntelliLink connectivity and other features designed for the most discerning truck owners.

“Our engineers and designers left nothing on the table when developing this latest Sierra pickup,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing. “These trucks have all the power and capability expected in today’s market, excellent fuel efficiency, plus a lot of unexpected, purposeful features developed with truck owners in mind.”

In addition to all-new design and technology, the 2014 Sierra boasts the longest list of standard features ever for a full-size GMC pickup. From connectivity solutions, to a standard tie-down system in the rear, to the segment’s only standard projector beam headlamps, many premium features are found on each and every all-new Sierra.

Sierra Denali details

The distinctive Sierra Denali returns for 2014, delivering GMC capability with unique design cues and exclusive features.

On the exterior, the truck has a signature Denali chrome grille, unique 20-inch chrome wheels, unique interior decorative trim, a polished stainless steel exhaust outlet and body-color front and rear bumpers. Denali-specific interior details include script on the bright door sills and embossed into the front seats and real aluminum trim.

Sierra Denali’s high-tech interior also features an exclusive eight-inch Customizable Driver Display that can show relevant settings, audio and navigation information in the instrument panel. Sierra Denali’s standard eight-inch Color Touch navigation radio with Intellilink, located above the center console, serves as the main hub for Bluetooth-connected phones and portable devices connected through five standard USB ports.

Other features standard on Sierra Denali include projector-style headlamps with LED signature daytime running lights, a Bose audio system, heated and cooled leather front bucket seats, a heated steering wheel, front and rear park assist and a power sliding rear window with defogger.

New EcoTec3 engines

Sierra’s engine portfolio is updated for 2014 with increased power, torque and fuel efficiency across the board. New 4.3L V-6, 5.3L V-8 and 6.2L V-8 powertrains are offered, all from a shared EcoTec3 engine family. Each engine features standard direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, which means they seamlessly switch to run on four cylinders during light-load driving to save fuel.

The increased power and efficiency of the new engines are the result of more than 10 million hours of sophisticated computer modeling, more than half of which were used to make the best of the combustion process.

The new 4.3L V-6 EcoTec3 engine offers the most torque of any standard V-6 in the segment, with 305 lb.-ft. (413 Nm). Torque is the turning force that generates off-the-line acceleration and confident trailering performance. Sierras equipped with the 4.3L EcoTec3 V-6 will have trailering ratings up to 7,200 pounds (3,266 kg) for a regular cab, short bed, four-wheel-drive model – 500 pounds more than the most capable Ford F-150 3.7L and 700 pounds more than a Ram 1500 3.6L.

Sierra’s standard V-6 also produces an SAE-certified 285 horsepower (212 kW) and is matched with a proven, efficient six-speed automatic transmission.

“Rather than adapting a V-6 intended for use in passenger cars, we built a new engine from the ground up based on the unique demands of a truck,” said Jordan Lee, powertrain chief engineer. “Sierra’s 4.3L shares its basic design architecture with the latest iterations of the V-8 engines that GMC owners have trusted for generations.”

The new 5.3L EcoTec3 is SAE-certified at 355 horsepower (250 kW) and 383 lb.-ft. of torque (519 Nm). With EPA-estimated fuel economy of 23 mpg highway (2WD), it offers the best fuel economy of any V-8 pickup, and beats the fuel economy estimates of the Ford EcoBoost V-6.

The new 6.2L V-8 is available in Sierra SLT and Denali models. It is estimated at 420 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque – the most horsepower and torque of any light truck in the industry (SAE-certified ratings pending). The new 6.2L also enables a 12,000-pound maximum towing capacity for Sierra 1500, which is expected to the highest rating in the class.

EPA fuel economy estimates for the 4.3-liter and 6.2-liter engines will be available later this year when certification is complete.

With the new engine designs and additional developments, customers should expect Sierra’s second-generation Active Fuel Management to be more seamless and capable of operating longer in four-cylinder mode.

All three engines use lightweight aluminum blocks and heads and are mated with durable six-speed automatic transmissions. A “cruise grade braking” feature down-shifts the transmission on downgrades, which is intended to reduce brake wear. V-8 models use new, larger 9.5- and 9.76-inch rear axles with the strength to accommodate the engines’ higher output.

Duralife brake rotors and electric power steering

Strong brakes are important for stopping trucks, whether they’re full of people, payload or both. The 2014 Sierra features four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife brake rotors, which feature a hardened and strengthened surface to reduce corrosion. Duralife rotors – a GM-exclusive technology – are expected to last twice as long as conventional rotors and provide quieter braking with less vibration.

The 2014 Sierra also uses electric power steering. An electric motor in place of an engine-driven hydraulic pump saves fuel and allows for tuning that’s expected to result in a more consistent, crisp steering feel and plenty of assist for parking maneuvers.

The new standard in truck interiors

Premium materials, attention to detail and purposeful technology define Sierra’s all-new cabin. New soft-touch materials and available aluminum trim line an interior that’s focused on usable and productive space.

“Truck owners want a well-crafted cabin, but also one that still feels like a truck,” said Helen Emsley, Sierra interior design director. “They want a purposeful interior, not one that’s flowing like you’d find in a car or crossover.”

Sierra has an upright instrument panel designed for visibility and accessibility. Knobs and buttons are large, legible and within reach. All knobs are coated using a rubber-over-mold technology, so they’re easy to grip even through gloves.

A new instrument cluster on all models features six gauges with an available centrally located, 4.2-inch color Driver Information Center with vehicle status information, a trip computer and other information, such as radio and navigation.

A second, high-mounted glove box with a flat floor joins the traditional box below. Each of Sierra’s doors has storage crafted to hold most beverage containers and other personal items. Along the center stack and center console are additional cupholders, discreet compartments large enough for most laptop computers, and connectivity options. Sierra is available with a 110-volt outlet, up to five USB ports, four 12-volt outlets and an SD card slot.

“Sierra sets a new standard for what’s expected of a pickup truck interior,” said DiSalle. “Our customers told us how they use their trucks and we listened. The combination of comfort, safety, space and technology is unprecedented in the segment.”

Available IntelliLink connectivity uses a high-definition, fully reconfigurable eight-inch color touch screen with an intuitive layout and easy-to-read icons that control audio features, a Pandora app, Bluetooth phone features, and available navigation with all-new map displays. Many of the system’s features can be controlled by voice command, allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Sierra’s seats use dual-density foam designed to stay comfortable over long hours and continue to look great after years of use. Leather and cloth are offered, and Sierra’s new high-wear cloth is designed to last longer and resist staining. A spilled drink will bead on the fabric, not soak in. Heated front seats are available with cloth seats and standard with leather.

New door and bed configurations

For the first time on double cab models, the 2014 Sierra has new front-hinged rear doors with outside pull handles at the rear, providing improved access in tight parking spaces. Unlike trucks with rear-hinged doors, Sierra’s layout allows rear passengers to enter and exit the vehicle with the front doors remaining closed.

Crew cab customers, who represent more than 60 percent of retail Sierra owners, can choose between two bed lengths: a new 6-foot, 6-inch box is available in addition to the standard 5-foot, 8-inch box. Regular cabs continue to be available with the 6-foot, 6-inch or 8-foot box lengths, while the double cab will come exclusively with a 6-foot, 6-inch box.

Cargo box innovations

Sierra’s rear bumper features standard corner steps that make climbing into the bed easy, regardless of whether the tailgate is up or down. The steps are paired with grips formed into the top of each bed side. Four movable upper tie downs are also standard. They can be placed in nine different locations and can bear a 250-pound (113 kg) load. Available LED cargo lights integrated beneath the bed rails will illuminate the bed when a tonneau cover is in place. The available EZ Lift and Lower tailgate uses an integrated torsion bar and damper to ease lifting and lowering.

Driver Alert Technology

Several active safety features are available for the 2014 Sierra, including Forward Collision Alert, which uses a forward-facing camera to notify the driver of an imminent collision, and Lane Departure Warning, which uses the same camera to track the truck’s position in relation to a road’s lane markers.

The camera technology was recently named a “Top Ten Tech Breakthrough of 2012” by Popular Mechanics.

Paired with Forward Collision Alert and Land Departure Warning is GMC’s first-ever Driver Alert Seat, which generates vibrating pulse patterns on the left and/or right side of the lower seat cushion bolster to alert the driver of potential dangers, such as an un-signaled lane change or approaching another vehicle too quickly. According to GM research, the seat’s vibrations may direct driver attention to the location of a potential collision more quickly and accurately than audible alerts. Drivers have the option of selecting either audible or vibrating alerts.

Quieter, stronger, more aerodynamic

Quietness doesn’t only come from factors within the cabin. The 2014 Sierra features new aerodynamic measures that benefit fuel efficiency and reduce wind noise. Updated mirrors that reduce wind turbulence, triple-sealed inlaid doors, as well as roof and tailgate design features all help air flow smoothly and quietly over the Sierra. Additional sealing around the grille, headlamps and space between the cab and box are also designed to lower drag for the new trucks, along with new aerodynamic spats located in front of the rear wheels

Updates to Sierra’s body and chassis are designed to improve ride and handling, comfort and capability. The fully boxed frame uses high-strength steel and hydroforming to provide more strength and rigidity with less weight. New cab structures incorporate high-strength steel in the A-pillars, B-pillars, roof rails and rocker panels, while ultra-high-strength steel segments of the rocker panels provide added protection for shallow offset crashes.

Sierra’s aluminum hood saves approximately 17 pounds versus a comparable steel hood. At the rear, a roll-formed box is stronger, lighter and more durable than a traditional stamped steel box.

Sierra uses aluminum for some suspension components for additional rigidity and weight saving, and new lightweight wheels are paired with low-rolling-resistance tires in most applications. The tires, along with new shear-style and redesigned hydraulic cab mounts, are designed to help reduce noise and vibration in the cabin.

“Pickups aren’t just a tool for GMC owners – they’re part of their everyday lives, and Sierra needs to be as useful on the way to the movies as it is on the way to a job site,” said DiSalle. “The most important thing about the engineering behind this new truck is that it benefits owners in so many different ways.”

Attention to detail

GMC designers approached the exterior of the 2014 Sierra with respect for its predecessors, evolving its familiar shape while adding distinctive details like standard projector headlamps, available LED signature accent lighting and detailed new grilles. All Sierra models have chrome grille surrounds and premium black wheel arch moldings. Different trim levels feature chrome belt moldings, mirror caps and door handles, as well as unique wheel designs and grille details.

Other new features include available front Park Assist, in addition to the rear Park Assist already available, and a sliding rear window with a defroster.

Distinctive All-Terrain model

Sierra All-Terrain has all-new styling for 2014. It includes a unique exterior appearance with a painted grille and less chrome, and is available as a double cab or crew cab in a limited number of colors.

Standard equipment for Sierra All-Terrain includes the Z71 off-road suspension with monotube Rancho shocks, hill descent control, front recovery hooks, a transfer case shield and unique wheels and tires, along with an automatic locking rear differential that reacts in milliseconds in low-traction situations to improve safety and confidence on wet, snowy or muddy surfaces.

Sierra All Terrain is available exclusively with an ebony interior and with front bucket seats on SLE models. A carbon fiber-look seat accent is standard on SLT models.

OnStar details

Six months of OnStar Directions and Connections service is standard on Sierra. OnStar is the global leading provider of connected safety, security and mobility solutions and advanced information technology.

OnStar’s RemoteLink Mobile App allows smartphone users to control vehicle functions, access vehicle information and send directions directly to the vehicle. An opt-in service called FamilyLink allows subscribers to stay connected to loved ones by checking the location of their vehicle online or by signing up for vehicle location alerts.

GMC Sierra All Mountain Concept

We’re rather partial to the notion of a car – a wheeled vehicle designed for road usage – being fitted with tank tracks for use on snow. It’s a recipe that’s been used to strong effect by Nissan with the Juke Nismo RSnow concept that we drove on a not-very-frozen lake, and by the master of mechanical mayhem himself Ken Block in one of his earlier video stunts. Relive the off-piste lunacy here.

And now, digest the fact that GMC has utterly demolished these piffling offerings with the magnificent Sierra All Mountain Concept. The result of a union between a luxury SUV, a snowmobile, a tank and a quantity of terrible American light beer, we presume.

The Sierra All Mountain is effectively a Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab truck balanced on four separate miniature tracks. It’s been fitted with extra lights, bigger speakers and snowboard racks. It is powered by an engine that appears to have been designed for a cross-Channel ferry.

This next generation system features a higher resolution camera and display and the ability to tilt or zoom the view.
The redesigned Sierra Denali offers a full suite of available advanced safety features, along with exclusive chassis technologies such as Adaptive Ride Control.

"The heritage of the GMC brand is rooted in full-size trucks, of which the Sierra is our cornerstone, with our SLT and Denali models contributing 87 percent of our total crew cab sales," Aldred said. "The next generation Sierra caters to these unique customers who demand a premium, innovative truck that supports their professional and personal passions."

GMC just debuted a new version of the 2019 GMC Sierra called the “Elevation,” and not only is it damn good looking, but it also comes stock with an all-new 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, and can be optioned with an “X31" off-road package.

GMC already showed off one new variant of its 2019 Sierra since the model debuted in March as a Denali and SLT. And now there’s another: the 2019 GMC Sierra Elevation.

The big news, here, is that this double cab, two-wheel or four-wheel drive Sierra gets a standard 2.7-liter turbocharged engine (GMC doesn’t specify the cylinder count in its press release, but at 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft, it’s surely the same 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine going into the new Silverado) mated to an eight-speed automatic. Other available engine options include a 5.3-liter V8 bolted to an eight-speed and later, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel hooked to a 10-speed auto.

The more obvious ways that the Sierra Elevation is different than other Sierra trims are in the truck’s aesthetic elements. The Elevation has a unique grille surround, unique door handles, fancy bumpers, a black grille insert, black tow hooks, black side window trim and black 20-inch wheels.

The truck looks great in this single photo, and if optioned with an “X31 Off Road package,” it might actually be as tough as it looks, with the package including Rancho shocks, a locking rear differential, Hill Descent Control, skidplates, a two-speed transfer case, all-terrain tires, a “heavy-duty air filter,” and dual exhaust.

This new Elevation edition is similar to the outgoing Sierra Elevation, which GMC called a “new entry into the sport pickup truck market,” and which also offers a monochromatic exterior package with body-color bumpers front and rear, body color grille surrounds, body colored door handles and black recovery hooks.

So this new 2019 version isn’t a huge departure from the old Sierra Elevation trim, except now theres a 2.7-liter turbo four under the hood instead of a weak-sauce 4.3-liter V6. GMC says the Sierra Elevation will hit the market this fall.

Well I'm not a truck person... would never own one. But I like the way that one looks.

I am stuck for a few weeks with a new corporate $85000CA Denali 2500HD Duramax.

Near 8000lbs, 910lbs-ft of torque. 10.8mpgUS (22L/100km).. $150CA to fill it up.

I hate them. Why people keeps buying pick-ups so much is beyond me.

While I wouldn't want to daily a 3/4 ton diesel, there are worse way to get around than a Denali HD

The full-size truck market is booming and the players within that ultra-competitive segment just keep on getting bigger and better. At this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Chevrolet rolled out a new Silverado that finally brought that truck to a point of modernity. And, as our recent first drive confirmed, it did a damned fine job, too.

Of course GMC couldn't be far behind, and indeed the new 2019 Sierra 1500 was unveiled just a few months later. And now, we've driven that too. Whether you're looking for that unique mixture of posh and practicality of the Denali or perhaps something a bit more aggressive in the lifted AT4, GMC has a Sierra for you. Having driven them all, I can confidently say that they were worth the wait.

The 2019 GMC Sierra is wholly new from top to bottom, stem to stern, having grown a few inches overall but, more significantly, gained more than 3 inches of wheelbase. Despite this growth, the truck is up to 360 pounds lighter than its predecessor. That means a bigger truck with more room and cargo capacity, yet lighter weight for bolstered towing and handling.

Those weight savings come down to a variety of factors, including some aluminum body panels like doors and hood, but the most significant savings comes from an industry first: a carbon fiber bed. Yes, General Motors, a company that had a lot of fun poking holes in Ford's aluminum bed in the F-150(literally and figuratively), will offer what's called the CarbonPro bed on GMC Sierras. This tweak alone shaves 62 pounds off the weight of the truck while offering even more durability and of course corrosion resistance than the existing steel bed.

The other big innovation with a camelcase moniker is the optional MultiPro tailgate, which splits the standard tailgate in two, allowing each to be opened independently. What seemed like a gimmick to me on first glance turns out to be surprisingly useful, but more on that in a moment.

Driving all this will be one of four motors, on the top-shelf sitting GMC's 6.2-liter V8. It delivers 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque through a 10-speed automatic and, in the Sierra Denali, is expected to manage 15 mpg city and 21 highway. That rig will tow up to 9,300 pounds, but opt for the more work-focused Sierra SLT trim and that number soars to a whopping 12,100 pounds.

The other V8 is the 5.3-liter, with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft, and both this and its big brother offer a new generation of cylinder deactivation that, in theory, allow the engines to keep spinning on just one cylinder. Other options include a new, 2.7-liter, 310-horse turbo-four that replaces the old V6 and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel is coming as well. Efficiency figures for both of those choices have yet to be disclosed.

It isn't just the sheetmetal that's received a thorough once-over. The 2019 Sierra's interior takes a quantum leap forward with a bevvy of new tech toys and safety features that finally give this truck the smarts to match its brawn.

Last year's Sierra didn't even offer blind-spot monitoring, but now the truck offers that plus a host of other adaptive safety features like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure assist and enough cameras mounted on all angles to make parking this behemoth a breeze.

In the dashboard sits a touchscreen running GMC's latest flavor of IntelliLink, which we've seen re-skinned in various colors for various other General Motors properties. Regardless of dressing, it continues to be among the best, offering a simple but comprehensive experience and, most important, responsive performance. Best of all? Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported right out of the box.

Climb on up into the driver's seat and look forward and you'll see the Sierra's new heads-up display, which is bigger and wider than any I've seen on a car before. On here you'll of course get current speed, plus the current limit and even roll and pitch data from the inclinometer. Curiously, though, navigation information is not displayed there.

And the final new toy? It's GMC's latest digital rear-view monitor, an evolution of the tech we first saw in the Chevrolet Bolt EV that now offers a wider view and a much clearer image.

All that's bolstered by a slew of both USB Type-A and the newer Type-C ports, plus a 110 outlet and an optional wireless charging pad that not only kept my Galaxy Note 8 topped up during a lengthy drive, it kept it nice and cool, too.

While the new carbon bed and trick tailgate will rightfully get the most attention, those who trailer will find the new Sierra a very able companion. I had a chance to hitch up a boat trailer carrying a Zodiac boat and found the process to be very straightforward.

A lot of that comes down to that bevvy of cameras. When backing up, the Sierra showed the rear-view and extended a line showing the path of the hitch, making initial alignment easy. Then, when I got closer, I was able to toggle to a zoomed-in, top-down view of the ball itself, meaning I could see exactly when it was in-line.

After that I still had to do the hard work of lowering the hitch onto the ball and connecting the chains and all that, but the infotainment system on the Sierra can help there, too, displaying a custom checklist with images and animations to help if you're new to this sort of thing -- or are just forgetful as I increasingly am.

Once connected, the new Sierra trailering app enables you to test the lights on the trailer just by tapping a button, a process much quicker than calling on your significant other to stand behind the trailer and yell when the blinker comes on.

Finally, the 2019 Sierra can optionally be outfitted with a secondary TPMS receiver that slots in behind the rear license plate. From here, it can wirelessly detect trailer tire pressures and even temperatures, the kind of information that could save you from a high-speed blow-out and a very lengthy pit stop.

Once loaded, the Sierra's adaptive suspension will automatically adjust and enable you to even see behind the trailer with the use of a secondary, remote camera.

It's all perhaps a bit much, but as the sort who can sometimes get a little stressed while trailering, I can definitely see the appeal.

I spent most of a day crossing the beautiful roads outside St. John's, Newfoundland in a 2019 Sierra Denali, a top-shelf model with nearly all the literal bells and figurative whistles, including that big 6.2-liter lump of a V8. Its effortless torque surges the empty truck forward with aplomb, and while in default trim I found its sound to be a little unremarkable, the optional sport exhaust fixes that nicely -- at the cost of some drone.

My initial impression behind the wheel of the Denali was one of composure, a hallmark of the Sierra and, indeed, the Silverado. While you wouldn't confuse it for an S-Class, the Sierra handles uneven pavement and unexpected potholes without drama and offers a clean, comfortable cruise on the highway. You could cover big, big miles in the heated and cooled front seats without much discomfort.

And you won't be missing much from the rear seats, either. That extra legroom back there means the Crew Cab version of the truck can properly handle a crew of any size. Or, fold up the rear seats and there's plenty of room for bicycles, large dogs, polar bears or whatever else you're traveling with.

For whatever won't fit in the cab, that MultiPro tailgate really does make filling the bed easy. With both portions folded down and the internal lip extended, it turns into a wide, sturdy step that made it mighty easy to climb on in while handling a bale of hay. Flip up the inner tailgate and that extended lip turns into an integrated bed extender. Or, close the tailgate and extend the inner bit and you have a passable workshelf.

It works well and it's the kind of thing that we'll surely see copied on other trucks in the near future, but for now you can only get it on Sierra. Were I in the market I'd surely be ticking that box.

The 2019 GMC Sierra, especially in Denali trim, is hard not to like. Sure, its styling is perhaps conservative, but given its market and the varied reception to Silverado, that seems like a wise move to me. It drives cleanly, hauls and tows capably and has the smarts to be competitive in the marketplace.

But all that will come at a price, of course. The 2019 GMC Sierra starts at $29,600, but if you want all the toys you've been reading about expect to pay more. The off-road focused AT4, with its 2-inch lift and Rancho tubes, starts at $53,200 while the Denali is $54,700 and up.

Spendy? Yes indeed, but last year the average Denali buyer dropped a whopping $55,656, and with all these fun new options boxes to tick in 2019, that number is only going up.

Wow that step in the tailgate is smart. No stupid step dangling from the corner of your bumper.

An interesting take on the tailgate step. Definitely looks more usable than the Ford version, though I shudder to think if you were standing on the full tailgate & the release failed/opened for the half section

This giant hellbeast of a truck is basically the same as the 2020 Chevy Silverado HD that launched late last year, but it doesn’t have thatgodawful face. You know what I mean. Meet the new GMC Sierra HD, which on looks alone is the big General Motors truck you want.

It comes with the same massive 6.6-liter Duramax Diesel V8 with 910 lb-ft of torque shoved through an Allison 10-speed automatic. This is a truck built for numbers, and while it hasn’t been certified yet, the towing capacity of this new whale should be north of 30,000 pounds.

“We took every opportunity to visually express the strength and capability that lies beneath the surface,” says Matt Noone, director of GMC exterior design. “The elevated hood line, the strong shoulders, the striking front grille — these cues communicate the strength and performance that have been engineered and built into each and every Sierra Heavy Duty.”

The GMC version of the HD adds 15 surround view cameras to make sure you can hitch up without a problem. It also adds cargo bed side steps in front of the wheel openings, and a convoluted multi-stage tailgate as standard.

Three different packages are available with varying degrees of luxury. The Standard Sierra HD, and the high-lux Sierra HD Denali are basically what you expect, but AT4 HD package is new. When you opt for the AT4, you get a locking rear diff, off-road ready suspension package, Rancho shocks, factory skid plates, all-terrain Michelins, and hill descent control. Visually, it’ll have dark chrome instead of that bright stuff.

The new Sierra HD will go on sale late this summer in 2500HD and 3500HD guise with either single or dual rear wheel options. Pricing and tow capacity of the Flint, Michigan-assembled trucks will be announced as production nears.

Definitely a huge improvement over the eyesore that is the Silverado HD.
As far as a daily, my dad more-or-less daily's his '09 Duramax (also has an '04 Silverado & a motorcycle). But, they live in the 'country' and he somewhat regularly uses it as it's meant to be used.

To regularly tow more than 11000lbs? WTF is he moving around?

Tows more than he'd want to pull with his (300k miles) 1/2 ton. Plus it gets much better MPG with a load than the 1/2 ton.
Plus, my sister gets her license this year, so the 1/2 ton goes to her & the Duramax splits DD-duty with the motorcycle for my dad.

https://www.tfltruck.com/2019/03/201...boss-does-not/

Thanks to info posted on the GMC US build and price configurator, we now know that the Sierra AT4 will be offered with the upcoming 3.0-liter diesel engine.

Under the list of options for the AT4, the build and price tool lists the “available 3.0L Duramax Turbo Diesel engine with 10-speed automatic transmission (late availability).”

Based on newly uncovered info on the AT4’s brother truck, the Chevy Silverado Trail Boss, on the Chevy Canada build and price tool, it looks like the Trail Boss does not get the diesel option.

The AT4, like Trail Boss, comes with a two-inch lift, unique wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires, Rancho shocks, skid plates and the G80 rear locking differential.

The AT4 can also be had with the 6.2-liter V8, yet another engine option that has been held back from Silverado Trail Boss so far. Pricing for the diesel option still isn’t included, and when you do add it to a truck on the GMC Canada configurator, a message advises you to “see dealer for pricing,” so we don’t know how much these trucks will cost yet.

In the US, the AT4 starts at about $51,300 with the 5.3-liter V8 as a double cab standard bed, while adding the big V8 drives the price up to just over $53,890. In Canada, the AT4 starts at about $55,500, while the 6.2-liter brings it up to $58,390.

The diesel will likely end up being an even more expensive option, which is why it’s being kept in the GMC brand, but it would be nice to see the Silverado Trail Boss expands its lineup to include at least the new turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder. Although the 6.2 would be better….just saying Chevrolet.

V6 & AFM V8 Dropped

https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/03...d-5-3l-afm-v8/

Currently, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 offer six different powerplants. However, looking ahead to the 2022 model year, two of those powerplants will be dropped.

According to a recent GM presentation during the 2021 Work Truck Show, the naturally aspirated
4.3L V6 LV3gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine will be dropped from the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 lineup for the 2022 model year.

GM Authority was the first to question the longterm prospects for the 4.3L V6 LV3. Back in December, we compared the LV3 to the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, illustrating how the four-cylinder L3B bests the V6 LV3 in a variety of metrics, including power, torque, fuel efficiency, max trailering, payload, and 0-to-60 mph acceleration. While the transmissions used with each powerplant (eight-speed automatic for the L3B and six-speed automatic for the LV3) play a role here, there’s no question that the turbocharged engine and high-tech valvetrain are the defining factor.

As a reminder, the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV3 is rated at 285 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 305 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm, while the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 is rated at 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm.

Meanwhile, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B is rated at 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. Other options include the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84, which, like the L82, produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. However, the L84 features Dynamic Fuel Management, as opposed to the L82’s Active Fuel Management.

The rest of the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 powerplant lineup includes the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87, which is rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax, which is rated at 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

Embossed and laser-etched across the interior are a number of topographical maps of the summit of Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America. These maps can be found laser-etched on to the open-pore Paldao wood on the front passenger-side dashboard, in the full-grain leather on the front and back of the front seats, rear seat and door panels, as well as on the exterior fender vent badges.

When it comes to propulsion, the Sierra Denali Ultimate's standard engine is GMC's 420-hp, 6.2L V-8 and it is matched with a 10-speed automatic transmission featuring Electronic Precision Shift. Four-wheel drive, with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case, is standard.

Enhanced version of Super Cruise hands-free driver-assistance technology and more

Super Cruise is standard on GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate with a three-year subscription to enable the functionality and available on Sierra Denali. It is the industry's first true hands-free driver-assistance technology for compatible roads, and it can be used on more than 200,000 miles (320,000 km) of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada.

Trailering-capable Super Cruise adds to Sierra's class-leading roster of trailering assistance technologies, which also include up to 14 available camera views, including Transparent Trailer, GCW Alert, in-vehicle trailering app and more. The new GCW Alert will signal when the maximum weight the Sierra can safely carry is exceeded and signal when the vehicle may be overloaded.

The 2022 Sierra also offers additional safety and driver-assistance features with trailering in mind, including Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, which accounts for the length of the trailer when changing lanes and enhancements to Adaptive Cruise Control to enable use while trailering.

Additionally, GMC Pro Safety is standard and includes Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Following Distance Indicator and IntelliBeam automatic high beams.

Sierra AT4X: the new peak in premium off-roading

The all-new Sierra AT4X continues GMC's efforts to break ground in the premium truck category. The Sierra AT4X is a balanced execution that delivers advanced off-road capability when called upon without compromising the on-road comfort, tech, towing, and payload capability expected from a premium pickup.

Highlights include:
  • Standard 6.2L V-8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Unique Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers
  • Unique springs that, with the Multimatic dampers, increase maximum front and rear suspension travel by 50 mm and 25 mm, respectively, compared with the standard AT4 suspension
  • Two-speed transfer case, with selectable modes for different off-road conditions - including Terrain Mode, which allows one-pedal rock crawling
  • Front and rear e-locking differentials, a combination not offered by any other competitor in its class
  • Specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations
  • Unique, larger steel transfer case shield
  • 18-inch black wheels with LT265/70R18 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac Mud-Terrain tires

The functional features are complemented with a unique, luxury-focused AT4X Obsidian Rush interior that balances the off-roader's capability with comfort and convenience. Elevated design - inside and out

In addition to the distinctive design cues of the Sierra Denali Ultimate and Sierra AT4X, the vast majority of the 2022 Sierra lineup is elevated with styling and design updates, inside and out. Exterior highlights include:
  • Revised front bumper, fascia, grille designs and finishes on each trim

  • Animated lighting sequences that activate when approaching, starting or walking away from the truck
  • New wheel designs on SLT and Denali
  • Three new exterior colors (extra cost): Titanium Rush Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic and Desert Sand Metallic
What hasn't changed with the 2022 Sierra's exterior are the professional-grade features that underpin its capability, including the available, industry-first six-function MultiPro tailgate, the available CarbonPro carbon fiber composite bed, which provides more short-bed cargo bed volume - 63.9 cubic feet - than any other competitor.

Inside, GMC designers set apart Sierra from the competition with unique, new interiors on SLE, Elevation and SLT trims, as well as unique premium interior designs for AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate trims. There are also new color and stitching designs throughout, with more premium materials throughout the cabin, further elevating the Sierra's premium look and feel.

The centerpiece of the 2022 Sierra's redesigned interior (SLE trim and above) is an all-new and customizable 13.4-inch-diagonal horizontal touchscreen, along with a 12.3-inch-diagonal digital, configurable instrument cluster. Together, they provide users with incredible levels of personalization and intuitive engagement, starting the moment the driver slides behind the wheel and the driver information center comes to life.

Those personalization options allow customers to prioritize their views and even have two areas of information, to display navigation and trailering details simultaneously, for example, with the option to prioritize one over the other. Or, the customer can choose full-screen navigation, or entertainment or other options. It's all about enabling a more personalized experience that enhances comfort and convenience.

Additionally, the Sierra comes with Google built-in compatibility (standard on all trims except Pro), with three years of service included with AT4 and Denali trims. With it, many of a user's favorite phone features are available in the vehicle through the infotainment system, including Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play. With Google Assistant, drivers can use their voice to get directions, play their favorite podcasts, control vehicle functions and more, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Google built-in is compatible with both Apple and Android devices, working with and complementing existing connectivity features such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as available Amazon Alexa (standard on SLE trim and above).

Additional Sierra technologies include available multicolor 15-inch-diagonal Head-Up Display, which along with the 13.4-inch-diagonal horizontal touchscreen and 12.3-inch-diagonal digital, instrument cluster, take the total of available digital display space in the new Sierra to more than 40 diagonal inches, each helping provide an engaging, customizable and comprehensive driving experience.

GMC is trying to steal Chevy’s Silverado ZR2 Bison thunder with the release of the 2023 Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition.

The off-road focused pickup is based on the rugged Sierra 1500 AT4X and features a number of components sourced from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV).

In order to transform the model into the “most off-road capable factory Sierra 1500 ever,” the truck has been equipped with heavy duty steel bumpers that feature integrated recovery points as well as a winch capability up front. They’re joined by five skid plates and 18-inch AEV Salta wheels, which feature a gloss black finish as well as a recessed valve system that provides added protection from rocks while off-roading. Speaking of the wheels, they’re wrapped in 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.

The changes don’t stop there as the truck features an updated grille and front fascia to accommodate the new bumper and larger tires. Buyers will also find gloss black door handles and a black accent on the tailgate. Customers also have the option of ordering rock rails for even more protection.

Thanks to the updates, the approach angle increases by more than 27% to 32.5 degrees. Departure and breakover angles also improve slightly to 23.4 and 23.0 degrees, respectively. Furthermore, the truck boasts 11.2 inches (284 mm) of ground clearance, which is an increase of 0.4 inches (10 mm).

The features build on the AT4X’s already impressive list of off-road equipment that includes front and rear e-locking differentials, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and a Terrain mode that allows for one-pedal driving. They’re joined by a standard 6.2-liter V8 engine pumping out 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque.

Putting the off-road equipment aside, the AEV Edition features an Obsidian Rush interior with heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats as well as ash wood trim and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system. Buyers will also find a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.4-inch infotainment system with built-in Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play. There are also a handful of special touches including embroidered AEV headrests and all-weather floor liners.

Besides introducing the AT4X AEV Edition, GMC announced the regular Sierra 1500 AT4X will be offered with “AEV-inspired enhancements.” These include a winch-capable front bumper, a boron steel front skid plate, and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.

There’s no word on pricing at this point, but the models will be “available later in the 2023 model year.”
