"GM to make two safety features standard"

NEW ORLEANS - General Motors Corp. plans to put two safety features _ OnStar in-vehicle communications service and electronic stability control _ in all of its vehicles by the end of 2010, the company said Sunday.

GM believes it would be the first automaker to make both features standard across its entire fleet, a spokesman said.

The world's largest automaker said OnStar will be included on all vehicles in 2007. Stability control will be standard on all GM sport utility vehicles and vans by the end of 2007 and on all cars and trucks by the end of 2010.

Isn't there a monthly fee for On-Star?

You'd figure abs would have been one of the two, guess not.

Yes. You get the first few months or maybe the first year for free but you have to pay for it after that.

That would have been the smart thing to do. GM isn't know for being smart all the time...

Can you still purchase vehicles without ABS?

Yup. Chevy Cavalier doesn't have ABS in the base models, neither do the Civics or Corollas.

GM will wave the monthly fee for the first year - after that it will cost you.

I dunno - Honda's Safety for Everybody promises ABS, Side Airbags/Side Curtains and (VSC in all light duty trucks/suv's/minivans) by the end of 2006. Once again, seems like GM's a bit slow to react....however havn't heard anything from Toyota or Ford yet, so we'll see.

On-Star as a "safety" feature is :lame:
GM should try ABS, side airbags, curtain airbags...etc.

If look at the real small print on GM web sites' vehicles description of On-Star you'll see that most current cars will have to be "upgraded" cause the On-Star system now relies on the analog cell band which will be turned off at the end of 2007.
I'd never pay for built in gadgets that could be so easily made useless.
