GM has been busy revamping its powertrain lineup. From fuel sippers to turbocharged performers, the automaker is boasting 19 new or revamped engines and transmissions, mostly available for the 2007 model year.

Among the highlights:

>> The first GM V6 engine (3.9-liter) with its fuel-saving Active Fuel Management (AFM) cylinder deactivation technology will launch in the 2007 Chevy Impala. GM also offers AFM on its 5.3-liter V8s. By 2008, the automaker estimates it will have two million AFM-equipped models on the road. AFM-equipped engines will be available in 15 GM models for 2007.

>> A new GM hybrid system for the Saturn Vue Green Line, which improves fuel economy by 20 percent, the automaker says.

>> The 260-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injection Ecotec four-cylinder powering the Solstice GXP, Saturn Sky Red Line and Opel GT. Its 130 horsepower per liter is the highest of any production engine in GM history, according to the automaker.

>> New six-speed automatic transmission variants for front-, rear- and all-wheel drive applications launch in nearly 40 global models in 2006 and 2007.

>> And in its continuing push to push E85, the automaker will also offer 14 models capable of running on ethanol for 2007. The company boasts nearly 2 million flex-fuel models already on North American roads.
