If Genesis had it to do over again, it’s safe to say that its first three models would not have been a trio of sedans. The Genesis G80, G90, and G70 certainly have their merits, but when so many luxury-car intenders are shopping SUVs exclusively, the complete absence of such a vehicle in the lineup has prevented the brand from even getting consideration from a huge swath of the marketplace. Now, at last, comes salvation in the form of the GV80, the brand’s first SUV.

The arrival of the 2021 Genesis GV80 is such a momentous event that everything leading up to it feels like a preamble. This is the vehicle that will redefine Genesis, and that starts with its look. One upside of the GV80’s late arrival is that it skipped the milquetoast styling phase that the other models went through. The massive shield grille with the chain-link texture; the twin-slit motif seen in the headlights, the side repeaters, and the taillights; and the gently arching shoulder line all will be seen in other models — and are already in the newly redesigned G80 and the upcoming second-generation G70.
The GV80’s design makes it appear much lower and longer than the competing BMW X5 though the Bavarian is just an inch taller. The Genesis also will face off against the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, the Lincoln Aviator, and the Acura MDX, among many others. Like the BMW, Benz, and Lincoln, the Genesis features a north-south engine orientation and uses an RWD-based layout, a fact telegraphed by the long hood and the cab-rearward design.

Two engines are on offer: a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four and a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. The four-cylinder turbo boasts output more often seen with V6 engines: 310 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque (both figures shade the GLE 350’s 2.0-liter turbo-four). The boosted V6 is good for 375 hp and 391 lb-ft, beating the six-cylinder X5 (335 hp, 330 lb-ft) but not the Aviator (400 hp, 415 lb-ft). Both engines work with an eight-speed automatic. Missing from the lineup are the sort of high-performance or hybrid powertrain choices offered by most of the aforementioned competitors.

Genesis serves up the GV80 a total of 10 different ways, and there are no factory options. The 2.5T can be had in Standard, Advanced, and Prestige trims, each with RWD or AWD. The AWD-only 3.5T offers the same three trims — each with a bit more content than their 2.5T equivalents — as well as a fourth 3.5T variant, the Advanced+, which is the only GV80 with a third-row seat.

The limited availability of the third-row seat could be a hindrance in the marketplace, but when you attempt to climb into the third row, it’s clear that three-row packaging was not a priority. Push a button, and the second-row seat scoots forward, but the gap between seats and the wheel arch is tiny, making it difficult to squeeze through. The third-row cushion is also low to the floor and yet headroom is at a premium. And as we discovered in our first, non-driving review of the GV80, luggage space behind the third seat is extremely limited. The best that can be said is that power folding is included.

The accommodations in the second row are a much different story. There, a 6-footer can easily sit behind a similar-sized driver, with plenty of head- and legroom. And check the amenities: side window shades (on all but 2.5T RWD Standard), seat heating (2.5T Prestige, 3.5T Advanced and Prestige), and in the 3.5T Prestige, seat cooling, power side window shades, power folding, and eight-way power seat adjustment.

Up front, the driver looks out over a long hood, and that combined with a relatively low overall vehicle height makes for a pleasant, almost passenger-car feel. A power steering column is standard, though a greater range of fore-aft adjustment would be welcome. All Prestige models and the 3.5T Advanced come with adjustable side bolsters and seat cushion extenders as well as a massaging Active Bolster Seat.

The top-spec 3.5T Prestige model has a digital instrument cluster with a 3D effect, but its appearance is less dramatic than it sounds. With the digital cluster, the Blind Spot View Monitor, which shows a camera feed looking rearward down the side of the car when the turn signal is activated, briefly replaces the digital speedometer (left side) or tachometer (right side). This is one of the GV80's few elements obviously shared with a Hyundai, but it's an awesomely helpful one, and in fact an enhancement of the system we named our 2019 Autoblog Technology of the Year. Lesser models with the Blind Spot View Monitor show the feed (either left or right) in the tachometer, which like the information center between the gauges is digitally rendered.

The GV80’s showpiece interior tech feature, though, is the 14.5-inch touchscreen that’s standard on all models. The screen has an unusual long, shallow shape, and can show a single element or two elements with the second to the extreme right. Graphics are up-to-the-minute modern, and the sharpness of the feeds from the available multi-view camera is excellent. Naturally, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, though not in their wireless forms.

The shape and location of the screen put it close to the line of sight, but the far end is a reach for the driver. That issue is remedied by the presence of a console-mounted click-wheel although its design is less user-friendly than BMW’s iDrive controller. The wheel is flush mounted and has a concave shape, not unlike an old-school iPod. It provides some separation of feel from the dial shifter just aft of it and the smaller drive-mode dial just to the right, but turning the inset click-wheel is awkward. Similarly, jogging the click-wheel up, down, forward, or back is harder to do than with a surface-mounted version. It also has a touch-sensitive center section that responds to swipe or pinch motions.

Outside of the click-wheel, there are standard knobs for the temperature settings, with touch-sensitive buttons for the remainder of the climate controls. There are thumbwheels for volume and tuning, and while it’s great to have non-touchscreen controls for those functions, traditional knobs would be preferable.

The vibe Genesis is going for here is serene minimalism and, aesthetically, it certainly works. The dash is largely bereft of switchgear, with the major elements instead being the wide touchscreen and the dash vents that are presented as a single unit spanning the space. The center stack is integrated into the console, which has a floating appearance. Even the odd-looking steering wheel groups its buttons into the silver-finished areas, similar to the arrangement on the console. Nearly all surfaces are soft-touch with padded surfaces on the console's sides and on the lower door panels, although leather is not included until you reach the mid-grade trims. And the two-tone color treatments add interest, particularly the striking green-and-brown combination.

Aiding the cause of serenity is the "Sounds of Nature" function, borrowed from Hyundai, which plays various tranquil noises over the audio system while an accompanying image appears on the vast display. And so it was that we set out from Manhattan listening to the sounds of a crackling fire. We might have picked Rainy Day, but since it already was raining, that seemed superfluous.

We started off in the 3.5T in full-boat Prestige trim. All 3.5T trims come with adaptive dampers that can adjust their firmness based on information from a forward-looking camera. On the cobblestone streets of the Meatpacking District and the patches of broken pavement on the West Side Highway, the GV80 displayed good bump isolation, slightly better than the standard-suspension version we would drive later. Both variants seem firmly sprung, with tight control of body motions, although the 3.5T is still able to deliver a plush ride — the standard-sprung version, slightly less so. The vehicles’ structure felt solid, devoid of creaks and squeaks even in these early production examples. The GV80’s precise steering engendered confidence, most notably on the narrow lanes of the winding Saw Mill River Parkway, where the metal guardrail is only inches from the edge lines. The steering is pleasantly weighted, neither over-boosted nor unnecessarily heavy, though it lacks a strong sense of on-center. Overall, this is a highly agreeable chassis setup, and one without a dizzying array of configurability. The various drive modes don’t have a huge impact on the proceedings beyond the Sport mode’s aggressive throttle tip-in and its preference for lower gear ratios.

The turbo V6 is punchy, and throttle response is well-metered. Acceleration is strong but the GV80 doesn’t feel overly powerful. Genesis says that among those who’ve registered interest so far, the 3.5T is proving the more popular choice. For its part, the 2.5-liter makes impressive power for a turbo-four, and it’s certainly up to the job, although it demands a bit more patience accelerating up to freeway speeds or executing a two-lane pass. The biggest downside to the turbo-four is an engine note that’s gravelly under full-throttle acceleration. With either engine, fuel economy is just average for the segment. EPA estimates for the 2.5T are 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway (RWD or AWD), which is on par with the GLE 350. For the 3.5T, the figures are 18/23 mpg, a few ticks behind the X5 xDrive40i.

All GV80s boast an impressively long list of driver assists, some with expanded capabilities. The forward-collision warning, for instance, can alert the driver to approaching cross traffic at an intersection or of an approaching vehicle when making a left turn. The driver can also guide the GV80 remotely into a parking spot — not just forward or back, as in the Hyundai Sonata, but into a parallel or perpendicular space as well.

The Highway Driving Assist lane-centering feature is standard on the GV80 and, as it does in various Hyundai models, this system is able to smoothly maintain a position at the center of the lane. This latest version, HDA II, adds the ability to autonomously execute a signaled lane change (a la similar systems at Mercedes and BMW), but the system seemed to lack the confidence to execute it. Of the dozen or so times I tried it on rainy-but-well-marked I-87, only twice did it perform the action. Other times, the formerly green indicator graphic suddenly switched to white, indicating it couldn’t see the lane markings well enough to self-steer.

The long list of included features, such as Highway Driving Assist, is the main pillar of the GV80’s value story rather than ultra-low pricing. The GV80 may start at an attractive $49,925 (including destination) for the 2.5T, which is some five grand less than a GLE 350, but add AWD and the GV80 jumps to $55,675 narrowing the gap with a GLE 350 4Matic to less than $2,000. The reason for the GV80’s big AWD price jump is that Genesis packs a bunch of other features in with AWD, such as a panoramic glass sunroof, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, rear side sunshades, wireless device charging, and digital key in the standard version, effectively making the AWD versions a separate, higher trim level.

The GV80 3.5T at $60,175, is similarly a couple grand below an X5 xDrive40i but a several thousand dollars above an Aviator. The GV80 tops out at $71,975 for the 3.5T Prestige, and that’s with the whole kit and caboodle, including soft-close doors, Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and the 3D digital cluster. You can find a full breakdown of each trim level's features, specs and pricing here.

With its rich feature content, appealing design and solid driving experience, the GV80 should provide a pretty solid base on which to build a luxury brand. And while Genesis is not abandoning sedans — the redesigned G80 shortly follows the GV80 to market — the brand’s next new addition will be another SUV, the smaller GV70. Lesson learned.

these are low quality products. Honda/Acura does not need to learn anything from them.
no wonder they want to escape to overweigh electric vehicles.

Hyundai Motor, Kia to Take $2.9 Billion Hit on Engine Problems

(Bloomberg) -- South Korea’s two biggest automakers are taking a 3.36 trillion won ($2.9 billion) earnings hit because of costs related to a 2019 settlement of a U.S. class-action lawsuit linked to alleged engine defects. Hyundai Motor Co. is setting aside 2.1 t

Hopefully the GV80 Sport, or whatever they end up calling it, gets a nicer looking steering wheel.
Those 2-spoke wheels rarely look good.

$50k base may be a bit high...

For comparison (base MSRP):
GLE$55k
X5: $60k
Q5/7: $44k/$55k
Aviator: $52k
MDX: $45k
QX50/60: $38k/$45k

Seems to fall right about in the middle on base MSRP.

Keep in mind the $60K X5 is for the xDrive40i, which is comparable to the model one-above the base for all the other automakers, so it's not exactly apples-to-apples with that one.

Yah but we are talking about Genesis here.. or Hyundai... you are not going to get an apple to apple comparison with BMW and Mercedes in the consumer market.
That is why their MSRP should reflect on that. I think Acura priced the MDX right.

More features with great looks at based with noticeable lower MSRP = Telluride
Less or similar features at base with noticeable lower MSRP = winner
More features at similar MSRP = meh
More features at same or higher MSRP = Death.

This GV80 is atleast $10k overpriced for 4 cylinder engine. The top V6T model maximum $55K all it can command as MDX hybrid is much faster with better handling vehicle than that.

Genesis also opened dealer ship in Richmond California. The lowest price area in whole SF bay. I sill want to Yeh to show up to just compared Acura/Honda real estate with it.

sales hours are long compared to Acura. They are trying every bit to be cheap Acura wanna be. there is still 2019 inventory.

The top trim of 2.5T model comes with 22inch wheel/tire combo. and cost $65K. It should have been 19inch. The brand is totally dysfunctional trying to compete in every segment.

They also have several recalls. that maybe reason for such slow roll out. The design is already a year old.

I agree, I don't want 22" wheels, nor do I want all that chrome.
While both are fairly easily remedied, I'd prefer the option from the factory.

Is all that chrome just a top trim gimmick or on all of them?

looks like all the trims same looking. Chrome is in big grill and lower bumper. The lights should have been smoked.
thats the whole reason of Acura Aspec models to make chrome less vehicles.

Reminds me o the downward speed in the early Porsche 944s. But, that was out of necessity, as the steering wheel would've blocked the numbers if it was upward/traditionally swept.

you cannot judge from video the quality of build. it is just too many lights and buttons.
It is much lower quality vehicle. There Edmunds long term test on its Kia cousin. Which cannot match Honda Passport efficiency and smoothness of engine despite Passport much taller vehicle.
Honda has that hidden engineering talent. thats not visible.

I just doubt this GV80 is much more competent effort that is way overpriced for its refinement and capability.

https://www.edmunds.com/kia/tellurid...oad-test/After having my parents in town for a visit, I had a chance to experience the Telluride with a consistent load of 5-6 people. The extra weight makes the lack of low-end torque much more apparent (peak torque comes in at a lofty 5200 rpm) which means you have to poke the accelerator harder than you want.

You can compensate for this a bit by switching to 'Sport' drive mode which ramps up the accelerator response some, but it also unfornately delays upshifts, both of which negatively impact fuel economy." — Jonathan Elfalan, senior manager, vehicle testing

Loaded with perhaps more poundage than the Oregon trip, the MDX never struggled with all that weight at altitude. Likewise, Utah's 80-mph speed limits were a non-issue, even when combined with numerous intermediate climbs over the 6,500-foot passes that littered the route from the Arizona border to our hotel halfway up Utah.

We just had to be at GVWR or above. But the steering never got light or swimmy at speed. Strong crosswinds didn't make a dent, either. And the fully loaded MDX made all the right moves when the road went to spaghetti in the mountains, just as it had in the even more sinuous canyons in Oregon.

Throughout, the rear suspension never once touched down to the point where my third-row passenger noticed. This includes a long stretch of aging and pockmarked narrow two-lane roads we took though the Mojave Desert Preserve on the return trip, a shortcut to avoid the crush of an exceptionally bad example of Sunday afternoon Vegas-to-L.A. traffic. These were old-school desert roads, the kind built with countless roller-coaster dips instead of bridges and culverts, with trailer-hitch scars in the depressions to prove it. Even though I was rushing, the MDX passed with flying colors.

um... Kia Cousin? you mean the one that you have to pay $3000 over MSRP just to get one? That one?
BTW: 1 is FWD and AWD V6 and GV80 is RWD and AWD V6TT....

and you make it sound like 5-6 people wont make any difference in the Passport or MDX

It is pretty funny you are comparing a loaded test with 5-6 people vs. a mountain drive with 1 person

The meaning of cousin mean that it is coming from same R&D pool and management structure that consistenly produce subpar products.
RWD with oversize body will be even more inefficient and will have refinement issue with oversize wheels and tires.

I am not sure who pay for these MSRP. There comparably equiped prices lower so net lease rates comparable. loaded version of Honda Pilot goes for $50K. so even with discount it only comes to comparable equiped.
regardless these are initial hype long term downward trend of Korea brands will continue as more complex technology long term warranty costs mounts.

Did you miss this part about MDX? and that was 2014 model.
Last weekend's Utah blast took place on freeways posted at 75 and 80 mph. The entire trip was a steady climb up onto a plateau to our base of operations that sat above 5,000 feet. Once there we climbed a 9,800-foot pass to spend some time at an outdoor area that's nestled up at 8,600 feet. Five fully-formed adults were spread across the MDX's three rows, with our luggage piled on top of the folded unoccupied half of the third-row seat.

Any idea of what the tow rating of this thing will be? Guessing it'll be the same as the Telluride/Palisade but didn't know if they shared it yet or not.

I dont think it will be that much different than a similar V6/I6 Turbo SUV...

It says 3rd row seats are only on V6T model. This vehicle is too expensive. Too heavy for 4cylinder engine with out AWD.

But despite calm conditions during our test, there was a fair amount of wind noise at highway speeds.
All in all, the base powertrain is a competent setup. The big four-cylinder's 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque adroitly manage the GV80's weight (4,707 pounds for the rear-drive Prestige we tested).
The multi-link suspension (front and rear) hides small bumps and performs well over washboard surfaces, but bigger potholes send an unpleasant shudder through the body, even with the 2.5T Prestige's smaller 20-inch wheels (the 3.5T Prestige wears 22-inch rollers).

So probably 5k-7k lbs. obamanotbad.jpg

This could be a contender. I want to like the MDX but feel that the infotainment would drive me batty in short order. I wish they'd just do a stupid touch screen.

Yah but there is a price gap between the 2 on top trim... at least on paper.

I have a feeling that they will provide huge discount on the top trims. I mean come on, how many do they expect to sell at $70k....

on 20 inch tires it got 16mpg. The car is extremely inefficient. rolling start 5-60mph is slow relative to engine power.

After reading that review, this thing is heading to the top of my list of cars to check out.

Still find it interesting that they don't have a digital cluster on the lower trim levels.

a 4700 lbs SUV can do 5-60 in 6 secs flat is not slow... It is probably way faster than the MDX...

It does 1/4 miles under 14 secs... That is faster than your freaking TLX V6

It's really nice to have along with all the driving aids. It's not a deal breaker for me but it's surprising that they didn't include that low hanging fruit into every model. Can't imagine it's more expensive...

It is not necessarily about the cost. But they have to reserve some stuff to justify the cost of the higher trims... Similar to BMW or other luxury brand...

Fair, but there are plenty of other items to justify that cost already IMO. In any case, a digital cluster isn't all that novel in the modern age anyway which is why it surprised me for what they are trying to do with this thing.

Yah that is why they include all those for a price of $4000 premium or Executive Package

But the ones in the GV80 i would assume is way more customizable and advanced than the free digital clusters that you get from Civic, or the Econ Brand...
