Interior is still shit...don't like the couple of exterior changes I see. Pretty sad that in the face of stiff competition from the Dodge and Chevy, this is what Ford comes up with.

So you guys feel that the new interior is worse than the previous interior? Overall sure, it may not be "the best", but for as much as we knock the domestics and imports, they all have to try to make progress. I guess I just see that they finally made some (a little) progress towards developing a better looking interior.

We're not comparing one manufacturer to another, not one car to another another. Does this look better than the last gen? Yes, IMHO.

The interior looks marginally better; therefore, it still sucks.

I think this is what would amount to be Ford's MMC, minor interior and exterior changes and a few things here and there. Pony cars tend to have a longer life span anyway. The interior is marginally better.... at least now it doesn't look like it was designed with a ruler.

and if anything, the base Mustang/GT would have a solid axle rear because its cheaper, and there would be a package called the Cobra package, which would have IRS. We all know how that panned out, 03-04 Cobra anyone? Incredibly stout iron block, and independent rear axles - that's just asking for trouble. Every non-stock SVT Cobra owner I've talked to is either contemplating or has a solid axle swap.

Basically, most Mustang owners are fine with solid rear axles.

This interior looks a more defined/refined version of the previous. That being said, it not leaps and bounds better.

Press release...

Roof options: Segment-first, factory-installed glass roof option now available on both the V-6 and GT models.
Added extras: The "Premium" array now includes ambient lighting, satin aluminum instrument panel trim, interior upgrades and SIRIUS® Satellite Radio.
Style selections: "Bullitt" and "Warriors in Pink" packages continue in 2009.

Ford Mustang, the country's best-selling sports car for 22 consecutive years and one of the auto industry's most successful nameplates ever, celebrates its 45th anniversary with a new panoramic glass roof option that opens the world to pony-car enthusiasts from Maine to Maui and all points between. The segment first, factory-installed glass roof is available as a $1,995 option on Mustang V-6 and GT models.

"Our new panoramic glass roof will allow owners to enjoy the outdoors year-round from the comfort of their Mustang," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president for Global Product Development. "It's one more feature that sets Mustang apart from the competition."

Three Roof Choices - Top That!

The glass roof joins the coupe and convertible to give Mustang customers three roof choices. It also addresses the fact that 62 percent of buyers in the sports car segment are interested in a sunroof or moonroof on their next vehicle, according to J.D. Power and Associates research. Mustang's new roof allows customers to let the sun shine in for half the price of moving up from a coupe to a convertible.

While allowing occupants an unrestricted view of the world above and around them, the special tinted, reflective glass reduces energy used by the vehicle's air conditioning system by 20 percent and also protects the interior fabric from fading and deteriorating. A manually operated roller blind allows owners to block the light on bright days.

Noise, vibration and harshness are controlled in the cabin with a layer of sound absorbent vinyl sandwiched within the special glass.

The glass-roof Mustang is built like the coupe and has been developed to maintain the structural integrity of the car.

"We want to offer this feature to customers while maintaining the quality and safety of the vehicle that we've been recognized externally for," said Paul Randle, Mustang chief engineer.

More Standard Equipment

For 2009, Ford has also added more standard equipment to the popular "Premium" arrays offered on both the Mustang V-6 and GT, including SIRIUS® Satellite Radio, ambient lighting, satin aluminum instrument panel trim and upgraded interior trim.

A new, optional GT Security Package includes an active anti-theft system and wheel locking kit and Brilliant Silver clearcoat metallic joins the list of available Mustang exterior colors.

The Mustang V-6 coupe and convertible are equipped with a 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter SOHC 6-cylinder engine that is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed automatic. The Mustang GT coupe and convertible are powered by a 300-horsepower, 4.6-liter 3V V-8 engine. The standard gearbox is 5-speed manual, with an available 5-speed automatic.

Other highlights include

--Standard front-seat side air bags; dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags; safety-belt pretensioners; passenger seat sensing; crash severity sensing.
--Available High Intensity Discharge headlamps.
--18-inch wheel offering on V-6 coupe.
--Available customizable instrument panel allowing mix-and-match lighting at the touch of a button.

They'd be better off with the 201hp V6 from the Ford Taurus. At least that's not a truck engine.

Someone should tell them what year it is.

I'm sure they'll have an upgraded V6 for 2010. They better, the Camaro's base engine has 300+ HP and does 0-60 in under 6 seconds.

The stang has its work cut out...from M/T:

"We stopped bringing Mustangs on our development rides because they were so far behind us in our rearview mirror," says Al Oppenheiser, GM's North American rear-drive vehicle chief engineer and effectively the new Camaro's father. "It wasn't even worth taking them anymore," he continues, with the faintest of smirks."

I was going G-8 but will wait one more year to see the camaro but not waiting for the stang...

Both Nov issues of C&D and MT review a 99% production ready V6 Camaro and love it. The handling is apparently very, very good.

Post Ford Mustang FR500CJ Cobra Jet

Press release...

Forty years after its debut, a legend of drag racing is back.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Ford Cobra Jet Mustang in 1968, Ford Racing is introducing the 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang, now available for customers to race in NHRA sportsmen classes during the 2009 season.

The new Mustang FR500CJ is officially being launched at the Ford press conference Nov. 4, as part of the 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

For decades, the Mustang has been the preeminent car in many forms of racing, including drag racing. Adding to the rich and successful racing history of Ford's iconic pony car, the 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang is a factory-built race car that is NHRA-legal and ready for the drag strip. It is the first purpose-built race car from Ford for drag racing since the original Cobra Jet Mustang.

"The Cobra Jet is one of the transformational vehicles for Ford Racing," said Brian Wolfe, director, Ford Racing Technology. "The 2008 CJ will get us more involved with the sportsmen racers in drag racing. At this point there are a lot of little guys who are running Fords from the 60s, 70s and even a few from the 80s, but those cars aren't necessarily relevant to what we are producing today.

"Those Ford racers are among the most loyal Ford supporters and customers we have," Wolfe added. "The CJ makes a statement for our company that even in times as tough as these, we can introduce something as special as the Cobra Jet. As I guy who has tracked Ford history from the beginning and understands the significance of the CJ, this is by far the best factory drag car that we have produced."

The original Cobra Jet Mustang was conceived by drag racing legend Bob Tasca, the competition-oriented Ford dealer in Rhode Island who at the time operated one of Ford's most successful retail operations. Tasca looked to the Ford parts shelf when he wanted to upgrade the engines on some of the Mustangs that he was selling, and came up with the KR-8 conversion package for his performance customers.

Henry Ford II announced that Ford would put together several of the Tasca 428-powered Mustangs for drag teams competing in the 1968 Winternationals, where two of the Mustangs made it into the finals and Al Joniec went on to win the Super Stock championship. After the car's success at Winternationals, Ford announced that it would be producing the 428ci Cobra Jet engine.

"When I made the Cobra Jet engine available to Ford, they found out quickly how good it was and they decided to make it happen," said Tasca Sr. "My feeling has always been that Mustang should be the performance leader for the Ford Motor Company. I like performance that helps me sell the unit. What the Cobra Jet did for Mustang was phenomenal."

The 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang joins Ford Racing's stable of championship-capable customer Mustangs: the Mustang FR500S, the Mustang FR500C and the Mustang FR500GT. All are turnkey cars available via the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog and through Ford dealers.

The FR500 series of Mustangs are race-ready cars, designed by Ford Racing engineers for performance-conscious customers, that can be rolled right off of a truck and win in competition. The Cobra Jet, as delivered, will be able to run in the 10-second range and be competitive as is, just like its sister car, the Mustang FR500C. The FR500C was unloaded for customers at the 2005 Grand-Am Rolex Series opening race in Daytona on a Wednesday, won the race on Friday and went on to secure a championship that first season.

And just like the Ford Mustang FR500S, the Cobra Jet Mustang will get its start at the Auto Alliance International (AAI) assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich., before being sent to a Ford supplier to have additional parts installed and for final prep.

All of the additional parts and pieces for the CJ can be found in the Ford Performance Parts catalog. And since the Cobra Jet is produced from a base V-6 Mustang, any consumer can turn their Mustang into a Cobra Jet by purchasing the parts from the Ford Performance Parts catalog.

The car features a 400-hp 5.4-liter supercharged engine with a standard 6-speed manual transmission, automatic optional, and a drag race wheel/tire combination. The Cobra Jet is NHRA-legal to 10.00 second ETs and has an NHRA Stock Eliminator legal interior and is approximately 3,300 lbs. The car will also showcase a unique trim and appearance design and include an optional 2008 Cobra Jet graphics kit to distinguish itself.

The price of the 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang is $69,900. All 50 of the initial 2008 model vehicles have already been ordered by Ford dealers for delivery to customers. For those customers who miss out on the first run, there's no worry, as Ford Racing has set a goal to provide future versions of the Cobra Jet.

"We've built a Mustang for drag racing that we've very proud of," said Wolfe. "We're confident that this, like all Mustang race cars, will be competitive, and a value for those looking to enter a variety of sportsmen classes. We can't wait to see the car in the hands of customers."

The Cobra Jet will make its official public debut at SEMA on Tuesday, November 4, and production will begin immediately on the 50 CJs, with delivery slated for early first quarter of 2009. The 2008 Cobra Jet is expected to first compete in the 2009 Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., in February.

What we've all been waiting for all this time!

Interesting, for the interior ambient lighting, you can choose between 125 different color options, which is pretty cool. I like the rear more, the diffuser at the bottom breaks up the squarish butt that the pre-facelift S197 had. The front look better at a level angle, but from above it looks funny, and it reminds me of the Acura pointy nose look.

I want one. The first frontal shot makes it look mean as hell. The interior looks a lot better in my opinion. I wonder what'll be the engine options, or other wheel choices. I have to admit I love the way the current V8 stang sounds like.

Meh - not much of a change.

Funny this should come up the day I got the title for an 09 Mustang by mistake instead for the new office vehicle - an 09 Dodge Caravan.

looks like a bunch of hard plastic.

exterior is good looking.

i have one theory on mustangs: you're either a sucker for driving around a V6 stang, or a sucker for spending the $$ on a GT that remains to have poor build quality.

Some nice changes that clean up the styling. But some people will be hard pressed to tell that's its a revised car.

No word on engines yet?
