Ford: Mercury Brand to End in 2012
Mercury suppliers reveal brand will be dead by 2012, Ford continues to deny Mercury is headed for the chopping block.
leftlanenews
As we have reported on these pages before, it looks as though Ford's Mercury division doesn't have a life expectancy after 2012. While Ford is still optimistic about the brand's future, Mercury suppliers have revealed that their supply orders simply stop after 2012.
In a report by Edmunds — which echos a Leftlane story from October — it is confirmed that Mercury has no future vehicle plans beyond 2012, with every model going through a phase-out within the next four years. The Mercury Sable will likely be the first victim, with Mercury getting the cold shoulder on a new version of the 2010 Ford Taurus.
Subsequently, the Mariner SUV and Grand Marquis sedan will be dead by 2011 or early 2012. It is believed that the Milan will be the last Mercury produced, holding on until 2012 when an all-new Ford Fusion — the Milan's sister car — is scheduled to bow.
With Ford killing any plans to give Mercury a version of the Ford Flex, the once proud marque officially has nothing in the future vehicle pipeline.
But despite the evidence that Mercury is on life support, Ford insists that Mercury is an important part of its portfolio. At a media event held on Monday, Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, told Automotive News that Mercury is an important part of Ford's lineup and that Ford is continually investing in the division. "It is an important part of the stable of brands," Fields said.
With suppliers now chiming in on the fate of Mercury, it's getting even harder to believe Ford's side of the story.

... That's a shame. There's alot Ford could do with the Mercury brand. It shouldn't just die. If I were ford, I position exclusively as a hybrid car-line brand; or perhaps a youth/small car brand. Three years ago I would have said it should be revived as an excitement division, but current gas prices make that a bad business case.

I'm Down Right Fierce!
Can't say that I'm surprised. And IMO good riddance.
I mean more than 50% of the mercury lineup consists of rebadged Fords.
IE: My Dad had a late 90's Mercury Mountaineer which was in essence a late 90's Ford Explorer.

But ridiculous that they just change the emblems and grille and add an extra 5% onto the price for a Ford.
And Yummy, is your avatar supposed to be Shikamaru?

Good riddance, they don't have a single model that is significantly different than the Ford equivalents. I vaguely remember riding along in a late 80's V8 Cougar with my dad before too.... too bad that when they ressurected it, they made it a FWD econo-hatch. Even still, they were essentially rebadged Thunderbirds (the older ones)

Problem with Mercury was and is they have the same options as Ford on their cars
I liked the Sable it was a nice car, it looked better than said Taurus but there was nothing better in it luxury wise
mercury should do what Acura does
Load the car up with goodies and not have a stripped down version
TL comes in 2 basic cars TL and TL type S
only option on a base TL are
manual trans
navigation
tires
TL type S gets it all with only cosmetic options/ tires

Ford's idea used to be
1. buy a Ford (basic car)
2. move up to a Mercury (mid rage car)
3. end up in a Lincoln
