Ford recalls GTs due to potential cracking in suspension control arm
AMY WILSON | Automotive News
Posted Date: 12/20/04

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling its GT supercar, saying the vehicle is unsafe to drive because of potential cracking in a suspension control arm.

Ford has notified dealerships of the GT recall. The recall affects the 448 GTs produced this year. Of those, 289 have been shipped to dealerships, and 106 are in customers' hands.

Ford says no accidents or injuries have been reported. Engineers discovered the cracked control arm in one GT during a routine field inspection.

It may be weeks before the cars are back on the road. A casting problem caused the flaw, a Ford spokeswoman said.

Ford is developing a new casting procedure and will then produce new control arms.

The base price of a GT is $143,845, including a $1,250 destination charge and a $2,600 gas-guzzler tax.

I think the old F-150 had the same problem. Parts sharing?

And another thing. 289 shipped but only 106 in customer hands?? I'd figure each one would leave the dealer the day it arrived. Maybe there still in transit.

Oh man! a recall for possible cracking control arm! Ford is so nice! wish Ford own BMW now! there is always a known problem on all E36 & E46 with bending on front control arm and cracking on control arm bushing. Actually, they redesign it on 2001 but still not good at all. I already on my forth set of control arms and they consider this as a normal wear item. The dealer blame on me to ask for replacing it and they thought they did me a big favour to replace it under the warranty...

This is the reason why BMW includes all service for 3 (or is it 4) years because if it didn't, people and their wallets would fully understand the cost of owning a BMW.

Flagship models are ment to showcase what you do best. Ford is the recall king so why should their flagship car be any different?

Ford Tells 2005 GT Owners "Not To Drive Their Vehicle Under Any Circumstances."
Robert Lane
19 December 2004

Ford will quietly notify dealers who have 2005 GT models in their inventory that they may not drive, demonstrate or sell the vehicles until two recalls are performed. According to a Ford memo, representatives from Ford will contact GT owners individually and instruct them "not to drive their vehicle under any circumstances."

In the first of two recalls, Ford will inspect the fuel system of all GTs made from 13 October 2004 through 19 November 2004. Some of the Ford GTs may require the installation of a new fuel tank.

The second recall to be issued will be safety related due to defective suspension control arms. The safety recall will include all GTs made from JOB1 (30 June 2004) through 11 December 2004. According to a Ford memo, "Ford has identified a quality issue with the suspension control arms on the affected vehicles which may adversely affect vehicle handling in the event of a control arm fracture. In the event a customer does not seek service for the diminished handling concern, a crash potentially could occur." Replacement parts should be available to dealers by 01 February 2005.

According to sources, Ford may issue a future recall to replace the rear engine exterior cowl cover due to alleged cracking issues. A BlueOvalNews article published on 07 September 2004 alleged that the cylinder heads on the GT may be defective, however, no such defects have been reported.

These recalls may garner (either fairly or unfairly) more negative media attention toward Ford for several reasons. First, the GT is supposed to represent Ford's best build and quality efforts - this is Ford's total image product and, second; Ford (like all domestic brands) is already under immense scrutiny for their product quality.

Ford has manufactured 470 GTs from 30 June 2004 to 11 December 2004 at the Wixom, Michigan Special Vehicle Center.

Not that I don't love this...

but the CS just does something else for me. Maybe it's that hand-painted stripe. Or the upshift paddle on the right that is larger than the opposite one (for easier access when upshifting on corner-exit). I can't put my finger on it...
If you opt for the Challenge Stradale wheels and the Carbon discs, you can start to woo me for the F430...Italian stripe maybe...

Either way, fuck the GT. Why spend over $150-175 on a Ford when you can pass people on the street to the calling "Forza Ferrari!" and not have to worry about your control arm snapping.

As for the price of the Ford, and other "super cars", even if I had the money I would never pay over 100,000 for a vehicle....unless it has wings! I could buy a brand new single engine piston airplane for that kind of moolah (and a nice used piston twin).

BTW....for yinz who really know the mechanics of cars....what would happen if the parts mentioned in the recall failed? Would the wheels literally fall off and the rear panel fly off? That would be hilarious!

Ford can't seem to shake the "Fix or repair Daily" or "Found on Road Dead" mantra's.

I prefer the italian version (spelling may be way off) "Fato oggi, roto domani"

Which translates to "Made today, Broken tommorrow"

Or Ford = F***ed Over Rebuilt Dodge.

Those are almost as good as BMW's mantra:

BMW = Break My Wallet.

Ferrari 360's has had numerous recalls and five within it's first year of production.
