First Ford GT Fetches $500,000

By Paul Eisenstein

The first Ford GT sold to the public commanded a significant mark-up. While the automaker has not put a final price tag on the supercar, it’s expected to garner somewhere around $130,000. That would mean the high bidder at Christie’s auction paid a nearly 400 percent markup when the gavel went down Sunday night. The winning bid in the special charity event came in at $500,000. The auction house had originally expected to see the bidding reach no higher than $180,000, but GT fever might have been fueled by the widespread presence of original GT40 race cars throughout the Monterey Peninsula over the weekend. The Ford racers competed at the Monterey Historics on Saturday, and were also part of a high-profile class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday. Ford will begin production later this year on the GT, and eventually expects to build as many as 1500 of the 190-mph sports cars annually.

Ford GT preproduction model tested and it's FAST!

Very surprised at these numbers. This thing flies. We are talking faster than a Viper (RT for now - I am guessing the Coupe will be faster) and dont even compare it to the Modena, which is its direct competitor.

Here are the numbers (from MotorTrend):

0-60 = 3.7 seconds
1/4 = 11.7 at 122mph (the mph figures is astonishingly fast for the HP claims in my opinion)

Power is at 500HP at 6K rpm and 500 pounds of torque at 4.5K rpm.

Braking from 60 mph = 100 feet!
Skidpad = 1.05 g
600 ft slalom = 71mph (holy moly that's high - remember the magic number is 70 mph - anything higher than that is clearly exotic)

Engine is 5.4 liters supercharged.

Top speed is estimated at 200 mph.

Again, this is a pre-production model. I would not be surprised if productions models were faster yet.

Beltfed 10-03-2003 09:04 AM

Well, it was a pre production model........cars tend to gain a little weight once they hit production status.

Let's hope that isn't the case with the GT.

Its a cool car.

danny25 10-03-2003 09:05 AM

OMG those are awesome #s!!! I'd be happy with just acceleration #s like that, but that those handling and braking #s are amazing too.

Now, how much $?

If you have to ask......

The GT is expensive, I suspect the first year cars will go for well over MSRP (which is around $135k).

Sorry I missed the price.

The estimated price is $147K. Par with the Modena.

FERRARI ENZO FERRARI

Vehicle type: mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2-passenger, 2-door coupe

Price as tested: $659,430

danny25 10-03-2003 11:14 AM

wow, the GT is in Enzo territory for about 1/4 the price.

Aquineas 10-03-2003 11:28 AM

Awesome performance potential, bad name. They should change it to GT500 or something, or GT540 (for the engine displacement). I suspect that Ford has underrated the HP if production numbers are true to form.

charliemike 10-03-2003 11:31 AM

How about "The Ford GT Forty"

hehe

CL P Diddy 10-03-2003 11:43 AM

A $100K + Mustang? I guess. They did sell those limited production Shelby GT 500E's "Elenor" for $80K and $120K.
And they sold every one.

Is this going to be "The Mustang" or is Ford going to have a regular, say $30K 2005 Mustang based on the current model in the line up.

Another way of putting it (simplistic math though it gives some perspective):

Ferrari charges about $1000 for every HP with the Enzo (it's a lot more if one considers dealer price gauging)

If that were the case with the GT, its price would have been half a million.

That of the CLS' would have been more than quarter of a million.

Just some simplistic perspective.

zeroday 10-03-2003 01:17 PM

ok stop comparing a ford with a ferrari here....Enzo is rolling over in his grave right now.

acceleration isn't everything.

Zapata 10-03-2003 01:17 PM

mad power + Midengine + RWD= insanely quick 1/4 times :)

AQUI NO! 10-03-2003 01:20 PM

holy carp, ford may have done it again. they built a car to beat all ferraris. Wow, i'm impressed

AQUI NO! 10-03-2003 01:21 PM

zero, did u look a skid pad and slalom numbers ?

why? If the numbers compare, the cars compare... at least in some ways.

zeroday 10-03-2003 05:26 PM

it's a ford...ferrari has been building exotic sports cars for years. a ford just can't be in the same league as a ferrari. No matter what the numbers say. I'd still take a modena or gallardo over this thing any day of the week.

It'd be like seiko making a 15k$ watch....i'd still buy the 15k$ rolex. A Ferrari is a piece of rolling art. Ford has built its brand name around mass produced cars built for general consumption. Ford just can't all of the sudden decide it's going to build exotics and expect me to get all excited about it.

With that said, the performance numbers look great..for a ford ;)

danny25 10-03-2003 09:00 PM

but being able to compare it to a Ferrari shows how well Ford did with this car.

pimpscls 10-03-2003 10:20 PM

that shit has good performance overall

Python2121 10-04-2003 01:42 PM

so braking is 100 ft 60-0 vs the gallardo's 150 ft right?

this thing sounds like a monster and a cheap one at that

edit: "cheap" being used as a relative term

No way the Gallardo stops from 60 in 150 ft......maybe from 70. 60-0 in 150 is like 1976 Chevy Suburban territory:P :P :P Where did you hear that from, its gotta be 150 from 70...

I am not comparing A Ford. I am comparing the FOrd GT to Ferrari. Specifically and as I posted earlier, the absolute, direct competitor to the GT is the Modena.

Why should I stop comparing it to the Modena? Ford's objective with the GT is to make a Modena priced, better than Modena USAmerican exotic with a legendary name and exterior look.

Why should I stop comparing it?
