Drop the Fusion. It looked dated the moment it was introduced. The Mondeo looks infinitely better. I remember seeing Mondeos in China and wondering why Ford refuses to sell such a great looking car in the US market.

Time for Ford to get their heads out of their asses and realize that if they don't do something soon, they may be going out of business...

With pocket rockets being so popular stateside, they need to import that Focus ST first.

IMHO, I do not see the need for the Mondeo now. The Fusion appears to be at least as nice a car as the Mondeo (...although the Milan has nicer trim). It just needs that Cyclone V6 in order to be somewhat competitive with the Camry/Accord/Altima trio.

Every Ford article I read I always think "why didn't they bring over the Euro focus?" Even with the Civic being as good as it is, Honda wouldn't dare think it could be competitive with an eight year old platform, so who knows what was going through the minds of Ford execs when they decided to stick with the old Focus.

Ford would be really dumb not to bring the Mondeo over as a Mercury. It's styling and platform are unique from the Fusion, so it coudn't possibly be seen as a "clone." It'd be a bit more expensive than the Fusion, but Mercury could be positioned as a premium maker (similar to what GM wants Saturn to become). Mercury's starved for unique product; give ti to them (and don't change a thing about it).

The reason for that is because if the Euro Focus came to the USA, it would start at 21K. Start! Which would result in close to 152 cars sold, lol. The platform used for the Focus in Europe is very expensive compared to where the USA Focus "plays" in the USA with respect to price point.

A Euro-Focus rebadged as a Mercury might sell -- the Volvo S40 shares the same platform and starts at 24K.

Are you saying that Ford couldn't of taken something from the Euro Focus? Even if they take the interior, chassis, anything from it would greatly improve the current, old Focus. (I guess they tried to take the exterior a bit, but that couldn't save the car underneath) If anything, I mean Ford should've always planned to make the Euro Focus here too, instead of looking at it now saying "Aww shucks its too expensive for the US."

No. You cant use the chassis from two different platforms and merge. Even if possible it would be even more cost prohibitive. This industry lives and dies by economies of scale and common platform proliferation. Also the interior of the Euro Focus is a lot more expensive than the USA Focus because the Focus plays on a different level in Europe. A Focus in Europe is like a Camry here. It's the mainstream car there.

Finally, one of the big reasons why the Focus in Europe sells so well is its handling. And that comes from the platform and chassis used.

Blarg...they've also "considered" bringing Australian cars too. Hurry up and stop the meetings/talking and just bring them...dammit.

So, how is it that Mazda manages to make it work? Mazda is not using the same-gen platform the Focus is on.

With the Mazda3 starting at least $4k less than your number, I doubt Ford would have to start the Focus at $21k.

The Mazda3 and the EUro Focus are not on par.

My info about the pricing came from auto show Autoline Detroit which is a very reliable source for the automotive reality. I believe it.

The Euro Focus is a better car than the Mazda3?

So basically, if I understand this correctly, the Euro Focus is about on par with the US Volvo S40?

Holy shit.

Well if that is the case then the Euro Fiesta is a better car than the US Focus. People are buying a $20k+ Mazda3 all day long.

So, bring over the Euro Fiesta and price that from $14-20k and then the Euro Focus against the Golf and higher trim Mazda3 from $21k up.

They WILL sell because they will be good cars.

Indeed, the Fiesta is a very good car in Europe. A far cry from the Festiva/Aspire we once got here.

To Ford's credit, the new Mondeo looks a heck of a lot like the Iosis concept.

That is sweet!!

But given Ford's debacle with their $6B expediture of the prior Mondeo transplant (Contour/Mystique) and the Merkur pseudo-Euros (XR4Ti/Scorpio) a decade prior, I can see why Ford is gunshy about importing from their Euro divisions.

I can see how they view it that way, but they need to transplant something that will be a major segment player, ie small car or family car, instead of in between like the Contour was.

Ford: European models to arrive starting in 2010

From CNN.com

I like all the choices and if in a couple of years I HAD to have a people mover I'd definitely look at the Kuga and C-Max.

I don't think that's good enough for me. Unless there are crash standard differences that preclude just bringing the car over as is ...

Otherwise, I want those ham-handed troglodytes penning these current cars to be kept as far away from the designs as possible.

I can't understand why this wasn't a no-brainer to begin with? Ford Europe = sexy cars while we are stuck with some of the shittiest designs I have ever seen from any manufacturer. And from the same company! That makes no sense...

Don't most cars lose a tonne of value in 2 years...?

And as much as I dislike what we get in North America, the Ford that's available in Europe and Asia...it's day and night compared to what we get.
