Ford: Europe Division to Design Future Mercury Models Speculation
Ford’s Mercury division has been devoid of any new models for several years now – with suppliers revealing there is nothing in the pipeline beyond 2011 — prompting several rumors that Ford is planning to kill off its once-proud marque. But Ford has been consistent in its backing of Mercury, and a new report seems to confirm the Blue Oval’s allegiance.
According to Automotive News, Ford has handed over the reins for a future Mercury model to its European division. Ford has gone on record that the ‘new’ Mercury will consist of premium small cars, and it looks as though this is the first step towards that goal. And since Ford has no plans to sell its Mercury brand in Europe, the new model is expected to be headed State side.
But fans of Ford of Europe shouldn’t get too overly excited. While the next Mercury model will have strong European roots, it will not be a completely new model. In fact, the first small Mercury will likely be a rebadged version of the Euro-spec Ford Focus – a vehicle that is already headed to Ford showrooms in the U.S. Mercury-badged versions of the Ford Mondeo and Kuga are also said to be in the works.
So while Mercury’s future looks like it will still be filled with plenty of Ford re-badges, it’s good to hear that the brand actually has a future – especially with European influences.

When I saw the thread title I instantly thought Mondeo. They'd be stupid not to, people have been suggesting this for a while now. It would be one of Ford's nicest looking sedans in a long time.... no make that one of their best looking cars in a long time, period. Hell while they're at it bring over the Falcon too.... drop the Taurus or whatever they've got.

Anyhoo...here's the other thread relating to Ford's Euro-cars coming to NA: https://acurazine.com/forums/automotive-news-6/ford-european-models-arrive-2010-speculation-395992/
I've got my fingers crossed.

wow...Saturn gives us Euro GM's and now Mercury will give us Euro Ford's. Who would have thought Saturn and Mercury would be the future of GM and Ford?

i'm pretty suprised by this. i used to be a lincoln mercury salesman. the client base is made up of almost entirely of elderly. mind you the CROWN VIC, MARQUE, and TOWNCAR are the last body on frame cars being made. And are some of the last cars with steering coloum shifters. and have good ol' rear wheel drive with a somewhat effecient 4.6L v8. look at the mercury MONTEGO it was quickly renamed the SABLE because old timers wanted something familiar. the MILAN is just too new a design for some oldies. the VIC MARQUE and TOWNCAR really havent had a makeover since 98!!!
For me this change is nice to hear. the MILAN and MARIENER were huge hits for the brand. and tell you the truth, i'd take a MOUNTANIER premier over an MDX anyday.
FORD and MITSU are the last two family owned brands, say what you will about the two companies but i'd hate for anything to hurt either of the two.

^ I meant more in terms of badge engineering Euro models. Take a Mondeo and slap a Mercury badge on it - like Acura did with the Euro Accord. Repeat with the Euro Focus and others. It sounds like Mercury might do a bit more than badge engieer the US cars but that's the general thinking from that article. Of course one has to also consider the source....
