Ferrari is planning to radically overhaul its range of vehicles and introduce a host of new models that push the Italian brand into new segments of the market
For many years, Ferrari had a rather predictable family of models and would simply update these models without venturing into different niches. Speaking with Autocar, Ferrari commercial and marketing chief Enrico Galliera revealed that the SF90 Stradale offers a glimpse of how the company will expand into new segments moving forward.
“What we are trying to do is become a lot less predictable. We are currently working to redesign our products of the future,” he said. “For example, the [recently revealed] SF90 Stradale is not a car that was in our product range previously. It’s a completely new car, new technology, a new segment. It is what we are calling a ‘range supercar’. It’s not a LaFerrari. But it does supercar performance – and is available to a wider range of customers.”
Ferrari has previously confirmed that it will reveal five new models this year. The F8 Tributo and SF90 Stradale are the first two of these and while the remaining three have yet to be shown to the world, one of them is expected to be an 812 Superfast Spider. Galliera hinted that another one of them will be in a “new segment” for the company. While we don’t know what segment that could be, there’s a chance it may be a new entry-level model for the company to rival McLaren’s Sports Series range of models.
Ferrari’s long-awaited SUV will also push it into another market but it isn’t expected to hit the streets until 2022.

Ferrari looks toward the future with a newly patented engine design that the company believes would reduce emissions while maintaining performance. The Prancing Horse filed the paperwork on April 24, 2019, but the United States Patent and Trademark Office published it on October 24.
The patent describes a way to incorporate two different combustion methods into the engine. One of the strategies involves injecting a small amount of fuel just before the spark plug ignites. Ferrari describes the advantage of this system as increasing the airflow through the combustion chamber and creating a hotter air-fuel mixture. "The catalytic system is therefore very rapidly heated at engine start-up and the emissions, particularly significant in this phase, can be reduced," Ferrari writes in the patent documents.
This Ferrari engine adds a pre-chamber that sits above the center of the main combustion chamber, and both of them have their own spark plug. During normal driving, some of the air-fuel mixture enters the pre-chamber, and the spark plug ignites it. "This translates into a rapid combustion with low detonation risk," Ferrari writes.
Conversely, the spark plug in the main combustion chamber operates during startup or low-load conditions. In this mode, the engine operates under spark-coupled injection to heat up the catalytic converter.
A recent report indicates that Ferrari wants to do what's necessary to keep the V12 engine in its lineup. These patent images specifically shot a 12-cylinder powerplant. This suggests the idea in the company's description is one possibility for creating a more efficient version of this potent mill.

Ferrari has been reticent about going all-electric, but the brand’s CEO now says that they will eventually do it after 2025 – if they are still around…In the past, Ferrari executives have made comments about how they don’t think battery-electric powertrains make sense for what they are aiming to do with their supercars.
Ferrari Chief Executive Officer Louis Camilleri reiterated this stance in comments to reporters at Ferrari’s Maranello factory this week (via Reuters):
Camilleri indicated that an all-electric Ferrari wouldn’t come to market until after 2025:
That’s one of the slowest electrification timelines from any legacy automakers as most of them aim for 25 to 50% of their sales to be all-electric by 2025.
Earlier this year, Ferrari unveiled its first plug-in production car: the Ferrari SF90 Stradale PHEV.
Ferrari Chief Executive Officer Louis Camilleri reiterated this stance in comments to reporters at Ferrari’s Maranello factory this week (via Reuters):
“The battery technology is not where it should be yet.”
“There are still significant issues in terms of autonomy, in terms of speed of recharging. So eventually we will come out with one. But it’s post-2025. Not in the short term.”

For those of you worried that Ferrari might have given up on the V12, there's good news. Today the company announced the development of an entirely new V12 engine that will make its way into a "game-changing" vehicle this summer. And we have an idea as to what that game-changer might be.
Ferrari uses the phrase "Heart Of A Thoroughbred" in the teaser text on its website, which almost certainly points to one vehicle: the new Purosangue SUV. For all of you English speakers out there, the word "Purosangue" in Italian translates to "thoroughbred" – so the connection is easy to draw.
The quick 14-second clip, unfortunately, doesn't provide any other evidence that this engine will be for the Purosangue. The video shows some close-up shots of the V12, with the "Ferrari" wordmark in bold white lettering located prominently atop the block. That’s about it.
Up until now, it was unclear what engines Ferrari might offer on the Purosangue. Previous spy videos showed a uniquely quiet prototype, suggesting a version of the 296 GTB's plug-in hybrid V6 was underhood, while the internet has also floated rumors of a V8. Either or both of those engines could still be offered, but we know now – almost certainly – that there will be a V12 option.
Ferrari reiterates that this new "game-changing" vehicle will debut this summer, and we know already that Ferrari plans to unveil the Purosangue in just a few months. Just like some of its super sports cars, Ferrari says that the Purosangue will be available in limited quantities, but pricing details are still a mystery.
We'll know more about the Purosangue and this all-new V12 engine closer to the debut date.
