World’s fastest - - By AUTOWEEK

NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan piloted a stock Dodge Ram SRT-10 off the Saltillo, Mexico, assembly line into the Guinness Book of World Records as the “World’s Fastest Production Pickup Truck.” The truck, which was not modified in any way for additional power or enhanced aerodynamics, posted a two-lap, both-directions average speed of 154.587 mph over a “flying kilometer” on the 4.71-mile oval at the DaimlerChrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan, on Feb. 2. The record run was certified by Guinness World Records and the Sports Car Club of America. The previous record was 147.54 mph, set last July by the Ford SVT F-150 Lightning, before the Ram SRT-10 went into production.

2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon Announced

New Dodge Truck Blasts Out of the Earth at "Groundbreaking" Ceremony - New 500-horsepower Viper-powered Truck Joins Ram Party
Tuesday June 15, 11:27 am ET

- Dodge Storms Truck Market with Introduction of Two New 2005 Trucks - Chrysler Group President and CEO Dieter Zetsche Unearths the Most Capable Pickup on the Planet - the New 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon - and the Viper-powered 2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab(R)

CHELSEA, Michigan, June 15 /CNW/ - First the earth moved. And then... a blur. Dodge unleashed two new, leading Dodge Ram pickups today, as the all-new 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon burst from the ground at the DaimlerChrysler Chelsea Proving Grounds, followed immediately by the familiar rumble of Viper V-10 power as the new 2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab raced into position as the newest member of the Ram and SRT families.

"Whether it's power, speed, torque or off-road prowess, Dodge Ram continues to lead the competition in every category," said Dieter Zetsche, President and CEO, Chrysler Group. "As the most capable pickup on the planet, the Dodge Ram Power Wagon goes places no other pickup can, while the Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab hauls in more ways than one."

Before the ground shook, Dodge Ram was already the leading truck on the market with a lineup long on superlatives:

- Dodge Ram 1500 with legendary HEMI(R) power is the most powerful mass production light-duty pickup on the market;

- Dodge Ram SRT-10 is the Guinness Book of World Records fastest production pickup ever; and

- Dodge Ram Heavy Duty Cummins 600 is the strongest pickup on the market with 600 lb.-ft. (813 N.m) of class-dominating torque.

With the return of the new 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon and the addition of the new 2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab to the Chrysler Group family of performance vehicles, Dodge Ram adds to its impressive list of leadership claims:

- The new Dodge Ram Power Wagon is the most capable off-road production pickup ever created

- Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab is the fastest, most powerful four-door pickup, offering enthusiasts ultimate performance coupled with extraordinary convenience and utility More

New 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon
------------------------------

New for 2005, the big, bad Dodge Ram Power Wagon is back for the first time in 25 years. The Dodge Ram Power Wagon returns to the Dodge lineup as a new Dodge Ram Heavy Duty model and debuts as the most capable off-road pickup on the planet.

Built for the road less traveled, the Dodge Ram Power Wagon legend is reborn with legendary HEMI power, class-exclusive electric locking front and rear differentials, a class-exclusive electronic disconnecting front sway bar and a custom-built Warn 5,443 kg (12,000-lb.) winch. The Dodge Ram Power Wagon leaves the competition in its dust - on- and off-road - and follows a simple credo: talk loudly and carry a big stick.

"The new 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon lives up to its name," said Mike Donoughe, Vice President - Body-on-Frame Product Team. "Dodge Power Wagon doesn't just beat the competition, it decimates them. There is simply no other pickup on the market that can touch the Dodge Ram Power Wagon's off-road prowess."

Based on the Dodge Ram 2500 and available in either Regular or Quad Cab body styles, the new 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon stands 2,047 mm (80.6 inches) tall and is distinguished by custom matte finish wheel flares, a large Power Wagon badge across the tailgate, custom 17 x 8-inch polished forged aluminum wheels and 33-inch BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires - the tallest standard tires offered on a production pickup.

The 345-horsepower 5.7-litre HEMI Magnum V-8 is the only available engine.

The 2005 Dodge Ram Power Wagon boasts best-in-class wheel articulation with new suspension designs. The front suspension uses a solid front axle with coil spring design, while the rear features a new single stage leaf design and uses unique, softer spring settings.

For serious off-roading capability, the Dodge Ram Power Wagon features new 4.56 gearing and Bilstein high-pressure gas shock absorbers.

"The Dodge Ram Power Wagon goes where other pickups cannot, but without deteriorating the Ram Heavy Duty's ride or towing capability," said Donoughe.

"The Power Wagon was built by off-roaders for off-roaders. One look at it - and especially at the standard custom 5,443-kg (12,000-lb.) Warn winch - lets you know that Power Wagon means business."

New 2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab
----------------------------------

If a Dodge Ram pickup - complete with 500 horsepower courtesy of the Dodge Viper SRT-10 engine - is good, a Viper-powered Ram with four doors is even better.

Following on the success of the Dodge Ram SRT-10 regular cab pickup, Dodge introduces the Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab, targeted directly at the truck enthusiast who wants SRT performance in a pickup with room for the family and towing capacity.

"We knew when we came out with the world's fastest production pickup that there would be customers who would want that same ultimate performance, but in a pickup that offered four-passenger seating and towing capability," said Dan Knott, Director - Street and Racing Technology (SRT). "So, the question was, 'Can we create a more usable truck for the person who wants to haul more stuff, but is not willing to give up performance?' Our answer is the Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab: a truck that is just as bad and bold in terms of performance, but a little more capable and versatile in terms of hauling."

Beginning with a Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab as a starting point, SRT engineers worked their magic with the kind of goodies that have enthralled Dodge Ram SRT-10 owners from day one: Viper V-10 power, a performance suspension, world-class brakes, bold performance styling and a race-inspired interior.

The only logical choice to power the world's ultimate performance four-door pickup: the 8.3-litre Dodge Viper V-10 engine, unleashing 500 horsepower and 525 lb.-ft. (712 N.m) of torque. The engine is backed up by a four-speed automatic transmission - a 48RE gearbox, specially adapted from a diesel engine application for its ability to handle monster amounts of torque. A heavy-duty torque converter, custom transmission calibration and two-piece drive shaft were also specifically chosen for overall powertrain integrity and performance. Additionally, the Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab was fitted with a 4.56 gear ratio to improve launch feel, low-end acceleration and towing capability of up to 3402 kilograms (7,500 pounds).

While brute power and straight-line performance are high on the list of any performance enthusiast, every SRT vehicle must also perform throughout a dynamic range - from neighborhood grocery runs to blasts through twisting and winding roads.

To give the Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab the right balance and poise through a wide variety of driving scenarios, SRT engineers began with a fully hydroformed frame as the basis for strength and rigidity. From there, the Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab was fitted with fully-tuned front and rear strut and spring assemblies. Up front, modified steering and independent front suspension carry the load, while in the rear, axle snubbers, performance-tuned springs and Bilstein monotube shocks keep things firmly planted through the corners.

Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab's braking system was designed by SRT engineers, utilizing heavy-duty Dodge Ram components and unique four-pot opposed-piston calipers that are new for 2005. A three channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) actuates new custom red brake calipers up front that grip rotors 38 centimetres (15 inches) in length, and in the rear, modified heavy-duty red calipers grip rotors 36 cm (14 in.) in length. Front brakes are cooled with air ducted from the front fascia to reduce heat build-up.

Featuring cues reminiscent of Dodge's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Ram - such as the deep front fascia equipped with a wind splitter, signature cross-hair grille and sculpted sides - the Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab features a unique hood with a fully functional air intake that provides added bay cooling. A body-colour aluminum tonneau cover, outfitted with a unique spoiler for aerodynamic balance, is standard.

Performance cues inside the Dodge Ram SRT-10 Quad Cab include the Viper-like pushbutton starter, race-inspired, grippy and heavily bolstered seats, a leather-wrapped carbon fibre-patterned steering wheel and brushed metal accents on the instrument panel and door trim panels.

I see that the srt-10 quad cab gets an upgraded auto tranny.

I wonder if this means that the regular cab srt-10's 6-speed manual isn't going to be available in this new quad cab version?

six adult passengers
How do they figure 6 passengers? Technically, isn't the driver not a passenger? So 7 people total? Really?

I don't even see how they got 6. There's a center console in the front, so it can't be a 3-across bench. You can sort of make out a center seat in the pic, but then where would the middle passenger's legs go? It looks like it's really a 5-seater.

i believe in the old tacoma (2003 ones) there was 3 seats in the front even tho it was a stick and u wouldn't be able to have anyone sit there; however they still had a seat belt there. maybe its the same concept where the passenger has to split his legs over the center console

CHELSEA, Mich. (Reuters) -- Chrysler gave automotive journalists a sneak peek on Thursday at its all-new Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, which comes equipped with fuel-saving technology and goes on sale in the fall.

The U.S. arm of Germany's DaimlerChrysler took the wraps off the truck, which is key to its future profits, at its closely guarded proving grounds in this rural town west of Detroit.

Like the model it replaces, the rugged 2006 Ram packs a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine, which generates 345 horsepower and gives Chrysler bragging rights as the maker of the most powerful light-duty pickup on the market.

But the new truck also comes with a standard cylinder deactivation system, which allows the engine to alternate seamlessly between V-8 mode and four-cylinder mode when less power is in demand.

Chrysler says the system, which it already offers on other vehicles including the Hemi-powered version of its 300 sedan, can improve fuel economy up to 20 percent.

That should be welcome news to consumers, as U.S. gasoline prices continue to hover near record highs.

Chrysler spokesman Colin McBean cautioned that fuel savings on the new truck, as gauged by what he called the conservative estimates of the Environmental Protection Agency, may only work out to about one mile per gallon, however.

Four-wheel-drive versions of the current Dodge Ram 1500 get a fuel-thirsty 13 miles per gallon in city driving and 17 miles on the highway.

Big pickups are bread-and-butter vehicles for Detroit's automakers and the Ram, Chrysler's best-selling truck, has long been a profit engine for the company.

The full Ram pickup line, including heavy-duty trucks, is also the volume leader at Chrysler, accounting for about 426,000 units of production last year, according to Jeff Brodoski, an analyst at J.D. Power and Associates.

U.S. sales of the Ram have slipped 7 percent so far this year, however, amid growing competition in the full-size pickup segment, and consumer incentives on the outgoing model were ratcheted up recently to $3,500 per vehicle.

"The segment is getting more and more crowded. The segment is getting more and more competitive," said Jim Hall, an analyst who tracks the auto industry at Autopacific Inc.

He said there was a potential for some customer dissatisfaction with the fuel savings on the new truck, since many drivers may fail to get the 20 percent boost in fuel economy.

But Hall added that Chrysler and its Dodge nameplate have a lot working for them with the Ram, however, which will have an even bolder "big rig" exterior than previous models and an all-new frame and suspension.

"Its got its own visual character that's sort of free and clear of the rest of the competitors," Hall said. "It means that you have the potential for loyalists who just like the way the damn thing looks, and that's always a plus."

And some info...

Dodge will show off its redesigned Ram pickup truck at the Detroit auto show next week. The truck features an all-new exterior design with a more aggressively styled headlight and grille design, plus more powerful engine choices, and a number of new features.

The new flagship motor is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 that produces 380 hp and 404 pound-feet of torque. The truck will also be available with a 4.7-liter V8 providing 310 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.7-liter V6 generating 215 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque.

An redesigned chassis made of high-strength steel incorporates an all-new, first-in-segment, multi-link coil spring rear suspension that improves ride and handling characteristics without reducing payload (up to an estimated 1,840 pounds) and towing capability (up to an estimated 9,100 pounds).

The truck features a drastically revamped interior, which reflects Chrysler's growing commitment to interior quality, after years of disappointing cabins. It features six-ring instrumentation, redesigned controls, chrome accents, premium seating with improved bolsters and two-tone upholstery.

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram is offered in regular cab, Quad Cab and crew cab, with three box lengths: 8-foot (regular cab), 6-foot-4-inches (regular cab and Quad Cab), and a new-for-2009 box length of 5-foot-7-inches (crew cab). Five trim levels are available, each with a unique appearance: ST, SLT, TRX, Sport, and the top-of-the-line Laramie.

I like the leather wrapped dash. But I think the Ford's interior still looks better.

Both dashes look great - good job Ford and Dodge.

The new front end reminds me of a 1999 Dakota:

Why? That way when someone searches for Dodge RAM it comes up with this thread instead of this one and another one about the RAM.

This is the first Ram I've liked in a long time... Very nicely done, both inside and out. The Ford's interior narrowly beats the Ram, but the Rams exterior kills the new F-150.

So that TWO posts would come up - one for when the Ram was brand new for 2006 and one the new for 2009 Ram.
