If you’re bruising around town in a 707-horsepower Hellcat, the only time gas mileage crosses your mind is when you wonder how many freeway runs you want to make tonight.

That’s fortunate, as the Hellcat is no green machine: it gets 22 mpg on the highway—when fitted with the eight-speed automatic. With the six-speed manual, it rates just 21 mpg highway.

Around town, the figures—not yet officially disclosed—are certain to be a tick worse than the standard Challenger SRT’s 15 mpg (automatic) or 14 mpg (stick) ratings.

Chrysler is quick to point out the Hellcat’s strong combination of gas mileage and power, comparing the 707 hp / 22 mpg rating to the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster (700 hp / 18 mpg highway); the Aston Martin Vanquish (576 hp / 18 mpg highway); and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT (583 horsepower / 19 mpg highway).

Of course, the real wow factor on Hellcat running expenses isn’t going to be fuel, even if you spend most of your time drag racing from stoplight to stoplight—it’s going to be feeding those huge rear wheels regular meals of rubber after every intense burnout session.

We call it money well spent.

If you were hoping to get your hands on the very first 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, you’re out of luck as the car has just been sold. It was put up for auction by Dodge, which plans to donate all proceeds from the sale to the charity organization Opportunity Village, which helps those with intellectual disabilities.

The final bid came in at a staggering $825,000, which was made all the sweeter by a matching donation from the Engelstad Family Foundation. The auction, held over the weekend in Las Vegas, was organized by Barrett-Jackson and featured local identities Wayne Newton and Penn Jillette, both supporters of the benefiting charity.

It’s not clear who the winning bidder was but he or she will be easy to spot: the Challenger SRT Hellcat bearing VIN #0001will be the only one to feature the Dodge Viper SRT’s sultry Stryker Red paint scheme. The car was hand-painted by the team at Dodge and also comes with special Hellcat badging, specific VIN documentation and one-of-a-kind memorabilia.

Like all Challenger SRT Hellcats, it’s powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 rated at 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. Of course, we hear that the engine is significantly more powerful than the official numbers suggest.

Other highlights of this past weekend’s Barrett-Jackson auction included the very last 2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition, which raised $170,000 for the Henry Ford Heart & Vascular Institute; and a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 with VIN #0003, which raised $147,500 for the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

Experimenting with my GoPro3... attempting to capture the HellCat's incredible baritone fury...then a CTSV on Slicks got into my crosshairs! Was a fun couple of laps chasing him down. The CTSV driver overcooked a few corners (admittedly) as he was driving in his mirrors as the Cat closed in! The highlight of this video is not the little bit of track action but THAT engine note...IMHO it has gotta to be one of the best sounding engines available on the market today. Hats off to the SRT engineering, power train, exhaust and integration team. The Hellcat simply works as a system. Loads of character, grit and pace!

Most people show their support for veterans with thank yous, patriotic bumper stickers, and small charity donations. But Jay Leno isn't most people. The former talk-show host and all around car fanatic recently took a wounded veteran for a ride in a 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, then tossed him the keys.

Leno wanted to do something that would bring a little fun into a veteran's life as part of The Today Show's ongoing Shine A Light series. So he gave Corporal Ethan Leberge a ride in the Hellcat—then gave him the car. Leberge was injured in a suicide-bomber attack in Afghanistan that also killed two soldiers. He sustained shrapnel wounds to his left leg and arm, and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Leno said that when he meets soldiers he finds that they're often "worlds apart," but he and Leberge quickly bonded over their mutual love of cars, and Leberge jumped at the chance to take a ride in the Hellcat. Leno has found plenty of nice things to say about the Hellcat in the past, and Leberge was--not surprisingly--impressed by the 707-horsepower muscle car as well.

"I wouldn't mind having one of these," he said, after which Leno handed him the keys.

"America loves you," Leno said, "Thank you buddy. Have lots of fun. Don't get any tickets."

Leberge said he couldn't promise that, and who could blame him?

Over the weekend a photo of a 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat's window sticker started making waves on the Internet. Why? Because it listed an eye-watering $150,000 San Diego Market adjustment. Fortunately, that image is a lie. There is no Hellcat with a $150,000 markup.

The window sticker belongs to a silver 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat sitting at Perry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in National City, California. There's no question that the window sticker pictured clearly states a $150,000 San Diego Market adjustment, but it's simply not true. How do we know? We called the dealership.

We spoke with the new car sales manager Terry Toudle. He informed us the entire thing was a mistake. Here's how it happened: The silver Hellcat arrived at the dealership and went to the back lot. The management didn't want it on the show floor with a window sticker price stating MSRP because they knew someone would want to buy it for that. You see, almost no Hellcats are being sold for MSRP right now, as we've heard most are being sold with a $10,000 to $20,000 market adjustment.

Terry told a sales associate to put a "Not For Sale" sticker on the car until the general manager and owner of the dealership could set a fair price on the car after the weekend. Said sales associate decided that instead of doing as instructed, he'd put something on a window sticker so ridiculous, no one would seriously consider buying it. And then someone snapped a photo of it and posted it on the Internet. Rumors started flying—with zero investigation—and now the world thinks Perry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is trying to sell a 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat for $212,000 and change.

Terry assured Motor Authority that while the car will not be priced at MSRP, it will not have a $150,000 mark up. Pricing has not yet been set, but the window sticker with the $150,000 market adjustment has been removed.

While we don't approve of dealerships gouging customers with exorbitant markups, we give Terry and the folks at Perry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram credit for being honest and owning up to a mistake.
