The DeLorean Motor Company — whose car became the time traveling machine in “Back to the Future” and later fizzled in the early 1980s after churning out fewer than 10,000 cars — is still alive an well, reports The News-Press. The company is now owned by Stephen Wynne, who acquired the right to the name and the cars before founder John DeLorean died. The company now provides service to existing DeLorean, and can even build one from the ground up from left over parts for about $42,000. “The DeLorean is a very nice GT car,” said president Tony Ierardi. “It’s not very fast, but now we can make it fast […] We’ve been open for 18 months and we have a two month waiting list. There’s about 1,800 DeLorean’s between here and North Carolina.”

I saw one a couple months ago when I was in Iowa. It was parked out by the hotel with a for-sale sign on it. I was tempted, but instead of having time circuits, the flux capacitor, and mr. fusion, it had louvers in the back window.

Mr. Fusion only powers the time circuits. The engine runs on gasoline, always has...so you can get Mr. Fusion, but you might need to put your car on train tracks to get up to 88mph.

Since there were no gas stations or gas yet in that time, they ahd to put it on train tracks and push it to 88mph by using super presto logs that the doc made.

Uh...so i guess unless Doc added his own "magic" to the Delorean, it probably had a hard time getting up to 88mph. This problem was soon solved with a visit to the future and installation of flying circuits.
England's Lotus Engineering provided the steel backbone frame, which supported a composite aluminum/fiberglass underbody and distinctive stainless-steel exterior panels. The Bosch fuel-injected 2.8-liter, 130-bhp SOHC V-6 was shared by Renault, Volvo and Peugeot. Fully independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and a five-speed manual transmission were standard, with a three-speed automatic as an option.
Very little testing had been done, so when the cars did arrive, they were plagued with electrical maladies, squeaking fiberglass underbody parts, and loose-fitting switchgear. The stainless-steel paneling was difficult to keep shiny. Although they wanted to like the DeLorean, American enthusiast magazines criticized its "dark, claustrophobic interior," mushy suspension and lack of horsepower. A twin-turbo option never materialized.

I either want a Flux Capacitor or another eject button (that covers the hazard lights button) for the S2K. Can't think that the Flux would fit in the center storage console though.

DeLorean Confirms: New Cars to Roll Out in '08
![](https://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2007/08/delorean_motor_company.jpg)
That's the official word from the folks at DeLorean Motor Company anyway. We sat down with James Espey, veep of the DeLorean Motor Company, one of a large corporate contingent in Detroit on Saturday for the Woodward Dream Cruise. They were there to cater to the large number of DeLorean enthusiasts in town to cruise their classic flux-capacitor-carrying time machines. The burning question we had was whether the AP story was correct in hinting that DMC would again be building DeLoreans. His response was absolutely clear:
"Job one will begin the third quarter of this year, with delivery by Q1 of 2008. We're aiming for $57,500 as the sale price."
And yes, we're also told it will look like a DeLorean -- square nose, gull-wings and all. This time, instead of attempting to mass produce the cars, the DeLorean folks will be building them by hand at their assembly plant in the li'l town of Humble, Texas. No word yet on issues regarding EPA testing or production numbers (we didn't think to ask), but the Detroit News is claiming it'll be one or two a month. The shots below were from the Saturday meet-up during the Woodward Dream Cruise where we spoke with Espey.
Let's just hope this time around it has more than 130hp

geez that's expensive, i'd rather buy a used one.
i saw one a few months ago on the road and although a nice car for it's time, you can tell it's an 80s car.

I didn't think it was good looking back then (except the doors were cool). They DEFINITELY need to redesign it
I see another train wreck coming for this venture. Didn't DeLorean get sent away for drug trafficing or something to do with Cocaine? Am I dreaming that one? That was the 80's, I wasn't quite clear headed for much of that decade

from the Baltimore Sun
The handmade cars will feature about 80 percent original parts. The other 20 percent will be new, supplier-made parts from companies such Valeo SA and the Bosch Group, said James Espey, a DeLorean Motor vice president.
The one limiting factor is the doors. The company has enough for about 500 cars, though it's important to keep some in stock for repairs and such. Beyond that, Espey said, the company is studying its options.
Enhancements to the new cars will include an improved stainless-steel frame, a stronger but lighter fiberglass underbody and electronics upgraded from the disastrous systems in the early DeLoreans. A peppier engine - the original cars' 135-horsepower was a downer for performance enthusiasts - will be available as an option.
"After working on these cars practically every day for 25 years, we've identified most of the issues and replaced them," Wynne said. "If there's a better part available, we'll use it. If there's a better way to install it, we'll do it."

Lol- The've been working on the car for 25 years and figured out most of the issues and still plan on using 80% of the original parts- awesome . I wonder what " A peppier" engine means- 150 bhp?

That was uncalled for...
About 95% of the car buying public wont care about this, that 5% with the money, the desire and the "want" for a DeLorean will get one. Now you say thats a waste of money, they wont make much money from this, they wont sell many, they know this already... "One or two a month"... that's 12-24 a year...
Those who want one will get one.
I think its awesome
