DCX-GM Hybrid News**DCX Announces its First Hybrid (page 1)**

DCX says it will produce hybrid cars near future - - By DIANA T. KURYLKO | Automotive News

The Chrysler group and Mercedes-Benz will produce hybrid cars in the coming years, despite doubts about their high costs and long-term potential, said Chrysler group CEO Dieter Zetsche.

The Chrysler group will sell an unspecified hybrid car within three years, and Mercedes will import a hybrid S class -- the brand's biggest and most luxurious car, Zetsche said.

Third automaker may join GM, DCX hybrid development effort

Third automaker may join GM, DCX hybrid development effort - - MARY CONNELLY | Automotive News - - Source: Autoweek

DETROIT -- By year end, a third automaker may join the DaimlerChrysler AG and General Motors partnership developing hybrid technology.

"There are discussions under way. They are very lively and very serious," Dieter Zetsche, Chrysler group CEO, said last week after a speech here. "I would not be surprised if within this year we would come up with an additional" partner.

Zetsche would not specify the automaker.

Several auto companies have expressed interest in joining the hybrid development venture, Zetsche said in a speech to the Detroit Economic Club.

"We've structured the program to allow for additional automotive partners," he said.

In December, DaimlerChrysler and GM told of a plan to develop hybrid technology for applications in GM, Chrysler group and Mercedes group vehicles.

Variants planned include rear- and front-wheel-drive versions of cars and trucks.

The technology will be on the road by late 2007, Zetsche said last week.

One analyst says adding partners would reduce cost.

"A partner can be someone bringing and sharing technology," says Lindsay Brooke, a senior analyst specializing in hybrid and advanced powertrain technology at CSM Worldwide in Farmington Hills, Mich. Or a partner may buy the technology for vehicle installations, he says.

"The more units the merrier in terms of bringing the costs down," Brooke says. "These technologies are very expensive to develop."

Zetsche said competing automakers "underestimated the interest that Toyota and Honda hybrids would generate."

If they are SO expensive to develop, how come Honda did little Honda develop it almost a decade ago?

why the hell do they need 3 partners when honda and toyota developed their own themselves. even nissan was smart enough to not waste time/money and just buy technology from toyota.

DaimlerChrysler Announces its First Hybrid and Major North American Investment

DaimlerChrysler Announces its First Hybrid and Major North American Investment - - Source: Edmunds.com

WASHINGTON — Chrysler Group CEO Dieter Zetsche told reporters here the company plans to introduce its first hybrid vehicle in late 2007 or 2008 — a Dodge Durango SUV.

DaimlerChrysler also announced plans to spend $40 billion in North America over the next five years on its Chrysler Group products.

The hybrid vehicle is a planned joint venture with General Motors and Mercedes-Benz. GM will use the system first, in late 2007 in its Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon full-size SUVs. Both Detroit automakers are trying to catch up with Japanese rivals Honda and Toyota on the fuel-saving hybrid systems.

The $40 billion investment plan includes retooling Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner factories. The company said investments will also include developing new models that have not yet been made public.

The Durango being the first hybrid is no surprise. Though the other story in the above article is more of a highlight in my opinion. $40 billion is a huge chunk of money coming Chrysler's way. Hopefully they will take advantage of that and execute on some really interesting new product. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Don't think Toyota or Honda are making money on their hybrids right now, with multiple companies spliting the costs, profits will come quicker.

I still think hybrids are fool's gold. What's going to happen to all these hybrids on the used car market when their warranties run out?

I would agree in the sense that gas-electric hybrids seem like a short term solution until other hybrid technologies can be developed.

Not sure what manufacturers are really getting out of this development of battery cars other than starting to establish a hybrid market/following. Might make a transition in the future to another hybird engine easier.

On the other hand gas-electric hybrids may leave a bad taste in consumers mouths when it comes to new technology if this current generation has a lifespan limited by its warranty.

IMHO, i believe that Hydrogen powered cars will control the future. All you need is water and electricity or basically anything and electricity and you can produce hydrogen. It's in basically everything we've got and we've got plenty of those things on earth. It only takes about 30 seconds to fillup at the hydrogen pump, the only emmission that comes out is water vapor and its basically clean enough to drink. Not only that, but it does not require a whole lot of work to modify a gasoline engine into a hydrogen engine. BMW did it with their 7 series back in the early 90's with just a few slight modifications to their regular gasoline engine. This way, even people that can't afford to buy a brand new hydrogen car, they can at least buy a "kit" to install that can modify their engines to be able to accept hydrogen as the fuel source.

So basically right there we've solved most of our air polution problems, the middle east problems because nobody will need their petroleum for gas, and since Hydrogen is plentiful, once it starts being mass produced it will be very cheap because Hydrogen is plentiful and it's not like we have to buy it from another country.

I don't think hydrogen is meant to be burnt in an internal combustion engine - it's meant for fuel cells that produce electricity to power electric motors to move the car.
